But this year Mercedes is offering plenty of trims and options with this van. It comes with three engine options, the 2.0L turbo I-4 gas, 2.0L turbo I-4 diesel, and the 3.0L turbo V6 diesel engine. With a longer wheelbase, three different varieties of power transmissions, and two drivetrain choices (RWD as standard & 4WD as optional) make this vehicle quite formidable.

Which trim should you buy?

If you are planning to opt for this cargo van then you should pick the 3.0L Turbo V6 Diesel variant that comes mated with a 7-speed automatic transmission, rear-wheel is standard in this trim. But if you are the one who is not much fond of diesel engines, then you have no choice but to choose the only gas engine. On the side, there are some good packages by Mercedes like an AWD option, MBUX multimedia system with 10.25″ touchscreen, extended warranty & some additional safety features like traffic sign assist, attention assist, 360-degree camera, and blind-spot assist. All these optional features are cheap to add, go with them if your budget allows.

2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Engine and Performance

5.3/10

The 2021 Sprinter has five different trims and Mercedes tried to cover all sorts of customers with their multiple engine options & three different transmission alternatives. The lower 1500 & 2500 has a 2.0-L turbocharged inline-4 gas engine which puts down the total horsepower of 188 and picks up the vehicle with its 258 lb-feet of torque numbers. This engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

The other two engines are the 2.0-L turbocharged inline-4 diesel (standard in 2500 & 3500) that churns out 161 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque and the 3.0-L turbocharged V6 diesel which is tuned to produce 188 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. Diesel engines are more sturdy and fuel-efficient when it comes to pulling some extra weight.

All these are commercial vehicles and there is no need for them to be the fastest ones on the drag strip, what matters here is how they perform under city traffic conditions or do they have enough power to take on the highways smoothly. Even though Nissan’s engine is the biggest of them all, it has an underwhelming 0 to 60 and quarter-mile timings. Towing capacity is another factor where Nissan disappoints us.

While Ford Transit has the perfect engine configurations and can tow much better. Lastly, there is a Sprinter with the smallest engine but still beats the Nissan in towing capacity. The GMC Savana Cargo Van has the most powerful engine out of all four, quarter-mile and 0 tp 60 timings are somewhat better than the Sprinter and the Nissan NV. It can tow much better and efficiently in the segment. And ford also offers a nice blend of engine performance and towing capacity.

How well does the 2021 Sprinter Cargo handle?

The ride quality of the 2021 Sprinter with the gas engine is super smooth, this engine is made for the average city conditions where the package needs to be delivered on a daily basis. The vehicle feels on the sluggish side with the full load capacity and it gets hard to maneuver it in the city and rough traffic situations. Although Sprinter has the class-leading steering wheel accuracy boosts the confidence of whoever drives it.

2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van Front Angle Driving View

A 9-speed automatic transmission that comes mated with the gas engine as standard shifts smoothly and doesn’t bother much while driving. Mercedes has made the best decision with their gas engine with this transmission. All the safety features also aid the driver to ride without worries and the premium feel of the cabin forces the rider to make it a second home.

Braking Performance of 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van

The Sprinter gets all four-wheel disk brakes with the antilock braking system to prevent the wheel from getting locked, brake assist, and stability controls. All these features come as standard in 1500, however braking power is rather felt underwhelming and pushes away the confidence while braking.

Based on the base curb weight of the Nissan NV2500 HD and the GMC Savana, the rotor’s size justifies itself and Transit is not much behind in the braking sector. The curb weight of the sprinter is the second-highest in the segment that makes it lighter than the GMC Savana (third highest), while Transit secures the lightest tag. As Sprinter’s braking information is unknown, which makes it hard to compare all three vehicles.

2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Fuel Economy

6.7/10

Commercial vehicles are built to clock miles on them and fuel eats up so much money, to somewhat solve this problem the Sprinter gets the diesel engine options, these powerhouses are better than the gas engine which is specially made to clock in miles and deliver good fuel economy. But there is a reason that the gas engine receives a 9-speed automatic, as it allows the cargo to cruise at high speeds and high-speed cruising at certain speeds gives better fuel economy.

Sprinter’s gas engine is not the one for the fuel efficiency, but it’s a better engine than the gas guzzler Nissan NV2500. Ford on the other hand has a decent size fuel tank and might be a better fuel-efficient engine. While the 2021 GMC Savana has the biggest fuel tank but with its massive power and 0 to 60 timings in the segment, it’s hardly going to save fuel.

2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Interior

3.8/10

Mercedes-Benz is a German automobile brand that is renowned for its premium and luxury interiors. And like other Mercedes-Benz, the Sprinter Cargo Van is also dressed well from the inside. Leather upholstery seats are comfortable for long rides and add a plush vibe to the cabin. The steering wheel of the Sprinter is loaded with all the multimedia and cruise control buttons, which makes it convenient for the driver. The rear-view camera comes as standard and with one of the packages, the vehicle also gets the adaptive cruise controls.

With 532.6 cu-ft, the Sprinter is the second-best in terms of cargo space and ford gets first place as it beats the splinter by just 10.6 cu-ft. Although it does not make any difference as the cargo capacity of both Splinter and Ford is almost similar. But what’s more disappointing is the cargo that Nissan and GMC get. Compared with the sprinter cargo space of GMC is unacceptable when someone is paying approximately $35,000. Nissan’s cargo capacity is not that impressive either, it’s at least 200 cu-ft less spacious than the sprinter. Some other features in the 2021 Sprinter are:

  • Communication module (LTE) for dig services
  • Shelf above windshield
  • Heater, auxiliary electric hot air
  • Adjustable steering wheel
  • Lockable storage compartment above windshield
  • Storage Compartment underneath the cockpit

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The base trim ‘1500’ of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter cargo isn’t loaded with lots of techs but it gets the 7.0-inch MUBX touchscreen infotainment system without any voice controls or any smartphone integration and Mercedes has made sure that our phone’s BlueTooth remains discoverable, while we listen to music playing in Sprinter’s poor quality sound system.

2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter basic Cargo Van Infotainment

For a person who loves to be around technology then you must go with one of the Sprinter packages according to your budget and requirements. While all the above features come as standard, therefore some of the infotainment related techs that arrives with one of the optional packages have been listed below:

  • Satellite Radio
  • Navigation System
  • Climate Control
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • Wifi connectivity
  • Auxiliary Electric Hot Air
  • 10.25-inch touchscreen MBUX infotainment screen with Mercedes PRO connect

2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Exterior

5.3/10

All three cargo vans look good but everyone has their preferences regarding the looks, therefore Sprinter has better aesthetics when compared to its rivals and Mercedes has put their point by giving the sober and classic design which generally makes it more appealing.

The 2021 Sprinter must be offered with the LED headlamps but as usual, it has halogen lamps and at this price tag it is unexpected. The Exterior Lighting Package is available for those who want a good throw and visibility at night and some features like cornering lights/curb illumination, headlight control, front fog lamps, LED front and rear lights.

The Sprinter has an ample load-carrying capacity as it is tallest and widest than its rivals and it moves freely as compared to Nissan but ford is the lightest of them all, Nissan feels heavy in the city riding conditions with its weight of 6172 lbs plus the extra cargo. GMC has a shorter wheelbase than Nissan, Sprinter, and Ford respectively and a shorter wheelbase means a small turning radius. GMC also gets the highest ground clearance in the segment. Some of the exterior features of the sprinter are mentioned below:

  • Black lower bumper
  • Side solid black bar
  • 16” Alloy wheels
  • Passenger-side sliding door
  • Swinging rear doors
  • Dual rear wheel configuration (optional)

2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Safety

Mercedes-Benz has a reputation when the talks are about safety and reliability. They have been ensuring their customers by offering safe products for a long time and made sure that the passengers are covered in every situation. The Sprinter Cargo Van hasn’t been rated by NHTSA for the crash test but one can buy this with their eyes closed but Mercedes has won several awards for their safe vehicles and Sprinter shares the same legacy. This cargo van comes with numerous safety features and some of them are listed below:

  • 4-Wheel Antilock Braking System
  • Front Vented Disks
  • Hill Assist & Hill Hold Control
  • Electric Power-Assist Speed-Sensing Steering
  • Day-Night Rearview Mirror
  • Emergency Call System
  • Engine Immobilizer
  • ESP with Crosswind Assist & Electronic Stability Control
  • ABS & Driveline Traction Control

2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Competition

2021 Sprinter Cargo Van Vs Nissan NV2500 HD

Nissan needs to up their game in safety, they should provide the latest safety features for the customers’ aid. Although Nissan has the most powerful engine, its fuel efficiency is not a hot topic in the current market, and its cargo isn’t spacious enough like Sprinter.

Nissan NV2500 HD

2021 Sprinter on the other hand has spacious cargo, decent engine performance, better towing capacity, and it’s also a fuel-efficient vehicle.

2021 Sprinter Cargo Van Vs Ford Transit Cargo

Ford has stylish looks but no one can beat the classic and sober exterior looks of the Sprinter and that Mercedes-Benz badge somewhat gives a luxury vibe.

Ford Transit Cargo

The Ford Transit has more horses than Sprinter and those numbers are not for the show only and it also delivers decent fuel economy. Interior is the main part of any vehicle and it’s where the Sprinter shines with its premium feel compartment and the cargo of both vehicles is equally spacious.

2021 Sprinter Cargo Van Vs GMC Savana Cargo 2500

The GMC Savana has the strongest engine but what’s the point in giving it when the cargo space is the lowest in the segment and with that much space it can only be used for ordinary delivery tasks.

GMC Savana Cargo 2500

It won’t provide the driving experience that Mercedes is promising, as it lacks many driver assistance features. As I mentioned before that fuel efficiency matters the most for this segment and with GMC’s gas engine one can’t achieve the efficiency that Sprinter gets.

2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Final Verdict

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van costs a little bit higher than its competitors but with the fairy-sized fuel-efficient engine, second in the line-up cargo space, and premium cabin the cost is justified. Sprinter also has the best segment safety features to aid driver safety. At the reliability that it comes, It will definitely put a smile on your face if you go with it.
