Detailed Review

The Mercedes Benz Sprinter looks like a box but a versatile one, with multiple compartments, solid build quality, and a lot of space, it delivers just about everything. Since the year of inception, the Sprinter replaced the Mercedes Benz TN to become the brand's only resort in full-fledged van category. The Sprinter name has been used multiple times in the market but currently, the Mercedes is the sole manufacturer of the Sprinter van.

With a sticker price of $44,150 the 2017 Mercedes Benz Sprinter initially comes with a 2.0L Inline 4 cylinder engine. An optional V6 engine is also available. However, the standard powerplant is backed with a 7-speed automatic transmission which generates a 161 horsepower and 265-pound-feet of torque.

The minivan territory looks all sunshine from the outside but get a closer look and you will see the cutthroat competition. The Mercedes name won't work here, both commercial and regular buyers need some deliverables. Sprinter receives a heavy competition from other full-fledged vans like Ford transit Wagon and Nissan NV Passenger.

2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Features

5.5/10

Coming from boxy van section of the Mercedes Stable, the Mercedes Benz Sprinter Passenger van is the only Passenger van wearing the tri-star badge. It can harbor 12 people in the most comfortable way. Though there is just one trim, this van is no short on options. You get a say in the drivetrain, either go for standard rear wheel or opt for the 4-wheel drive.

You can also extend the roof and length of the car as per your requirement. The Mercedes spoils its customers with 7 standard color choices and 2 seating options. And if you are still not satisfied, there are optional models which will take care of your needs.

2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Engine

5.2/10

“It's fair to say that the Transit represents a marked departure by offering improved fuel efficiency, better cargo flexibility, and much-improved ride and handling attributes. Its interior is modern and far more flexible, allowing it to be a people-carrier, a mobile office, or a cargo hauler with ease”- The Car Connection

Engine and Transmission

Buyers catering a soft corner for the big vans will love the Sprinter, however, the choice of powertrain might be disappointing to a certain extent. The van’s bonnet hides a 2.1L inline 4-Cylinder engine paired to a 7-speed automatic transmission. This powerplant musters a 161 horsepower and 265-pound-feet of torque. You also get an optional V6 diesel engine which cranks out 188 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. The specifications qualify the Sprinter to battle out with some of the best big boxy vans in the market.

The Mercedes treats its vans the same way it treats its other classes. Though the machine delivers on its part, its priced way too much considering the other vans. The market features some of the best vans equipped with potent V6s and V8’s. Both the Ford Transit and the Nissan NV Passenger home a V6 engine overshadowing the Mercedes Sprinter. However, a buyer can change the buyer with a V6 option offered by the brand.

Acceleration

Sprinting in a van is not required unless you are filming a Ninja Turtles movie, but still, if you want, the Sprinter can dash from 0 to 60 mph in 11.2 seconds. Driving further, the van can hit the quarter mile light in 18.3 seconds. However, it’s a disappointing number even for a boxy van. The rival companies feature more power and acceleration prowess.

Models Mercedes  Benz Sprinter 2500 passenger Ford Transit wagon 150 XL Nissan NV Passenger 3500 S
0-60 MPH 11.2 7.6 sec 8.7 sec
Quarter mile 18.3 15.9 sec 16.7 sec
Engine 2.0L 3.7L 4.0L
Emission (Tons/yr of CO2 Emissions @ 15K mi/year) N/A N/A 13.9

The Mercedes Benz is not that heavy but still, it takes a lot of time to reach 60 mph. Other full-size vans can easily conquer Sprinter in no time. Its 11.2-second performance makes it the lager amongst the lot featuring an acceleration as low as 7.6 seconds. The Ford Transit achieved this number while the Nissan NV settled on an 8.7-second performance.

Ride and Handling

The sluggish start might dishearten the driver but the minute it gains speed all goes well. Seats bolted high above the ground gives it a great visibility factor. The steering is to the point and handling is nimble even for a big passenger van. On the highway, the steering gains stability and while parking its light enough to maneuver. You may need to lay extra effort while parking it in tight spaces due to its ginormous body. It’s also a narrow van so you might want to slow down on the sharp turns on this van.

Braking

The Mercedes Benz Sprinter passenger does not have the best acceleration but do it comes with decent brakes? Well since the braking information is not available a proper deduction of its braking was not possible. Furthermore, the Sprinter’s 5787 pounds of weight is neither too heavy nor to light for a full-fledged van.

Model Mercedes  Benz Sprinter 2500 passenger Ford Transit wagon 150 XL Nissan NV Passenger 3500 S
Brake Front (in.) N/A 12.1 12.8
Brake Rear (in.) N/A 12.1 13.0
Curb Weight (lbs.) 5787 5488 6694

The buyers have seen some heavier vans like Nissan NV. However, there are some lighter weighing vehicles like Ford Transit too. Since there were no complaints in the previous model, the Sprinter is expected to perform well in the braking regime.

Towing Capacity

Apart from hauling people and cargo, the Sprinter passenger van and drag a couple of tons too. The van comes with a series of towing hooks and a maximum 5000-pound trailering capacity. To the reader, 5000 pounds might be just a number but it’s a whopping 2.5 tons in reality. So, it can practically pull another Sprinter.

Model Mercedes  Benz Sprinter 2500 passenger Ford Transit wagon 150 XL Nissan NV Passenger 3500 S
Towing Capacity (lbs.) 5000 5100 6200

The land of full-fledged vans is a home to a lot of premium vehicles and Sprinter is a prime player on this land. However, it's not the best when it comes to trailering. The likes of Nissan NV beats the Sprinter big time. It’s 6200 pounds of towing capacity is the benchmark for other vans. However, The Ford Transit matches the Sprinter with a 5100 pounds of towing capacity.

2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Interior

7.1/10

“Stepping into the 2017 Ford Transit Wagon after coming out of an old-school, truck-based passenger van is somewhat akin to getting a new smartphone after hanging up your old curly-corded, rotary dial desktop model. It's difficult to believe all the features you've lived without for so long”- Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

The Sprinter is one van capable of hauling 12 people at its maximum and at the same time doesn’t cut down on comfort. Every passenger will get ample of legroom and headroom space and the driver will get an SUV like seating. The interior might not be the most enchanting but the quality is commendable. The driver and wingman get 47.1 inches of headroom, 38.9 inches of legroom, and 67.7 inches of shoulder room space. It’s known for space and it delivers it flawlessly.

Third (Head/Shoulder/Leg) (In.) N/A 40.6/67.0/35.6 39.8/66.6/38.5

All vans in the competition feature a gigantic cabin space. The difference lies in the number of standard seats which limits the Transit’s utility factor. Otherwise, the Nissan NV and Mercedes Benz Sprinter settle on the same number.

Cargo volume

Let’s flip the question, what cannot you carry in a van? Right from big baggage’s of cargo to long ladders for construction workers, this van can swallow anything. The Passenger version uses its space to accommodate people rather than hauling luggage like their cargo and crew versions do. Still, you have a 68.6 cubic feet of space available. The rear seats can be removed as per your will to stuff in more cargo.

Model Mercedes  Benz Sprinter 2500 passenger Ford Transit wagon 150 XL Nissan NV Passenger 3500 S

Cargo Volume  to seat 2 (ft.3) N/A 124 N/A
Cargo Volume  to seat 1 (ft.3) N/A 224.5 218.9

Otherwise, there is a lot of space beneath the high rising seats and compartment utility. The front cabin is carved with a lot of utility compartments. A lot of cup holders side door compartments, sections on the dash and on the roof. So, there are a lot of things you can carry in the Sprinter. At the back, you get the 270 opening with magnetic locks to hold them while you feed this elephant.

2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Exterior

“Whether it's a panel van painted with your company's logo or a multi-passenger airport shuttle, the Transit gets 16-inch steel wheels with color-keyed hubcaps, and a black surround on the Aston Martin-inspired grille; wagons get tinted side glass”- KBB

Dimensions and Weight

The van’s design is often compared with a big rectangle on wheels. However, it accomplishes its purpose of hauling 12 people and at the same time keeping the comfort factor aligned. The seat sits higher above the road level giving a good look of the large windshield and extra windows contribute to this fact. It gives the Passenger Sprinter an edge over its Cargo counterpart. The Sprinter passenger van is 233.3 inches long, 79.7 inches wide, and 100.6 inches tall. Compared to other vans the sprinter is quite a big van.

Model Mercedes Benz Sprinter 2500 passenger Ford Transit wagon 150 XL Nissan NV Passenger 3500 S

Length(in) 233.3 219.8 240.6

Height(in) 100.6 82.2 84
Ground clearance (in) 7.9 N/A 8.1
Wheelbase (in) 144.3 129.9 146.1

The Sprinter is the biggest van in this lot, one can expand this already sizeable machine with an extended wheelbase and roof options. Whereas the Ford Transit is the smallest van in the lot. The Sprinter might share a wider turning radius with its 144.3 inches of wheelbase. Other vans wheelbase is inches shorter than the Sprinter which doesn’t make a lot of difference while turning.

2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Competition

Mercedes Benz Sprinter vs Ford Transit Wagon 150 XL

Ford has earned quite a name in the utility vehicles category, the reason is, people love utility vans and Ford’s practicality. The Transit is the latest offering from the Ford factory, the van comes with a 3.7L V6 engine which pumps out a 275 horsepower. The Mercedes Sprinter, on the other hand, comes standard with an inline 4-cylinder engine with much less power. However, you get the V6 option as well but you need to pay more. The Sprinter can harbor 12 people while the Transit can home about 8 people max. Both vans offer utility, but the Ford limits their van to 8 people and kept the price down accordingly. So, the choice depends on the number of people traveling in your van. If you prefer Ford there is always an option for 10, 12, or 15 seats.

Mercedes Benz Sprinter vs Nissan NV Passenger 3500 S

Offered on a competitive price, the Nissan NV passenger targets the budget shoppers. The NV is powered with a 4.0L V6 engine. On the other hand, the Mercedes Sprinter is a well-rounded van with everything covered to the point. Though power is not its forte you can opt for the optional V6 to cover that. The Nissan NV is a sweet deal which delivers more power and utility at a reduced price. There is no problem if you want the Sprinter but just remember the Mercedes badge would cost you about $9,000 more.

2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Final Verdict

The Mercedes relaxes its grips over luxury with the 2017 Sprinter. The brand’s arrow on the Sprinter might look charming but don’t let it trick you this van is all about business. It qualifies all the checklists to become the ideal van for a buyer. Everything form cargo volume to drivability, the Sprinter top in every section.

However, as standard van you have to settle for the inline 4-Cylinder engine which is easily beaten by its rivals, you need to pay more for the optional V6 powertrain. Overall, the Sprinter’s price is its own enemy. It gets the work done but on a heavy price which might turn off the buyer.
