Mercedes-Benz is the only premium vehicle brand that thought about the commercial segment. It has its foot in every segment be it trucks, buses, and even vans. Under Daimler, Mercedes-Benz introduced the Sprinter as a full-size van for cargo and passengers. In its segment, the Mercedes Sprinter is one of the most premium vans with its high-quality cabin, amazing comfort levels, and features you can't refuse. Still, it ensures that it serves its purpose like any other van in the segment.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

With multiple engines and drivetrain options, the Sprinter Van entered its third generation back in 2018 and is quite popular. For 2022, Daimler is discontinuing the Freightliner version as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is enough to rule the segment. We'll be getting a carryover model which is scheduled to arrive in the market by the last quarter of 2021. With a slight bump in its price, the 2022 Sprinter will rival the Ford Transit, Chevrolet Express 3500, and the GMC Savana 3500 at a starting price of $43,020.

2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Crew Van Features

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Crew Van will cost you between $43,000 to a whopping $59,000. The price ranges between different variants which are offered with a standard roof or an optional high roof to increase cargo capacity. Also, there are two wheelbase options with a standard wheelbase and a long wheelbase, while the Crew Van 4500 is offered with a dual-rear-wheel setup.

Moreover, the Sprinter Van is now equipped with the 4WD system as an optional add-on, if you choose the diesel powertrain. With a standard seating capacity of 5, you get various convenience and driver assistance features. On top of that, you can choose from a long list of optional packages that are available for you.

Which Trim should you buy?

Choosing your ideal van depends upon your needs. To drive around the city with your friends or crew, the base standard roof Sprinter with a 144-inch wheelbase is good enough. It comes with a fuel-efficient four-cylinder gasoline engine that will make your job easier.

If you are a heavy hauler, then you can go for the high roof and long-wheelbase versions to get a massive cargo space inside the cabin. The optional V6 diesel engine will ensure you have plenty of torque whereas the 4WD will ensure that the road never ends for you.

Release Date

Mercedes-Benz isn’t really hurrying up the launch of the Sprinter as it should be one of the last 2022 model year vehicle launches from the brand and is expected to hit the showrooms only by the end of 2021.

2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Crew Van Engine and Performance

Mercedes is going easy with the Sprinter as you have just 188 horses under the hood. For a large van, this amount of power is considered average. Still, the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is quite capable with its 258 lb-ft torque. Together with the 9GTronic nine-speed transmission, the Sprinter Van shifts just like a sedan. To give you enhanced capabilities, there's a V6 turbo diesel powertrain as well. It outputs a similar 188 hp of power at low RPM and impresses you with its 325 lb-ft torque.

The base 2500 variant is also available with a very frugal 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine rated at 161 hp and 264 lb-ft of torque. Both the diesel engines are paired up with the 7GTronic seven-speed transmission with a four-wheel drive to make it an all-terrain van. Both the engines are capable of towing up to 5,000 lbs and carry a payload of 3,770lbs while the dual-rear-wheel 4500 crew van can tow 7,500 lbs and has a payload capacity of 5,975 lbs. The base engine has no regard to performance as it takes 11.4 seconds to reach 60 MPH of speed. It has a sluggish quarter-mile run of 18.4 seconds.

The V6 is said to have delivered better performance figures and also gives you reliability and added power for a punchy ride. For a large size van, the Mercedes Sprinter offers decent handling. It lacks maneuverability and dynamics, still, it is made to perform its task properly. With its front strut suspension and transverse leaf springs, the Sprinter does offer a comfortable and nimble ride. The electric power steering makes it feel lighter. The optional 4WD improves handling and traction when driving over tough terrains.

Being a Mercedes, the Sprinter Crew Van costs more than any other van in the segment. Where rivals use the V6 powertrain as standard, the Sprinter sticks with an underpowered 4-cylinder. Even the optional V6 diesel has similar power output. The Ford Transit has flex-fuel capabilities whereas the Chevy and GMC vans offer the highest engine output. Ford Transit is the fastest van in the segment while the heavier GM twins take the second spot. When it comes to towing and payload, again the rivals are way ahead of the Sprinter Crew Van in base guise.

2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Crew Van Fuel Economy

With its humble four-cylinder gasoline powertrain, the Mercedes Sprinter is the most fuel-efficient light-duty van. It may not impress you with its performance, but its 18 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway is something. You have a combined 20 MPG which easily fetches 440 miles in mixed driving conditions.

The diesel V6 engine is much better with its low RPM torque. Other than its capability, the diesel powertrain gives you 21 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway, and a combined 22 MPG which is good enough to haul heavy stuff around. With a bigger 24.5 gallon tank, you have a highway range close to 600 miles.

The Mercedes Sprinter has proved itself worthy with an amazing fuel economy. It may not haul heavy stuff still it is sufficient to carry your loads around the town. Both gas and diesel engines have a better fuel economy than their rivals. The buyers prefer the diesel engine for better mileage, reliability, and performance. The MPG of the van varies according to its size and trim levels.

2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Crew Van Interior

Mercedes makes the most advanced and stylish cabins. Its cars are designed with premium quality interiors and designs. When it comes to vans, Mercedes takes a different path. The result is a refined cabin with simple ergonomics, space, and practicality. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Crew Van will retain its appealing interior design.

Even after keeping it low-key, Mercedes Sprinter still looks more upscale than the rivals. With great road visibility, the Sprinter gets a simple dashboard layout with a huge center stack for infotainment and turbine-inspired AC vents. On the driver's side, there's a three-spoke leather steering wheel along with a column gear shifter and lots of controls.

Inside the Crew Van, you have a seating capacity of five where the seats are wrapped with soft maturin fabric upholstery. The front bucket seats offer 4-way seat adjustments with optional heating function, lumbar support, and comfort head restraint. There's a second-row bench seat for three people that can be removed if not needed.

Mercedes Sprinter is already the clear winner with its spacious and upscale cabin. Even with the standard roof, the front seat of the Sprinter offers great headroom. The legroom is somehow tight which is a plus point for the rivals. You have decent seating space in the second row as well. The high roof version adds more headroom.

Behind its second row, you have a massive 222.5 cubic feet of cargo space which goes up to 370.8 with the long wheelbase and high roof version. The rivals have limited cargo space with the Transit offering the least amount of cargo space. The GMC Savana and the Chevrolet Express have cargo space similar to the Sprinter. Highlight interior features are:

  • Maturin fabric upholstery
  • Leather steering wheel
  • Massive headroom
  • Heated seats
  • Power adjustable seats with lumbar support
  • Tilt steering wheel
  • Single zone air-conditioning

What's there to keep you entertained?

Mercedes won't disappoint you with its infotainment. However, if you talk about the Mercedes Sprinter, you'd rather pick the optional infotainment than the base one. It is a small LCD display that is limited to audio streaming, Bluetooth connectivity, and an AM/FM radio with a 5-speaker audio system. The premium package adds an MBUX multimedia system with a 7.0-inch touchscreen that brings in voice command, Apple car play, Android auto, a SiriusXM radio, and a 4G WiFi hotspot as well.

If that doesn't satisfy you, you can also have the high-resolution 10.25-inch touchscreen with the premium plus package. The package also adds a satellite navigation system so that you arrive at your destination in time. There's a wireless charging dock at the center console so that you avoid carrying cables. For driver's information, there's a gauge display that shows a trip computer, van's graphical images, and safety alerts. Highlight infotainment features include:

  • MBUX multimedia system
  • 7.0-inch or 10.25-inch touchscreen display
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • SiriusXM radio
  • Satellite navigation system

2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Crew Van Exterior

With the introduction of the third generation, Mercedes made several changes to the Sprinter Van. Now it offers a striking exterior design with tons of options and packages. In its segment, Mercedes is the only brand that focuses on both practicality and design. With a fresh look, Mercedes has given preference to quality and features. The SUV-styled front fascia with LED headlamps and a huge signature grille looks way better than the classic sloping hood design.

With the standard roof, the Sprinter looks simple. But when you choose the high roof, it looks massive. With huge front doors, you have a passenger-side sliding door with fixed windows. The wide side molding gets integrated marker lamps to the back. The split open rear door of the Sprinter makes it more versatile. As standard, you get 16-inch steel wheels whereas the light-alloy wheels are offered as optional.

The Mercedes Sprinter Crew Van is comparatively lighter than the rivals if you pick the standard roof along with the standard wheelbase. Either way, the Sprinter looks both capable and stylish. With its 144-inch wheelbase, the Sprinter is the longest van in its segment. Instead of width, Mercedes has given it a substantial height to enhance its cargo capacity. The ride height is decent enough but the GM vans offer the highest ground clearance. Highlight exterior features are:

  • LED headlamps
  • Chrome trimmed black grille
  • Standard and high roof options
  • Optional fog lamps
  • Heated black side mirrors
  • Sliding door with fixed window
  • 16-inch steel or alloy wheels
  • Standard and long wheelbase options

2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Crew Van Safety

Mercedes never fails to satisfy us with its innovation and with its famed German build quality, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is ready to safeguard you in most scenarios. Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has crash-tested the premium Sprinter yet and considering the high value and rather low sales volumes, we don’t expect it to happen in the future as well.

That being said, to give the driver peace of mind, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Crew Van is well packed with advanced safety features. For driver's assistance, you have attention assist, active distance assist Distronic and a 360-degree surround-view camera. Moreover, the safety is backed by a blind spot monitor, active lane keep assist, and crosswind assist. Standout safety features are:

  • Driver attention assist
  • Active distance assist Distronic (intelligent cruise control)
  • 360 degree surround view camera
  • Blindspot monitor
  • Active lane keep assist
  • Crosswind assist (electronic stability control)

2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Crew Van Competition

2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Crew Van vs 2021 Ford Transit Crew Van

The Ford Transit is better than the Sprinter in so many ways. First of all, it is available for cheap and is more focused on performance and capabilities. The power output works in its favor as it can haul and tow better than the Sprinter. The Mercedes Sprinter takes things next level with its overall package of technology and safety. Moreover, the simple-looking Sprinter can be transformed into a practical van with optional packages. It just lacks power when compared with the Transit.

2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Crew Van vs 2021 Chevrolet Express 3500

The Chevrolet Express 3500 is more of a passenger van than a crew van with its 12 person seating capacity. Still, it is quite capable with its 276hp V6 engine that puts the Mercedes Sprinter to shame when it comes to practicality and towing. The Mercedes Sprinter laughs at the Express when it's about design and cargo space. With multiple roof and wheelbase options, it takes a step ahead of the Chevy Van.

2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Crew Van vs 2021 GMC Savana 3500

With its dated design and limited options, the GMC Savana looks out of time in front of the modern Mercedes Sprinter. Still, the Savana is equally capable as the Chevy Express. Also, the GMC Savana is closer to Mercedes in terms of quality and comfort. Mercedes Sprinter is a perfect Crew Van with its customizable seating space, tons of features and options, and a reliable powertrain that won't budge you. If you want a practical and more reliable partner for the city, then the Sprinter is a better choice for you.

2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Crew Van Final Verdict

Driving a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter as your everyday vehicle is both easier and cost-effective for both an individual or a business. If you are looking for a new van that can fit both your crew and their inside, then the 2022 Sprinter should be your pick. It has all the traits of a Mercedes with its premium features, comfort, ride quality, safety, and of course the technology. For a starting price of around $43,000, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Crew Van seems like a fair deal.
