The Sprinter has worn many badged in the past, ranging from Dodge and Freightliner but it was Mercedes Benz where it felt right at home. The German brand was reluctant to launch its Euro-Boxy design in America as it was contrasting for their image, but they did it anyway and now America is its second most popular market. This year Sprinter has been revamped with new powertrains, interior, and infotainment features which will sure to leave a scar on its top rival the Ford Transit's sales charts.

2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van Features

Mercedes second most prominent market for the Sprinter is our United States, however its still struggling to beat the American home boy Ford Transit. To do that Merc has opened production right in the American hood, this will bring the Sprinter's price down which is keeping it from greatness. The Sprinter Passenger van is offered in a galore of configurations, the Passenger van comes in 2500 regular variant with three wheelbase options and two height options. The regular height is not available in the Passenger and crew van but the utilitarian Passenger van has that option.

There are two options for payload. There are 3 powertrain options which directly bore different payload capacities. The Gas Powered Sprinter has 2 different payloads while the Diesel spices up your van with three different payload and towing options. The Diesel 4x4 Sprinter has its own two exclusive payload capacities. It might be a barebones workaday van but the Sprinter brings a fair amount of livable features to the dash.

We Recommend

Mercedes has done a great job providing multiple configurations and add ons for the Sprinter. You need to match your requirements with a perfect blend of features and configurations.

2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van Engine and Performance

By big van standards, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter lives up to its name- TheCarConnection

Engine and Transmission

Mercedes gave everything the Sprinter needed to ferry Passenger, be it a big Passenger compartment, decent mileage number, a mushrooming of configurations, and a potent engine. This year's Sprinter gets a new 1.9L Turbo-4 engine mated to another new 9-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain drills out 190 horsepower and 258 pound feet of torque. The power is send to the rear wheels of the Sprinter. Though the fun doesn't end here, remember the two other powertrains we mentioned? Yes, they are alive and available.

A 3.0L Turbodiesel V6 engine mated to a 7 speed automatic which sends the power to the rear wheels of the van. The other powertrain feature a similar engine with the drivetrain changed to 4 wheel drive. This particular engine can muster 188 horsepower and 323 pound feet of torque.

Acceleration

The Sprinter might be a boxy van but its not a sloth. The new engine option is more punchy and offers a tad more power which is clearly felt. You won't have the gut punch effect but fair enough to actually consider slowing. One thing which meddle with the performance is its sluggish start , you will feel the need to jab the pedal multiple times to torque up the wheels but the feeling comes and goes in a heartbeat as the Sprinter starts to shine soon enough. The turbodiesel variant comes with paddle shifters.

Handling and Braking

Sprinter turns out a fine van for both city and highway. The ride remains calm and composed without any chassis rattles or squeaks and boy roll was brought down to the minimum. The 2019 Sprinter dropped the hydraulic steering for an electrically assisted system. To say it's an improvement would be a shot in the dark, as the wheel is lifeless and deprived of any road communication.

The Crosswind assist was ripped from last year's iteration and installed in the new Sprinter which is a good thing. The road pavements obstruct the cabin only on high speed, hard turns and jabbed braking, otherwise the Sprinter is fun to drive for minivan standards. Speaking of the brakes, there is not much information available. But there are no significant changes in the braking realm from last year. So, one can expect a consistent and well-composed brake on the 2019 Sprinter.

Towing and Payload

There are two payload options at 3854 pounds and 4354 pounds, while the 5000 pounds of towing capacity remains stagnant for the two. However, the Sprinter is not the most capable at trailering Passenger, the likes of GMC Savana far exceeds the Sprinter. Its practically two folds of what the Benz offers.

The Sprinter might be a handsome hauler of goods but its trailering prowess is hounded by a question mark. With its maximum towing of 5000 pounds Mercedes is at the bottom of the boxy van ladder, as far as towing is concern.

2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van Fuel Economy

The fact that vans do not report to EPA feds keeps its mileage in the haze. However, you can expect a 20mpg mileage which is showed in the computer test. The tank capacity is a tad lower than what other vans deliver, but that won't affect you in any way.

2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van Interior

The Sprinter offers lots of room for people and cargo. Driver aids exist to help maneuver the van in tight quarters. But parking still remains a challenge with such a big vehicle-Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

The interior might not live up to the Mercedes name but that's everything a barebones van can do. Inside, the Sprinter is largely forged in plastic with a lot of hard touches and plasticky textures. The seating position is highly similar to the yesteryear's model but its more comfortable, courtesy to improved seat cushioning. There is center console and the interior gaps are fairly visible. The Sprinter's tri-spoke steering wheel can be wrapped in leather and feels good in hand. You have three different options for the interior.

The Sprinter's interior dimensions are yet to be revealed. However, the cabin is spacious and is expected to deliver a lot of headroom and legroom for all 12 people. The driver and the wingman can endure long trips with ease in the Sprinter.

Infotainment

People may say, Sprinter is a side project and Mercedes focus more on their luxurious sedans and coupes but that's not the truth. The fact that Mercedes implanted their brand new MBUX infotainment into the Sprinter shows it's an important project. You can have the infotainment in a 7 inch or 10.3 inch infotainment touchscreen. It might take you a few tries to get acquainted with the new system hygiene. The menus are clear and scrollable, you get a volume switch too. The steering wheel features some touchpads and buttons too. The only play with this great system is that faulty voice controls which responds to every time you say Mercedes. Also, different accents will be ignored by the system.

  • Adjustable Steering Wheel (Angle)
  • Communication Module (LTE) for Dig. Services
  • Lockable Storage Compartment Above Windshield
  • Shelf Above Windshield
  • Heater, Auxiliary Electric Hot Air
  • Storage Compartment Underneath Cockpit

Passenger volume

Now comes the place where Sprinter really starts to shine. It might come from the hotshot Mercedes garage but Sprinter is pretty down to earth. It's got the Passenger van basics with its impressive 319 cubic feet of Passenger bay. You can harbor all type of stuff plus get the extended length and height if you need to. The inside cabin is more livable too, with cupholders and big door pockets.

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter blends some high-tech touches with a boxy, functional body- TheCarConnection

Design and Styling

Hands down, the Sprinter is the most handsome van the was ever built. Some people might criticize the full-fledged van segment for having a poor design but that just about everything you can do with a boxy van. Fortunately, Mercedes makes the best of it. The front bumpers are unpainted and the steel wheels walk with their natural color. This might be discouraging but it looks fine on the boxy styling. Also, there is a plethora of paint options, frankly there are more color option than featured on your favorite sedan.

Dimensions and Weight

Away from the Metris's oddly oversized dimensions, the Sprinter sticks to the rulebook. It is lighter than most of the vans in the segment which earns more points in the performance area. The fact that everything behind the B pillar is still the same is a good thing, as it inherits the utilitarian nature and doesn't impair with the dimensions. You have a 233.5 inches of total length, 92 inches of width, and 96 inches of total width. The basic 144 inches wheelbase is not the biggest but better than some in the segment. You can extend these dimension with the 2 length and height options.

Exterior Features

  • Dual-Circuit 4-Wheel Disc Brakes
  • Front and Rear Mudflaps
  • Rear Doors Opening to Side-Wall (Optional on 144" & 170" models)
  • Red Diesel Filler Cap (Diesel only)
  • Windshield with Filter Band

2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van Safety

The 2019 Sprinter is yet to undergo any third party crash testing and usually the big boxy vans are not tested, so you may not see ratings. However, Mercedes did their thing by equipping everything they have got. Feature like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane control and more features take the center stage on the Merc.

  • Active Brake Assist
  • Blind Spot Assist Mirror
  • Attention Assist
  • 360 Degree Camera
  • Active Distance Assist Distronic
  • Traffic Sign Assist
  • LED Performance Headlights
  • Emergency Call
  • Wet Wiper System
  • Active Lane Keeping Assist

2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van Competition

Nissan NV 2500 Vs Mercedes Benz Sprinter 2500 Regular

Nissan NV might be the ugly basic van that you don't pay attention to but it gets the job done and that its prime quality. The features a smaller price tag by delivering more power which will impress a lot of van shopper in America. But the heavy weight and low Passenger volume will balance out your amazement. The fact that it's not changed from 2013 makes it vulnerable and unattractive deal. The Sprinter on the other hand brings something fresh to the table.

We would suggest you to go with the Sprinter as it offers more Passenger and offer a rich feature list.

Ford Transit Passenger Vs Mercedes Benz Sprinter 2500 Regular

The Sprinter is doing a great job but it's not enough to counter the industry favorite Ford Transit. Transit has done a great job in cornering other minivans and making its way to the finish line. However, Mercedes attempts to bring the price down will impact the Transit's sales. In terms of deliverables Transit is half the man that the Sprinter is. It features a bogger Passenger bay, is uploaded with more features and a better infotainment system, however. The only flaw remains is its lack of power. If you want something new for the price and a better overall deal than the Sprinter is your ride.

2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van Final Verdict

The Mercedes Benz Sprinter was due for a makeover and it has finally got the appointment now. The 2019 Sprinter has become more versatile and commercial friendly. The fact that Mercedes opened the Sprinter factory in America shows they are serious for the American market. Everything from the hood to the B pillar has changed. There are new powertrain options and a cutting edge infotainment which will catch the buyers attention. It's the best looking van in the segment plus its ginormous Passenger bay is unparallel. The 9-speed automatic transmission is smooth and yield smooth shifts, though the Sprinter runs low on power.

Sprinter is all set to capture new customers and make a vast threshold in American, so get ready!
