Overall Rating

The Clubman is powered by standard 1.5 liters three cylinder generating 139 hp while a turbocharged four cylinder with 189 hp is optional. The cabin is typical Mini with circular dials everywhere and well-bolstered seats. Individuals who desire the driving dynamics of Mini with a little more space, the Clubman is quite apt for them.

It rivals with Audi All road, Subaru Outback, and VW Sportwagen. All of them are extended wheelbase version os standard vehicles. Let’s see how the Clubman stands against them.

6.5/10

The Mini Clubman comes in three trim levels, which is Cooper and Cooper S, a performance-oriented JCW variant is also available for the enthusiast. People who want handling characteristics of Mini with more legroom and headroom, the Clubman is tailor made for them. They have similar feature content but are differentiated by engines under the hood. The standard Clubman comes with a turbocharged three cylinder generating 134 hp while the Cooper S comes with turbocharged four cylinders generating 189 horsepower. You can also add all-wheel drive to both the models for an extra $2000.

We Recommend

The standard Cooper engine lacks punch, so better to go with Cooper S which has lively inline for highway cruising. The optional signature package gives you a true custom feel and leather wrapped seats. Moreover, it boasts an 8-speed automatic transmission mode.

2019 Mini Clubman Engine and Performance

7.5/10

Boil it down to pure practicalities, and some key rivals deliver a better combination of ride and handling prowess, powertrain refinement and performance, interior accommodations, and value. But ultimately, few other cars have the cool-factor, or can make daily life as fun, as this XL-sized Mini Clubman."- Consumer Reports

Engine and Transmission

The Mini Clubman is offered in three engine options. The base engine is a turbocharged 1.5 liter three cylinder which puts out 134 hp and 162 lb ft of torque. Its power is enough for day to day driving but feels sluggish when loaded with cargo and passengers. The Cooper S employs a much powerful turbocharged four cylinder which produces 189 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. The Turbo four packs more punch than the three cylinders.

The standard engine is mated to a six speed manual transmission or an optional six speed automatic transmission. The Cooper comes with a six speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission (steering mounted paddle shifters).

The Audi All road takes the cup here with the highest amount of horses and comes with all-wheel drive as standard. The Clubman takes the second spot with 207 hp followed by Subaru Outback and VW sportswagen.

Acceleration

The three-cylinder engine gives you a timid acceleration, while the turbocharged powertrain gives you the much required excitement. The club may takes 8.0 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill. It crosses the quarter-mile mark in 16.4 seconds topping out at 85 miles an hour. Clubman feels slow when merging with traffic yet sports mode does help a little bit.

The Audi is fastest among rivals and just takes 6.9 seconds to reach 60 mph followed by Clubman. The Subaru Outback and VW Sportswagen are similar in attaining 60 mph mark.

Ride and Handling

The Clubman's base engine feels timid because of the significant weight it has to carry. The bigger 2.0 liter engine comes with better performance and lively acceleration. Handling is quick and firm suspension helps in controlled body roll over corners, the same go kart feeling you get with Mini's. The ride is excellent on smooth roads and undulation are well muffled by the suspension.

The Hardtop's reputation for playful driving dynamics is confirmed, even on this base model. The high level of confidence encourages spirited driving. The steering is precise and great for the driver who demands enthusiasm. For day to day use it can feel a bit quick or sensitive as it reacts to small inputs. The Clubman surprisingly agile and predictable at corners because of its small size.

Braking

The Mini Clubman has got exceptional braking performance and it is a stopping superstar. The Pedal travel is small and it smooth to operate in the city and freeways. Clubman remains stable in an emergency braking situation and only require 107 feet's to stop form 60 mph. It is an excellent number despite of all-season tires.

The Mini uses a Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) on corners which monitor steering input and acceleration to determine the direction you want to go. In the case your Mini starts to stray, then the system applies correct brake pressure to individual brakes and adjusts engine torque to maintain the correct line. Also, the automatic transmission makes an abrupt noise when you come to a sudden stop.

2019 Mini Clubman Fuel Economy

This is where the Mini Clubman lacks as most of the rivals delivers better miles per gallon. It is able to return 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. The Clubman delivers a good dose of performance without compromising too much on fuel economy.

2019 Mini Clubman Interior

8.0/10

More so than even the Countryman, [the Clubman is] a small family vehicle with a luxurious feature [list], everyday comfort, and versatility, wrapped up ina shouty style that fits the brand. But unlike its hefty, high-riding brother, the Clubman is better at putting a stupid, silly, mile-wide smile on your face. And that remains the highest compliment we can pay to a Mini, no matter how many doors it has.- Autoblog

Seating and Comfort

From the inside, the Clubman is a homage to the classic mini design with a large circular infotainment screen and gauge cluster. Like the countryman, the Mini Clubman adds much required legroom and cargo capacity to the rear. The 2019 Mini Clubman has the correct mix of innovation and retro kitsch. The huge circular central display 6.5-inch infotainment screen, and underneath it are flips and switches that look retro, yet control modern amenities.

In back, the Clubman touts 2.5 more inches of legroom than in a standard Cooper model, which helps in increasing legroom. The seats are comfortable and provide ample amount of support for a long journey. Taller individuals may feel short of legroom.

2019 Mini Clubman Exterior

Like Clubman models before it, the latest version retains its signature swing-out rear doors instead of an upward-rising liftgate. In every other way, this little British carhas evolved, especially in technology, creature comforts, and overall refinement. Like all Minis, the 2019 Clubman is fun to drive and makes a statement wherever it goes, but it is premium appeal comes with an associated price, especially as you climb trims or add options.- Kellybluebook

Dimension and Weight

The Mini Clubman is definitely size up in terms of functionality and looks as charming as its cousin hatchbacks. It is artfully constructed keeping practicality in mind. At 168 inches, this is the longest Mini ever but the driving dynamics remains unchanged.

The Clubman has a pair of swing-out doors which looks funky but hinders outward visibility in some way.

2019 Mini Clubman Competition

Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback is a decent alternative to the Mini Clubman and they are priced similar. It has one of the largest cargo in this segment, spacious cabin and comes with loads of standard features. The ride is comfortable and you get all-wheel drive as standard. The Outback also comes with state of the technology like Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving technology and also an upscale cabin. The Subaru Outback wins in practicality and the Clubman takes performance cup.

Fiat 500L POP wagon

The 500L Pop from Fiat comes with an intercooled turbo premium unleaded I4 1.4L engine. It is capable of producing 160 hp of power along with 184 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission mode.

In terms of acceleration, Fiat 500L Pop is one of the slowest rides in its league. The ride shoots to 60 MPH in 8 seconds and requires 16.2 seconds for covering a quarter-mile. Moreover, it has the least-in-league combined fuel economy of 25 mpg. The Fiat 500 and Mini Clubman go neck to neck in every aspect and it all depends on the buyer.

Volkswagen Golf Sportswagen

The Sportwagen offers the driving dynamics of popular Golf hatch with extended cargo capacity. Powered by a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder which puts out 170 hp and 199-pound feet of torque. You can choose between a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The VW Sportwagen is priced lower than the Mini and proves to be a budget alternative. If you can live with little less horsepower than nothing is better than the VW. If you want a little more punch than go with the Clubman.

2019 Mini Clubman Final Verdict

The 2019 Mini Clubman can be considered as the most fun to drive subcompact with a pleasant interior. It lacks all-around competence of rivals but comes with a roomier interior and ample amount of cargo space. You get go-cart like fun driving dynamics with exceptional performance.
