The Iconic British marque Mini doesn't need any introduction and is well known in the market for its classic looks and go-kart-like handling. The Mini Clubman is the brand’s attempt at the station wagon segment, and we know that the station wagon market is rapidly shrinking. The Clubman is a more practical approach of MINI towards making cars that are sporty and rank high in practicality too. So the 2022 Mini Clubman has a huge task at hand to impress its cult followers and new buyers looking for a station wagon with some unique styling.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Mini Clubman is available in two main trims, namely the Cooper S Clubman, Cooper S Clubman All 4, and a performance-oriented JCW trim. The two main trims are further subdivided into Classic, Signature, and Iconic trim. The prices for the 2022 trims start at $29,900 for the Cooper S Clubman and go up to $ 32,900 for the Cooper S Clubman All 4. It faces competition from the Subaru Outback, Volvo V60, and Audi A4 Allroad

The 2022 Mini Clubman will be available in mainly two trims, namely the Cooper S Clubman and Cooper S Clubman All 4. The All 4 version is essentially an all-wheel-drive version of the Cooper S Clubman. Both the trims are further subdivided into Classic, Signature, and Iconic trims. The further division of interior, safety, and infotainment features across the trims is given in the table below.

We Recommend

In our opinion, the Cooper S Clubman with Signature trim makes more sense than the other trims. It offers most of the creature comforts and other helpful features. Also, the price difference between the Signature and Iconic trim is considerable. So why spend more for a few extra luxuries when you can get most of them at a lesser price.

Release Date

Mini has officially released the specifications and price list for the 2022 model. So we assume that it might be available for bookings soon.

Engine and Performance

The 2022 Cooper S Clubman is equipped with a 2.0 L inline-four turbocharged engine producing 189 HP and 206 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic DCT transmission which will perform the way it should and will offer precise shifts. The standard Cooper S Clubman will be available in FWD configuration and can also be available in AWD configuration in the form of All 4 trim. The acceleration will be good considering the output and will do a 0-60 mph sprint in about 6.9 seconds, the same as the current model. If you are looking for more performance, then you should check out the JCW version of the Cooper S Clubman.

2022 Mini Clubman Wagon Takes 6.9s to hit 0-60 mph

The older 1.5 L three-cylinder engine with 6-speed automatic and manual transmission is no longer the part of the trims, and we thank MINI for that as the performance from that engine was underwhelming. The current model with a 2.0 L engine does a quarter-mile in under 17.5 seconds, which is not exciting, but considering the power output and the way it delivers that power, it is quite acceptable. The 2022 Cooper S Clubman is expected to handle like its current model. The driving dynamics are good but in certain road conditions, you might feel a bit uncomfortable owing to a stiffer suspension, which is tuned for sporty driving and thus comprises a bit of comfort.

*Expected, 2021 rival models for comparison

The 2022 Mini Cooper S Clubman specifications have been released by the company, and it is similar to the current model. The Subaru Outback has the largest engine of the lot, but it produces much lesser power output compared to all. However, it comes with the AWD as standard, which is a good thing for all-terrain use. The Volvo V60 also offers more power, but its performance figures are similar to the Cooper S Clubman. The star of the game is the Audi A4 Allroad which delivers maximum power output and smashes the competition with a 0-60 mph timings of just 5.7 seconds. It also comes with a standard AWD configuration.

Fuel Economy

The 2022 Mini Cooper S Clubman offers 29 mpg in mixed driving conditions as per the official data from Mini. The fuel tank capacity is 13.2 gallons, which results in a combined range of 383 miles, which is on the lower side as compared to the competition. We expected the fuel efficiency figures of the 2022 Mini Cooper S Clubman to be better since the Outback with a larger engine and AWD configuration offers the same efficiency figures as that of the Cooper S Clubman.

*Expected, 2021 rival models for comparison

The Subaru Outback is the king of the range here with a larger fuel tank capacity of 18.5 gallons and efficiency figures which are the same as the Cooper S Clubman. The Volvo V60 is the least fuel-efficient car here, and with a smaller fuel tank capacity of just 14.5 gallons, it fails to impress in terms of range. The Audi A4 Allroad offers the second-highest range with a moderately sized fuel tank and good fuel efficiency.

The 2022 Mini Cooper S Clubman comes with the iconic Mini interior we all like. The rounded elements used in the cabin are just timeless and give nostalgia about its iconic past. The Clubman, being an extension of the standard Cooper S, provides better leg space and cargo capacity as compared to the standard Cooper S. However, for the 2022 model, you get a larger 8.8“ infotainment display and support for Apple CarPlay. The display sits in the circular housing on the center of the dashboard and looks very similar to its classic circular headlamps.

2022 Mini Clubman Wagon Dashboard

The overall dashboard layout and controls are well laid to make way for ergonomic usage. The quality of parts in the cabin is top-notch as you would expect, and the circular design theme is a combination of the old and modern eras. With all the seats in place, the Cooper S Clubman offers 13.0 cu-ft of cargo capacity, and it's less compared to the competition. The front seats have optional adjustable lumbar and thigh support. It provides ample support for moderately long journeys, but taller individuals might feel uneasy. The rear seats are comfortable too with more leg space.

*Expected, 2021 rival models for comparison

The 2022 Cooper S, even in its Clubman avatar, delivers just 13.0 cu-ft of cargo space, which is very less compared to its competition. It can be extended by lowering the rear seats, and you get 44 cu-ft of volume. The Volvo V60 and Audi A4 Allroad offer similar cargo capacity with just 1 cu-ft of difference between their total capacity. The Outback clearly smashes the competition with its cargo capacity of 33 cu-ft, and it can be further extended to 76 cu-ft by lowering the rear seats. The rear row leg space offered by the Cooper S Clubman is good but does not come close to the competition. Some of the standout interior features of the Cooper S Clubman are:

  • Carbon Black Leatherette upholstery
  • Heated Front Seats and Steering Wheel
  • Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control
  • Comfort Keyless Access
  • Front Sport Seats with additional bolstering
  • Split rear door configuration
  • Ambient lighting (Signature trim)
  • Storage Package (Signature trim)

How intuitive is the Cooper S Clubman S infotainment unit?

The wagon now gets an 8.8“ touchscreen display embedded in the circular housing of the dashboard. The infotainment system has a provision for connected media with remote and connected services. The highlighting feature of the infotainment system is the circular LED ring around the touchscreen display which gives it a sporty look.

2022 Mini Clubman Wagon Infotainment System

You get a six-speaker audio system with AM/FM tuners, HD radio, and SiriusXM satellite radio with a 12-month subscription as standard across all the trims. As you climb up the trim ladder and reach the Iconic trim, you get the Harman Kardon premium music system to make your journeys more musical with better clarity and output. You also get support for Navigation to help you reach your destination. Some of the standout infotainment features of the Cooper S Clubman are:

  • 8.8" touchscreen with connected media
  • Six speaker audio system with AM/FM tuners (Lower Trims)
  • Harman-Kardon Music System (Iconic trim)
  • Touchscreen Navigation
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • Bluetooth connectivity for telephone and audio streaming

The Mini Cooper’s iconic looks are instantly recognizable, and the same is the case with this Clubman model. You just can’t miss its distinctive yet modern styling. Actually, you might consider it as a timeless design that looks good in any era. The front fascia imbibes the classic round headlamps and Mini grille which complement each other very well. It has definitely sized up in functionality and features but still manages to look as charming as its brothers. MINI is the only retro-designed car in this segment. The swing-out tailgate doors might be funky, but it hinders the rear visibility.

2022 Mini Clubman Wagon Top View

The sides are a plain affair with just the black cladding over the wheel arches and the doors. It gives a rugged look to the more retro-looking Clubman. At 168.5 inches, this is a pretty long MINI, but that doesn’t hinder the driving dynamics. The rear is unexciting with just two rectangle tail lamps and the swing-out tailgate doors. Apart from all this, you get multiple options to customize your Clubman as per your desired choice.

*Expected, 2021 rival models for comparison

The Mini is the lightest of the lot, and hence it offers that agile handling. It is shorter than its rivals and thus delivers lesser cargo capacity than them. It also offers lesser ground clearance than its rivals. The Outback offers the maximum ground clearance at 8.5 inches, which makes it a versatile performer both on-road and off-road. The Volvo V60 comes with the longest wheelbase, and we expect it to offer better high-speed stability. Some of the standout exterior features of the Cooper S Clubman are:

  • 17" alloy wheels
  • LED headlights with cornering lights
  • Panoramic Moonroof (Signature/Iconic)
  • Piano Black Exterior Trim (Iconic)
  • Complete selection of paint colors with contrasting Roof/Mirrors (Iconic)
  • Black Fender Flares

With the 2022 model, safety features have been given top priority. Also, it has a very rigid body which reduces body torque and helps in Go-Kart type handling. It offers many features like Active Driving Assistant with Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning, Rear View Camera, Automatic modes for headlights and rain-sensing windshield wipers, 8 airbags, TPMS, etc as standard, which is a good thing. It has not been rated by the NHTSA and the IIHS as of yet, but we believe it to perform very well whenever it gets tested. Some of the standout safety features of the Cooper S Clubman are:

  • Teleservices and Emergency Call
  • Active Driving Assistant with Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Cornering Lights
  • Theft Detection Radio
  • Panic Alarm

2022 Mini Cooper S Clubman V/S 2022 Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback is a decent option in the station wagon segment. It comes with the highest cargo capacity and has well-laid interiors too. It will also be priced closer to the Mini Clubman.

2022 Subaru Outback

Also, Subaru comes with AWD configuration as standard along with better ground clearance which just adds to its versatility. The Subaru Outback is a very strong contender in the station wagon segment.

2022 Mini Cooper S Clubman V/S 2022 Volvo V60

The 2022 Volvo V60 is longer than the Cooper S Clubman. Hence, it will provide better rear legroom space and a larger cargo capacity as well. So on the practicality front, the V60 will have an upper hand.

2022 Volvo V60

The Volvo V60 will offer better performance and slightly better fuel efficiency figures as compared to the Clubman. However, the Clubman will shine in the handling department due to its shorter wheelbase and will be more fun to drive. The Volvo V60 is also on the expensive side as compared to the Clubman.

2022 Mini Cooper S Clubman V/S 2022 Audi A4 Allroad

The 2022 Audi A4 Allroad will come with a more powerful engine and offer better performance. Also, it will be equipped with Audi’s legendary Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The Mini is a quirky little wagon that offers distinctive styling and agile handling.

2022 Audi A4 Allroad

The Mini gets an option for Apple CarPlay but misses out on Android Auto which is a bummer. The Audi will get both options. All in all, Mini cannot truly match the cargo capacity and more advanced technology inside the cabin of the Audi.

Final Verdict

The Mini Clubman has always been known for its agile handling and retro-modern styling. It performs well and offers many features as standard from the Classic trim itself. Being under BMW, we trust its safety potential and reliability. However, it misses out on better cargo capacity and performance that the competition offers. We won’t be afraid in recommending the 2022 Mini Cooper S Clubman to you but also suggest looking at other cars in the segment and then make a decision.
