In the segment, the Mini Clubman competes with the Fiat 500L Pop and Ford Focus SE Hatchback. Another major competitor to the ride is the Honda Civic Hatchback (LX). The rivals are better than the Clubman in terms of mileage and price. The ride, nonetheless, wins the game with performance, cargo capacity, and a galore of options to choose from.

2017 Mini Clubman Engine

8.0/10

"Today's Clubman is heavier than the previous model, but it didn't get enough of a power bump to offset the extra weight. Because of this, the base model isn't particularly spry. The larger 2.0-liter engine found in the Clubman S and JCW would certainly provide better performance." - Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

There are 3 distinct engine options available with the Mini Clubman Hatchback. The base trim, Cooper, features a 1.5L I-3 engine. It is capable of generating 134 hp of power and 162 lb.-ft. of torque. Cooper S spices up things with the 2.0L 4-cylinder engine, producing 189 horsepower and 207 lb.-ft. of torque.

The newly-introduced, high-end trim, John Cooper Works flaunts an enhanced version of the 2.0L 4-cylinder engine. In this case, the engine delivers 228 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. Unlike Cooper and Cooper S trims, John Cooper Works is available only with an all-wheel-drive system. Moreover, it boasts an 8-speed automatic transmission mode.

Acceleration

For the Clubman, sluggish acceleration is unavoidable. Having a requirement of 7 seconds for accelerating to 60 MPH is somewhat good. Ford Focus SE Hatchback and Fiat 500L Pop have even slower 0 to 60 MPH acceleration. The rides require 7.6 and 8 seconds, respectively, for hitting the 60 MPH.

Both Focus SE and 500L Pop cover a quarter-mile in 16.2 seconds. Clubman Cooper covers a quarter-mile faster, requiring only 15.4 seconds. Nonetheless, it is the Honda Civic Hatchback that offers the best quarter-mile covering time of 15.2 seconds in the league.

Ride and Handling

The performance of the base model is acceptable, not anything lively though. This is probably because the new iteration of the Mini Clubman Cooper is a little heavier than the previous facelift. However, the larger 2.0L engine in both Cooper S and JCW delivers a spry performance.

The hatch can be slow to respond at a time when a quick response is mandatory. Nonetheless, the braking power is the best in the class. It has a rather playful handling while the ride responds well to the initial steering inputs and displays an impeccable balance. The overall handling feel is simply composed.

Braking

The front brake in the 4-doored hatch measures 11 inches in size, while the rear one, however, is smaller, measuring only 10.2 inches. Despite its bulky weight, compared to its rivals, of 3015 lbs., Clubman exhibits an excellent braking power.

While Civic Hatchback, the closest competitor, necessitates 117 feet, Clubman comes to a complete halt in mere 107 feet. Fiat 500L Pop and Ford Focus SE requires a halting distance of 119 and 120 feet, respectively.

2017 Mini Clubman Fuel Economy

6.7/10

The combined fuel economy delivered by the 2017 Mini Clubman Hatchback lies somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. It offers 25 mpg in cities and 34 mpg on highways. Overall, the ride travels 28 miles in a gallon of gas. This is better than the 25 mpg offered by the Fiat 500L Pop.

MPG (highway) 34 39 38 30

Ford Focus SE offers an impressive combined fuel economy of 31 mpg. But it is the Honda Civic that leads the segment with 33 mpg of combined fuel economy.

2017 Mini Clubman Interior

7.9/10

"Mini used to champion style over function, sometimes to a fault, but has since evolved its design approach with the Clubman to successfully incorporate both. The company's commitment to heritage is evident in the distinctive 50/50-split cargo-area doors, which swing outward like a cargo van's." - Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

Though the Cooper has an optimal seating for 4, it can accommodate 5 persons naturally. The ride offers airy 40.2 and 41.4 inches of headroom and legroom in the front. The headroom is second only to 40.7 inches offered by the Fiat 500L Pop.

In the back, Clubman Hatchback has 38 and 34.3 inches of headroom and legroom to spare. While the headroom is ample, the legroom is somewhat congested. Fiat 500L Pop leads the pack with 38.7 and 36.7 inches of rear headroom and legroom, respectively.

Infotainment System

It has a generic infotainment system that comes with a 6.5-inch central display with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Moreover, the system flaunts navigational functionality.

A single USB port is available with the infotainment system along with the availability of HD Radio. To enhance the audio experience, the system comes with a 6-speaker sound system that has a decent sound quality.

Interior Features

Mini Clubman Hatchback has one of the most extravagant cabins and interiors in the segment. The insides of the ride involve construction from high-quality materials like -

  • Ample headroom, both in front and in the rear
  • Lavish, high-quality cabin and interiors
  • Multi-color ambient lighting
  • Optional leather upholstery
  • Power front seats
  • Quality cloth upholstery

Cargo Capacity

The hatch has the least-in-league cargo space of 17.5 cubic feet with the rear seat up. All its competitors offer a far better cargo capacity. The closest competitor to the Clubman is the Fiat Pop with 22.4 cubic feet. Ford Focus and Honda Civic are even better with 23.8 and 25.7 cubic feet of storage, respectively.

With the rear seat folded, the Mini has 47.9 cubic feet of storage space to spare. This is better than the 44.8 and 46.2 cubic feet of the same offered by the Ford Focus SE and Civic Hatchback, respectively. Fiat offers the most of the same space with a capacity of 68 cubic feet.

2017 Mini Clubman Exterior

6.7/10

"Even with the introduction of the longer, 4-door Hardtop, the Clubman looks like nothing else in the Mini lineup. At over 168 inches in length, it has nearly a foot on the 4-door Hardtop, though by most standards is still a small car. The Clubman is distinguished by a pair of rear doors that swing out, barn-door style." - Kelley Blue Book

Dimension and Weight

The 2017 iteration of the Clubman Hatchback supports a length, width, and height of 168.3, 70.9, and 56.7 inches, respectively. While the length is second only to 500L pop's 167.3 inches, the height is only 0.2-inch more than the Civic's 56.5 inches.

2017 Mini Clubman Competition

Mini Clubman vs Fiat 500L Pop

The 500L Pop from Fiat comes with an intercooled turbo premium unleaded I4 1.4L engine. It is capable of producing 160 hp of power along with 184 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission mode. Pricing options for the ride start from $20,995.

Moreover, it has the least-in-league combined fuel economy of 25 mpg. The ride, however, offers better rear seating than its competitors.

Mini Clubman vs Ford Focus SE

Yet another prime competitor to the Clubman is the Ford Focus SE Hatchback. The ride boasts a 2.0L Ti-VCT engine, capable of producing 160 horsepower and 146 lb.-ft. of torque. The latter is the least available in the segment. Focus SE Hatchback comes with an initial price-tag of $19,765.

Unlike the Mini Clubman, Ford Focus SE supports a 6-speed automatic transmission mode. The ride shoots to 60 MPH in 7.6 seconds. It has the smallest brakes in the competition, and also less powerful braking power. Ford Focus SE Hatchback, however, delivers an impressive combined fuel economy of 31 mpg.

Mini Clubman vs Honda Civic

With an opening bid of $19,700, Honda Civic Hatchback is the least expensive ride in its fraternity. The ride boasts a 1.5L I4 DOHC engine. It is able to generate 174 horsepower and 167 lb.-ft. of torque. Like the Clubman, Civic Hatchback flaunts a 6-speed manual transmission mode.

Honda Civic Hatchback accelerates to 60 MPH in 7 seconds, same as that of the Mini. However, Honda Civic Hatchback covers a quarter-mile 0.2 seconds faster than the aforementioned. Civic Hatchback is the least bulky ride in the competition with a total curb weight of 2815 lbs. Furthermore, it leads the pack with an excellent mileage of 33 mpg.

2017 Mini Clubman Final Verdict

2017 Mini Clubman Hatchback appears more to be a maxi than a mini. The ride offers a peppy performance and a sporty handling, especially with the upper trims. With almost 48 cubic feet of storage space and ample headroom, the ride is an excellent everyday driving option.

Clubman Hatchback is costlier than its competitors flaunting the same standard features. However, the ride offers a galore of optional features to fine-tune the ride as per the requirements call for. Overall, Mini Clubman Hatchback is an excellent package of style and utility.
