The Mini Clubman Cooper S is another offering that is focused more on practicality rather than performance. However, it doesn’t mean it is not good at engine performance. It gets a 2.0L Twin-Turbo Inline Four-Cylinder that puts out an impressive 189 horses. For starters, it is a 5 seater mini wagon that looks as good as the Mini Cooper S with a similar front fascia and hatchback design language. That being said, the rear end looks different and has its own personality. It still retains the signature Mini styling with some modern elements that add to the overall design language of the car. It also offers impeccable handling despite being bigger than the Mini Cooper. The quality of the materials used inside the cabin is absolutely spot on.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The Mini ups the ante of the interior design and fit and finish levels. It pretty much remains the same as the outgoing model with some minor changes for 2022. It gets a new 8.8-inch media touch screen infotainment system and lane departure warning across all the trim levels. The Navigation system is made standard on the Signature trim. The Mini Club man comes in two trim levels namely Cooper S and John Cooper Works which is further divided into three sub-trims which include Classic, iconic and Signature trims. The main trims are different from each other by the engine they offer, whereas the sub-trims vary by the features they offer. Some of the key competitors are the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Hyundai Veloster Turbo, and Volvo V60.

Features

The 2022 Mini Clubman Cooper S will be available in three different trims just like before starting from the Classic and topping up at Signature trim. Which trim should you buy?

The Iconic might be great but the trim that offers more value for money is the signature trim. It is the trim that gets a major upgrade from the base trim. As standard, it gets some cool features like Adjustable suspension dampers which offer a dynamic driving experience that would sweep you off your feet, a Panoramic sunroof that would totally enhance the in-cabin experience as well. Additionally, the Harmon Kardon Premium sound system dazzles you with stellar music quality. The other features include Faux leather-and-cloth combination upholstery, Satellite radio, LED headlights, automatic wipers, Heated and height-adjustable front seats, and a lot more.

2022 Mini Clubman Cooper S Release date:

The Mini has not announced the official release date for the 2022 Mini Clubman Cooper S yet but it is expected to go on sale by the end of this year.

Engine and Performance

8.0/10

This is the front where things get even more exciting and interesting as well. Under the hood, it is equipped with a tiny 2.0 liter which is turbocharged to provide a perfect balance between power and fuel efficiency as well. This engine puts out 189 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque which is comparatively lesser than its rivals but punchy enough to drive fast on nice roads with a linear powerband. Coming to the transmission, it gets either a 6-speed manual to amuse the driver or a 7 Speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that does all the work for you in a blink of an eye. It generates seamless shifts. Nevertheless, you will not get the experience of driving a manual transmission.

All the trims come with the same engine and front-wheel drive only. In terms of performance, the Mini Club rips to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds which is definitely fast but not quick enough to decimate its rivals. It covers a quarter-mile run in just 17.4 seconds with a top speed of over 141 mph. Although it may fall behind in terms of power, it is absolutely mind-blowing when it comes to handling, it does it cleverly and pulls enough g’s in the corner to freak you out in every corner. Altogether, it is such a well-balanced car with exemplary driving dynamics.

The Audi A4 Allroad Wagon is certainly the first-of-its-kind so it is not a direct competitor to the MINI but it all both have similarities in terms of what they are built to do, the Audi A4 all road is still pretty much the most powerful car here which cranks out 261 hp and 273 lb-ft of peak torque. In fact, all the cars here are more powerful than the Mini but some cars fail to offer the handling that you can experience behind the wheel of a Mini. The Volkswagen Golf GTI also does a fantastic job in terms of performance, it comes next to the Audi and zips to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. The quarter-mile can be covered in 14.3 seconds which is legit quick for a hatchback. In terms of top speed, the Volkswagen GTI is capable of hitting 155 mph.

Fuel Economy

9.0/10

The underpowered engine in the Mini Clubman Cooper S helps with its fuel efficiency. This British hatchback offers a claimed fuel economy of 26 MPG in the city and 34 mpg while cruising on the highway. In addition to this, it boasts a combined fuel economy of 29 mpg. Unfortunately, being the smallest fuel tank, the driving range is slightly behind the Audi A4 Off-Road. With a 13.2-gallon fuel tank capacity, the Mini Clubman Cooper S is able to traverse a distance of 343 miles in the city, 449 miles on the highway, and a combined 382.8 miles which offers a hassle-free driving experience but It could have offered an immense driving range if Mini had equipped it with a huge fuel tank.

A quick comparison of all these cars reveals that the fuel economy numbers offered by the Hyundai Veloster Turbo are decent and on par with the Mini which is the most fuel-efficient car. The Hyundai has built an iconic engine that is capable of delivering great performance and fuel efficiency as well. The cars like the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Audi A4 offroad offer significantly lower fuel economy figures. All the cars except Audi A4 All road is equipped with a similar-sized fuel tank of 13.2 gallons. However, with a larger 15.3-gallon fuel tank, the Audi keeps pace with the most fuel-efficient car in terms of driving range. The Audi A4 could easily cover a distance of 367 miles in the city, 459 miles on the highway, and a combined 367.2 miles.

Interior

8.0/10

Without a doubt, the Mini derives a modern interior with some classic elements to make the interior look timeless and absolutely spectacular. They never compromise on comfort even in the smaller Mini Cooper S. Hence, the interior of the Mini Clubman would be much better in terms of comfort and space. The design of the dashboard and center console reminds you of the classic Mini styling which is simply superb. The ambient lighting set up inside the car amplifies the commute experience even better. Even the base trim offers simulated leather upholstery.

As the trim level gets higher, the fit and finish levels get better. On the signature trim, you get a Panoramic sunroof and Faux leather-and-cloth combination upholstery. If this doesn’t suffice you, the top-of-the-line iconic trim offers a premium leather upholstery, a heads-up display on the front which shows the essential information about the car, and power-adjustable front sport seats. Well, it pretty much sums up how well equipped the Clubman is and what else could someone possibly want more than this. As for the interior dimensions, the Mini Clubman offers a great headroom in the front and rear as well which measures 40.2 inches and 38 inches respectively.

Comparing the competition, the cabin of all these cars are quite similar in terms of interior dimensions. However, the quality and finish of both Audi and Mini are better and more attractive than the other cars in this segment. The Hyundai Veloster, on the other hand, offers the most generous legroom space of 42.6 inches in both front and rear as well. The Audi A4 being a wagon offers the smallest cargo volume of 31.1 cubic feet. Nevertheless, all these cars come with a cabin that is much alike in terms of dimensions. Some of the standout and optional interior features of the Mini Clubman Cooper S are as follows:

The 8.8 inches has been made standard across all the trim levels which has a lag-free display with crisp graphics. As standard, it gets a 6 speaker audio system.

Exterior

7.5/10

With clean and striking exterior design cues, the Clubman Cooper S is clearly inspired by the looks of the Mini Cooper but considerably bigger. To put things into perspective, it looks like the evolved version of the Mini Cooper with more muscular body lines. It still retains the circular headlamps integrated with LED lights and Daytime running lights. With prominent cuts and a signature front grille fitted with an S logo on the front gives it has a strong presence on the roads. The taillights, however, look totally different from the Mini Cooper S. It gets large and bold-shaped taillights which are placed vertically, and a rather unusual rear hatchback door which gives it an outlandish yet appealing design when it comes to the rear fascia.

Furthermore, the Mini offers a plethora of customizable options for the exterior which includes a racing stripe livery that runs the entire length of the car. The color options on offer are also immense. It offers a lot of color options such as Moonwalk Gray Metallic, Island Blue Metallic, Chili Red, Midnight Black Metallic, and British Racing Green IV Metallic. Out of all these colors, the British Racing Green is the one that would grab a lot of attention on the streets. In terms of exterior dimensions, unlike the Mini Cooper, the Clubman gets a relatively larger body structure with more heftiness. It also comes with a ground clearance of 5.6 inches and a wheelbase of 105.1 inches.

Both Mini Clubman Cooper S and Hyundai Veloster share the same width of 70.9 inches which is 0.1 inches wider than Golf GTI’s body. In terms of weight, the Hyundai Veloster is the lightest resulting in better handling and power to weight ratio. On the contrary, the Audi is the heaviest car weighing 3847 lbs. Some other standout exterior features of the 2022 Mini Clubman include:

  • Automatic wipers
  • Heated mirrors
  • 17-inch alloy wheels

Safety

9.0/10

Unfortunately, neither NHTSA nor IIHS have officially tested and rated the 2022 Mini Clubman Cooper S for the crashworthiness test just like the outgoing model which has also not been tested yet. As far as safety is concerned, the Mini Clubman must be a pretty safe vehicle considering the fact that the Mini Cooper has a good reputation for safety. When it comes to standard features, all the trims get a lane departure warning system as standard for 2022. This includes a plethora of sophisticated safety and driver assistance features, as Mini doesn’t skimp on any single trim. Some other standout safety features include

  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Automated parking system
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Back-Up Camera

Competition

6.0/10

Mini Clubman Cooper S Vs Volkswagen Golf GTI:

The Volkswagen Golf GTI is the high-performance version of the Golf with improved performance and handling. As you can see, it smashes the Mini Clubman Cooper S in terms of performance. However, the Mini manages to dominate the Golf on every other front. It offers better mileage than the Golf GTI, better comfort, and excellent safety. On the whole, if you are into performance cars, Golf GTI would be a better option but when it comes to the family car, the Mini is the one that would satisfy all your needs.

Mini Clubman Cooper S Vs Hyundai Veloster Turbo:

The Hyundai Veloster Turbo has been around for a while now and it is one of the very few athletic and potent cars from the automaker. Despite having a smaller engine, it puts out more power output which is sufficient to knock down the Clubman and also deliver a surprisingly great fuel economy. By all means, the Hyundai Veloster seems to decimate the Mini. Also, it is quite cheaper than the Mini except for the quality and attention to detail.

Mini Clubman Cooper S Vs Audi A4 Off-road:

Both these cars are totally different but built to serve the same purpose. Although both these cars look completely different, they fall under the wagon category. Audi offers a strong power output and performance but the cabin is not as spacious as the MINI Cooper. Moreover, the MINI Clubman’s underpowered engine results in better fuel efficiency than the Audi. Both the cars are equally good in every aspect. It is just a matter of taste here when it comes to buying.

Final Verdict

7.0/10

Some Purists might not like the idea of Mini being a wagon but the Mini Clubman offers more practicality and versatility to make your life easier and better than owning a Mini Cooper. Although some rivals may beat the Mini in terms of performance, it is still a power-packed car with great driving dynamics and class-leading fuel economy. It also comes with a spacious interior with great comfort levels. Altogether, it is such a desirable car that won a lot of hearts. Therefore, it is worth checking out if you are in the market for a premium wagon.
