Motorsport legend John Cooper recognized the racing potential of Mini and created his own version for the track. Its short overhangs and the transversely mounted engine allowed drifting at corners effortlessly and the go-cart feeling being synonymous with the Mini. The JCW won many titles at the Monte Carlo rally and also all over the world. The modern day JCWs have also impressed people with its handling and ride quality over and over again. The 2019 variant of the Clubman JCW comes with a 2.0 liter inline four which generates 228 hp and comes mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Inside, it is a typical Mini with circular dials everywhere and loads of JCW emblems. It looks pretty good on papers and yes, it is a hoot to drive- the JCW can even tackle corners with ease.

Performance wise, the Clubman aligns with the likes of the Honda Civic type R, Subaru WRX STI, and Volkswagen Golf R. Let’s see how it stands against the rivals.

2019 Mini Clubman John Cooper Works Hatchback Engine and Performance

Boil it down to pure practicalities, and some key rivals deliver a better combination of ride and handling prowess, powertrain refinement and performance, interior accommodations, and value. But ultimately, few other cars have the cool-factor, or can make daily life as fun, as this XL-sized Mini Clubman."- Consumer Reports

The Mini Clubman uses the standard turbocharged 2.0 inline four cylinders like in the Cooper S. It is a more potent version which is tuned to put out 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to an 8 speed automatic transmission and the power is routed to all the four wheels.

The Mini JCW's Twin Power Turbo generates a substantial 236 ft-lbs @ 1250 rpm. The engine builds up the torque immediately and holds it throughout the engine's power curve. Peak torque comes in at 1250 rpm, which is much earlier than the competition. So, reaching higher speeds requires lesser effort from the driver.

The Honda Civic Type R and Subaru WRX STI stays ahead in performance because of the larger displacement and produces the highest amount of horses. The Mini Cooper JCW and VW Golf GT I puts out similar output despite of huge power difference.

Acceleration

The turbocharged four cylinders of the Clubman JCW takes you to 60 mph from standstill in just 6.2 seconds. You will never feel short on power with the JCW and this turbocharged powertrain gives you much required excitement. The JCW feels zippy in highway passes and merging with traffic. The sports mode does help you get a little more oomph from the engine. It covers the quarter mile under 14 seconds and tops out at 148 mph.

The Honda Civic Type R and Subaru WRX STI go neck to neck in 0 to 60 runs because of surplus horsepower. The Clubman JCW and Golf GTI tail the faster ones by a mere distance.

Ride and Handling

The Clubman JCW comes with a lively turbocharged inline four which performs like most of the hot hatches. Handling is quick and firm suspension helps in controlled body roll over corners, the same go-kart feeling you get with Mini’s. The ride is excellent on smooth roads and undulation are well muffled by the suspension.

The Hardtop's reputation for playful driving dynamics is confirmed, even on this base model. The high level of confidence encourages spirited driving. The steering is precise and great for the driver who demands enthusiasm. For day to day use it can feel a bit quick or sensitive as it reacts to small inputs. The Clubman surprisingly agile and predictable at corners because of its small size.

The Clubman JCW comes all-wheel drive system which is beneficial for traction and stability. The upgraded suspension is firmer and helps to improve grip on corners. The turbocharger has been tweaked, too, and is made from a material that can withstand extreme heat.

Braking

The Mini Clubman has got exceptional braking performance and it is a stopping superstar. The Pedal travel is small and it smooth to operate in the city and freeways. Clubman remains stable in an emergency braking situation and only require 107 feet’s to stop form 60 mph. It is an excellent number despite of all-season tires.

The Mini uses a Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) on corners which monitor steering input and acceleration to determine the direction you want to go. In the case your Mini starts to stray, then the system applies correct brake pressure to individual brakes and adjusts engine torque to maintain the correct line. Also, the automatic transmission makes an abrupt noise when you come to a sudden stop.

2019 Mini Clubman John Cooper Works Hatchback Fuel Economy

This is where the Mini Clubman lacks as most of the rivals delivers better miles per gallon. It is able to return 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway when combined with the 6-speed manual transmission. 2019 Mini Clubman John Cooper Works Hatchback Interior

8.0/10

"More so than even the Countryman, [the Clubman is] a small family vehicle … with a luxurious feature [list], everyday comfort, and versatility, wrapped up in a shouty style that fits the brand. But unlike its hefty, high-riding brother, the Clubman is better at putting a stupid, silly, mile-wide smile on your face. And that remains the highest compliment we can pay to a Mini, no matter how many doors it has." - Autoblog

Seating and Comfort

From the inside, the Clubman is an homage to the classic mini design with a large circular infotainment screen and gauge cluster. Like the countryman, the Mini Clubman adds much required legroom and cargo capacity to the rear. The 2019 Mini Clubman has the correct mix of innovation and retro kitsch. The huge circular central display 6.5-inch infotainment screen, and underneath it are flips and switches that look retro, yet control modern amenities.

In back, the Clubman touts 2.5 more inches of legroom than in a standard Cooper model, which helps in increasing legroom. The seats are comfortable and provide ample amount of support for a long journey. Taller individuals may feel short of legroom. You will see many JCW emblems on the inside with

2019 Mini Clubman John Cooper Works Hatchback Exterior

Like Clubman models before it, the latest version retains its signature swing-out rear doors instead of an upward-rising liftgate. In every other way, this little British car has evolved, especially in technology, creature comforts, and overall refinement. Like all Minis, the 2019 Clubman is fun to drive and makes a statement wherever it goes, but it is premium appeal comes with an associated price, especially as you climb trims or add options.- Kellybluebook

Dimension and Weight

The Mini Clubman JCW is definitely size up in terms of functionality and looks as charming as its cousin hatchbacks. It is artfully constructed keeping practicality in mind. At 168 inches, this is the longest Mini ever but the driving dynamics remains unchanged. Aggressively styled front and rear bumper for aerodynamic efficiency is the only difference between the Cooper and JCW clubman.

The Clubman has a pair of swing-out doors which looks funky but hinders outward visibility in some way.

2019 Mini Clubman John Cooper Works Hatchback Competition

Subaru WRX STI

The Subaru is bigger in dimension than the Clubman and redesigned a few years ago. Subaru also comes with a standard all-wheel drive which is optional in the clubman. The overall performance of the WRX feels better than the Mini Clubman. The Clubman has better handling and fuel efficiency too. The Clubman has an edge in terms of practicality but if fuel efficiency is your concern then go with the Clubman.

Honda Civic Type R

The radical looking Honda Civic Type R impresses like a hatchback. The turbocharged engine is boon which is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Civic has far better interior space when compared with the Clubman. In terms of engine output, the Clubman lacks behind and also in overall performance. The Honda Civic comes in available in a wide variety of body styles. It offers great fuel efficiency and best in class driving dynamics. The Clubman is good, but the Civic is a bit better – and it costs about the same. Go with the Honda.

Volkswagen Golf GTI

Even with excess curb weight, the VW Golf GTI achieves identical 0-60 acceleration figure of 6 seconds. The GTI undercuts the Mini JCW in pricing. The GTI can easily accommodate 5 passengers and offers more practicality.

The GTI has established itself in this segment. GTIs 2.0-liter engine produces 220 hp and comes mated to 6-speed manual transmission which is very rewarding with its slick gear shifts. When it comes to the automatic transmission, the GTIs DSG is a better performer than the Minis 6-Speed automatic which feels sluggish at lower speeds.

2019 Mini Clubman John Cooper Works Hatchback Final Verdict

The 2019 Mini Clubman JCW can be considered as the most fun to drive subcompact with a pleasant interior. It lacks all-around competence of rivals but comes with a roomier interior and ample amount of cargo space. You get go-cart like fun driving dynamics with exceptional performance.
