The automotive world would always be thankful to BMW for reviving the iconic Mini brand and its best efforts to offer compact vehicles in a retro-modern style. The Mini Cooper is the most popular model among the vehicle portfolio of the brand. Apart from the iconic hatchback, the car is also offered in a convertible form and is in its third-generation model.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

For the 2022 model year, the Cooper Convertible is all set to receive a facelift which will include a reworked exterior and interior design. Mechanically, the car will remain majorly unchanged. In the segment, the car competes with the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Ford Mustang Convertible.

2022 Mini Cooper Features

As per the latest information, the 2022 Cooper convertible will be offered in two trims:- the Cooper convertible and the Cooper S convertible. The Cooper S convertible is covered in a separate review. The base Cooper convertible will come with all the features from the outgoing model along with some new and revised features as well. There are some optional packages that further equip the car with more features but the price tag rises quickly. Some of the packages include Premium Package, Signature Upholstery Package, Sidewalk Package, and Iconic Package among others.

We would suggest you opt for the Iconic Package to have a complete experience with the convertible. You can go for the Signature Package if you don’t want to spend much to have interior features.

2022 Mini Cooper Engine and Performance

The upcoming Mini Cooper convertible will retain its powertrain from the outgoing model hence the base engine is still the puny 1.5-liter B38A15 turbo I-3 unit from BMW. For the 2022 model year, however, the excellent and fun-to-drive 6-speed manual transmission will return and the optional 7-speed DCT unit will stay though. The specs might suggest that the motor is too small and underpowered, the small dimensions and the light curb weight of the car makes it an absolute hoot to drive.

The motor dishes out a maximum of 134 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of maximum torque. To spice things up, the exhaust system is tuned to produce a sporty note which sounds nice with the roof folded. The motor along with the 6-speed manual unit will make the car a nimble urban cruiser as well as a decent highway cruiser too. The acceleration times are also decent for a small convertible.

The Ford Mustang convertible is a close competitor of the Cooper convertible and the latter, with its higher packages costs as much as the former. The Mustang, however, has the best performance and power figures here despite housing a turbocharged I-4 motor. The Mazda MX-5 Miata has a slightly better horsepower rating than the Cooper but a lower torque output than the latter.

Braking Performance

For a small car like the Mini Cooper, it gets ideal-sized brakes for both front and rear. The braking performance, however, isn’t something you’d expect from a car that handles like nothing else in the segment. The car covers an exceptionally long distance of 134 ft to come to a halt from 60mph. The brakes are responsive though and feel confident within the urban limits.

The Ford Mustang, naturally, has the best braking performance with its biggest sets of brakes. The Mazda MX-5 Miata also impresses with its braking prowess by covering only 111 ft to come to a halt.

2022 Mini Cooper Fuel Economy

The Mini Cooper is quite serious when it comes to offering a commendable fuel economy. The car returns a maximum of 26mpg in the city, an impressive 37mpg out on the highways, and a combined mileage of 30mpg. With a small gas tank of 11 gallons, the Cooper offers some decent overall driving range figures as well.

The Ford Mustang convertible, given its performance and power stats, offers the least fuel economy figures but the numbers are impressive though. The Mazda MX-5 Miata has almost similar fuel economy figures to the Cooper as well as overall driving range numbers too.

2022 Mini Cooper Interior

The cabin of the Mini Cooper convertible has its own set of quirks and looks quite fashionable too. But it doesn’t quite fulfill the basic requirements of a passenger cabin to some extent i.e offering ample space. Thankfully though being a convertible, once you fold down the roof there will be unlimited headroom, but the legroom and shoulder room remains quite restricted. The 2022 update will see a new dashboard design, a new steering wheel, and other interior design updates. Apart from that, the cabin will offer a decent list of features but you need to shell more money to get the luxuries. The cargo capacity isn’t great either, measuring only at 5.7 cu-ft.

Surprisingly, the Ford Mustang has poor headroom with the roof in place but offers a spacious cabin with 4 seats. The Mazda MX-5 Miata is also as cramped as the Cooper and has the least amount of trunk space on offer.

Some interior features are:

  • Power-adjustable front seats
  • Universal garage door opener
  • Remote engine start
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel and seat upholstery
  • Steering-mounted audio controls

What’s there to keep you entertained?

For the 2022 facelift, the Mini Cooper will get the optional 8.8-inch touchscreen display as standard along with other features. Sadly though, some handy features such as navigation, Apple CarPlay, and wireless device charging is offered as optional. Satellite radio is standard though along with Bluetooth and auxiliary audio input options. The infotainment interface is decent with crisp graphics and good visibility.

Some features include:

  • 8.8-inch infotainment display
  • Apple CarPlay(optional)
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Wireless phone charging(optional)

2022 Mini Cooper Exterior

Smart and quirky exterior design is the factor that has kept the Mini Cooper afloat. BMW gave the car a more modern exterior design in its third-generation upgrade but the 2022 model will arrive with a fresh exterior design. The update will include a redesigned front bumper and rear bumper along with redesigned headlamp units too. The most notable exterior feature is going to be the optional color-shifting Multitone roof.

The Ford Mustang needs no introduction and comes with some bulky and muscular exterior dimensions. Both the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Mini Cooper are extremely compact and have a sub-100 inch wheelbase. The compact dimensions make the duo triumph over other vehicles in the city traffic and tight parking spaces.

Some exterior features include:

  • Halogen headlamps
  • LED DRLs & taillights
  • Black grille with chrome surrounds
  • Chrome door handles
  • Chrome window trim
  • Chrome headlamp bezels

2022 Mini Cooper Safety

The outgoing model of the Mini Cooper hasn’t been crash-tested by the NHTSA and the IIHS partially tested it, giving it a Poor rating in the headlights department and Advanced for the front crash prevention system. We expect the upcoming model will do better in the safety tests. Apart from that, the car comes with most of the basic features such as ABS, TPMS, and Traction control.

Some standout safety features include:

  • Front & Rear Parking Sensors
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Rearview Camera

2022 Mini Cooper Competition

Mini Cooper convertible vs Ford Mustang convertible

Both the cars have their own share of positive and negative points. The Mustang is big and more powerful than the Cooper and also has a more spacious cabin. The Mini Cooper might be cramped on the inside but has compact exterior dimensions and excellent handling that makes it a better city car than the Mustang.

Mini Cooper vs Mazda MX-5 Miata

The MX-5 Miata gives a tough competition to the Cooper with its sporty looks and better performance. On the inside, the Cooper and the Miata match almost evenly with a similarly cramped cabin but a quirky design. On the outside too, both the cars are evenly matched with compact dimensions and great driveability.

2022 Mini Cooper Final Verdict

If you’re a die-hard fan of the retro-modern Cooper and want to enjoy top-less driving without spending much, the upcoming Cooper convertible is definitely worth the wait. It will offer a great driving experience with the 6-speed manual gearbox, more stylish exterior styling, and a more quirky cabin as well. On the fuel economy aspect too, it won’t disappoint you.
