If you find the Mini Cooper Convertible rather cutesy and would like a spec’d-up version that packs aggressiveness and athleticism into your subcompact vehicle, then the John Cooper Works iteration is the best fit in the segment for you. The JCW variants differ from the conventional Mini’s in ways more than one; they feature more powerful engine options, have enchanting design elements, and include performance-focused parts like a better suspension system and a powerful braking setup.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW is all you’d wish for in your subcompact convertible and extends its likability with a new and refreshed fascia, both on the inside and outside, while the feature list also sees minor improvements. It is still an agile vehicle that drives nimbly, but suffers from flaws like cramped rear seats and constrained cargo capacity. While there are only a finite number of competitors, the JCW Convertible is best placed against the likes of the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible, 2021 Ford Mustang Convertible, and 2021 BMW 2-Series Convertible.

2022 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Convertible Features

While confirmation regarding price and trims are yet to be made, we expect the 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW to be available in similar trim levels which include the base Classic, mid-level Signature, and top-tier Iconic trims. At a base MSRP of $39,750 for the soft-top variant, the Mini does command higher prices than most of its competitors. It makes use of an inline-4 unit and is channeled as a front-wheel-drive unit only. It gets newer features like a standard 8.8-inch touchscreen unit, a digital gauge cluster, and lane-departure warning.

We Recommend

The 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW features a single-engine, drivetrain, and transmission option. Thus, performance from all three variants is eerily similar. The final buying decision will, consequently, depend on the buyers’ appetite for features. While the Iconic trim is the best bet in the segment, it’s heavily overpriced.

We recommend opting for the 2022 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW Signature that at only $1,000 from the base variant adds to the vehicle, features like dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and satellite radio. While features like Apple CarPlay are exclusive to the top-tier trim only, the mid-level Signature does feature other connectivity options.

Release Date

Mini has not yet revealed the release date for the 2022 Cooper Convertible JCW. But if sources are believed they are expected to hit showrooms by the third quarter of the year.

2022 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Convertible Engine and Performance

Amidst a number of changes to the 2022 MY, the Mini Cooper Convertible JCW retains the powertrain setup from the outgoing model only. It continues to be equipped with the 2.0L twin-power turbo inline-4 unit that produces 228hp of power and 236lb.-ft of torque. It makes use of a standard 8-speed sport automatic transmission and is channeled as an FWD variant only. The 6-speed manual transmission, however, is not available even as optional on the convertible variant.

The John Cooper Works variants popularly known as the JCW variants vaunt improved performance as their strongest suit. While the performance figures for the current iteration are not yet known, they are expected to be in a similar arena as the outgoing model. For reference, the 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW could sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds and fly past the quarter-mile mark in 16.2 seconds.

2022 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Convertible Engine Bay

While its performance is underwhelming for its class, the 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW’s strength will continue to be its driving capabilities. Thanks to its smaller dimensions, it is easily maneuverable in the city, and the availability of Brembo brakes and stiffened suspension system, allow for a more controlled ride. The engineers at JCW have also minutely altered the suspension system to make it a better performer on cornering roads and turns. The steering feels light and with its razor-sharp handling enhances the driving pleasure. The only evident drawback in the ride quality we see is how the Mini becomes noticeably nervous when crossing rough patches of road.

Each subcompact convertible in the segment makes use of a turbocharged inline-4 unit. While the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible is the only RWD variant on offer, it makes use of a distinct 6-speed manual transmission as the Ford. The 2021 BMW 2-Series Convertible is an FWD variant and makes use of a similar 8-speed automatic transmission as the Mini. Due to its smaller size and lower curb weight, it manages best-in-class acceleration clocking 5.3 seconds and 13.9 seconds in the 60mph and quarter-mile run.

The 2021 Ford Mustang Convertible, however, is the most powerful vehicle on the block. Compared to its competitors, its power and torque output of 310hp and 350lb.-ft of torque are considerably higher even than the 2022 Camaro that ranks second in class and manages 275hp and 295lb.-ft. While the Mustang’s acceleration is not segment-defining, Ford offers an optional 10-speed automatic transmission unit that when mated to the car allows the performance to improve exponentially with the 60mph sprint taking only 5 seconds.

2022 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Convertible Fuel Economy

Like its acceleration capabilities, the 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW’s fuel figures have not yet been ascertained. In the absence of these, we can only estimate how the convertible will perform when tested. We expect the subcompact convertible to maintain its frugality as it did with its previous iterations. What will remain consistent, however, is its fuel tank that has a total capacity of 11.6-gallons, which is lower than its competitors.

The 2021 BMW 2-Series Convertible is the most efficient vehicle in the segment and is rated at 24 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highway. Combined it averages 27 miles per gallon of fuel. Both the Chevrolet and Ford manage similar efficiencies of 23 MPG. However, when the range is concerned the 2022 Camaro Convertible gains ascendancy in its segment with its largest fuel tank of 19-gallons and manages the highest range in the segment of 380 and 570 miles in the city and on the highway, respectively.

2022 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Convertible Interior

Perhaps, the most noticeable update in the 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW is the standardization of the large central infotainment display screen. It now also features a digital gauge cluster behind the steering wheel in place of the analog unit and while all other things remain unchanged, the cabin still reeks of quirkiness and upholds a luxurious and upmarket aura.

The 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW can seat four passengers. However, the rear seats do feel cramped and immensely restrict movement. The front occupants, however, will find themselves in a comfortable position with the seats providing utmost knee and under-thigh support. Thanks to its cushioning and bolstering, the seats do not feel narrow and are comfortable for long drives as well. Mini features two doors for ingress and egress and while the front seats are easily accessible, the rear-seat passengers will find themselves struggling for space, with the front seats folded.

2022 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Convertible Front Seats

In terms of fit and finish, however, the JCW feels premium even from the base variant. The use of high-quality materials justifies the price tag that the vehicle carries. As standard, it comes equipped with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery for the seats, and soft-touch plastics that cover the dash. While visibility ahead is clear and commanding, the rearward visibility feels compromised when the cloth top is folded down.

Each subcompact convertible in the segment suffers from the problem of smallish trunks and compromised space for rear-seat passengers. However, even in the presence of these persistent problems, the 2021 BMW 2-Series Convertible manages the highest legroom for the second-row occupants and also features the largest trunk in the segment that has a capacity of 11.8 cubic feet.

On the other hand, the 2021 Ford Mustang has maximum space upfront and also follows closely in the cargo capacity segment managing a trunk volume of 11.4 cubic feet. While the Mini and Chevrolet also reflect plushness in their build, they lack considerably in cargo capacity having space of 6 and 7.3 cubic feet, respectively.

Some of the standout interior features of the 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW include:

  • Dual-zone Climate Control
  • Leather-wrapped Steering Wheel
  • Leather Upholstery
  • Cruise Control
  • Interior Air Filtration
  • Front and Rear Cupholders

How intuitive is the infotainment system of the 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW?

The most noticeable change to the infotainment system is the availability of the 8.8-inch touchscreen as standard. The centrally-placed round display unit is the most unconventional setup in the segment but adds a hint of distinction to the vehicle. It’s easy to use and with the updates to its interface, it has become all the more user-friendly and intuitive.

2022 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Convertible Infotainment System

The infotainment system on the 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW comes equipped with standard features like USB Connection, AM/FM Stereo, and HD Radio. While Apple CarPlay and navigation system are available as optional with all trim levels, Android Auto still fails to make its way into the system.

Some of the standout optional and standard specifications include:

  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • New Digital Gauge Cluster
  • optional Harman Kardon Premium Sound System
  • Wireless Charging (available as optional only)
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • Standard 6-speaker audio sound system
  • Smart Device Integration

2022 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Convertible Exterior

2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW undergoes subtle design changes that leave an indelible impact on how the car now looks. Have a glance at the revised design elements and the new front and rear bumper that now adorn a more aggressive look catch your eye in an instance and they feature aerodynamic air vents, the primary motive of which is to aid performance, but they also add to the visual appeal already on offer.

2022 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Convertible Front Angle View

With 2022 MY, the Convertible variant of the JCW model sees a change in the headlights that now have been blacked out and look devilish with the daytime running lights that break the dark color scheme. The front grille is now larger and imposing and the red line running through the upper half adds an element of quirkiness to the design, Perhaps, what we do like most about the refreshed design is the presence of the ‘Union Jack’ even on the soft cloth top.

In terms of dimensions and proportions, the 2022 Cooper Convertible JCW remains unchanged. Though it is smaller than most of its competitors, its size feels apt for the subcompact convertible segment. It is 151 inches long, 68 inches wide, and 55.7 inches tall. While the ground clearance and curb weight are not yet known, it sports a wheelbase of 98.2 inches.

All three contemporary vehicles in the segment are larger than the 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW. While the 2021 Ford Mustang and 2022 Chevrolet Camaro have a similar length of 188.3 inches, the latter sports the longest wheelbase of 110.7 inches. The 2021 BMW 2-Series is relatively smaller but is the tallest in the segment at 55.8 inches, allowing for better headroom on the inside. In addition, the Mustang Convertible sports a ground clearance of 5.7 inches, which is adequate as per segment standards.

In terms of design, the 2022 Camaro and 2021 Mustang have undergone recent changes and look modern and appealing. While the BMW 2-Series Convertible is slated for a design revision in 2022. Some of the exterior features of the 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW include:

  • Fog Lamps
  • LED head and taillights
  • New design for alloy wheels
  • 17/18-inch alloy wheels
  • Soft cloth-top with Union Jack print

2022 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Convertible Safety

The 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW being the latest entrant into the market has not yet been tested by the NHTSA and IIHS. However, we expect it to perform appreciably, given it features optional Brembo brakes and other standard features like a comprehensive airbag system and emergency braking assist. Apart from safety, the JCW is also reliable and comes with a multi-faceted warranty policy that includes a basic and powertrain warranty.

Some of the standout safety features of the 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW include:

  • Tire-pressure monitoring system
  • Lane Departure Warning System
  • Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control
  • Post Collision Safety System
  • Driver Assistance Safety Package
  • Automatic Emergency Braking

2022 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Convertible Competition

2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW vs 2022 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

The Chevrolet Camaro is the only other 2022 MY available in the market for subcompact convertibles. Like the 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW, it garners attention for its vivid design and performance that feels definitive and to the point. The latest iteration of the Camaro Convertible comes with minimum changes and it continues to be the nimble rider that is quick to respond to throttle inputs, despite being supremely frugal.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

It features higher space on the inside but lacks the refinement that Mini vaunts. While both competitors feature intuitive infotainment systems and are a host to class-leading safety specifications, the Camaro does come equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as standard. In a segment that trades feature-to-feature, the Chevrolet provides more value for the money spent.

2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW vs 2021 Ford Mustang Convertible

The 2021 Ford Mustang Convertible is one of the most preferred muscle cars in the segment. It looks on par with its competitors, performs appreciably all throughout, and unlike its competitors, provides two engine and transmission options to choose from. When pitted against the 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW, the final decision is hard to make.

2021 Ford Mustang Convertible

While the Ford Mustang features the most powerful engine option in the segment, it lacks marginally on efficiency. However, the Mustang’s oneness lies in its bewitching design and larger dimensions that bestow greater space on the inside. With almost double the cargo space, the Ford does seem to be a viable proposition in the segment and with a price tag that is almost $8,000 lower than the Mini, it is the better option amongst the two.

2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW vs 2021 BMW 2-Series Convertible

The 2021 BMW 2-Series Convertible and 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW share the same roots and heritage, but that is where the similarity between the two vehicles starts to fade. In all visible aspects, the BMW is the better option out of the two. Its quicker, rather efficient, and manages to perform all its tasks with great aplomb.

2021 BMW 2-Series Convertible

The 2021 BMW 2-Series features a 2.0L turbocharged unit that with its 8-speed automatic transmission manages sublime performance. On the inside, it has higher passenger space and though rear seats feel cramped, they are better than the ones on offer with the Mini. It gains ascendancy over its competitors with the highest trunk volume in the segment and while it lacks modernity in its design, the 2022 MY, could be the year that introduces refreshed design cues.

2022 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Convertible Final Verdict

In isolation from its competitors, the 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible JCW is one of the most sought-after vehicles you can opt for. It features a potent engine option, a hassle-free transmission system, and an optional adaptive suspension system that allows for smooth and supple ride with minimal stiffness. However, in direct comparison, it starts to lose out in a number of aspects. It lacks the performance potential you get in the Mustang or the Camaro and also feels less practical than the 2-Series Convertible that provides ample passenger and cargo space. Though, it’s the best-looking subcompact convertible in the market, the Mini’s price fails to justify its performance and with a number of safety and infotainment features only available as optional, we would recommend looking out for other options in the segment.
