Overview

When it comes to living in the crowded metros, the Mini is a perfect fit for folks who want their cars to have a small footprint but with a feel of agility and power. Mini has now launched the all-new 2018 Mini Countryman SE Hybrid, which allows people to not only reduce their footprint on the road but also on the planet.

With the advent of the hybrid powertrain, the Mini now appeals to an even broader audience. Although the dimensions of the Mini Countryman are now much bigger than its small origins, but it still remains a favorite amongst the city dwellers who want a premium small-ish car

The car is powered by a combination of a conventional gas burner with an electric motor working in tandem to send power to the rear wheels. Yes, the car loses out a bit on the nimbleness when compared to the regular Mini, but it promises to provide a big discount on the fuel bills.

“All Minis still feel like a Mini—even the Countryman—and that’s a good thing. The new plug-in hybrid version is upfront about its capabilities, but its price may deter some shoppers.” – thecarconnection

Engine and Transmission

The propelling power in the Mini is derived from a 1.5L gas motor which churns out 134 hp and an electric motor which churns out 87 hp. Power goes to all the 4 wheels through the powertrain which works together in synergy. The power delivery is certainly as enthusiastic as one would expect but it gets to where it's going eventually.

In comparison, the Mini Hybrid is the most powerful vehicle amongst its rivals at 221 hp. The only vehicle that comes close to the Mini is the Nissan Rogue Hybrid at 176 hp.

Acceleration

The extra weights of the battery hamper the overall dynamics including the acceleration of the car. The SUV does a 0-60 mph run in 5.8 seconds and goes to complete a quarter of a mile in 14.6 seconds. The acceleration is hasty but sans the theatricals of the regular Mini.

The SUV smokes its rivals in terms of acceleration. All the rivals in the segment are at least around a couple of seconds slower than the Mini.

Ride and Handling

Minis are known to nimble and agile in handling. But, the Mini Hybrid certainly misses out on its trademark characteristics. It does feel a bit wobbly around the corners due to extra weights it lugs behind the rear seats. The lack of drama adds to the already leadless nature of the car.

But, the Mini is proficient when it comes to its home turf, the urban terrain. Although it has gained a lot of size in the past but it still maintains its urban prowess by being nifty and comfortable around the city.

Braking

None of the braking stats for the Mini Countryman Cooper Hybrid as of now. But, being one of the most expensive trims in the Mini lineup, one can expect it to at least share the braking gadgetry with its cousins.

Fuel Economy

7.9/10

The first and foremost thing that a buyer expects out a hybrid vehicle is the savings on fuel bills. The Mini Hybrid is able to return only 27 mpg combined. It is only a decent figure in the world of the hybrid vehicle and is certainly going to disappoint its future buyers

The Mini Countryman Hybrid SUV is the least fuel efficient vehicle in the segment at 27 mpg. The most fuel-efficient vehicle in the segment is the Nissan Rogue Hybrid at 34 mpg.

Seating and Comfort

A common complaint in the Minis of yesteryear was the lack of a quality interior. Mini has worked diligently on the issue and has provided the 2018 Mini Countryman Hybrid with an interior that’s worthy of the price tag. The car now has a lot of soft-touch materials generously spread around the cabin and on the front dashboard.

The interior still embraces the good ol’ roundish charm of the past Minis. The seats are bolstered well enough to offer a good amount of thigh support. The rear seats might get a bit cumbersome for the taller folks but it is still feasible for all the others.

The Mini Hybrid, owing to its smallish dimensions, is the least spacious car in the front amongst its rivals. But, when it comes to the rear, the Mini offers the most amount of legroom than any of its rivals.

  • Circular rev counter in the middle
  • Heads Up Display

Cargo volume

As is the case with a lot of hybrids of the day, there is a big compromise on the boot space due to the placement of the batteries. The Mini Countryman Cooper Hybrid too suffers from the same trend and features only a paltry 47.4 ft.cube of cargo volume in its boot.

Amongst its rivals, the Mini Hybrid has the smallest boot by quite some margin. The Toyota RAV4 with its elongated back has the largest boot amongst its rivals.

Towing Capacity

Towing capacity stats are yet to be made available for the Mini Hybrid but, you’ll seldom see a Mini owner trying to tow stuff behind the rear. Judging by the trend, the towing capacity on the Mini would certainly not be something to boast about.

“In the Mini world, the Countryman looks least like the archetype 2-door Hardtop. But that doesn't mean it doesn’t look like a Mini at all; it's as if the Mini were stretched and lifted.”- Kelley Blue Book

Dimensions and Weight

The Mini Countryman Cooper has come a long way since its humble origin. The design is still one of the most enticing and iconic car design ever. It appeals a lot to the millennials as well as the younger generation due to its cute but road presence demanding dimensions.

The Mini Hybrid is one of the most compact cars amongst the rivals. The Lexus NX 300H, on the other hand, is the heaviest while the Nissan Rogue Hybrid is the lightest but also the longest amongst the rivals.

Competition

Mini Countryman Hybrid VS Toyota RAV4

The RAV4 has been an evergreen Toyota vehicle. It has been around since quite a while now and has established itself in the market. It sells in big numbers due to a few good reasons. It has trim for every type of buyer. Toyota has also given a makeover to the 2018 model and has added a host of safety and creature comfort features to elongate the already long list

But, the vehicle is not a hybrid vehicle which limits its appeal to the buyers. It does nothing for the environment other than polluting it. Hence, if you want a hybrid car, the Mini Hybrid is the way to go.

Mini Countryman Hybrid VS Nissan Rogue Hybrid

The Nissan Rogue has been winning a lot of praise in the North American market lately and for good reason too. The exterior design is spot on and captures the attention of its prospective buyers, the young gen. When it comes to fuel savings, the car right up there with the fully electric cars with a wonderful fuel economy.

But, the car lacks the interior and overall premiums of the Mini. Not to mention, the brand value of Mini is much higher too. But, that doesn’t concern you too much, the Nissan Rogue Hybrid is a viable option

Mini Countryman Hybrid VS Lexus NX 300H`

Lexus has been pioneering the hybrid tech since quite a while now. The NX 300H is the best example of all the work towards they have been putting towards hybrids. The NX 300H is easily the most striking car amongst its rivals. Being a premium product, the car looks well and has a classy interior.

Final Verdict

The Mini Countryman Cooper Hybrid has captured the true essence of small cars without even being a small anymore quite perfectly. The Mini branding has a lot to do with the success of this car. But, that doesn’t make it any less worthy of a vehicle. The interior quality has improved by leaps and bound and beats the competitors hands down. All in all, the Mini hybrid is a complete vehicle that has the potential to be on the buyer’s list.
