Detailed Review

The small car market is the world's biggest car selling market. These cars are easy on the pocket, are fuel efficient as well, also they can be parked in the tinniest of spaces. The new MINI hardtop hatchback is definitely one of them, and even goes a step further, with the amount of features on offer. This car is here to stay and compete with the likes of the Ford Fiesta S Hatch, the Honda Fit LX and the Nissan versa NV.

Starting with a price of $20,950, the 2017 MINI Hardtop Hatchback is mighty expensive than its rivals. But the higher price is because of a better refined engine, better drive quality and a roomier cabin. The MINI Hardtop uses a 1.5 Liter, inline 3-cylinder engine that offers 6-speed Manual transmission with 134 hp of power and 162 lb-ft of Torque. The Mini offers long distance ride comfort, with a top speed of 206 mph. It does not have a lot of flaws, and easily scores above its rivals in various parameters.

2017 Mini Hardtop 2 Door Engine

8.4/10

The 2017 Mini Hardtop's small footprint, low center of gravity and light weight give it excellent handling characteristics. This is a fun car to drive no matter which engine powers it. Even just zipping around town, it feels playful and engaging, and parking in tight spots is a cinch. Along curvy roads, the Hardtop feels taut and tenacious, clawing for grip with rare enthusiasm. -edmunds

The MINI Hardtop is powered by a 1.5 liter turbocharged inline 3 cylinder Engine which produces 134 hp of power and 162 lb-ft of torque, which provides rear wheel drive with 6-speed Manual transmission as standard. he engine too is peppy enough to provide the thrust. However at higher rpm, it just tends to respond ever so slowly. The starting of this car can be a bit jarring and gives best results when run on gasoline.

The MINI offer a 1.5 liter engine which provides almost equal values of power and torque when compared with the rest. All the other three rivals though have a 1.6 liter engine, which isn't any issue as 100cc just doesn't make much of a difference in such cars.

Acceleration

The MINI is always known for its fast acceleration and this is something where the 2017 Hardtop does not disappoint, and it churns up 0-60 mph in about 6.4 sec, easily the fastest, that too by a mile.

All the other three are no even in the frame with the MINI here with figures north of 9.0 seconds in each case.

The quarter mile department sees a similar result with the MINI getting there first, and all the other three lagging behind by around 2.0 seconds.

Handling and Steering

The Mini is a light weight car having a low centre of gravity, having all the ingredients of great ride quality. The city ride is great and parking in tight spots isn't a problem for this car.The steering is smooth and fun to drive in the city and during the traffic jams. Having said all these, the bigger tires on this Mini Cooper, has made the turning a little harsh.

Braking

Fitted with the brakes to match its acceleration, the hatch takes the last 107 feet to stop, while the others are again around 120 feet. The heavy weight of the car is of no issue to the braking as well.

The quickest to stop amongst the rivals is the Honda Fit at 118 feet, seemingly far off than the MINI. The other two, Ford and Nissan are somewhat similar at around 128 feet.

2017 Mini Hardtop 2 Door Fuel Economy

6.7/10

In terms of fuel efficiency, the Mini gives a mileage of 28 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. With a combined mpg of 32, it does generate excellent figures, easily the best again.

The Nissan is a close second in this regard with 34 mpg combined. The Honda is at 32 mpg ,while the Ford isn't far off from it at 30 mpg. All in all the fuel economy figures are pretty closely knit when compared to the other parameters.

2017 Mini Hardtop 2 Door Interior

Infotainment System

The Mini infotainment system is easy on the eye, and works impeccably. It is easy to use and understand, and contains a Harman Sound system, again something unheard of in a Hatchback of this size.

However, it does have the basic features like:

  • Radio with AM,FM and Satellite
  • Radio with Seek and Scan
  • Aux Audio Input Jack and External Memory Control
  • 8 Speakers
  • Regular Amplifier
  • Concealed Antenna
  • 6 total speakers\tUSB connection

Cargo Volume

This is something where the Mini Engineers needs to work on, big time. The trunk in the Mini is the smallest and that too by a big margin. In terms of practicality though, The trunk of the Mini can easily hold a few duffle bags among others. It has a wide opening with a flat surface, which is good for inserting and removing those heavy bags.

No rival comes near the Mini this parameter, as they all soar way above. The Mini has a trunk volume of 8.7 ft3, with the Ford Focus coming a distant third with a space of 14.9 ft3, closely followed by the Honda with 16.6ft3 of space. The Versa is the best here with a trunk capacity of 18.8 ft3.

2017 Mini Hardtop 2 Door Competition

Mini Hardtop 2 door vs Ford Focus S

The fight between the Mini Cooper and the Ford Focus goes right down to the wire. Both generate almost equal figures in the engine capacity and the fuel economy. The cargo capacity is where the Focus is a clear winner, and rightly so, as it is very near to the best in class. Whereas it is the other way around in the acceleration and braking parameters.

Also, with a better interior comfort and Luxury, the MINI hardtop has to be the deserved winner, even though it is a bit costly.

Mini Hardtop 2 door vs Honda Fit LX

Again, like the Focus, the Fit, despite having a similar engine, manages just about equal figures of power and torque to that of the Mini. It even manages to match the Mini for a few other parameters as well and has a better ground clearance too.

However, with a better fuel economy, acceleration and braking along with comfortable interiors make the MINI the winner again.

Mini Hardtop 2 door vs Nissan Versa Note SV

The Nissan is of no match to the Mini. Despite having a smaller advantage in the engine, it generates almost equal torque and power. The Mini has better pickup, and the braking is better too. Fuel economy is way better too, and so is the acceleration.

The Nissan though, has a better trunk capacity and the passenger volume is just a little bigger. However, the Mini is a clear winner here.

2017 Mini Hardtop 2 Door Final Verdict

The 2017 MINI Hardtop Hatchback is a four seater sport hatchback that can envy many. And quite deservingly, The Mini pips the Nissan and to an extent the Honda Fit under various parameters in this review.

However, its fight is with the Ford Focus. Both these cars go head to head and come out equal in almost all the parameters, with the engine capacity, fuel economy and the pick up being a few, when taken as a whole.. However, while the Mini has the best fuel economy and ground clearance, the ford has more space in the cabin and a bigger trunk.

So, if someone is looking for a stylish four seater with a lot of flamboyance about it, the Mini Hardtop 4 Door Hatchback is the car for him. While a more sensible and value for money pick would be the Ford Focus.
