Detailed Review

The Mini Hardtop is a sporty hatchback in a 4-door configuration, which boasts of unique styling and is also lauded for its performance and practicality. The new model adds a little more standard equipment which is supposed to assist drivers in the vehicle.Being a very accomplished and sporty hatchback, the Mini Cooper offers perky powertrains and is superbly quick on roads.

It starts with a price range of $22,600 and could substantially increase based on which configuration you choose. It is powered by a 1.5-liter engine which produces 134 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque.

Fuel Economy

The quirky interior design of 2018 Mini Hardtop is quite impressive, and the quality of the materials used is superior compared to its class. Its central touchscreen is very user-friendly and the switchgear is well made apart from giving you a solid feel. It also gives you the option to customize as per your needs.

2018 Mini Hardtop 4 Door Features

The Hardtop 4-door is available in only two configurations where the base level Cooper is a bit more economical than its sister Cooper S variant, which boasts its performance ability with its larger engine and standard drive modes. Either way, Mini gives you the option to choose between various colors, adjustable interiors, and driver assist functions.

The standard Cooper is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine coupled with a six-speed manual transmission that drives the front wheels whereas Cooper S adds a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. There are also many standalone options which buyers can choose from, such as Premium package, Sports package, Technology package, John Cooper Works package, and Mini Seven Edition package.

2018 Mini Hardtop 4 Door Engine

The Mini Cooper Hardtop 4-door hatchback is equipped with an 134hp 1.5-liter turbocharged engine which powers the front wheels. A standard 6-speed manual or available 6-speed automatic transmission are on offer. Performance levels and handling dynamics are good for the class as is the fuel economy -carbuzz

Both Cooper and Cooper S offers 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines respectively. It gives the base car 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while the S trim churns out 189 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Both of these variants have been coupled with six-speed manual transmission and there is also an optional six-speed automatic.

Even with its weight and four doors, the Cooper still has nimble handling and doesn't affect its performance. Same is the case with Fiat 500 L, which may lean on the heavier side, but is held strong by a powerful engine doesn't let the performance suffer.

The 2018 Mini Cooper S is able to gain 60 mph in 7.7 seconds, which is just about equal to that of VW GTI and probably a bit quicker than the Ford Focus ST. The optional six-speed automatic works hard to keep the car in the powerband in order to eliminate turbo lag and torque steer.

Almost all of Mini Cooper's rivals are in the same ballpark when it comes to acceleration. There's just a hairline of difference between their ability to run from zero to sixty mph. For instance, both Ford Focus SE Hatchback and Honda Civic Hatchback take almost same time to accelerate from 0-60 mph.

Ride and Handling

Having a longer wheelbase helps Mini Cooper provide good ride quality and improved engine refinement also adds to the comfort. The suspension is tuned to soak lighter bumps, although heavier bumps seep into the cabin.

It's steering is very responsive and there is ample feedback from the wheels. The tires keep the car glued to the road thereby encouraging spirited driving and would allow you to explore the car's potential. Body rolls and mid-corner bumps are barely noticeable making it one of the best cars to drive out there.

2018 Mini Cooper doesn't shed speed with much urgency and has poor panic braking performance. After heavy use, the pedals tend to go soft, though it was controllable and remained composed throughout. It took the Cooper 116 feet to come to a stop from 60 mph, which is quite average for a small hatchback.

The Honda Civic Hatchback posts nearly the same time as the Mini, taking 115 feet to come to a from 60 mph. The Fiat 500L and the Ford Focus Hatchback are just a little behind, though not by much.

2018 Mini Hardtop 4 Door Fuel Economy

The Mini Cooper is just as frugal as other small sized cars, perhaps even a little more. The base Cooper, with a 3-cylinder engine, is rated at 28 mpg in city and 37 on the highway, bringing the combined efficiency to an impressive 32 mpg. The mileage of Cooper S is not as good, with manual transmission managing 26 mpg overall and the automatic transmission gets to 29 mpg overall.

MPG (city) 28 22 26 29
MPG (highway) 37 30 38 38
MPG (combined) 32 26 31 33

The Fiat is the least efficient of this bunch, only managing an average figure of only 26 mpg. The Ford and the Honda are in the same ballpark as the Mini, running upwards of 30 miles per gallon overall.

2018 Mini Hardtop 4 Door Interior

"The big center display has the 6.5-inch infotainment screen, and below it are toggles and switches that look retro, but control modern functions. The front seats are thankfully one area where Mini has left things modern, and these comfy chairs are complemented by clever packaging and even an available head-up display on the windshield."- KelleyBlueBook

Seating and Comfort

Mini Hardtop Cooper can easily accommodate 5 average sized passengers and its optional sports seats are very comfortable and supportive. There's a generous amount of cushioning and is contoured well enough for longer rides. The front seats have plenty of legroom and headroom which makes the driver comfortable while riding the vehicle, but the rear seats are a little cramped.

37.5/49.6/32.3 38.7/54.6/36.7 37.9/53.7/33.2 37.4/55.0/36.0

The cars in this segment usually offer a good amount of space for the front passengers, although the rear passengers have to compromise a little, especially for the legroom. The Fiat 500l and the Civic have a little more space than the rest, although it still isn't that good.

Infotainment System

The 4-door Cooper S is equipped with quite a number of basic infotainment features which serves the passengers with a very user-friendly 6.5-inch display with a smartphone and Bluetooth integration, parking assistant among others. Here's a list of both standard and premium infotainment features available with the car: -

  • 6.5-inch display
  • 6-speaker audio system
  • Bluetooth
  • Smartphone integration
  • AUX
  • Climate Control

Cargo Capacity

With its 4-door system, Mini has tried to improve its practicality and surely has managed to offer an acceptable, if not generous, trunk space. With its split folding rear seats, it manages to offer 40.7 cubic feet of trunk space which is the best that it can offer you. It tries to impress you with its club man models which give 47.9 cubic feet to store your items.

With 68 cubic feet of storage capacity, Fiat 500L walks the talk as it has the maximum cargo space in this segment. Ford Focus SE Hatchback and Honda Civic Hatchback though a tad bit better than Mini Cooper in terms of the amount of space provided with folded seats, still trail behind Fiat.

Dimensions and Weight

The Mini Cooper looks quite good with its long nose which has been recently redesigned and is quite noticeable. Apart from that, the taillights have been given a square design, while other specifics of Mini remains the same: oval lights on the front fenders, upright windshield, and an oblong grille.

The dimensions of the Mini are quite compact and weaving to and fro is quite easy even in heavy traffic. The ground clearance is good for this segment, and the car can navigate through some pretty bumpy roads as well.

Even with 4 Door's added size and weight, its handling remains sharp and Nimble just like Honda Civic Hatchback. However, you may notice a bit snaggy performance while driving the Fiat 500L because of its enormous size especially while taking sharp turns and driving on unfriendly terrains.

2018 Mini Hardtop 4 Door Competition

Mini Hardtop 4 Door Hatchback vs. Fiat 500L

Fiat 500L, even with its small posture of being a Hatchback, offers large and spacious cargo space which is more than sufficient for everyday use. Its optional touchscreen interface is not only attractive but also very easy to use. Tall passengers can also fit in and find the car comfortable.

Nonetheless, Fiat 500L is a tad bit slower than many other cars in its class and its touchy brakes can sometimes give you a hard time to bring the vehicle to a smooth stop. The ride quality also deteriorates when the car faces difficult terrains. Its adaptive suspension and sporty steering help maintain ride quality even over bumps.

Mini Hardtop 4 Door Hatchback vs. Ford Focus SE hatcback

Buyers are given the option to upgrade with lots of upscale and high-tech options. It is very potent to manage noise cancellation to its fullest even on highways.

However, on the downside, most of its advanced driver safety aids are solely available with the Titanium trim. While Mini has upgraded its two-door systems with four, Ford Focus Hatchback still hangs on to its traditional model which tends to have tight back seats.

Mini Hardtop 4 Door hatchback vs. Honda Civic Hatch

With its turbocharged engines, Honda Civic Hatchback boasts of excellent fuel economy and relatively high performance. It's ride quality superbly balances both the athletic feel and comfort level. Just like the Mini Hardtop Hatchback, it is available with many advanced technologies and safety features. The interiors are built from high-quality materials, and it also has a spacious cabin.

However, the Civic doesn't fare well when it comes to adaptive cruise control system as it becomes very slow sometimes. Its forward collision warning system can get on your nerves as it's over-vigilant, and even the touchscreen interface is slow and confusing.

2018 Mini Hardtop 4 Door Final Verdict

The latest 2018 variant has seen Mini ditch its traditional two-door, short-roof proportions and replaced it with a longer, four-door profile. The result is an improved practicality level by using larger rear seats and increased cargo volume. It is designed keeping in mind the fan base among the buyers who look for usual Mini traits; engaging handling and better performance added with more tinge of practicality.
