Mini Coopers have always been highly customizable cars that are extremely fun to drive around and came with a higher price tag compared to the rivals in the segment. The new Mini Hardtop 4-Door comes as a carryover model with some major changes inside out. The front grille, as well as the rear-end, has been redesigned with an updated look. There are also new color options along with new roof colors to choose from. The powertrain of the Mini remains the same and there are both manual and automatic transmission options available.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The engine under the hood is a 1.5 L three-cylinder turbocharged engine coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard whereas a 7-speed DCT is also an available option in the higher trims. For 2022 the Cooper 4-Door gains the larger 8.8-inch touchscreen unit as standard along with Lane Departure Warning which is also a standard feature now. Android Auto is still not available which is a bummer. The 2022 Mini Cooper 4-Door competes with the Volkswagen Golf, Hyundai Veloster, and the Subaru Impreza Hatchback

The 2022 Mini Hardtop 4-Door comes in three trim lines namely Classic, Signature, and Iconic. All trims are equipped with the same powertrain consisting of a 1.5 L Inline-3 engine. The standard transmission in all trims is a 6-speed manual gearbox, whereas a 7-speed DCT is optional in the mid and high-level trims. The base Classic trim comes with a basic set of features at a reasonable price. The Signature trim adds more color options along with larger wheels, a moonroof, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The Iconic trim is the extreme end of the feature list and comes with the most luxurious interior.

The available packages include a Premium Package which can be equipped in the mid-level Signature trim for a price of $1,250 and comes with an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Heated Steering Wheel, and a Harman/Kardon Premium Sound System. The Signature and Iconic trims could also be equipped with the Driver Assistance Package which comes with Active Cruise Control and Parking Assistant feature. The following table shows the detailed feature list of each trim of the Mini 4-Door along with their starting prices-

We Recommend

The mid-spec Signature trim with the desired transmission option would be the ideal choice in the 2022 Mini 4-Door lineup. It comes with a great set of extra features and customization options over the base trim while also being much cheaper than the top-end trim. The Signature trim also could be equipped with some packages which are not available for the base trim. For enthusiasts who need, even more, zippier performance along with more power, the higher-end Cooper S model in the same Signature trim would be the best option.

The 2022 Mini Cooper has already begun production and you can get one according to your preference in the nearest dealership or through the Mini website.

Engine and Performance

The 2022 Mini Cooper Hardtop 4-Door comes with a TwinPower Turbo, 1.5-liter, inline 3-cylinder direct-injection engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard. This is the only engine option while the Signature and Iconic trims could also be equipped with a 7-speed DCT transmission. This engine is underpowered compared to other rivals in the segment as well as the higher-powered Mini Cooper S with the four-pot engine under the hood.

The manual transmission is smooth and fun to drive while the optional 7-speed is also a great option. The Mini even though has a lower-powered engine in this model still performs pretty well in terms of speed and power output. The Mini Hardtop 4-Door can reach a speed of 60mph in just 7.9 seconds which is still a great time in the segment. But for a better response from the engine as well as an overall more engaging driving experience it is recommended to choose the higher Cooper S model.

2022 Mini Hardtop 4 Door Hatchback driving view

The handling of this Mini is as expected and it is bliss to drive, whether it be in straight lines or through the twisties. The hatch can attack corners aggressively while being stable and enjoyable to drive. The ride quality is also good when equipped with the 16-inch wheels whereas the larger wheels would make the ride stiffer. Overall the Mini Hardtop 4-Door is a great performer in the engine and handling department although on paper it seems underpowered.

We have taken the base models of all hatches in this segment for comparison. Among them, the Subaru Impreza which is the least expensive also happens to be the most powerful. The Golf and the Veloster follow with an identical power output while the Mini remains at the last position. However, everything flips when it comes to on-road performance. The Golf is the fastest while the so-called underpowered Mini can reach the same speed at a very similar pace. The most powerful Subaru however, gets limited by its CVT transmission making it the slowest.

Fuel Economy

The 2022 Mini Hardtop 4-Door comes with an impressively fuel-efficient engine delivering good efficiency figures in all conditions. The Mini Hardtop 4-Door delivers fuel efficiency of 27 mpg in the city, 37 on the highway, and a combined efficiency of 31mpg. The Mini, however, has a relatively lower fuel capacity of 11.6 gallons. This means that the Mini provides a slightly lower range of 313 miles in the city, 429 on the highway, and a combined range of 359 miles. Overall, the Mini Hardtop performed well in the fuel economy sector.

The 2021 Golf which is the fastest is also the most efficient among these hatches. The Mini is just behind the Gold in terms of fuel economy. The Hyundai also performs pretty well providing good efficiency figures. Whereas, the Impreza which is the slowest, also happens to be the least efficient. All hatches we compare, except the Mini come with an identical fuel capacity of 13.2 gallons which means that the most efficient Golf also provides the longest combined range.

The Mini 4-Door Hardtop does provide some extra space over the 2-Door version of Mini but still is not as spacious as the rivals in the segment. The seats as standard come covered in a Black leatherette upholstery while the top end Iconic trim comes with a selection of premium leather upholstery including Chesterfield Leather Malt Brown, Satellite Grey, and Leather Cross Punch Carbon Black. The users can also further opt for the MINI Yours Leather Lounge Carbon Black which is a paid upholstery option.

The interior comes in a standard Hazy Grey trim as standard while there are also different trim options including Piano Black, Aluminum, and Silver Chequered. The seats are comfortable and spacious and won’t tire you during long journeys. The second row is not very cramped and is not intended for children, but adults in the rear would feel uncomfortable after some time. The cargo area in the Mini is also a cramped 13.1 cu-ft which is enough for short rides, but can’t hold a lot of luggage during long trips.

Cargo Capacity

The Impreza hatchback is the most spacious in terms of passenger space as well as cargo capacity. The Volkswagen Golf and the Veloster are also more spacious than the Mini while the Mini remains the least spacious. Based on interior quality and luxury, the Mini is definitely the best. The Mini is also the most customizable and comes with the most leather and trim options. The following are some of the most important interior features of the 2022 Mini hardtop 4-Door-

  • Multifunction leather-wrapped sport steering wheel
  • Six-way manually adjustable driver and front passenger seats
  • 60/40 split-folding rear seatback
  • Heated Front seats
  • Heated Nappa Leather Steering Wheel
  • Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control
  • Ambient Lighting

How intuitive is the 2022 Mini Hardtop 4-Door’s infotainment unit?

The 2022 Mini Hardtop models now come standard with the 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit which used to be an optional feature till this year. The touchscreen unit is intuitive and responsive with an easy-to-understand user interface. An audio system is a 6-speaker unit in the base trim while the top-end trim features a 12-speaker Harman Kardon Premium sound system outputting 360-watts. This sound system includes 5 tweeters, 5 midrange speakers, and 2 central bass speakers located under the front seats. The following are some of the main infotainment features-

  • 8.8" touchscreen with connected media including remote and connected service
  • MINI central instrument with LED ring
  • Six speaker audio system with AM/FM tuners, HD radio, and SiriusXM satellite radio with a 12-month subscription
  • Bluetooth connectivity for telephone and audio streaming
  • Multifunctional digital instrument display
  • MINI Heads Up Display

The basic design language remains the same as expected. It still looks like a typical Mini with the same round and sporty design. However, the front and the rear end have been redesigned mildly. The changes are not evident in the first look, but upon a closer look, the changes can be seen and they are still good looking and mostly similar. The Mini Hardtop 4-door version comes in 8 distinct color options along with 4 roof color options and a total of 9 alloy wheel options.

With or without major exterior changes and revisions, the 2022 Mini Hardtop still looks beautiful and those who love Minis would just adore this one too. The Hardtop 4-Door can also be customized according to the user’s likes with different styles of bonnet stripes. The 2022 Mini looks planted and sporty with a design that is wider to the lower portion when looked at from any angle. This design while also making it look impressive also improves the aerodynamics of the Mini.

The 2022 Mini Hardtop 4-Door is one of the best-looking hatchbacks in the segment. But it doesn’t have a huge edge over the rivals as the Impreza and the Veloster are good-looking. The Golf is a machine with a huge fanbase, but we can’t deny the fact that the non-GTI, non-R, base Golf models are somewhat dull-looking in their stock condition. The Mini is also the most practical one and comes with 5.7 inches of ground clearance. The Subaru Impreza is the longest while the Mini is significantly wider than all of the competition. The following are some of the most important exterior features of the Mini Hardtop 4-Door-

  • 15" alloy wheels (Classic)
  • 16" alloy wheels (Signature)
  • Choice of 16" or 17" wheels (Iconic)
  • All-season run-flat tires
  • Union Jack Taillights
  • Redesigned front and back grilles
  • Standard LED headlights with cornering lights

The 2022 Mini Hardtop 4-Door is equipped with a set of high-tech safety features that keep its occupants safe in all conditions. There are also many driver assistance features in the Mini Hardtop as standard which provides an easier driving experience while keeping an eye on the vehicle’s total functioning. The standard features in the Mini 4-Door Hardtop include Active Driving Assistant with Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning along with Pedestrian and Front Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation. The following are some other important safety features in the 2022 Mini Hardtop-

  • Automatic modes for headlights and rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • LED headlights with bad weather lights and LED Union Jack taillights
  • Tire-Pressure Monitoring System
  • Active Cruise Control
  • Parking Assistant
  • Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) incl. DTC + EDLC

2022 Mini Hardtop 4-Door vs 2022 Volkswagen Golf

The Volkswagen Golf is a capable performer and always has been a choice loved by people in the segment. It is a powerful and capable contender that also is faster than the Mini. The Golf is also priced lower than the Mini and handles very well which the Mini also does. The Mini, however, is the more luxurious car with a lot of customization options on offer. The mini also handles a little better than the Golf. Overall both of these cars are superb options, but unless you need a car that is unique to your preferences, the Golf would be the better choice for the price paid.

2022 Volkswagen Golf

2022 Mini Hardtop 4-Door vs 2022 Hyundai Veloster

The Hyundai Veloster has a starting price that is significantly lower than the Mini Hardtop 4-Door version. It is a powerful and well-handling machine of course, but the thing is the Veloster is a 2-Door hatch with a second row. The second row is more spacious than the Mini, but getting in and out of the rear row would be harder due to the lack of rear doors. Overall, the Mini comes with slightly better performance and a more engaging driving experience. It also comes with a more unique look and a better-looking interior making it a better choice than the Hyundai.

2022 Hyundai Veloster

2022 Mini Hardtop 4-Door vs 2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback

The Subaru Impreza has a powerful engine mated to a CVT transmission that is not able to effectively transfer all that power to the wheels. However, the interior space of the Impreza is superior and beats any hatch in this segment. It has a super spacious interior with a lot of space offered in both rows and ample cargo space. The Mini is the more engaging to drive machine which while being lesser-powered than the Subaru, makes use of the power it produces effectively. It is also the one with a higher-quality interior and a more elegant cabin. The Mini also provides a higher fuel economy making it the better choice.

2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback

Final Verdict

The new Mini Hardtop 4-Door is an extremely capable machine offered at different levels of luxury according to the needs of the customers. It comes with a capable powertrain under the hood along with an interior that is luxurious considering the segment. The Mini is a great option for an enthusiast as it has always been. It handles impressively and tackles corners with all the grace and glory. However, even while being a 4-door hatch, the Mini has limitations on the inside as the space on offer, especially in the second row is quite low. The cargo space is also low whereas the interior quality is great. Overall, the Mini Hardtop 4-Door is a Mini with more space, but with sporty handling and an engaging driving experience. It is a superb choice for someone who can afford it at least in the mid-spec Signature trim.
