Mini Cooper has a rich cultural heritage. The Classic Mini started its life as tuner car with a differently tuned engine, bigger brakes and flashy paint job. Now with the modern hatchback, the manufacturers have made no compromises. The quality of materials in the dashboard, seats, doors is simply topnotch. The Mini Cooper 4dr is offered with a Front Wheel Drive (FWD) configuration.

The Mini Cooper competes against the Fiat 500, Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Honda Civic Hatchback. Being a very accomplished and sporty hatchback, the Mini Cooper offers perky powertrains and is superbly quick on roads. It starts with a price range of $22,900 and could substantially increase based on which configuration you choose.

7.0/10

2019 Mini Cooper Hardtop 4 Door is available in only two configurations. The base Cooper has been placed as strategic entry point into the Mini lineup. This trim is more reasonably priced but it offers a three-cylinder engine. The Cooper S trim boasts of its performance ability with its larger 2.0-liter engine. Either way, Mini gives you the option to choose between various colors, adjustable interiors, and driver assist functions.

We Recommend

If you are on a budget you can select the base variant which is quite peppy with its turbocharged three-cylinder engine. If the car enthusiast in you carves for performance then you can surely opt for the Cooper S trim.

2019 Mini Hardtop 4 Door Engine

Engine and Performance

The Cooper S reached 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, which is about equal to the VW GTI and slightly quicker than the Ford Focus ST. The optional six-speed automatic shifts quickly and smoothly, and there's no sign of turbo lag or torque steer.-Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

Both Cooper and Cooper S offers 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines respectively. The former produces 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while the latter churns out 189 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Transmission duties are taken care by a six-speed manual transmission and there is also an optional automatic.

One of the specialties of this engine is its peak torque delivery. The engine builds up torque immediately and holds it steadily. Peak torque comes in at a mere 1250 rpm, which is much earlier than the competition. So, driving the Mini Cooper is a lot easier in city traffic.

Even with its weight and four doors, the Cooper still has nimble handling and doesn't affect its performance. Same is the case with Fiat 500 L, which may lean on the heavier side, but is held strong by a powerful engine doesn't let the performance suffer.

Acceleration

The 2019 Mini Cooper S is able to gain 60 mph in 7.7 seconds which is below average. If you want to make the most out of the time behind the wheel, get the stick shift. The optional six-speed automatic does a good job but it fails to be as engaging as the manual transmission.

A Mini Cooper shouldn't be evaluated for its straight-line acceleration only. It would be unfair to judge a Mini only for its straight-line acceleration. The Mini Cooper hatchback really shines while carving corners.

Almost all of Mini Cooper's rivals are in the same ballpark when it comes to acceleration. There's just a hairline of difference between their ability to run from zero to sixty mph. accelerate from 0-60 mph.

Ride and Handling

Mini Cooper has a wide go-kart like stance that improves its handling. Having a longer wheelbase helps Mini Cooper provide good ride quality and improved engine refinement also adds to the comfort. The suspension is tuned to soak lighter bumps, although heavier bumps seep into the cabin.

The steering setup is price and its offers ample feedback from the front wheels. The tires keep the car glued to the road thereby encouraging spirited driving and would allow you to explore the car's potential.

The Mini Cooper has great driving dynamics but if you pin the throttle a little too hard, then be prepared for a harsh ride. For a better ride, it is advisable to stick with the smaller 17-inch wheels.

Braking

2019 Mini Cooper doesn't shed speed with much urgency and has average braking performance. During emergency braking test, the Mini Cooper travelled 116 feet before coming to a halt from 60 mph.

2019 Mini Hardtop 4 Door Interior

7.5/10

The front seats are comfortable and well-cushioned, but the back seats are tight, especially in convertible and two-door Minis. Taller occupants can comfortably fit in the back of four-door models for short trips. The short doors make it easy to enter or exit the front of this car, but it's trickier to get into the back.-Cars.USnews

Seating and Comfort

Mini Hardtop Cooper can easily accommodate 5 average sized passengers but it is better suited for 4 people. There's a generous amount of cushioning and is contoured well enough for longer rides. The front seats have plenty of legroom and headroom which makes the driver comfortable while riding the vehicle, but the rear seats are a little cramped.

The cars in this segment usually offer a good amount of space for the front passengers, although the rear passengers have to compromise a little, especially for the legroom. The Fiat 500l and the Civic have a little more space than the competition.

Infotainment

The 4-door Cooper S is equipped with quite a number of basic infotainment features which serves the passengers with a very user-friendly 6.5-inch display with a smartphone and Bluetooth integration, parking assistant among others.

The display and the buttons are housed in a round panel in the center of the dashboard. The system is inspired by the BMW's iDrive infotainment system. Mini Cooper offers 2 screen sizes for the display: 6.5 (standard) or 8.8 (optional). The infotainment system can be controlled by a knob behind the shifter.

Cargo Capacity

By adding 4 doors and stretching the wheelbase, Mini has tried to improve its practicality. No it hasn't made the rear cargo space generous. But with its split folding rear seats, it manages to offer 40.7 cubic feet of trunk space.

2019 Mini Hardtop 4 Door Exterior

Even after all these years, the Mini still looks great; it's a superb example of a design team successfully rising to the challenge of properly updating an automotive icon (the original Mini). We like the car's low and wide stance, which helps with the handling.-KelleyBlueBook

Dimensions and Weight

The Mini Cooper is renowned for its styling. The design which was iconic back when it was introduced. Even after so 6 decades the current generation uses a similar design. The Cooper hatchback looks quite good with its long nose. Apart from that, the taillights have been given a square design, while other specifics of Mini remains the same: oval lights on the front fenders, upright windshield, and an oblong grille.

Dimensionally, the Mini is a compact car. Often the figures are on the lowest side. Essentially it makes way for a cabin which is more suited to front passengers only. If you are looking for more space then the Honda Civic has the biggest dimensions in this segment.

The dimensions of the Mini are quite compact and weaving to and fro is quite easy even in heavy traffic. The ground clearance is good for this segment, and the car can navigate through some pretty bumpy roads as well.

Even in 4-door guise,, its handling remains sharp and Nimble just like Honda Civic Hatchback. However, you may notice a bit snaggy performance while driving the Fiat 500L because of its enormous size especially while taking sharp turns and driving on unfriendly terrains.

2019 Mini Hardtop 4 Door Competition

Mini Cooper vs Fiat 500L

Fiat 500L, even with its small posture of being a Hatchback, offers large and spacious cargo space which is more than sufficient for everyday use. Its optional touchscreen interface is not only attractive but also very easy to use. Tall passengers can also fit in and find the car comfortable.

Nonetheless, Fiat 500L is a tad bit slower than many other cars in its class and its touchy brakes can sometimes give you a hard time to bring the vehicle to a smooth stop. The ride quality also deteriorates when the car faces difficult terrains.

Mini Cooper vs Honda Civic Hatchback

With its turbocharged engines, Honda Civic offers great fuel economy and relatively high performance. Honda engineers have tuned the suspension to superbly balances both the athletic feel and comfort level. Just like the Mini Hardtop Hatchback, it is available with a galore of tech and safety features. The interiors are built from high-quality materials, and it also has a spacious cabin.

Civic has its share of flaws. Its forward collision warning system can get on your nerves as it's over-vigilant, and even the touchscreen interface is slow and confusing. Civic isn't suited for spirited driving.

2019 Mini Hardtop 4 Door Final Verdict

The quality of materials in the dashboard, seats, doors is simply topnotch. Surely, there are a few downsides with the Mini Cooper hatchback. The sport suspension is good for cornering but it seriously hampers the ride quality.

If you are someone who prioritises ride comfort and utility, then Honda Civic is a much better option for you. Civic is cheaper than Mini, offers better cabin space and still doesn't compromise on performance by much.

The 2019 Mini Cooper comes with the added benefits of four-door profile. As a result, it offers more utility. But it hasn't strayed away from its roots; performance, engaging handling and distinct looks.
