The SUV segment is an overcrowded market, with plenty of vehicles for the family-conscious population. The Outlander is one of Mitsubishi’s entries in the crossover segment. The Outlander is the more fresh-looking vehicle among the maker’s lineup even after 7 years since its redesign. With a new redesign for the 2014 model, the Outlander with its sporty looks, spaciousness, and impressive maneuverability is not too far off in terms of the looks.

We Recommend

Since the price difference is just $5000 between the base and the top-end model, going for the GT trim is not a bad idea. With a few more fancy features being offered the extra price makes a bit of sense and is not stupid. However, if you are on a budget and do not want to spend more than 25 grand then the SE trim works really well too.

2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The 2014 Outlander is offered in two different engine configurations and the two different engines give the car different driving characters. The base engine on offer is a 1.6L Inline-4 that churns out 166hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. There is an option to upgrade to the bigger and powerful 3.0L V6 engine that is standard on the GT trim. This engine puts out 224hp and with a standard 4WD drivetrain. The powerful engine is also available as an option with the midrange SE trim for a price of $23,795.

The Outlander isn’t the most powerful car here. With 173 hp and 166 lb-ft torque on offer, the Dodge Journey is really an impressive SUV. The Outlander, in theory, is down on power and that simply translates to less performance but on the contrary, the Outlander proves itself to be faster in terms of the 0-60mph acceleration and the quarter-mile run.

2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Fuel Economy

6.0/10

The Outlander does not fail to impress with its mileage figures. The lower power output helps pay dividends in this regard. If a good SUV with average interior space and good fuel efficiency is what you are looking for then the Outlander is the best choice. A car with higher fuel efficiency also means cheaper fuel bills in the long term. The SUV returns 25 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and combined mileage of 28 mpg.

As an individual car, it is really good in terms of mileage but pits it against competition and the Mazda CX-5 manages to do better with 26 mpg in the cities, 35 mpg in the highways, and combined mileage of 30 mpg. The Dodge has the least efficient engine in terms of fuel efficiency.

2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Interior

7.0/10

The front seats are a comfortable place to be in, but the second row feels more spacious when compared. The third row is a bit constrained and lacks space. The interior is set up with a bit of soft-touch vinyl bits and is much more improved and better when compared to its previous generations. There are many other features offered in the interior as well.

The Mitsubishi Outlander comes with seating for 7, the competition offers seating only for 5. However, when it comes to interior dimensions, they are very similarly matched to each other. All the cars are spacious and do not seem cramped dimensionally. Although, it is worth mentioning that the Dodge has the most legroom in the first as well as the second row. Other interior features include:

  • Automatic climate control
  • Steering-wheel-mounted audio
  • Keyless Entry
  • Cloth Seats
  • Additional Rear Seat
  • Pass-Through Rear Seat
  • 2nd Row Bench Seat
  • Bucket Seats

How intuitive is the 2012 Nissan GT-R’s infotainment unit?

The 2014 Outlander does not come with the best infotainment unit in the market. It is difficult to use the navigation system when compared to that of its rivals. Irrespective of this issue, it gets a 7-inch touch screen along with many optional and standard features to ensure the best infotainment experience. Other infotainment features include:

  • Rockford Fosgate system
  • Navigation system
  • Rear-seat DVD player
  • Satellite Radio & HD Radio
  • Bluetooth
  • Voice recognition,
  • USB port

2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Exterior

8.0/10

The Outlander holds the Mitsubishi branding on its grille in a simple style. This SUV does not have the traditional tough looks of an SUV and looks more beautiful than Macho. The car comes with 16-inch steel wheels as standard along with an upgradable 18-inch wheel option in the higher trims. You get the sunroof as an optional feature along with rain-sensing wipers and a bunch of other tech gizmos.

2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Final Verdict

The Mitsubishi Outlander is a good car that offers a comfortable drive for affordable pricing, the car is pretty different from the traditional SUVs in terms of looks and might be a good deal. However, this car is not known for having the best safety and reliability ratings and thanks to the car’s rarity getting spares for the car is quite a struggle and time-consuming process.
