The Outlander has been one of Mitsubishi’s longest-standing warriors in the brand’s quest for glory. The Outlander, since its inception, has been a very competitive and sturdy SUV that has stuck well to its Japanese roots. Although its 2022 model year is different. In fact, it is totally different; the design is completely revamped and the vehicle is completely re-designed. This upcoming version of the Outlander is expected to compete with its rivals not just in terms of performance and sturdiness, but also in terms of its design, exterior, and interior. The SUV is in the highly competitive compact-crossover class which has forced Mitsubishi to revise its prices to stand a chance in terms of sales.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Also, Mitsubishi has increased the number of trim levels for 2022 and a PHEV variant is also slated to be included in the line-up. The new Outlander has got a funky yet beautiful styling on the exterior, especially in the front, and a clean and subtle but super sharp detailing on the rear. Also, the interior is super impressive and does not fail to impress. Mitsubishi has built the Outlander based on the Nissan platform and has adopted Rogue’s Powertrain and various other bits. Overall, from a layman’s perspective, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander has got a flawless design, extensive styling, super-cool interior, Intelligent features, 3-row seating space, and other cool bits. Coming to its competitors, this SUV directly competes with the likes of Volkswagen Tiguan, Honda CRV, and Toyota RAV4.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Features

As we mentioned above, the trim levels of the Outlander will be sold across a revised trim lineup, starting with the base ES, going up to the SEL. Mitsubishi decided to drop the LE, SP, and the exciting GT trim from the lineup as part of their redesign, which involves a revised front fascia and an all-new chassis.

We Recommend

Mitsubishi has spruced up the Outlander for 2022 with a seemingly never-ending list of features, and we must say, it is extremely well-equipped from the SE trim onwards. The SEL trim offers too much at a great cost, and if the Outlander is an option taking up some space in your mind, then you should jump at a chance to get the SEL Launch Edition while it is still available. After the Launch Edition goes out of stock, the SEL trim would be the next best option considering the conveniences it has to offer.

Price

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander prices are expected to increase just a bit, with the ES variant starting at $25,795, going up to over $31,945 for the SEL trim, and it remains unknown whether Mitsubishi will continue to sell the GT trim or bring it back in the future. AWD remains an add-on at $2,000 for every variant including the SEL. The Launch Editions are touted to offer the more premium features at attractive introductory prices and get AWD as well.

Release Date

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander will be on sale starting from April 2021.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Engine and Performance

There is a single 2.5L engine option available for all the trims of the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander as opposed to the PHEV 2.4 L engine on the 2021 spec. The engine is quite strong and generates 181 horses with 181 pound-feet of torque. This engine is pretty new and is borrowed from the Nissan Rogue. Since there are no electric motors attached to this one, the power offered is significantly less than what was offered on the previous generation, 2021 Outlander. However, it does not affect the performance by a large margin. The gearbox on the vehicle is a CVT and although Front-wheel drive is standard across all trims, All-wheel drive is also available as an option.

The acceleration is not as brisk as it is on other competitors and lacks the feel. On the other hand, the vehicle is extremely nimble and fruitful. The handling is extremely good and dynamically the vehicle is as stable as it could get. The steering is perfectly weighted and is quite responsive. The steering ratio is very quick at just 2.6 turns to lock to lock making it quite precise.

Acceleration of the vehicle, as mentioned earlier, is lazy and might make the SUV feel boring on expressways. 0-60 mph takes a row laggy 8.2 seconds and it takes around 16.3 seconds to complete a quarter-mile. To put that into perspective, the Honda is capable of a sub 8 second 0 to 60.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Fuel Economy

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander gives an EPA-estimated mileage of around 24 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway in FWD config. In AWD config, it returns an estimated mileage of around 24 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway.

These figures are staggeringly lesser than the figures of the Rogue with which the Outlander shares its platform. Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 offer the best fuel economy in the segment.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Interior

The interior of the 2022 Outlander is beautifully laid out. Overall, the Interior looks elegant and subtle. Since this is a new generation, there have been ample changes. The color schemes, materials, design flow, and technologies used have all changed drastically. The overall build of the interior is very classy and at the same time very sleek and flowy. You will not find anything out of place anywhere.

At first glance, the dash, door panels, seats all look and feel very comfortable and luxurious. The dashboard is very well laid out with minimal use of hard plastics and a proper button layout. The materials used look and feel very rich and premium. High-grade soft touch rubbers and plastics in dual-tone color schemes increase the richness of the cabin.

Leatherette is used on the seats as well. The buttons and controls offered on the dash are very easy to access and have simple operations. The second row of seats is spacious and can easily accommodate 3 adults. However, the third row is practically unusable and super-cramped. The headroom has increased; courtesy of the increase in height of the vehicle.

The interior on the previous-gen Outlander had some annoying bits on it and the materials used were not at par for the price paid. But now Mitsubishi has made sure it offers best-in-class features with superior comfort. The cargo capacity of the new Outlander has increased by a cubic foot. Also, the height of the loading lip has been brought down which would make it easier to load and unload luggage. Highlights of the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander interior:

  • Semi-aniline premium leather-appointed seating (optional)
  • Heated steering wheel (optional)
  • Leather-appointed seating and wrapped steering wheel and shift knob
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Heated front seats
  • Heated rear seats

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Exterior

The exterior of the 2022 Outlander is quite phenomenal as far as the looks are concerned. The platform on which this compact crossover SUV is based is shared with the Nissan Rogue, but in terms of design, this vehicle is bespoke. The road presence that this vehicle can garner is undoubtedly amazing.

A quick glance at this vehicle will tell you that it is a machine right out of those sci-fi flicks. Just like the interior, the exterior has also undergone massive changes. The hood design has also changed from a curvier circular-looking hood opening to a sharper, quadrilateral type opening.

The 2022 Outlander is the lengthiest and widest car among the competition but it has a shorter wheelbase which affects the interior space. The Volkswagen Tiguan is the heaviest among the comparison, and also boasts the longest wheelbase which translates into the only usable 3rd row of seating in the competition. Other exterior highlights include:

  • Sharp cuts and creases starting right from the front fenders to the rear headlights ooze a strong appeal to the vehicle
  • Sharp lines make the vehicle look smarter
  • The front grille has been broadened and widened, but the use of chrome has been limited in order to avoid an overdressed grille
  • Front LED DRL and headlights look quite premium

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Safety

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is loaded with a plethora of safety features. It comes with the new Advanced Driver Assistance System technology (ADAS) used by Mitsubishi in its new-gen vehicles. The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander has secured overall 4 stars in the safety rating test conducted by NHTSA and GOOD ratings in the IIHS test.

However, these ratings cannot be carried over to the 2022 model since the 2022 model is a completely revamped, new generation Outlander. Other safety features include Trailer Stability Assist System, Electronic Stability control system, 11 Airbags as standard. These features include:-

  • Active blind spot assist (ABSA)
  • Rear Automatic Emergency Braking (Rear AEB)
  • Blindspot Warning (BSW)
  • Forward Collision Mitigation with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Keep Assist (LKA)
  • Lane Departure Prevention (LDP)
  • Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR)
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Traffic Jam Assist
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA)

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Competition

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander vs 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander has got a more sturdy exterior stance than the Volkswagen Tiguan. The interior on the Tiguan looks premium but lacks in appeal and is available in a single tone, whereas the interior on the Outlander not just looks premium, but feels extremely subtle and classy and is available in dual-tone options.

In terms of engines, the VW packs up a smaller capacity engine, but since it is Turbocharged, it can generate more power and torque than the hefty but slow engine of the Outlander. In terms of space in the second row, Outlander surpasses the Tiguan. However, the third row in the Tiguan is a bit more accessible than the former. Also, in terms of dimensions, the Outlander is bigger than the Tiguan.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander vs 2022 Honda CR-V

Since there is no solid update on the 2022 Honda CR-V yet, we shall consider the 2021 spec of the CR-V and compare it with the 2022 Outlander. The CR-V has been leading all the charts for a pretty long period now and is a very dominating car in terms of its engine, reliability, and practicality.

For 2022, the design of the Outlander is undoubtedly way better than that of the CR-V. It looks far bigger and sharper, and smarter than the CR-V. Similarly, the interior of the CR-V is very plain and simple. The CR-V has better acceleration than the Outlander and does not feel sluggish. In terms of dimensions, the Outlander beats the CR-V with quite a margin.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander vs 2022 Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 is viewed as a rather promising vehicle, and especially since its significant update in 2020, it has become increasingly tough to go against due to Toyota’s stellar reputation for building reliable vehicles. Mitsubishi does not share a similar perception whatsoever, and can often be construed as being on the other end of the reliability spectrum due to shoddy after-sales service.

Nevertheless, people may remember Mitsubishi for its bulletproof mechanicals at one point of their supremacy in the American automobile market, and if they continue to carry on the way they have with the 2022 Outlander, they will be sure to bounce back to the top in no time.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Final Verdict

After looking at all the points it can be inferred that Mitsubishi has put in a significant amount of time, effort, brain, and money into the development of the new Outlander. This clearly shows that the company wants to stand up to the mark and deliver products with bespoke quality and engineering.

There is no doubt in the fact that the new Outlander is better than the older generation by a thousand times, and it is now set to tackle fiercer opponents and even emerge victoriously. Apart from the sluggish engine, the CVT gearbox, and the non-usable third row, there are no faults in the vehicle that can be pinpointed.

Rugged and sharp design, elegant interior, superb handling, good road presence, and a competitive price bracket make it a very competitive product in the Compact Crossover/SUV market. Mitsubishi is definitely going to see a rainbow at the end of the road now!
