It will most likely be upgraded with refined interior materials, additional safety equipment, and a wider body that will create more room for passengers inside its cabin. Other than that, the infotainment sector will also be dressed with hi-tech features, and the handling and moving dynamic of this car is also most likely to get enhanced this year. Although the hybrid model will continue with the 5-seater option, as per some reports, the body has been widened a bit, which leads to a little more space inside its cabin. It rivals the likes of Toyota RAV4, Kia Niro, and Ford Escape. Let’s explore the changes expected to come in the 2022 Outlander PHEV and compare them with the already established latest versions of its PHEV competitors.

We Recommend

The Outlander PHEV in a mid-level LE trim, expected to be in an estimated price range of around $39,000, would be the best option to choose. The LE trim is expected to get the new 9.0-inch infotainment unit and even the premium Bose sound system could be an optional feature. It also gets distinct styling and a power panoramic sunroof. The LE trim is the ideal one to go for.

What is the expected price and release date of the 2022 BMW 2 series coupe?

The price of the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will likely be around the $37,000 mark and upwards. The price hike was very likely, considering some major changes inside the car. The price may seem to be somewhat expensive when compared to its rivals who have better features and specifications.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid SUV Engine and Performance

7.0/10

Below the hood, the Outlander PHEV is expected to remain the same as its predecessor, and no changes are expected here. It is expected to draw its power from the same 2.4 L Inline-4 engine that will churn out 221 HP and 148 lb-ft of torque that is comparatively the lowest in its class. Its powertrain will be mated to a 1-speed Direct Drive automatic transmission that will come with driver and sport mode. Other than that, it will be supported by dual electric motors that will be placed on the front and rear axle of the car.

The power output is 126 hp from the petrol engine, and the rest comes from the 80kW dual electric motors. The 148 lb-ft of torque is generated by the gasoline powertrain, while the torque output of the electric motors is not specified. The Outlander PHEV is not the most powerful or the most aggressive PHEV SUV in the class, but it definitely comes with enough punch and delivers sufficient power and torque.

From the table, it would be safe to assume that in the power section, the Outlander PHEV is not way too behind than most of its adjacent competitors. Whereas, its rivals like the RAV4 and the lower-powered Kia Niro will provide you with much better power and acceleration that too at a lower cost. In fact, even the overall acceleration is mediocre of Outlander PHEV, with RAV4 setting a new benchmark of 5.7 seconds.

How does the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV handle?

The ride and handling of this car have got some tuning for 2021, but still, it doesn’t feel as seamless as its rivals. But still, it will be able to give you good stability and a smooth cabin experience in rough or bumpy pavements. Due to the presence of an AWD system, this car would feel smooth on sharp turns and will also provide a stable body motion. The ride through rough patches of roads is comfortable, and the suspension soaks up the bumps with ease.

The steering wheel may feel a little bit lighter in nature, but its responsiveness is appreciable. Other than that, the 2021 model year had an overall good performance on uneven roads, but the 2022 model is expected to be built upon the platform that the 2022 gas-powered Outlanders are built on. This might improve the handling and ride quality of the vehicle and let’s hope it does.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid SUV Fuel Economy

5.0/10

With a gasoline range of a combined 26 miles, it looks very average and doesn’t stand on par with some of its rivals who offer much better mileage than the Outlander PHEV. The Outlander PHEV offers an all-electric range of just 22 miles from the 13.8 kWh battery pack and a combined eMPG of 74 miles, which makes it clear that the Outlander PHEV is not the most fuel-efficient option in the segment.

The fuel MPG figures here completely turn in the favor of the Kia Niro, but Ford’s Escape is very close, trailing behind with just a margin of 3 MPGe combined. On the other hand, th Toyota RAV4 Prime has the biggest fuel tank out of them, which gives it an upper hand in terms of range. The Outlander, however, is way behind the rivals in this comparison.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid SUV Interior

9.0/10

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is expected to receive some major refreshments in its interior this year. Previously, this car has received a little outrage from both the automobile critics as well as the buyers for its average cabin features and quality that too at a much higher cost. But for 2022, we will most likely see its cabin dressed in plush materials and better features. The cabin space is also very likely to get increased this year, which will take it to the list of most spacious SUVs in its segment.

The 2022 Outlander PHEV is expected to feature Tri-Zone Climate Control along with 8-way powered seats with memory function and heating in leather or semi-aniline leather cushioning. The interior is expected to feature premium quality materials with great quality, fit, and finish even though not uber-luxurious. The design layout will also come with uplifted looks and better ergonomics than before. Overall the quality of the cabin would be improved, and the cabin will be a bit more classy and upscale.

From the above data, we can say that the Outlander PHEV will have much better cabin space when compared to all the other rivals in its segment. For now, the rivals here like the Escape and RAV4 have much better space for you to stretch out. The cargo space of the Outlander is also just a little less than Escape and RAV4. Some features of this car’s interior are mentioned below:

  • Tri-Zone Climate Control
  • 8-way powered seats with memory function
  • Leather or semi-aniline leather cushions
  • Noise and vibration reduction
  • Heated seats

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: Infotainment & Connectivity

In the infotainment department, Outlander used to have very basic features until 2021. But this year, it is very likely to get various advanced tech like most of its competitors in the market. It will have a big 9.0-inch touch-mounted screen at the center with a unique design that makes it look very futuristic.

Other than that, there are 10 good quality stereo speakers from Bose, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging pads, HD radio, and 2 USB ports. Moreover, we will also get Bluetooth and navigation features along with all the other basic features. Some infotainment features of this car are mentioned below:

  • Bose 10-speaker audio system with a digital subwoofer
  • 12.3-inch digital driver display
  • Apple Carplay & Android Auto
  • 9.0-inch touch screen infotainment unit
  • Navigation & Bluetooth
  • Wireless smartphone charging pads

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid SUV Exterior

5.0/10

Yes, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is expected to go through some major revamps in the exterior. It will most likely have a sportier and futuristic look that is somewhat the trend of today. The body of this car will also most likely be widened for this model year, which will result in having more cabin space for the passengers. The thin front DRLs lights along with the sleek, blacked-out grille will all in all give it a much better look. Below the LED DRLs, we will get to see big LED headlamps on both sides of the grille, which will be separated by the body paint.

The rear profile of the Outlander also resembles a very aesthetic look overall. Overall, the exterior dimensions look pretty good for the Outlander, but we must admit to the fact that it is indeed the heaviest in its class. The figures are taken from the 2021 model as the dimensions for the 2022 model are not available yet. The width and ground clearance will most likely get a buff for this year’s model giving it more road presence.

Talking about the current comparison, every other car here has a somewhat similar and very good dimension. But, we have to admit that both the Escape and RAV4 have a higher ground clearance, which is indeed an advantage here for an SUV. The Outlander is expected to be the second heaviest in the competition, followed by the Toyota RAV4 Prime, whereas the Kia Niro will remain the lightest. Major exterior highlights of the SUV are:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Full-LED headlights
  • Power panoramic sunroof
  • Grand horizon high stability rear lights with T-shaped ends

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid SUV Safety

5.0/10

The 2022 Outlander PHEV is expected to come equipped with a set of advanced safety features. The Outlander would possibly come with a multi-view camera system providing a 360° camera view of the vehicle. The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander got an impressive 5-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, and the 2022 version is also expected to get a similar rating with improvement at possible sections. The 2022 Outlander PHEV is also expected to come with Traffic Jam Assist, Speed Limit Assist, and Lane Centering Technology along with the following safety features.

  • Active Blind Spot Assist
  • Rear Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Driver Attention Alert
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) with Pedestrian Detection

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid SUV Final Verdict

With the arrival of the RAV4 Prime at the scene, the little to no hope that the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV had of succeeding has somewhat diminished. While the overall interior and styling will be heavily updated, the powertrain just lacks the punch of the rivals. Heck, even the Escape PHEV looks like a better proposition, considering it’s only marginally more expensive than the Mitsubishi. Overall, it looks like Mitsubishi has been left behind by its other Japanese peers, and despite having Nissan’s cutting-edge tech at their disposal, they just don’t seem to learn!
