A nameplate that won hearts for more than 20 years, the Kia Sorento is sliced between the three-row Telluride SUV and the compact Sportage SUV in the Kia lineup. Not long ago, following the footsteps of the Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV, the Sorento lineup received a new addition for 2022 MY in the form of a PHEV model under the brand’s ‘S-Plan’ electrification strategy.
The 2022 Kia Sorento Turbo Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV is now available for sale alongside its conventional gas-powered and hybrid models. The Sorento Phev model is available in two trim levels- SX with a starting price of $44,990 and SX-Prestige with an MSRP of $47,890. It locks its horns with competition like the Toyota RAV4 Prime and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
Although the MSRP mentioned previously excludes a destination and handling charge of $1,175, you can avail of up to $6,875 federal tax credits as well as other state incentives. A host of options are offered as well including the Panoramic Sunroof package($1,300), a rear-seat entertainment system($1,500), an interior lighting kit($450), and a two hitch($475).
The 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine in combination with a 66.9 kW electric motor. This setup develops a combined 261 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. The 6-speed automatic transmission featured on Sorento PHEV transmits the power to a torque-vectoring AWD system having a center locking differential.
Incorporating a 13.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the 2022 Sorento PHEV offers an EPA-estimated 32-mile all-electric driving range. With an EPA-estimated system range of 460 miles on full tank plus full charge, it returns 79 MPGe on a combined basis.
The 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV is the only mainstream plug-in hybrid SUV to feature a three-row seating configuration. The second-row captain’s chair allows a maximum seating capacity of up to 6 passengers. It offers a 12.6 cu-ft cargo hold with all seats upright that can expand up to 75.5 cu-ft capacity with seats folded.
The cabin feels plush and appealing with the standard Syntex upholstery or available leather seating, along with brushed metal trim accents. The front seat occupants can enjoy the convenience of power adjustment and heating function with available ventilation, whereas the dual-zone climate control and reclining third-row seats make the interiors comfier.
The 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV is laden with tech which is evident from the 10.25-inch touchscreen system that integrates Apple Carplay, Android Auto, navigation, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Apart from a standard wireless charger, you also get 8 USB ports spread across the three rows. Features like a 12.3-inch fully digital cluster and a surround-view monitor are available on the top-end SXP trim.
