The 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class has been completely redesigned and is now more powerful. The AMG designed powertrains have enhanced the capabilities of the SL-Class and now leans more towards the sporty side. Starting at a base price of $85,000, the top trim can reach up to a premium MSRP of $115,000.

The legendary Mercedes-Benz SL-Class has always been a vehicle of desire for decades now. While it’s difficult to get your hands on the original one, you can still own a piece of history through the 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. After a year’s gap, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is back with quite a few changes. The major one being in the trim levels along with the engine options. This new variant is being developed by the AMG performance skunkworks, and not Mercedes-Benz, and thus we expect to see sports car level performance.

While the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class carries the same inline-6 cylinder and V8 engine options, they are now much more powerful than what we saw in the previous 2020 model. With that we would get to see a new rear-wheel-drive platform which is used by the GT models by AMG and thus would provide better overall performance. On the exterior, the hard roof-top would be replaced by a soft-rooftop. Thus the 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL_Class would compete with the likes of Jaguar F-Type R-Dynamic Convertible and the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet.

What’s New

  • Folding soft top
  • Replaces the S-Class Cabriolet
  • 7-generation SL-Class with the 2022 model

What to expect under the hood of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is expected to be available in two engine options. The base 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine engine would be standard on the SL43 and SL53 trim. This 3.0-liter engine would generate around 429 hp, which is a 67 hp boost from the previous model's base engine. In addition to that, there would be another 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that would be available in the top SL63 trim. This engine would generate around 577 hp, and thus the most powerful in the lineup.

Both the engines are expected to mate with the same 9-speed automatic transmission from the previous model. But the 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class would now get a rear-wheel-drive setup that we see in the AMG GT models from Mercedes-Benz. Thus the new 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL would be more performance focused and provide an exhilarating feel behind the wheels. As the 2022 SL-Class is still in testing phase, there have been no speculations regarding the 0-60 mph acceleration performance, but we expect it to be much better than the previous model.

With the extra added ponies, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL would be the most powerful in this comparison. Both the Jaguar F-Type R-Dynamic Convertible and the 2021 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet offer the same power output of 380 hp and 379 hp respectively. Both of them come standard with a 8-speed automatic transmission, while the Jaguar gets an AWD setup as standard.

How does the 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Handle?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class gets major upgrades in terms of the engine and power output. The extra power output would surely provide a better ride experience along with quicker acceleration. The 9-speed automatic transmission is quite smooth and provides effortless shifts that provide a comfortable ride quality.

The previous Mercedes-Benz SL was shifter and imprecise on the corners, but the 2022 SL-Class with its rear-wheel-drive setup that we see on the AMG GT models would be more accurate and aggressive in the corners. Thus the SL-Class would be a perfect combination of comfort and performance drive altogether.

How many miles to the gallon will the 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class deliver?

While there is no official release or testing of the fuel economy provided by the 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, we expect the fuel economy to go down due to the increase in power output. But still, currently these are the speculations and Mercedes can surprise us with a similar fuel economy from the 2022 SL.

We don’t expect to see change in the cargo capacity as well, but would be able to get a clear idea when Mercedes officially releases the vehicle.

We get to see a lot of camouflage spy shots of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class which gives us an idea about the exterior design of the vehicle. We get to see a lot of changes to the exterior design starting from the front grille to the tail lamps. The headlamp looks more sleek while the large hood drops down a bit in the front.

At the rear we see an active spoiler which would help keep the vehicle grounded at higher speeds. The conventional hard roof top is now replaced with the soft top. The design seems to be more compact with a shorter wheelbase. We expect the use of more light weight materials that would reduce the curb weight of the vehicle for better handling overall performance.
