An update to the Subaru WRX STI has been desired by the fans for a long time and it's finally here. A brand new engine, with an improved transmission will drive this 2022 STI. The easy affordability of the Subaru STI coupled with the appealing performance and the precise handling, while doing its job as a daily sedan makes this one of the most desired sedans in the market today.

The Subaru WRX STI is an all-wheel drive sport compact sedan based on the Subaru Impreza. It split from the Impreza in 2014, and has continued on since then as a separate model. Apart from some mild refreshments in between, the WRX received no significant update. The STI is the performance variant of the WRX. The year 2022 marks the entry of the 2nd generation of the WRX sedan, with a completely new body, exterior and interior design and a more powerful engine setup.

The Subaru WRX sedan is widely popular in the US: thanks to its affordable price, the level of performance offered and the kind of accessibility around the WRX. The STI takes everything on the WRX (that’s already slightly above normal) and places it at an even higher level. The STI is faster, corners flatter and brakes as required. The 2022 Subaru WRX STI is expected to be powered by an all-new engine, replacing the 2.0L with a 2.4L. The pricing is estimated at around upwards of $40,000 for the STI. The Subaru WRX STI goes up against the 2021 Honda Civic Type-R, the 2021 Hyundai Sonata N-line and the 2021 Toyota Camry TRD.

What’s new:

  • Redesigned interior and exterior
  • New engine
  • Better brakes
  • Better safety technology
  • More creature comforts

The WRX STI will be the most expensive car in the lot, asking a premium of over $5000 to the rival cars. The performance of the car is expected to improve slightly over the last year, by around 0.2-0.3 seconds in the 0-60 mph run and the quarter-mile.

With this upgrade, the WRX STI is expected to be the most powerful car in this comparo. It’ll make around 80 horses more and around the same torque figures as the existing model. This added performance will surely give the WRX STI an edge that will prove to be dangerous to their competitors. The Subaru also has the advantage of being the only AWD car in this comparison.

How does the 2022 Subaru WRX STI handle?

The current WRX STI is one hell of a handler, and we expect the 2022 model to outperform the existing car with better handling and stability. The car is expected to be equipped with Brembo brakes for improved braking performance and better control. The new design and the added body features will surely affect the handling in a better way.

How many miles to the gallon will the 2022 Subaru WRX STI deliver?

The Subaru WRX has always remained an economical car even with all the performance. Although these ‘economical fuel estimates’ will be lower than the other rivals, it’s decent for a car that makes so much power and torque. However, with the new engine and increased power, we expect the numbers to reduce slightly over the current EPA estimates.

The outgoing model’s economy figures are lower than the rivals, and this might drop on the 2022 model. Among the rivals, the Sonata offers the most mileage, has the largest tank and thus offers the most range among the four.

What to expect from the 2022 Subaru WRX STI’s interior?

There has been no information about the interiors on the Subaru WRX STI, but we can expect them to be similar to the interiors seen on the Outback and other Subaru models. Apart from this, the STI is expected to get sport seats and stitched leather interiors with buttons mounted on the steering wheel and a cockpit style of the dash layout.

Adjustable seats, a sunroof, a dual-tone interior can be expected on the STI. Although the car has received a complete upgrade, we believe that the interior space will not take a hit and will still remain as comfortable and supportive as it was on the current generation.

Will there be any changes to the exterior of the 2022 Subaru WRX STI?

The 2022 Subaru WRX STI is expected to get serious refreshments to its exteriors, with a sporty design styling. The new Subaru WRX STI is based on Subaru’s Global Platform. Based on spy shots of the car under testing and the Subaru VIZIV STI concept showcased a few years back, it appears to have a more angular look. The test car appears to have a low-slung profile with a wide air intake atop the hood. The grille also appears to be more defined in its design. The rear bumper features a crease that runs into the rear doors, and the taillights have a sharp C-shaped design with a quad-exhaust setup.

The all-new 2022 Subaru WRX STI is expected to have an overall length of 183 inches, a height of 57 inches and a width of 71 inches. The length and width might see an increase of 2.2 inches and 0.4 inches respectively.

Will the 2022 Subaru WRX STI be worth it?

From all that has been heard about the 2022 Subaru WRX STI, we believe that it will be an exceptional car. The wait is not too long, and is due this fall. The estimated price of $40,000 for the STI is not at all hefty, it's something worth paying for and is solid value for money. The concept car looks fascinating, and it’ll be a very aggressive design if it does actually come out. The performance expected is like that of a muscle car, and the interior comfort like that of a midsize sedan. All in all, with the package that the 2022 Subaru WRX STI will bring along, it will stand true to its ground and make a strong statement.
