Expert Review

CARHP Editorial June 21, 2019

Even though the 2009 design has not been updated, you could argue if it really does need an update. The raw mechanical character is now a rare breed or rather endangered would be a better term. The manual transmission is amazing to drive and fun to shift, while the automatic transmission is reliable and quick while accelerating. The only smudge on the flawless coupe is the infotainment which, well, also belongs to 2009.

2018 Nissan 370Z NISMO Coupe Features

The Nismo trim comes with most of what the Touring coupe comes with but adds tuned suspensions, better tires, aero upgrades as well as Recaro seats which completely transform the coupe. The Nismo Tech trim upgrades the infotainment with a bigger touchscreen and navigation system.

The Nismo Tech is a better choice of trims as the already affordable performance coupe gets some tech bling like a touchscreen and navigation, which is necessary for any car in 2018.

2018 Nissan 370Z NISMO Coupe Engine

A sports car should excel above everything else in the performance. And while the Z manages to keep up with the competition in a straight line, its handling prowess is restricted by a lack of a proper differential and an unrefined drivetrain -Edmunds

Engine and transmission

The tiny Nismo coupe gets a surprisingly massive 3.7L V6 engine which makes a massive 350hp and 276lb-ft. Although the exhaust note doesn't compare to the baritones of most performance coupes like the BMW and Mercedes, the output certainly keeps the 370Z on par with the more expensive competition. Available with both manual and automatic transmission, the stick shift is highly recommended if you want to enjoy the 370Z Nismo to the fullest.

In Comparison, the BMW M240i and the Cadillac ATS come with 355 hp engines which set them a tiny step ahead of the 370Z. The CLA 45 AMG is the most powerful coupe in the bunch with 375 hp at tis disposal. However, the S5 lags behind with a 333hp output. The gearbox in the CLA 45 AMG is far better than the 370Z as well

Acceleration

The 370Z Nismo has a wonderful naturally aspirated engine and since there is no turbocharger, there is no turbo lag. With 350hp at its disposal, the Nismo coupe goes to 60 in just 5 seconds flat. Almost a decade and this engine has seen a lot of upgrades to extract the best out of it. The engine boasts of a crazy 7500 rpm redline. Floor the gas pedal, and this V6 growls like a bear.

Ride and Handling

One thing that works against the 370Z Nismo is a great handling coupe with stunning stability and virtually zero body roll through twisty mountain roads puts the 370Z Nismo far ahead of the competition in terms of driving dynamics.

In the city the ride is relatively relaxed and controlled, the throttle response is predictable yet precise. The 370Z is equipped with standard summer tires. The steering offers great driving feel with the road. The precision of the steering wheel makes turning predictable. The 370Z might be a little shy on straights but it shows impeccable behavior around the corners. The 370Z is a RWD sports car and it lives up to the name.

Braking

The braking on the 370Z Nismo's is far better than you'd expect. With a weight of just of 3339 lbs. comes to a halt from 60 MPH before much of the competition. Although the AMG CLA45 manages to pull tighter numbers despite the greater weight. With 14 inch brakes up front and equally massive 13.8 inch at the back the braking is on point.

2018 Nissan 370Z NISMO Coupe Interior

The list of standard and available features is pretty slim, though this is in line with Nissan's approach of the 370Z as a driver's car.-Cars.USnews

Seating and Comfort

The driver's seat is where you want to be. The entire dashboard layout is focused to help the driver make the best out of the car. The instrument cluster is angled towards the driver. The gauges incorporate the retro looks from yesteryears. The tachometer sits at the center of the instrument console with a big red needle.

Front visibility is good but you need to be careful with blind spots at the rear. The rear glass offers limited visibility. It is vital to adjust the rearview mirrors to escape the blind spots. The seats tuck you in during those spirited drives.

The 370Z Nismo is a 2 seater compared to the coupes in the competition which can manage to seat up to 5 passengers. So if you need to carry around your friends or family in the 370Z you'll need to make multiple trips to take everyone one by one, but at least you'll have fun driving it around.

Infotainment System

The 370Z comes with a standard 6-speaker audio system, auxiliary input, Bluetooth connectivity, and iPod integration. The technology offered by Nissan is easy to use. The 370Z is a driver-focused car, and Nissan has only packed it with bare minimum equipment. The quality of materials is reminiscent of the 370Z's Infiniti brethren. Options include a 7-inch touchscreen, a Bose sound system, and a rearview camera.

Trunk volume

The Nissan 370Z Nismo sits on the pedestal of performance cars. It shares its place with flagship GT-R as the only performance-oriented vehicles offered by Nissan. However, it takes a big hit when it comes to practicality. The rear cargo space is abysmal. Even the cabin has very few places to keep stuff.

Design and Dimensions

The current generation has been around for 8 years. The Nissan 370Z Nismo has aged well and the 370Z is a pleasing thing to look at. It is rather hard to point out the shortcomings of the design. Nissan hasn't left much room to nitpick about things. The 370Z Nismo has a low curb weight and a peppy V6 engine that inspires spirited driving. The 370Z is a jolly good machine around the corners. But the 370Z Nismo takes a big hit when it comes to practicality. The cargo space is non-existent.

2018 Nissan 370Z NISMO Coupe Competition

Nissan 370Z Nismo vs BMW M240i

The BMW 2 series coupe is a 4-seater coupe in contrast to the 2-seater Nissan 370Z Nismo and also has more cargo capacity at the back. Not just in practicality, the M240i is no slouch in driving dynamics either. Refined through the ages the rear-wheel-drive coupes go head to head on the track with amazing grip high revving engines. On the inside, the BMW is much more comfortable and gets premium materials which the Nissan skips out on.

Nissan 370Z Nismo vs Mercedes-AMG CLA 45

The CLA 45 AMG not only has massive 375hp output engine but also has the best fuel economy in the segment. the 5 seater coupe is roomier and more practical in the truck than the 370Z Nismo. The exhaust note has been tuned by AMG engineers and the baritone is beyond compare. In comparison, the buzzy Nismo engine is a naturally aspirated unit with zero turbo lag, despite this redeeming features the better driving Merc puts the final nail in 370Z coffin with better and larger interiors.

2018 Nissan 370Z NISMO Coupe Final Verdict

Despite Nissan's best effort to pitch the 370Z Nismo as the rising underdog amongst performance coupes, the real world ain't a movie. The coupe with much larger interiors and updated infotainment - the CLA 45 AMG - still wins the championship title. Those looking for sheer driving performance should check out the Porsche 718 Cayman instead, or rather wait for the sequel when the 370Z Nismo actually does get the big guns like an updated infotainment.
