The Nissan Frontier Crew Cab continues in 2018 with no major changes compared to the previous model year of the truck. The Nissan Frontier offers good value for your money as it is relatively cheaper than the rivals. However, the affordable pricing comes with some compromises in the form of outdated interior and fewer features compared to the more updated and modern rivals. Still, the higher models of the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab offer a pretty good list of standard features for the price you are paying.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2018 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab starts at an MSRP of $19,000 for its base S trim and the top-trim SL costs $37,845 without any options. The minor changes to the 2018 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab include the features like air conditioning, a 5-inch display, Bluetooth connectivity, and a backup camera getting standard right from the base model. The 2018 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab competes against the likes of the Toyota Tacoma, Chevy Colorado, and the GMC Canyon

Features
9.9/10

The 2018 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab is available in five trim levels S, SV, Desert Runner, Pro-4X, and SL. There are two powertrain options to choose from depending on the trim level that you buy. The standard features with the Nissan Frontier include 16-inch steel wheels, cloth front bucket seats, air conditioning, a 5-inch central display, a 4-speaker sound system, and Siri Eyes Free voice command. The SV trim level adds 16-inch alloy wheels, satellite radio, sliding rear window, power accessories, and a rearview camera. The Desert Runner trim adds foglights, special styling trims, off-road tires, and high-performance shock absorbers. The Pro-4X trim adds automatic headlights, a locking rear differential, specially tuned shocks, a 5.8-inch NissanConnect touchscreen, and a 10-speaker Rockford Fosgate audio system.

We recommend

The 2018 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab does not offer the more modern features that the rivals offer but it gets the basics done. You can go for the Pro-4X trim of the Nissan Frontier as it offers excellent off-road capabilities for the money you are paying. It also adds many useful features standard with the truck. It is also less expensive than the similarly equipped rivals.

Engine and Performance
5.5/10

The powertrain options of the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab have not received any update for a long time now like the rest of the truck. Based on the trim level that you buy, the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab is available in two powertrain options. The base Frontier is powered by a 2.5-liter Inline-4 engine that produces 152 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque. The power figures do not look exciting on paper and the story remains the same even on the roads. The engine comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels.

The Nissan Frontier is also available with an optional 4-liter V6 engine that produces 261 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. The engine comes mated to the same transmission options. The extra power from the V6 engine is clearly evident in the performance of the car out on the road. The Nissan Frontier Crew Cab powered by the base 2.5L I4 manages to complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 7.5 seconds. The quarter-mile from the same engine takes 16.5 seconds which is not bad at all.

The base engine of the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab is the least powerful engine in the competition. However, it manages to be the fastest truck in the segment in the 0 to 60 mph sprint. The Toyota Tacoma takes second place with a small margin as it takes only 9.1 seconds in the 0 to 60 mph sprint. The Chevy Colorado is the slowest truck in the comparison as it takes almost 10 seconds to achieve a similar feat.

2018 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Ride and Handling

The handling is not one of the strongest points of the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab. The 2018 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab performs pretty well in the handling department for a pickup truck. However, the handling does not inspire any confidence in the driver at all while driving the Frontier Crew Cab. The steering wheel responds well to the driver inputs but the feedback is almost zero inside the cabin. It does not give you the connection from the road feel if you are expecting that.

The handling of the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab is good for someone who wants to go from point A to point B without getting expecting much driving pleasure. The suspension is set up very well to provide a good balance between ride and handling. The Nissan Frontier Crew Cab will not disappoint you in the ride quality department as it does a good job of flattening out the road bumps for you. The truck feels comfortable from inside as there is not much movement inside the cabin either.

2018 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Braking Performance

The braking performance of the Nissan Frontier is not among the best in its class. Nissan has used fairly big brake rotors for the Frontier, which should do a good job of stopping the truck as it is one of the lighter trucks in the segment and the brakes perform well too. However, they are not as good as they could be. The Nissan Frontier Crew Cab gets 11.1-inch brake rotors for the front wheels while bigger 11.3-inch brake rotors for the rear wheels. The brakes are able to stop the Nissan Frontier from 60 mph to a complete stop in just 125 feet.

Although the Chevrolet Colorado is the heaviest truck in the segment, it offers the best stopping distance for the class. The Chevy Colorado stops from 60 mph to a complete halt in just 119 feet. The lighter Toyota Tacoma with similar size braking hardware takes 123 feet to stop from the same speed. The Nissan Frontier Crew Cab takes the highest distance to stop from 60 mph even though it is lighter than the competition.

Fuel Economy
5.6/10

The Nissan Frontier Crew Cab will not impress you with the fuel economy figures that it offers. Even the base engine of the Nissan Frontier is not among the most fuel-efficient engines in the class. The Nissan Frontier Crew Cab with its base engine manages to return a fuel economy of 15 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway, and a combined fuel economy of 17 mpg. The fuel economy figures further drop if you go for the optional V6 powertrain option. The Nissan Frontier comes with a 21.1-gallon fuel tank capacity and you can go for a maximum of 443 miles on the highway without the need for a break at the gas station.

The GMC Canyon comes with the best fuel efficiency in the segment and it also offers the best highway range compared to all the other rivals. The GMC Canyon can go for a maximum of 546 miles on the highway on a full tank. The Nissan Frontier on the other hand returns the least fuel economy figures for its segment. The highway range of the Nissan Frontier is similar to that of the Toyota Tacoma.

Interior
4.0/10

The Nissan Frontier Crew Cab comes with a practical interior design and you should not expect great quality from the cabin. The interior of the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab has not received any major changes since its launch back in 2005. The cabin design clearly looks like it is from the last decade. The outdated cabin is not one of the pleasing things about the Frontier. However, all the controls are placed in the driver’s reach to make it one of the easy-to-use cabins. It performs pretty well in that department.

The space inside the cabin of the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab is also not one of the strong points of the truck. The legroom feels cramped and the driving position is also not the most comfortable in the segment. The Nissan Frontier Crew Cab needs an improvement to fix the space issue inside the cabin and offer a better driving position. The steering wheel is also not comfortable to hold. The interior of the Frontier Crew Cab needs some significant changes to keep up with the competition.

The Nissan Frontier Crew Cab is the only truck in the segment that can only accommodate 4 passengers inside its cabin. All the other trucks come in a 5-seater variant on paper. The Toyota Tacoma offers the least legroom for the rear passengers followed by the Nissan Frontier. The space is not at all a concern for the buyers of the Chevy Colorado or the Canyon.

Standout interior features:

  • 8-way power driver seat
  • 60-40 split-folding rear seat
  • Manual tilt steering wheel
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Cruise control
  • Air filtration

2018 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Infotainment System

The 2018 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab gets a 5.8-inch touchscreen infotainment display. The infotainment system runs on the NissanConnect touchscreen interface. The infotainment system is easy-to-use and all the features are easy to navigate. The screen size could be a little larger considering the competition. The system also lacks connectivity features like 4G hotspot capabilities as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The standard 6-speaker audio system is not the best for the class. However, the higher trims get a 10-speaker Rockford Fosgate audio system.

Standout infotainment system:

  • 5.8-inch touchscreen infotainment display
  • NissanConnect touchscreen interface
  • Voice recognition
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • In-built navigation system
  • 10-speaker Rockford Fosgate audio system
Exterior
5.5/10

The Nissan Frontier Crew Cab gets the same old exterior design language that it was launched with. It won’t take a minute to recognize a Frontier out on the road even if you are looking at it from a mile away. Still, the exterior design of the Frontier will not disappoint you even after all these years. If you love the big and bulky look, the Nissan Frontier might not be the best pickup truck for you.

There is a good amount of chrome on the front of the truck, especially, when you look around the front grille. It is the first thing that catches your attention along with the big headlights at the sides. The design looks outdated for sure but it is still one aspect that you will get used to in a while. The compact dimensions of the Nissan Frontier don’t help the road presence of the truck.

The Nissan Frontier Crew Cab is smaller than the rivals in every dimension. It also gets the shortest wheelbase in the segment. The Toyota Tacoma is considerably bigger than the Frontier in length, width, and height. Tacoma also offers the best ground clearance in the competition. The GMC Canyon shares its dimension with the Chevy Colorado.

Standout exterior features:

  • 16” to 18” wheels
  • Spray-in bed liner
  • Power heated side mirrors
  • Front fog lamps
  • Deep tinted glass
Safety
4.0/10

The 2018 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab comes with acceptable safety features for its class. It lacks advanced driver assistance features available in some of the other rivals in the segment. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given the Nissan Frontier an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The safety rating is quite impressive for the class. However, the addition of the more advanced driver assistance features is still expected to keep up with the competition.

The safety features include:

  • Traction control
  • Electronic stability control
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Low tire pressure warning
  • Rear child safety locks
  • Backup camera
Competition
9.0/10

Nissan Frontier vs. Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma was recently updated in 2016 and it gets updated features when you compare it with the Nissan Frontier. Tacoma gets impressive off-road capabilities and the reliability of Toyota makes it a great choice in the segment. However, none of the trucks can be considered modern by any chance. The Toyota Tacoma is still better between the two.

Nissan Frontier vs. Chevy Colorado

Chevy Colorado is one of the most appealing options in the entire segment. The Chevy Colorado offers a great all-around package for the price. It comes with an impressive list of standard features and also offers great capabilities. The Chevy Colorado comes out as a better option than the Nissan Frontier in most aspects.

Nissan Frontier vs. GMC Canyon

The GMC Canyon does not come with the same capabilities as the Nissan Frontier in terms of payload capacity or for off-road conditions. But GMC Canyon is better in every other department compared to the Nissan Frontier. It gets upscale and more modern cabin with better standard features. The space inside the GMC Canyon is also better than the Nissan Frontier and as a result, it is the clear winner here.

Final Verdict

Although there have been no major changes to the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab since its launch in 2005, the Nissan Frontier still comes with great capabilities for the price you pay. It comes at a more affordable price compared to the better-equipped rivals. However, there are many compromises you need to make for a slightly lower price. If you wish to buy a Nissan Frontier, you can consider waiting for a year as it is supposed to get significant updates next year.
