The 2022 Nissan GT-R continues to go for sale this year with no major changes. So far, its release date or pricing has not been revealed. Under the hood, you get a 3.8L twin-turbo V6 engine that makes 565 hp and 467 lb-ft. of torque. It can sprint off the line from 0-60 MPH in just 2.9 seconds. No wonder its fans call it the Godzilla because it can smash everything in its path.

2022 Nissan GT-R three-quarter view

The GT-R NISMO is tuned for speed freaks and is now available with a Special Edition based on NISMO. Looking at the GT-R's interior, one can clearly guess the age of the car. The cabin is comfortable and practical but misses some important highlights in terms of technology that its rivals offer.  Some of the main competitors of the GT-R are the Audi R8, Acura NSX, and the Porsche 911 Turbo.

Nissan's GT-R is an unstoppable and entertaining force through winter- Cnet

The Nissan GT-R continues to woo its customers with its aggressive looks and a breathtaking twin-turbo V6 engine. Nicknamed the Godzilla, the GT-R easily gaps some of the mainstream supercars which cost twice as much. Also, the potential of this car to be able to be tuned and upgraded to a greater extent is what is loved by everyone.

For a car that carries an expected price tag of nearly $150,000, it is evident that's its maintenance and repairs are going to be high. However, owing to its Japanese moniker, the running costs will be less than its fellow German rivals. Also, due to its high popularity in America, there is no doubt that the Godzilla has a high resale value in the market.

2022 Nissan GT-R Buying Advice

The Nissan GT-R is available in just Premium trim and it should quench your thirst for performance. Except for the Premium Interior package, Nissan doesn't provide any optional upgrades as it is pretty much loaded with a decent list of features. If you are looking for extreme performance, the GT-R NISMO is also an option.

The  Nissan GT-R commands high prices, but its base model is still a performance value- The Car Connection

The Nissan GT-R is offered in just one trim level i.e. Premium. The 2022 GT-R is yet to release in America and so is its official pricing. We expect it to be close to $150,000 but the specs and features remain the same as the outgoing model. The NISMO version of the GT-R is also available for power-hungry enthusiasts and is now with a Special Edition this year.

The Premium trim comes standard with an AWD configuration and adds all the niceties required for a sports car. There is only one optional package for the GT-R and that is the Premium Interior package. This package replaces the leather upholstery with semi-aniline leather with a broader range of color options for those who love a colorful interior.

2022 Nissan GT-R Engine and Performance

From a speed and acceleration standpoint, the GT-R is about as good as it gets- Autotrader

Power for the Nissan GT-R comes from a 3.8L twin-turbocharged V6 engine that churns out 565 hp and 467 lb-ft. of torque. It is mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission while the power is sent to all four wheels. The gearbox is very quick and there is no lag when you shift gears. You could also force-shift gears using the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. There's an incredibly strong mid-range with hardly any turbo lag.

2022 Nissan GT-R engine bay

The GT-R is a car that can be driven on a racetrack or for day-to-day purposes. The Comfort mode does soften up the suspension and it manages to soak up the bumps to a relatively decent extent. In other settings, you may feel firmness to the suspension. On a twisty road, the GT-R really proves itself. It has amazing levels of grip and the body roll is almost zero. The steering is also precise and nicely weighted.

2022 Nissan GT-R front driving view

Of course, what's brilliant about the GT-R is its performance. It can do a 0-60 MPH sprint in just 2.9 seconds and covers a quarter-mile distance in a mere 11.2 seconds. Keep the pedal floored and its top speed roars all the way up to 205 MPH. These are serious numbers and the GT-R does it easily every time you see an open road. The large ventilated disc brakes do a great job in bringing this beast to halt in just 99 feet.

The Acura NSX is a few milliseconds faster than the GT-R as it makes more power. However, in the long run, the Audi R8 is the most agile one. Also, it is the only car here that comes standard with an RWD drivetrain. The Porsche 911 Turbo's performance is equally challenging into the GT-R but at a higher expense.

The Nissan GT-R drinks fuel but not as much as it could given its power and weight- The Car Connection

This segment of cars is not particularly fuel economy centric but still, the 3.8L twin-turbo V6 of the Nissan GT-R proves to be a bit efficient than its competitors. The EPA-estimates numbers are 16 MPG in the city, 22 MPG on a highway, and 18 MPG combined. These figures are better than most cars in its segment.

2022 Nissan GT-R side view

The GT-R gets a decently-sized 19.5-gallon fuel tank, which at its full capacity, can deliver up to 312 miles in the city while the highway range is limited to 429 miles. In mixed proportions, the GT-R can drive up to 351 miles. These are respectable ranges for a sports car that produces more than 550 horses.

Thanks to the hybrid powertrain in the Acura NSX, it is the most fuel-efficient sports car in this competition. On the other hand, the Audi R8 has the worst efficiency. The Porsche 911 Turbo's fuel economy is better than the GT-R but it delivers the least range here as it houses a smaller tank than the GT-R.

2022 Nissan GT-R Interior

Improvements throughout its life span have kept the GT-R's cabin looking fresh- Edmunds

The interior of the Nissan GT-R feels low-rent. The fit and finish are really good and there are traces of carbon fiber finish but it still isn't a very special interior. The dashboard is designed to be functional and is finished in suede inserts. The Recaro bucket seats in the front are finished in leather with Alcantara inserts. They are very soft and comfortable while the bolstering on the seats makes it look sporty as well.

2022 Nissan GT-R dashboard

Both the front seats are power-adjustable and come standard with heated functionality. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather and looks premium. The space in the front is good so taller folks won’t find any issues getting in and out of the car. The rear seats are also cushioned and comfortable but are very cramped up. So, forget about adults, kids sitting comfortably is a big thing. It is better to keep your belongings at the back.

2022 Nissan GT-R infotainment system

The GT-R gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display that only features Apple CarPlay. The display is of excellent quality and there is no screen glare issue even in bright sunlight. The Nissan Connect interface seems outdated and the touchscreen responds slowly to user inputs but the menus are logically laid. The system is paired with an 11-speaker Bose premium sound system whose sound quality is good.

The GT-R surprises with its practical nature. It's a sports car and yet it offers a purposeful 8.8 cubic feet which are good for a couple of duffle bags or golf bags. If the rear seats are unoccupied, they can also be used for carrying additional bags. You also get decent storage options inside the cabin. Some other interior features are:

  • Leather steering wheel with paddle shifters
  • Power front leather seats
  • Heated front seats
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Aluminum foot pedals
  • Leather dash with carbon fiber inserts

Exterior looks of the GT-R are unmistakable- CarProUSA

The design of the Nissan GT-R has been around for years and looks a bit outdated. The GT-R is nearly a decade old but the thing with sports cars is that they rarely age and the GT-R is no exception. It still looks aggressive today. The exterior design is more purposeful rather than being dramatic. The front-end design is supported by the V-motion grille, sharper-looking LED headlamps, and a larger opening below to aid cooling.

2022 Nissan GT-R three-quarter view

The wheel arches house 20-inch forged-alloy wheels. Like a typical sports car, it has a ground clearance of 4.3 inches but its lengthy profile can be a headache while parking. There are some functional touches like the side sills which are pushed out to aid airflow and at the rear, there are functional vents next to the massive exhausts. It's the GT-R, so the hallmark four-ring taillights are there to let everyone know who they've just been overtaken by.

The short wheelbase of the Porsche 911 Turbo assists in quicker burnout during acceleration. The Acura NSX sits 0.5 inches lower than the GT-R to increase the potential for speed on smooth roads. The Audi R8's short length is helpful in easy and quick maneuverability. Some other exterior features are:

  • LED headlights
  • LED taillights
  • LED DRLs
  • Power-folding, heated exterior mirrors
  • 20-inch wheels

2022 Nissan GT-R Safety

8.0/10

You won't find any of Nissan's driver-assistance features here- CarAndDriver

Just like other sports cars, the Nissan GT-R was not tested for its crashworthiness and therefore, safety ratings are not available. However, its body structure is made from a combination of aluminum and different grades of high-strength steel and thus, it can resist deformation and protect the occupants.

2022 Nissan GT-R rear driving view

Despite its high price tag, the GT-R gets very little driver-assist techs, owing to its sports car form. Therefore, don't expect many of the latest safety features in this car. The GT-R also comes standard with a suite of six airbags that can protect you from serious injuries in case of an accident. The available safety features are:

  • Rearview camera
  • Hill-Start Assist
  • Front & rear parking sensors
  • Stability & traction control

2022 Nissan GT-R vs 2022 Audi R8

The Audi R8 is one of the toughest competitors of the GT-R. Performance-wise, both the cars are head-to-head. The GT-R's cabin is a bit roomier but the R8 offers more tech and the interiors look modern too. If you are tight on budget, then go for the GT-R. But, if you are more interested in the interiors of the car and can afford the extra price then the R8 is the better option to go.

2022 Audi R8

2022 Nissan GT-R vs 2022 Acura NSX

The Acura NSX does not look as sporty but it carries a hefty price tag. Its hybrid powertrain helps to deliver brutal acceleration and also does not compromise on gas mileage. Its interior quality is disappointing while the infotainment system is frustrating to use. Also, the truck capacity is very small. All these things are better in the GT-R and therefore, it is a better option.

2022 Acura NSX

2022 Nissan GT-R vs 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo

The Porsche 911 Turbo is one of the most luxurious and stylish cars in the luxury sports car segment. The engine refinement is very good while its driving dynamics are unmatched in the segment. Inside, the 911 Turbo is more lavish, comfortable, and features lots of modern techs but the cargo space is on the short side. The 911 Turbo is a way better option if you can pay extra bucks.

2022 Nissan GT-R Final Verdict

The 2022 Nissan GT-R gives everything that you may need from a sports car with less price tag. Nissan has made a masterpiece when it comes to the engine of the car. The main problem with the car is that it is outdated and people want something new. The interior layout is old and it doesn't offer much tech. However, it still gives tough competition to its rivals.
