The market for full-size luxury sedans has been very tight for the mid-range price tier. We have the Maxima but alongside it, few popular cars have made the competition very interesting. The 2022 Nissan Maxima faces tight competition from the Chrysler 300, the Toyota Avalon, and the Dodge Charger on the list and they are no less than the Nissan.

The Platinum trim will be priced at $46,000 and it competes with the Honda Accord, the Chevrolet Impala, and the Dodge Charger.

All the trims offer a long list of great standard features. We Recommend:

If you need your aggressively designed crossover SUV to make the same great statement among your neighbors as expensive SUVs do, you go with the 2022 Nissan Maxima Platinum trim that gets almost all of the features from the SR trim but drops out the sport-tuned suspension and adds in more convenient features for a reasonable price.

Price

2022 Nissan Maxima is available in three trims exclusively- SV, SR and Platinum. SV trim will be priced at $38,000, SR at $43,000 and Platinum at $44,500. Official pricing details are yet to be announced by the manufacturer. There is also a rumored EV variant joining the trim lineup.

Release Date

The release date for the 2022 Nissan Maxima is expected to be sometime in the Q2 of this year. However, this information is not confirmed and it may vary due to the rising concerns for the global pandemic.

2022 Nissan Maxima Engine and Performance

Powering the 2022 Nissan Maxima is the same 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 engine that is seen for quite some time now. Although for the current year, an electric motor can power the Maxima alongside the V6 engine. The V6 engine is a delight on its own, with 300 horses and 261 pound-feet of torque pumping in the crank. The engine is mated to a CVT. The transmission system, however, seems a little sluggish and the gear ratios are longer which makes it take its sweet time to shift. By that, we can understand that Nissan never had the intention of making the Maxima a track-focused performance sedan but more of an everyday car.

2022 Nissan Maxima Sedan in action mode

For now, the 3.5L V6 is the only engine option available for the Maxima but that does not mean the car is slow anyway. The acceleration figures are impressive, taking just 5.7 secs to reach 60mph. The 2022 Nissan Maxima takes 14.3 seconds in the quarter-mile drag. The car comes with a sport-tuned suspension setup which makes the ride quite stiff. It does not perform well on rough patches but the driving dynamics with good steering control and handling make it shine.

The 2022 Nissan Maxima along with the current-gen Toyota Avalon and Dodge Charger puts out pretty much similar engine power leaving the Chrysler 300 at the end. But there is little to noticeable difference in terms of power and torque on paper.

2022 Nissan Maxima Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The fuel economy on the Maxima is pretty impressive and it shows that Nissan has kept the promise. In the city, the Maxima will return an average of 20 MPG and 30 MPG on the highways, 24 MPG combined, which is a decent number for a V6 engine. The fuel tank capacity stands at 18 gallons which promises a max range of 540 miles on the highway.

The fuel economy of all four cars is pretty decent with the 2021 Toyota Avalon leading the round with an impressive 32MPG on the highway. But it comes with a smaller fuel tank capacity. Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Charger are on the lower side in terms of fuel economy but come equipped with the largest fuel tanks; thus offering max driving range among the competition.

2022 Nissan Maxima Interior

6.0/10

The interior of the 2022 Nissan Maxima is expected to be similar to the previous year’s model. The cabin is beautifully laid out with the use of high-quality materials. The seats are covered in leatherette upholstery. The front seats are power-adjustable and leather upholsteries are made available. The cabin can fit up to 5 people. The headroom and legroom are decent at the front but the legroom suffers at the rear giving the rear passengers a cramped ride. The dashboard is made of high-quality plastics and is adorned with wooden accents, which adds on the luxury and has a softer and smoother feel to it.

2022 Nissan Maxima Sedan front seats

The cockpit looks fantastic and modern with a sporty steering wheel and chrome elements at the center. The infotainment system is highly functional with a lot of standard features onboard. The 8-inch screen is touch-sensitive and the infotainment can also be controlled via voice commands. The cargo capacity on offer is less and it is quite disappointing to see Nissan forgetting about the overall practicality. Some key interior highlights offered with the 2022 Nissan Maxima include:

  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustments.
  • One push ignition button.
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror.
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control both for the front and rear.
  • Full digital instrument cluster.

All the cars have almost identical cabin space with the 2021 Toyota Avalon having a pinch more legroom at the rear. Maxima has cramped rear legroom, which certainly is slightly disappointing. Apart from that, it falls back in terms of the trunk capacity side by side with the competition. At a capacity of just 14.3 cubic feet, the 2022 Nissan Maxima’s cargo space is the smallest in the competition.

2022 Nissan Maxima Exterior

6.0/10

The exterior of the Nissan Maxima is sharp, aggressive, and looks better than the competition. Although the design has become dated somehow but still looks stunning. The upcoming model could be having a design overhaul which can be more delightful to the already good-looking Maxima. The current Maxima sports sharp, all LED highlights coupled with the fairly chunky ‘V motion’ intake grille.

2022 Nissan Maxima Sedan

The angles are sharp and well designed by Nissan. The roofline gently sweeps into the tail section with attractive-looking taillights and dual exhaust cutouts. The paint finish is excellent and at the first glance, you would mistake it for any high-tier sports sedan. The car comes with 18-inch chrome alloy wheels. The ground clearance is on the lower side but is expected because of the platform.

In terms of the exterior, we think that the 2022 Nissan Maxima looks gorgeous. However, the current-gen Toyota Avalon looks quite sharp and aggressive with a lower curb weight and bigger dimensions. Charger and Chrysler 300 are bulkier and roomier but they are on the heavy side among the rivals. Some key exterior highlights offered with the 2022 Nissan Maxima include:

  • Heated mirrors with power operation and memory settings.
  • Floating roof design.
  • Dual exhaust cutouts.
  • Chrome accents on the door handle, side vents, and intake grille.
  • All-season tires wrapping the 18-inch alloy wheels.

2022 Nissan Maxima Safety

6.0/10

The overall safety quotient of the 2021 Maxima has already impressed us. The sedan gets all the safety goodies bundled in the car. Before that let’s talk about the chassis build which is excellent and expected from the Japanese manufacturer. The rigidity and stability at high speeds are unquestionably excellent; allowing it to take on corners without the excess body roll.

The safety ratings are impressive too. Both the NHTSA and the IIHS have rated the 2021 Maxima with good ratings. The 2022 model is expected to perform similarly in the crash tests. Safety features offered with the 2022 Nissan Maxima are as follows:

  • Forward Collision Warning.
  • Blind Spot Warning.
  • Pedestrian Warning.
  • Lane Departure Warning.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control.
  • Automatic Emergency Braking.
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

2022 Nissan Maxima Competition

7.0/10

2022 Nissan Maxima vs 2021 Chrysler 300

Both the Nissan Maxima and the Chrysler 300 have their distinctive pros and cons. The Maxima is ahead of the 300 in terms of performance but not luxury where the latter shines. The Chrysler offers more rear-seat room but loses on the mileage and performance front where the Maxima is so much better. The Maxima is a bit higher in cost compared to the 300.

2021 Chrysler 300

2022 Nissan Maxima vs 2021 Toyota Avalon

The Toyota Avalon is superior to the Maxima in terms of performance, fuel efficiency, interior space especially at the rear. However, the Maxima is quite the stellar performer on its own and is priced slightly less than the Avalon.

2021 Toyota Avalon

2022 Nissan Maxima vs 2021 Dodge Charger

The 2021 Dodge Charger is a creature on its own. The car has a very aggressive stance and performs similarly to the Maxima. The Maxima has better fuel efficiency for the performance it is providing but the Charger has better cargo capacity and a tad better rear-seat legroom. The price difference is not much but the Charger comes a bit cheaper than the Maxima, but compromises on some luxury elements.

2021 Dodge Charger

2022 Nissan Maxima Final Verdict

The Nissan Maxima is for individuals who are not willing to compromise on the specs which include adequate luxury, power-packed performance with no fuel compromise, elegant looks, and the list goes on. The only compromises would be the lower cargo capacity on offer and the rear-seat legroom. Apart from that, we would recommend the Maxima. The car is expected to get a design overhaul which is needed because the current design language is becoming dated for the price. The price of the Maxima is the highest, at around $34,250 and for the 2022 model year, we can expect a price bump over a few thousand dollars if they introduce visual changes. Overall, we’re fairly impressed with what the 2022 Nissan Maxima has to offer, and we would highly recommend considering it for your next purchase.
