2019 Nissan Rogue hybrid SUV Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

CARHP Editorial Updated on: April 9, 2019

Rogue nameplate will make you think of merciless character like “Xerxes” from the movie 300, although the Nissan Rogue isn’t like that. Striking a near-perfect balance between design and practicality, the Rogue is about as mainstream as it gets.

The Rogue is powered by a 2.0 liter inline 4 which produces 175 hp in conjunction to an electric motor. The cabin is well laid with upscale material and more room for people than most of the crossovers.

Nissan Rogue is among the top pics for crossover buyers and it rivals with Mitsubishi Outlander, Subaru Crosstrek and Kia Niro. While some of its rivals resort to wild styling the Niro comes with handsomely appointed cabin.

We Recommend

The Rogue Hybrid SUV is offered in two trims: SV and SL. The SV trim hits the sweet spot with optional Premium package. It offers most of the desirable features from the top SL trim without the hefty price tag. The upscale SL includes a few too many features that aren't necessary, and with those features comes a big jump in price.

2019 Nissan Rogue hybrid SUV Engine and Performance

"Comfortable, efficient and just a tad bit sporty, the 2019 Nissan Rogue looks set to continue its success as Nissan's best-selling model." - KellyBlue Book

Engine and Transmission

The Nissan Rogue hybrid uses a 2.0 liter petrol engine and an electric motor for a combined output of 176 hp. The standard Rogue is powered by a 2.5 liter powertrain which puts out 170 hp The Rogue hybrid produces ample amount of horsepower for city driving. The powertrain does not have enough grunt for strong acceleration and produces loud droning noise when pushed too hard. The off road capability is acceptable for this compact crossover.

The engine is matched with an advanced Xtronic transmission and power is routed to either the front (FWD) or all four wheels (AWD). The CVT features three modes: Normal, Sport and Eco. The Rogue Hybrid can actually run solely on electric power at low speeds and for limited distances, further improving its overall fuel-economy figures.

The Nissan rogue feels torque initially due to the electric motor but the power decreases gradually when you reach at higher speed. It takes a long 9.3 seconds to reach 60mph from standstill. The transmission is noisy when you are pushing the car to limits and not suited for highway speed.

Ride and Handling

The Nissan Rogue is powered by a 2.0 liter engine in conjunction with an electric motor which puts out 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available in all trims It is enough for city driving but don't expect a sporty response out of it. The Xtronic CVT transmission is plagued with typical rubber band effect. Its handling, though is on the softer side and makes the driver confident in its abilities.

The ride is smooth and composed over most of the surfaces. Nissan Rougue is large enough to feel spacious on the inside but also maneuverable in tight spaces with clever dimensions. The hybrid model's 176 horsepower isn't a significant boost over the non-hybrid's 170, but the immediate response supplied by the Hybrid's battery gives it crisper low-end performance from stoplights.

Braking

The braking feel in the Nissan Rogue is soft and pedal travel is long. It comes to a sudden stop form 60 mph in just 124 feet which is acceptable for this segment. The car stays stable under heavy braking but at times it is hard to judge how much braking force you are applying.

2019 Nissan Rogue hybrid SUV Fuel Economy

Nissan Rogue doesn't prioritize acceleration instead it returns pretty decent fuel economy. It can manage 33 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway with the front wheel-drive. All-wheel-drive models get 1 less mpg in the city and on the highway. These are above-average estimates for the segment. It also comes with engine Idle Start/Stop technology that can shut the engine down when you're at a stoplight and start instantaneously as you pull away. The Rogue hybrid can solely run on electric power for a short period of time further improving its fuel economy.

Seating and Comfort

Spacious and well made, the Nissan Rogue's inside is appealing with soft touch surfaces and high quality material. The leather-wrapped, fully adjustable flat-bottom steering wheel feels good in your hands. Its NASA inspired "Zero Gravity" front seats are praised for their comfort and support. The rear seats also provide an ample amount of space. Legroom and headroom is great in the first and second row, with an EZ-Flex 40/20/40-split second line seat that tilts and slides to create additional space. However, the available panoramic sunroof limits back-row headroom.

Dimension and weight

The 2019 Rogue SUV follows the design language of a crossover with strong lines, tall body and aggressive wheel's. It's "V-motion" grille with boomerang-style headlights looks prominent. The side glass is fairly tall, that is, until you reach the rearmost column where an upturned beltline makes a blind spot. Unpainted fender flares is likely a demonstration endurance ability. Sharp highlights like motion-activated power rear lift gate give the Rogue an upscale feel, as do the optional 19-inch wheels and glass moon roof .

2019 Nissan Rogue hybrid SUV Competition

Hyundai Kona Hybrid

The Hyundai Kona comes with best in class cargo capacity an MPG figures. The Hyundai certainly have better build quality than the Rogue and offers better performance. The Kona is priced much higher than the Rogue which be the deciding factor for people with tight budget. So if Practicality and Frugality is your demand, the Rogue has its nose ahead otherwise Kona is the performance champ.

Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

The Subaru Crosstrek is all wheel drive and has high ground clearance, unlike the Nissan Rogue. Surprisingly both have an identical amount of cargo capacity and interior space. The Subaru Crosstrek has an upscale interior, a ton of standard features, and decent off-road capability. However, it comes up short on cargo space and has mediocre overall performance. If you live off the tarmac then the Subaru will befit all your needs otherwise the Nissan Rogue is better to package allover at a budget price point.

Kia Niro Plug-in hybrid

The Kia Niro is a perfect example of Korean manufacturer catering to green products like Japanese Toyota Prius and American Tesla model S. It is marketed as a crossover but looks much like a grown up hatchback with low ground clearance and only front wheel drive.

The parallel hybrid powertrain of Niro integrates electric power for outstanding efficiency. The cabin is handsomely designed and comes with intuitive technology and premium features. Rogue hybrid is powered way lower than the can be deciding for most of the individuals. If you want performance than go Niro otherwise Rogue is a good alternative.

2019 Nissan Rogue hybrid SUV Final Verdict

The Nissan Rogue is terrific compact SUV, it offers tons of cargo room and long list of standard safety features. Add in decent fuel economy and a well laid cabin, and the Rogue will please most of shoppers. The Boxer engine and agile chassis makes it ideal for climbing terrains but noisy gearbox is not ideal for drivers who drive most of the time on highway.
