2019 Nissan Rogue Sport SUV Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

CARHP Editorial Updated on: November 4, 2019

The Nissan Rogue Sport is the smaller avatar of the Rogue SUV which shares the same architecture, have a smaller footprint but for less money. Striking a near-perfect balance between design and practicality, the Rogue is about as mainstream as it gets. The Rogue Sport isn't terribly quick, but it does handle nicely and its fuel economy is near best in class.

The Rogue is powered by a 2.0 liter inline 4 which produces 141 hp and mated to a 6 speed CVT. Its cabin is well laid with upscale material and more room for people than most of the crossovers.

Nissan Rogue is among the top pics for crossover buyers and it rivals with Hyundai Kona, Subaru Crosstrek and Honda HR-V. While some of its rivals resort to wild styling the Niro comes with handsomely appointed cabin.

We Recommend

We would recommend you to go with the SV trim as you get more safety and convenience features and it doesn't cost much more than the base S trim. The feature list might not be long but it will suffice for most of the users.

Engine and Transmission

The Rogue Sport is powered by a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder powertrain which puts out 141 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 147 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpm. The power is either routed to front wheels (FWD) or all the four wheels (AWD) through a continuously variable automatic transmission. Subaru crosstrek puts out the highest amount of horsepower in the competition followed by Hyundai Kona which puts out 147 hp . The Honda HR-V and Nissan Rogue are similar in terms of power output. The Hyundai Kona, Honda HR-V and Suabru croostrek undercut the Rogue Sport in terms of pricing by at least $2,000 while offering similar-ish performance stats.

Acceleration

Most of the subcompacts are sacrificing acceleration for fuel economy and same is the case with Rogue Sport. Don't expect a neck bending acceleration as it sprints to 60 mph in lethargic 10.6 seconds. The quarter mile mark takes 17.5 seconds and it is clearly inclined towards being easy to drive.

The 0-60 mpg and quarter-mile run statistics of the Nissan is at least a good 0.5 seconds slower than the competition and much more in attaining the quarter mile mark. Subaru crosstrek is the fastest among all as it takes only 9.0 seconds to reach 60 mph.

Ride and Handling

The Nissan Rogue is powered by a 2.0 liter engine which puts out 141 hp and mated to 6-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available in all trims It is enough for city driving but don't expect a sporty response out of it. The Xtronic CVT transmission is plagued with typical rubber band effect. Its handling, though is on the softer side and makes the driver confident in its abilities.

The ride is smooth and composed over most of the surfaces. Nissan Rougue is large enough to feel spacious on the inside but also maneuverable in tight spaces with clever dimensions. You will face little bit of roll while taking sharp turn oncorner. The AWD variants are more novelty than value as they just barely qualify to be an all-weather traction system let alone an AWD enabled vehicle.

Braking

The brakes are very predictable and the pedal travel is small, they are easy to modulate around town and in heavy traffic. Braking performance is acceptable for this segment and it takes 137 feet's to stop from 60 mph. Its heavy curb weight is responsible for less agility on the corners and it proves bigger in not always better.

With respect to the competition, the Nissan Rogue Sport takes most amount of time because of its higher curb weight. The rivals such as the Honda HR-V and Subaru Crosstrek are both around 400 lbs lighter and can do the same 60-0 mph halt in 127 ft and 118 ft respectively.

2019 Nissan Rogue Sport SUV Fuel Economy

The Rogue Sport comes with a peppy 141 hp four cylinder engine which is mated to a CVT transmission for optimum efficiency. The Rogue front-wheel-drive (FWD) versions puts out 25 miles per gallon in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. You can add all-wheel-drive to any Rogue Sport for $1,350. Doing so will drop the estimated mileage to 24 mpg city/30 mpg hwy. This car is clearly more inclined towards being easy to drive and fuel efficiency centric vehicle.

Seating and Comfort

Spacious and well made, the Nissan Rogue's inside is appealing with soft touch surfaces and high quality material. The leather-wrapped, fully adjustable flat-bottom steering wheel feels good in your hands. Its NASA inspired "Zero Gravity" front seats are praised for their comfort and support. The rear seats also provide an ample amount of space. Legroom and headroom is great in the first and second row, with an EZ-Flex 40/20/40-split second line seat that tilts and slides to create additional space. However, the available panoramic sunroof limits back-row headroom.

The 2019 Nissan Rogue doesn't waste much time trying too hard. We like that. It doesn't make a bad step, among compact crossovers it's a wallflower. That's not bad: Ask the Toyota C-HR about trying too hard. - Carconnection

Dimension and Weight

The 2019 Rogue SUV follows the design language of a crossover with strong lines, tall body and aggressive wheel's. It's "V-motion" grille with boomerang-style headlights looks prominent. The side glass is fairly tall, that is, until you reach the rearmost column where an upturned beltline makes a blind spot. Unpainted fender flares is likely a demonstration endurance ability. Sharp highlights like motion-activated power rear lift gate give the Rogue an upscale feel, as do the optional 19-inch wheels and glass moon roof.

2019 Nissan Rogue Sport SUV Competition

Hyundai Kona

The Hyundai Kona is one the top rated subcompacts and comes with great mpg figures. The Hyundai certainly have better build quality than the Rogue and offers better performance. The Rogue is priced much higher than the Kona which be the deciding factor for people with tight budget. Hyundai Kona has better handling and a better tech interface. So if Practicality and Frugality is your demand, the Rogue has its nose ahead otherwise Kona is the performance champ.

2019 Hyundai Kona
2019 Hyundai Kona

Honda HR-V

The Honda HR-V and Rogue Sport match up well in most of the areas. The Honda HR-V too features a lackluster engine like the Rogue Sport but it still does relatively better than the latter. The cabin space is much better in the Honda HR-V, no other car in the segment can beat the utility and ergonomics on the Honda. The HR-V is also a bit quicker and more fuel-efficient than the Rogue Sport. The Nissan have much appealing exterior design. . All in all, both vehicles make for a fair case and the buyer will just have to decide on what he prefers more.

2019 Honda HR-V
2019 Honda HR-V

Subaru Cross trek

The Subaru Crosstrek is all wheel drive and has high ground clearance, unlike the Nissan Rogue. Surprisingly both have an identical amount of cargo capacity and interior space. The Subaru Crosstrek has an upscale interior, a ton of standard features, and decent off-road capability. However, it comes up short on cargo space and has mediocre overall performance. If you live off the tarmac then the Subaru will befit all your needs otherwise the Nissan Rogue is better to package allover at a budget price point.

2019 Nissan Rogue Sport SUV Final Verdict

The Nissan Rogue is terrific compact SUV, it offers tons of cargo room and long list of standard safety features. Add in decent fuel economy and a well laid cabin, and the Rogue will please most of shoppers. The performace is average but it offers a compelling array of available safety, driver-assist and connectivity technologies..
