Big trucks are all the rage these days but Nissan has been finding it hard to make a noticeable dent in the sales when it comes to this segment. Well, that has not kept Nissan from bringing in some updated workhorses to stir up the market. The 2022 Nissan Titan would be the first of those from Nissan’s stable which is expected to enter the market later this year. Nissan has pointed out that the main focus for the coming year would be the cabin's comfort and convenience with features like Zero-gravity seats, 9-inch standard touchscreen, and improved driver-assistance tech being the standout features mentioned.

 As standard, the 2022 Nissan Titan will come with a naturally aspirated V8 that is coupled to the same 9-speed auto gearbox as seen in the previous model year. Even though the truck is set to go through a considerable upgrade, sources say that the base prices would hover around the $37,000 mark, which is just a $1,000 increase from the previous model year. At this price tag, the Tian would find sharing market space with the mighty Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, and Toyota Tundra.

2022 Nissan Titan King Cab Features

Nissan is expected to bring in the updated 2022 Titan in both the King cab and the Crew cab body styles. While the King Cab is restricted to just S and SV trims, the 4-color crew cab is made available in an extensive S, SV, PRO-4X, and Range Topping Platinum Reserve trim. While the King Cab line upstarts are expected to start at around $37,450, the Crew Cab will fare out to be a bit dearer at $40,100 base price. Also, it would be worth noting that the PRO-4X is the only trim that comes with AWD from the factory and the rest of the line-up gets it as a $3250 option.

The standard S variant of the King Cab will start at around $37,450 and the SV trim will push the base pricing to about $41,190. The prices quoted are that of the base cars and additions of option cars easily push the prices to a higher bracket. A 9-inch infotainment screen, a 7-inch advanced driver assist display and an upgraded Nissan Safety Shield 360 system are expected to come in as standard fitment. 18-inch machine-finished alloy wheels, body-colored bumpers, LED tail lights, interior mood lighting, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and intelligent cruise control are features reserved for the SV trim.

Which trim should you buy?

Given that the Titan King cab model is restricted to just two trims, we suggest that you go for the fully kitted out SV trim instead of the base S variant. In addition to the features mentioned above, the SV also comes packing interior mood lighting, front tow hooks, heated power outside mirrors, and a better finish overall. The $3,000 or so jump in base pricing is fully justified with what it has on offer over the base trim. Selecting between the RWD and the AWD configuration completely relies on personal preference and utility. The slightly lower fuel economy figures are something to keep in mind when shopping for the AWD variants.

2022 Nissan Titan King Cab Release date

Primary sources show that the truck would be premiering sometime in the second half of this year. If that is the case, sales should commence by the tail end of 2021 with deliveries expected throughout the first quarter of 2022.

2022 Nissan Titan King Cab Engine and Performance

The new Nissan Titan will come planted with the same massive 5.6L naturally aspirated V8. It is rated for a good 400hp and puts down a rather impressive 413-pound foot of torque as well. Coupling the engine and the driveshaft would be the sweet 9-speed automatic transmission. It is in no way the quickest shifting or the most responsive units out there, but the transition between ratios is one the smoothest. When the paces are low, it shifts through the cogs quite effortlessly with no perceivable jerks in between. But when you need a quick move on, there seems to be a bit of fumbling around before settling into the right ratio.

Talking about numbers, since the truck is expected to carry over most of the mechanicals, expect the 0 to 60 timings to be in the early 6’s. Given the right conditions and considering the added weight that the new truck might carry we expect the 0-60 runs to be around 6.4, which is a fraction of a second slower than the current model. As for the top speeds, it is expected to remain the same at around 110 mph, if someone’s interested. Also with a rated towing capacity of about 9,310 pounds and payload of 1,610 pounds chances of you finding it underpowered are pretty low.

On paper, when compared to the competition, the 2022 Nissan Titan may feel like it holds an undue advantage over them when it comes to the raw output numbers. But in reality, that is not the case. The 5,500-pound machine barely manages to beat the competition with far less rated power outputs. The Ford was the most surprising, posting a 0-60 time of just 6.6 seconds which is just a striking distance away from the 6.4 and 6.5 timings recorded by the Titan and Tundra respectively. Also, the towing capacity of 9,310lbs is lower compared to the Tundra’s 10,200lbs limit while the Silverado and F-150 regular cab peak out at 7,900lbs and 5,000lbs respectively in the compared trims.

How well does the 2022 Nissan Titan handle?

There is no denying the fact that this is one of the heaviest trucks around and you surely feel the heft while driving this truck. Nissan has done their best to make it feel as relaxing as it possibly can get and from our experience with the current generation truck, it has worked out to a certain extent. There is a satisfying heft to the steering even past highway speeds and it does feel planted all the time.

There is no real hiding from the weight as the body tends to roll when you enter a corner hot. It is not unnerving by any means but the suspension could certainly have been calibrated better. Also, there is a noticeable amount of pitching action to the body when you accelerate or brake hard, something that might rob you of some confidence. In all, we did not find anything outstanding here and would rate the overall agility as more or less, middle of the road.

Bringing a 5,450-pound machine to a complete halt is not a very easy task especially when the braking hardware ranks average at best. Based on our experience with the current model year, the 13.8-inch front rotor coupled with the 13.6-inch rear rotor brings this behemoth to a complete halt in under 134 feet. The brakes do feel spongy and there is a considerable amount of force that is to be applied. You can also feel the anti-lock systems kicking in. There is a considerable amount of nosedive and if speeds are any higher, emergency braking could feel a bit unnerving.

The braking performance of the new Nissan Titan is expected to fall in line with the best. The overall braking distance did surprise us with just 5 feet separating it from the best despite having almost 1,500 additional pounds to carry. Ford manages the best distance of 129 ft. thanks to the lower curb weight. The Tundra also managed to come to a halt in under 135 which is impressive for the weight. The Silverado, despite having a considerable weight advantage, did take a bit longer to stop when compared to the heavyweight here.

Big V8s and fuel economy figures are two things that never go hand in hand and that is the case we expect with the 2022 Titan as well. With all those 5.6 liters of displacement galloping gasoline-like nothing else, expect the fuel economy figures to drop as low as 16mpg inside the city. The best-claimed figure is 21 mpg and when you start using it in mixed driving conditions, which everyone does, expect the figures to hover around the 18mpg mark. Also, the 26-gallon fuel tanks sit at the base when it comes to capacity, and the best range you could squeeze out of it if everything falls in favor is just 546 miles.

The 2022 Nissan Titan and the Tundra for that matter, are at a solid disadvantage here given they do not come with any other engine configuration. The higher displacement has really affected their overall fuel economy figures, especially the Tundra which has to deal with an older 6-speed transmission. Even though the F15- snatches the crown when it comes to the individual economy figures, the Silverado hits back with its huge 28.3-gallon fuel tank which extends its range to a whopping 679.2 miles on the highways.

Interiors are one place that the 2022 Nissan Titan is expected to receive a major overhaul. Although the basic layout would remain more or less similar to what we have on offer now, there seems to be a convincing uplift in the features package and seating comfort. A 9.0-inch touchscreen will replace the current 8.0-inch unit and it will support all kinds of phone connectivity features from the factory. The 2022 Titan will also be getting the Zero gravity front seats with promises of better bolstering, contouring, and cushioning thereby increasing the driving comfort. 40.9 inches of legroom ensures that you are getting the class-leading front knee room.

Apart from the updates, the cabin will include a host of equipment including an advanced 7-inch driver information display, remote keyless entry with push-button start, illuminated vanity mirrors, and even an interior mood lighting system. Being only available in the extended cabin version, the 2022 Titan would also offer back seats with 38.7 inches of legroom which is one of the best in class. Also, when it comes to utility, the King Cab variant of the Titan holds around 1610 pounds in the rear loading bed.

Since 2022 would only be available as an extended cab even in the base trim, it boasts one of the best legroom in this comparison with about 41 inches to spare. The F-150 and the Silverado follow close by with 40.8 and 40.03 inches of space. The Tundra trails behind the competitions with just 39.7 inches of legroom on offer in the front. That said, the F-150 and the Silverado stampedes over the competition when it comes to shoulder room and headroom, something which the 2022 Titan will trail behind in. The 2022 Nissan Titan is all set to receive an updated 9 inch Nissan Connect touch screen infotainment system coupled to a six-speaker standard audio system. The system will boost support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Voice commands which support a hands-free phone system and text messaging assistant come in as standard. Two USB ports are provided at the front for phone connectivity. Illuminated steering mounted audio controls also come in as part of factory equipment.

We do not expect the 2022 Nissan Titan to come with a massive exterior make-over. Nissan is expected to stick to the “Powerful warrior” silhouette, probably tweaking some minor elements to keep it afresh. The huge and imposing three-slat grille is here to stay with some big and bright halogen headlamps adorning its ends.

The skid plate-like silver (chrome) trim rising from the lower portion of the bumper in between the fog lights gives this Nissan a proper rugged look from the front. The 18-inch split wheels do match the truck’s character and lend it the right proportions. The rear end design is not as busy as the front but compliments it rather well.

The 2022 Nissan titan is easily the heaviest truck in this comparison and also the biggest visually. But when it comes to the actual wheelbase, it falls short of the Tundra and Silverado with just 139.8 inches separating the two axles. Also, despite having one of the most powerful engines in this comparison, the payload on the Titan is lowest at 1610 pounds. This might be due to the fact that it is only available as an extended cabin but with a rated 2060 pound capacity, the Silverado does give the competition a run for their money. Since the forthcoming model year of the Nissan Titan is expected to share the underpinnings with the current generation truck, we expect it to perform similarly when it comes to the crash safety aspects. On that, the current generation truck managed to score an overall good on all crash tests by the IIHS except for the passenger side overlap test, where it only managed to come out as marginal. 

Also, the headlamp performance was rated poorly as well. The NHTSA is yet to test the king cab variant but the Crew cabin trim which is more or less similar in structure managed a 4-star rating from them too. The Ford F-150 has been one of those trucks that has been the reigning king of this segment for quite some time now and that is for a reason. With the most lavish array of engine configurations and trims, there is an F-150 for everyone. Also, the majority of the people won’t need a gas-guzzling V8 under the hood of their truck and are willing to sacrifice the performance for better fuel economy and lower pricing. That is where the Nissan Titan falls short of the F-150 leaving absolutely no reason to choose it over the Ford.

Just like the F-150, the lower pricing, better fuel economy, and better practicality make the Chevrolet Silverado a preferable choice over the Nissan Titan. But if you are someone who likes a bit more kitted out and powerful truck but is unwilling to pay the wild prices for a V8 Chevy, then the Nissan Titan would make sense for you.

The only factors separating the Toyota Tundra and the Nissan Titan are the pricing and the fuel economy figures. They are pretty evenly matched when it comes to the rest of the staff and trades blows all the way. So if you are looking at keeping the purchase costs low and would love to have stress-free ownership, the Tundra is yours to keep. If it’s both power and economy that you want at one, the 2022 Titan will suffice your needs.

2022 Nissan Titan King Cab Final Verdict

Bringing in a truck with just one engine option is not the most sensible thing to do, at least in our opinion. When competitors are offering you a plethora of ways to configure your truck from the factory, we see no reason why one should go with Nissan’s limited choices. Also, for people looking for something economical and daily usable, the Titan King Cab just does not make sense with that gas-guzzling V8. Also, with base prices starting significantly higher than the competition, we find the 2022 Titan to be a tough pill to swallow.
