2017 Nissan Versa Note Hatchback Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Over the years Nissan Versa It is one of the most affordable hatchbacks you are going to find in today's car market. This 5-door 5-seater hatchback is a perfect ride for daily family use, long trip rides, or doing anything that does not concern speed, performance, sporty handling or quality.

The Note S plus is the standard variant of Versa Note series with three different trim levels. The standard S plus features a 109hp engine with CVT automatic transmission. It looks a bit like a van due to its small bonnet, curvy nose and high body height. There is not anything special about this but it has good fuel economy, large cargo, seating capacity and low cost of ownership and it works.

The 2017 Nissan Versa is currently competing against Toyota Yaris 5, Ford Fiesta S and Honda Fit LX and it is actually having tough competition in its class.

We Recommend

When it comes to looks, the SR variant is the best in the class but features the same engine which is the drawback. The S plus is offering way less for its price whereas the SV variant with a cost $16,380 is way better in features and has a suitable price and also is the only variant that comes with four different packages which improve its comfort and functionality.

2017 Nissan Versa Note Hatchback Engine

7.1/10

With a meager 109-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, nontraditional transmission and uninspiring handling, the Versa Note offers little in terms of performance. -Edmunds

Engine & Transmission

The Nissan Versa Note comes standard with a 1.6L 4-cylinder DOHC engine with CVT automatic transmission and front-wheel drivetrain. This 109 hp engine produces 107 lb.-ft. of torque. In terms of power, acceleration this engine is not the best but being less aggressive improves its fuel economy and makes it more reliable and needs low maintenance.

The Note S does not feature the best engine in the class, as the Ford Fiesta and Honda Fit are way ahead but it has better powerhouse than Toyota Yaris. The Honda Fit LX features a 130 hp engine and has the best in class powerhouse for an additional $600 than the Versa Note S.

The Nissan featuring a CVT automatic and a 109hp engine gets from 0-60 mph in 9.9 sec and hits the quarter mile in 17.6 sec. Well, obviously it is not impressive but we are talking about an affordable and versatile family hatchback so performance does not priorities at all.

Acceleration

Unsurprisingly, the Fit LX leads the segment followed by the Fiesta and Nissan putting Toyota at the last. The Honda could have performed better for a 130hp engine but again performance is not the priority.

Ride and Handling

The Note S is not the best when it comes to driving or ride comfort. And the base model does not even feature cruise control. The Note S comes standard with a tilt-only steering wheel with power steering and has front independent suspension. The engine is not powerful so the front-wheel drive works fine and car does not oversteers or goes haywire when accelerating hard.

Its electric steering works fine but is a bit Laggy. When it comes to day to day driving, cursing in traffic, or going for a ride it rules but in case you want to cut sharp corners, fast overtakes or precise maneuver through traffic you are in the wrong vehicle. The Note S is an average driving car that gets the work done anything above then that is out of its league.

Braking

Taking 127 feet to come to a standstill, the hatch is average in brake performance, while its competitors sit around the same position. Honda is the only hatch which perfoms better than the rest, stopping in 118 feet.

2017 Nissan Versa Note Hatchback Fuel Economy

The Note S has the best in class fuel economy, offering an average mileage of 31/39 mpg in city/highway with a combined mileage of 34 mpg. Well, it's less powerful underperformed engine sure pays off. The Yaris also shows some impressive fuel economy whereas the Fiesta S stays way behind.

2017 Nissan Versa Note Hatchback Interior

8.7/10

A few clever and unexpected measures offset the usual subcompact interior qualities and drawbacks. The Versa Note SV's materials are notably better than those on the lower trim levels, but they're not much better than average for the segment. -Edmunds

Seating & Comfort

The Note S is a 4-door 5-seater hatchback. In terms of looks, quality, comfort or features it does not have much to offers but long story short it gets the work done. The S plus variant especially offers way less than its price. It features an odd looking tilt-only, 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel with premium cloth upholstery finish with hard plastic dash and doors interiors.

It features Bucket front seats with 4-way manual drivers seats and 4-way passenger seat for the S Plus variant. It has split folding rear seats without a folding center armrest and rear ventilation. In terms of interior features, this car suffers a lot especially the S plus variant. The center console features all the necessary control keeping everything in one hand reach.

The Note S has nothing much to offer for its infotainment system as well. You don't even get the option to upgrade or increase the functionality of tte standard infotainment system unless you get SV variant.

Cargo Space

The Versa offers a standard boot space of 18.8 cubic foot which can be further increased up to 38.3 cubic foot after folding the rear seats. Being a hatchback has a big rear opening which enables it to take bigger and heavier cargo with ease. The LX has best in class cargo volume followed by Nissan and Ford.

8.4/10

In terms of looks and designing the Note S does not offer much but it sure looks stylish. The multi-reflector halogen lamps with Nissan standard grille and chrome finish gives it a sportier front profile. Its sleek body design, sharp edges and low bonnet makes it more aerodynamic. Compared to the S variant the SR variant is way more aggressive and sportier looking car.

The Note S in 163.7 inches long and 66.7 inches wide with a body height of 60.5 inches. Its high body height than a standard hatchback enable a lot of headroom and wider body increases interior space and cargo volume as well. It has a ground clearance of 5.1 inch which suits the body height and completed the purpose of being an all-rounder.

2017 Nissan Versa Note Hatchback Competition

Nissan Versa Note vsinches Honda Fit

The Honda Fit LX is a 5-seater hatchback, with pretty much same body design than the Note S. This $16,090 hatchback features best in the class 130 hp engine with CVT transmission. The Honda LX only offers a little less fuel efficiency than the Note S other than it has better performance, handling comfort, storage, interior space, features and has more options.

In simple terms, the Honda Fit is way better than the Note S for only an additional $600, which gives it a huge advantage.

Nissan Versa Note vs Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta S hatchback is a very handsome looking car featuring a 120 hp engine with a price tag of only $14,505. The Fiesta S is a smaller compared to the Note S but is way better performing car. The Fiesta actually has better fan following and has better ratings than the Note S. It might lack cargo space and interior spacing compared to the Note S but it is still a hatchback.

Being more affordable, it has enough cargo space, interior spacing has good fuel efficiency, powerful engine and better handling than the Note S offers which really makes it superior.

2017 Nissan Versa Note Hatchback Final Verdict

The Note S is an affordable hatchback that fulfills all the requirement for a daily life family car. It has a lot of flaws but some major advantages such as low cost of ownership, fuel efficiency, cargo space, capacious interiors and satisfactory powerhouse makes up for them. Its true that there is not much this car can offer but what you are getting is worth every penny.

Whether its daily use, professional use, long drives, camping, roads trips or picnics the Note S got your back. It is not just affordable, it is reliable, durable and perfect for long term use or new drivers. In case you are going for the Versa Note, go for the SV variant cause the price and the features it offers, it is the best option in the market.
