2019 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS Convertible Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

CARHP Editorial Updated on: October 14, 2019

Speaking of the engine, it’s the same one people were used to on the Boxster S model. Now, that engine made an impressive 350 horsepower and 309 lb.-ft. torque. So the addition of the initials ‘GT’ ahead of the ‘S’ had to be for something, right? Right! The GTS sets the 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine into a different state of tune. This engine makes 365 hp and 317 lb.-ft. torque that makes the already quick 718 Boxster S all the more nimble.

So the addition of the initials ‘GT’ ahead of the ‘S’ had to be for something, right? Right! The GTS sets the 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine into a different state of tune. There are about as many competitors of the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS as there were enemies of the Spartans. And just like those Spartans, the Boxster GTS doesn’t bow down to any single one of them. It handles like a dream, is fun to drive and also offers that sophisticated soft-top convenience. It is overall an above average offering from legendary car maker Porsche. In fact, it could easily be one of the greatest choices in the roadster lineup.

2019 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS Convertible Features

The Porsche 718 Boxster GTS bridges the gap that lay in between the slightly slouched Boxster variants and the magnificent 911. On the plus side, it manages to do so at a fairly affordable price. It has a finely-tuned version of the Boxster S engine which makes 365 hp and 317 lb.-ft. torque.

We recommend:

The Boxster GTS justifies why is it worth the few additional bucks that you will be willing to spend over the Boxster or Boxster S variants. The standard manual transmission is quite charming, and the PDK transmission will return better performance. Paired with the Sport Chrono package, adaptive suspension, sport seats and a mechanical rear differential with a brake-actuated torque vectoring system, the Boxster GTS is an excellent choice.

2019 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS Convertible Engine and Performance

You have three engine choices in Boxster. All three are turbocharged four-cylinder, and they put out 300, 350 and 365 horsepower. This Porsche accelerates quickly and feels powerful with any engine, but the two most powerful turbo-fours take things to a new level. ” Car.USNews

Engine and Transmission

The Porsche 718 Boxster comes with three different engine options none of which are slow or underpowered. What separates the GTS from the rest of the lineup though is that at 365 hp and 309 lb.-ft. torque, the 2.5-liter turbo-4 engine feels just that much more eager to perform.

The power bump in the GTS’s engine has been achieved by fine-tuning the engine with an optimised and revised intake duct which helps boost power. Consequently, there is also an increase in torque.

The engine is available as standard with a 6-speed manual gearbox, but can be mated to Porsche’s seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Both transmissions power only the rear wheels of the Boxster GTS, and even though the manual is plenty fast and satisfying, the automatic transmission is even faster.

Acceleration

The engine on the Boxster GTS is ridiculously fast. Peak torque kicks in at as low as 1,900 rpm and the power is spread evenly throughout the powerband. The Boxster GTS’s punchy low-end, an exciting mid-range and thrilling top-end accelerates this roadster past the 60 mph mark in under 4 seconds!

Braking

The Porsche 718 Boxster GTS is the quickest of all cars in this comparison, not only when it comes to accelerating, but also when its about stopping on a dime. The firm brake pedal establishes almost a proportional relationship between pedal pressure and stopping force. As a result, the Boxster GTS manages to stop in just 99 feet from a speed of 60 mpg.

Ride and Handling

Old Porsche aficionados may be judgemental about the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS electronically assisted steering wheel, but do not let that make any difference to how you will feel behind it. The steering is as sharp and precise as can be in a roadster. In fact, it’s so direct that the wheels follow wherever the steering goes.

The GTS benefits greatly from its mid-engine layout which balances the weight of the Boxster to keep it stable in corners. The tyres hold on to the tarmac as if they were covered in Super Glue. Overall, the Boxster GTS with Porsche’s adaptive suspension (PASM) and assisted steering wheel behaves exactly the way one would want it to.

2019 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS Convertible Fuel Economy

The reason why you would want to buy a Porsche 718 Boxster GTS is either because of the way it looks or the way it drives. It isn’t wise to expect a car to be powerful and economical at the same time. Although this is where the GTS really shines through.

At a combined EPA rating of 21 miles per gallon, the Boxster GTS generates better fuel economy than most other competitors. It may not be best in class, but it’s gonna get you where you want to go a lot faster than the others while only being a couple of bucks more expensive.

Seating and Comfort

The Boxster GTS’s 20-inch wheels and low ride height make the car feel a little bumpy. That being said, you’ll hardly find seats on any other car that are more comfortable than the ones on the GTS. They do have firm and slightly tight bolsters, but the built-in lumbar support does a phenomenal job of countering the effects of the sport-tuned suspension.

2019 Porsche 718 Boxter Interior

The interior does have a little more than usual use of plastic considering it costs a shade over $80,000, but additional leather is available at a fair price of $500. A CD player, navigation, 4G LTE Wi-FI and Apple CarPlay are standard in the cabin. However, AndroiAuto is unavailable still.

Cargo Volume

Before speaking of boot space in the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS, there are a couple of things to consider. Firstly, the driver, and secondly, the person riding shotgun. What’s the take? It is the fact that the cabin on this small GTS is big enough to seat only 2 people. So naturally there isn’t a lot of space in the car in general. Hence, the small trunk of the Boxster GTS which offers 9.7 cubic feet of space. It is small though not too small. In fact, it is better than a lot of other cars.

Dimensions and Weight

The Porsche 718 Boxster GTS sports a lightweight chassis with a mid-engine design to perfectly balance the overall weight of the car. At just a touch over 3000 pounds, it isn’t too wieldy.

Design and Styling

The 2019 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS delivers mean performance, and it has definitely been designed to look the part. It does away with the rounded edges of its predecessor and now sports much sharper lines which also make the car more aerodynamic.

The 718 GTS is now more intimidating than before. It hardly looks like an “entry-level” sports car from the much esteemed car manufacturer Porsche. There’s no two thoughts about the Boxster GTS being one of the most attractive sports-car design Porsche has come up with till now.

2019 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS Convertible Safety

The 2019 Porsche 718s have not yet been tested for crashes officially, but high-end sports cars are rarely thrown into walls. The safety equipment on the Boxster GTS features the following:

  • Front, side and thorax airbags
  • Electronic stability control
  • Traction control
  • ABS
  • Parking aid
  • Tyre pressure monitor
  • Back-up camera
  • Daytime running lights

2019 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS Convertible Competition

2019 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS vs BMW Z4

The BMW Z4 faces tough competition from the Boxster GTS. Both are more or less similar in proportions. The Z4 sports a 3.0-liter engine as compared to the GTS’s 2.5-liter turbo-4, but that does not mean it can outform the GTS. The GTS is a good 0.5 seconds faster than the Z4 to the 60 mph mark. In fact, it handles much better than the Z4 while being incredibly comfortable.

2019 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS vs Audi TT-S

The TT is one hell of a looker. In fact, it makes more power than the GTS. The GTS with its sharp looks and redefined suspension promises serious potential, but the TT just looks awesome and its four-wheel-drive is more eager than the GTS’s rear-wheel drive.

2019 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS Convertible Final Verdict

The 2019 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS is a quick and agile little roadster which is pretty upscale and comfortable at the same time. It’s a car that offers unparalleled functionality, blazing performance and dynamic handling. It does a great job of narrowing the gap between porsche’s entry-level offering and the legendary 911 despite its small size. It is undoubtedly the best Boxster yet.
