The Porsche 718 Boxster shares lots of similarities with its sibling Cayman such as chassis components and other parts, but unlike Caymen’s hardtop, the 718 Boxster has a soft top and different rear design. There are five trims available on the regular 2022 Porsche 718 Boxster Convertible trim range, where the base price starts at $62,600 and the 25th Anniversary trim costs $100,101.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 comes with the 4.0L naturally aspirated engine which is coupled to a standard 6-speed manual transmission which is a rare setup in the convertible sports car segment. From exterior design to the comfortable interior, the 718 GTS 4.0 does not fail to impress. It goes against mammoths like BMW Z4Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63, and Jaguar F-Type.

2022 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS Convertible Features

The 2022 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 is a standalone trim, sitting as the second top tier trim after the 25th-anniversary edition trim in the complete Boxster lineup. The 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 is powered by a naturally aspirated boxer-6 engine. The base price of the GTS 4.0 starts at 89,500 which includes the processing fee as well. The RWD and the 6-speed manual transmission are standard.

The 2022 GTS 4.0 comes with standard features such as 20-inch sport wheels, two exhaust pipes, dual-zone climate control, Green tinted heat-insulating glass, heated front sport seats, Auto-Dimming Mirrors with Integrated Rain Sensor, front and rear park assist, 6-speaker sound system, 7-inch touchscreen, SiriusXM, and 4.6-inch driver information display.

There are a number of optional features available on the 2022 Boxster GTS 4.0 which will increase the price tag significantly. The Premium Package available on this sports car costs $3,500 and includes Bose surround sound system, heated steering wheel, Porsche entry and drive which gives keyless access and ignition, LED headlights, and more.

We Recommend

The GTS 4.0 is the top-end trim that not only encompasses all the features available on the Boxster lineup but also gives better performance as compared to other trims in the lineup. Although the 25th Anniversary edition is nearly the same in terms of features and differs mostly in terms of appearance. Therefore with the difference of $10,600, the 2022 Boxster GTS 4.0 is a better pick.

2022 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS Convertible Engine and Performance

As the name suggests itself, 4.0 means that a 4.0 Liter engine is offered on the 718 Boxster GTS. This 4.0 liter naturally aspirated engine is mated to a standard 6-speed manual transmission and churns out 394 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque. The RWD is standard throughout the 718 Boxster lineup. You can also avail the optional PDK transmission for $3,730. With the top speed of the GTS on track of 182 mph, Porsche beats every rival in the segment and will give you a gut-punching driving experience

With the standard manual transmission, GTS sprints from 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds, but if you choose the PDK transmission, it will take half a second less for the same goal. However, the top speed on the track will be reduced by 3 mph. If we talk about the drive, the GTS fulfills your sports car experience with its high stability and smooth acceleration. The 2022 GTS is easy to turn even around sharp corners, and the steering maneuverability is not something one can find faults in.

The Porsche is praiseworthy for its driving capabilities, but it has to give up the convertible sports car with the quickest acceleration title to the BMW which finishes the 0-60 mph limit in 0.5 seconds quicker than Porsche. With the most powerful 4.0 Liter Biturbo engine, Mercedes-Benz threatens every car in the competition but it is hesitant towards the BMW, as it completes the 0-60 mp, 0.2 seconds later than the BMW. That said, even though Jaguar has better torque and slightly less power than the Porsche, it finishes the 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds as the slowest car in the bunch.

2022 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS Convertible Fuel Economy

There are no EPA estimates available for the 2022 GTS 4.0 on the official Porsche website, but we expect it will give the nearly same economic figures as the AMG C 63. The fuel capacity of the GTS 4.0 is 16.9 gallons, which is 3.2 gallons more than the M40i that has the smallest fuel tank, although it is smaller than what the other two rivals in the segment offer.

Range (City/Highway/Combined, in Miles)

The most fuel-efficient sports car in the competition is the M40i which returns the fuel economy of 22/30/25 mpg in city/highways/combined. However, it has the smallest fuel tank in the competition that reduces the range by a decent margin. The most thirsty engine belongs to the AMG C 63, while the R-dynamic has just one mpg more in every category of fuel economy as compared to the AMG C 63, but it has the biggest fuel tank that gives better range than any other car in the segment.

2022 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS Convertible Interior

The ergonomics of the GTS 4.0 are great. The GT Sport Steering Wheel is covered in Race-Tex material and has a nice feel to it. The pedals and footrest have a sporty style to them. The Sporty Plus seats have 2-way adjustments and are more comfortable than the base seats, but you can get the optional adaptive Sport plus seats or power Sport seats which give more adjustment and memory function. The cabin can fit people of any body type or weight which makes it more convenient. The cabin might not be the most practicable one in the segment but frunk has more usable storage than 911.

The leather and Race-Tex upholstery is standard and comes in black color, but you can get other optional colors as well. The seats are heated but also come with optional ventilation. Some other standard features include Green tinted heat-insulating glass, dual-zone climate control, Homelink garage door opener, auto-dimming rearview mirror, manual tilt and telescopic steering wheel, one 12-volt power outlet, On-board computer, 4.4-inch TFT display, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shifter, brushed aluminum trim, floor mats, and two cup holders.

Seating Capacity

Front Row (Headroom/Shoulder Room/Leg Room, in inches)

Rear Row (Headroom/Shoulder Room/Leg Room, in inches)

Trunk Capacity (cubic feet)

There are no official figures for the interior dimensions from the Porsche, so it is not possible to accurately compare it with the rivals. However, if we look at the cargo or trunk capacity, BMW has the lead, while the smallest trunk is offered by Jaguar. Porsche, on the other hand, has just 0.3 cu-ft less cargo capacity than the BMW. That said, Mercedes-Benz has a cargo capacity of 8.8 cu-ft, which is 1.5 cu-ft more than the Jaguar. Key highlights of the interior are:

  • Leather and Race-Tex upholstery
  • Heated seats with optional ventilation
  • Heated steering wheel (optional)
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Keyless entry and ignition (optional)
  • Manual tilt and telescopic steering wheel
  • Homelink garage door opener

How intuitive is the car’s infotainment unit?

The 2022 GTS 4.0 has a 7-inch infotainment screen that is simple and easy to use. There is Apple CarPlay integration given, but sadly Android users will be disappointed as there is no Android Auto integration offered. Some other standard features include SiriusXM, two USB ports, a CD/DVD player, HD radio, Bluetooth, and voice control. The 6-speaker sound system is standard, but you can upgrade it to a 10-speaker Bose surround sound system or a 12-speaker Burmester premium surround sound system. Key highlights of the infotainment unit are:

  • 7-inch touchscreen
  • Navigation system (optional)
  • 6-speaker sound system
  • Apple CarPlay
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • 12-speaker Burmester premium surround sound system (optional)
  • Smartphone Compartment (optional)

2022 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS Convertible Exterior

The GTS 4.0 gets trim-specific SportDesign front and rear fascia in Satin Black. The Bi-Xenon headlights and daytime running lights are standard, but with the Premium Package, you can get the LED headlights. This package also changes the daytime running light setup. The side profile is really sleek and sharp which raises the beauty of this mid-engine sports car to the next level. At the top, you get a high-quality soft top that is black in color, but you can pick other optional colors as well. The backside looks different from the big brother Cayman. It has blacked-out LED lights and two-sport exhaust pipes in High Gloss Black which are slightly outboard to give a hunky appearance to the GTS 4.0.

The auto-deploying rear wing can automatically extend and retract. The 2022 GTS 4.0 runs on 20-inch satin black sports wheels, but you can select the optional 20-inch 911 turbo wheels or 20-inch Carrera sports wheels. The 2022 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 has the Porsche Active Suspension Management which gives a drop of 20 mm. The GTS 4.0 is flat underneath which gives more aero stability.

Wheelbase (inches)

If we compare Porsche with its rivals, it is the smallest convertible while Mercedes-Benz is the biggest one in the competition. The BMW offers the smallest wheelbase and length which will give it agility and a lower turning radius. The Jaguar sits in between Porsche and Mercedes-Benz in most of the exterior dimensions. That said, Porsche has the least height which will give less air resistance while the Mercedes-Benz is the tallest one in the competition. Key highlights of the exterior are:

  • 20-inch satin black sports wheels
  • Bi-Xenon headlights
  • LED headlights (optional)
  • LED auxiliary light units in the front fascia
  • Automatically extending rear wing
  • Grey top tint on the windshield
  • Two exhaust outlets

2022 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS Convertible Safety

High-end luxury cars are generally not tested by the agencies like NHTSA and IIHS, therefore, there are no safety ratings available for the 2022 718 Boxster GTS 4.0. However, it does have standard features like cruise control, front and rear park assist, anti-theft system, ABS, electronic stability and traction control, and other basic features. By paying extra bucks, you can also get lane change assist and adaptive cruise control. The highlights of the safety features are:

  • Tire pressure monitor
  • Cruise control
  • Engine immobilizer
  • Front and rear park assist
  • Adaptive cruise control (optional)
  • Lane change assist (optional)

2022 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS Convertible Competition

2022 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 Vs 2021 BMW Z4 sDrive M40i

Porsche produces more horsepower than the BMW, but the table turns since BMW has more torque under its belt. BMW is also faster in terms of acceleration, but if we look at the top speed, Porsche has 17 mph more than the BMW. However, with a slightly bigger trunk and a lower price tag, the 2022 BMW Z4 M40i seems like a more feasible option.

2022 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 Vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Cabriolet

Mercedes-Benz has higher power figures and quicker acceleration but weighs 1,100 lbs more than the Porsche. That said, Porsche has a bigger trunk and smaller exterior dimension which allows better handling. However, Porsche still costs more than the Mercedes-Benz which can fit two more passengers. At last, the choice remains with you as to what you want from your car.

2022 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 Vs 2021 Jaguar F-type R-dynamic

Jaguar is the only convertible with the AWD in the competition, while Porsche has RWD just like other cars in the segment. But just having AWD and better torque did not help the Jaguar in possessing the fast acceleration. It does have a bigger fuel tank as compared to the Porsche which provides a better range. Since there is not a marginal difference in price between the two, the competition is tough.

2022 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS Convertible Final Verdict

There is no doubt that the 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 is an excellent choice if you want a jaw-dropping exterior design, classy interior, a more practical frunk, great road handling, impressive performance, and a number of features. However, the total options worth about $18,000 and an already higher price tag as compared to rivals puts the mood down. However, if you are not tight on budget, want a convertible sports car that excels in nearly every area, and offers a high degree of customization, then take the 2022 GTS 4.0 home. Otherwise, if you want to take it easy on your pockets, then the 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 Cabriolet is the best alternative you can go for.
