2017 Porsche 718 Cayman Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Porsche never fails to surprise by what they do with their cars. They make their cars minimalistic yet powerful, Cayman is one among them. The first cayman which dropped in 2005 was based on the second generation Porsche Boxster. The Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe may be based on the first Cayman but still has got an identity of its own.

There are a number of changes in the second iteration which you won't feel unless you take a test ride. Although, the one thing that has not changed much is the price. Yes, the Porsche Cayman 718 2dr Coupe is coming at a price of $53,900 while the Cayman S 2dr Coupe for a price $66,300.

Overall Rating

The Porsche Cayman 718 Coupe belongs to the mid-range segment with an engine that delivers a power of about 350 hp with the S variant. Although, it's not alone as there is plenty of competition with other great cars of the same segment like Jaguar F-type coupe, BMW M2 Coupe, and Audi TTS. Therefore, let's find out whether it matches to the standards as set by the first Cayman or not.

2017 Porsche 718 Cayman Features

There are two different manual variants to the new 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman: 718 Cayman and 718 Cayman S. The Cayman 718 are also available in automatic for both the variants although that takes away the fun of riding a Cayman. Also, the automatic variants are priced slightly higher for obvious reasons. The base variant of the car comes at a price of $53,900 while the Cayman 718 S variant comes for $66,300.

2017 Porsche 718 Cayman Engine

The 718 Boxster and Cayman have thrilling acceleration and handling; they remain the king of our sports-car hill. -thecarconnection

Engine and transmission

This is probably the best part about the Cayman. Although, the base feels a little less powered in comparison while driving around the city below 2200 rpm. The base as well as the S variant are blazing fast. You might look like a streak of light for some entry-level car owners.

Both the variant of the new Cayman is available in 6-speed manual transmission. The cars are equipped with a turbocharged engine, unlike the previous version which had a six cylinder one. The base variant has a 2.0L engine which generates a power of 300 hp and the S variant has a 2.5L engine that gives you a power of about 350 hp.

The base variant can reach a speed of 60 mph in just 4.9 while the same can be done by the S variant in just 4.4 secs. It's a treat to drive this car and to feel the rev. The car is powerful that you might feel the tarmac on the road burning.

Overall, it is all about power and sheer control over it. It is a car for people who love speed and yet likes all of it in minimalism. The Cayman has been among the top contenders in its segment since the first model dropped. With this car, you won't be just driving on the highways but simply overtaking everyone in your way.

It is as quick as a bullet although the good thing is that you've got full control over it. Yes, the car lags a bit below 2200 rpm but above that you can feel the raging acceleration giving a rush of adrenaline throughout your body.

The Cayman 718 achieves a speed of 0-60 mph in just 4.9 secs while the Cayman 718 S does that in just 4.4 secs. The acceleration may not be the best in its class but the joy of keeping your foot on acceleration is definitely the best.

The Jaguar F-type wins the competition in this segment by doing the same in 3.3 secs but you need to see the minimalistic design and the great stability that the car has to deliver. Riding a Cayman 718 keeps you on the edge while the car itself gives you the confidence to explore its power as much as possible.

Riding and Handling

The sports steering wheel of the car comes with three spokes design, it is both light and easy to ride. The car has ample power and with that has good handling capabilities, in fact, the best in its class. It gives you the confidence to rev it high on your choice of roads , although, riding fast in busy areas is not advisable.

People love the Cayman because it's a driver's car. The riding on the car is as smooth as it can be. You won't be discouraged while cornering sharp turns as the car maintain really well on the tarmac. Overall, talking about the riding and handling, it is neither good nor bad, it's just pure pleasure.

Yes, the Cayman 718 is fast enough to make you go mad beyond repair but what about its braking capabilities. The car is equipped with 330mm brake rotors with 4-piston calipers at the front both for the front and rear.

It can go fast but then it can be slowed down with that much ease only. It won't take much time for the car to hit 0 mph from straight 60 mph in under 100 ft on applying the brakes. The brakes that have been fitted on the front and rear are drilled which gives you better control on the street and also makes it look raunchier.

2017 Porsche 718 Cayman Fuel Economy

As a performance car, what's surprising is that it doesn't fail to deliver in this department also. The new 2017 Cayman 718 is actually better than its predecessor in fuel economy and also leads from much of the competition in its segment.

You are getting a fuel economy of upto 21 miles in the city per gallon while on the highways it is 28 miles, trust me it's a great figure for a performance car. The only car that leads in the competition in this department is the Audi TTS. Although, if mileage is something you would have expected then you won't be the prospective buyer of this great machine in the first place.

2017 Porsche 718 Cayman Interior

In the typical Porsche fashion, the 2017 718 Cayman's interior changes are subtle when compared to the previous generation, and that's a good thing. The cabin is smartly designed for ease of use, and the materials used throughout are impeccable. There is an abundance of buttons, but they are logically placed and well labeled. -edmunds

Seating and Comfort

It is a coupe with a seating capacity of only 2 people. There is plenty of space for the driver to make him sit comfortably. Also, the seats are made from the finest leather. The seating is laid back, comfortable yet aggressive.

The seat supports you well keeping you at in place in times of extreme cornering at high speeds. Also, one this to note is although it is not exactly for traveling the seats won't give you pain even on longer journeys. The co-pilot seat is also as good and comfortable as the driver's seat.

Infotainment System

This is one front where you can be a bit disappointed not because the base variant of the Cayman 718 has left anything. Although, it doesn't put anything new on the table. For instance, if talking about the Jaguar F-type Coupe has embedded air conditioner that comes out at the panel as soon as the car starts.

Well, yes they didn't have anything new in that department but it's not left without giving you all the necessary inputs that you might need during the ride. Yes, the infotainment system doesn't surprise but it doesn't keep you away from anything.

It is very responsive, have all the necessary features like navigational maps, music, connectivity options, and much more. Also, the best part about the whole console is that it has dedicated buttons to most of the important things like maps, nav, media etc. Also, it is very easy to use it so you won't really be disappointed on that front.

Below we have mentioned all the options as well as standard features that you can get in the 2017 Porsche Cayman 718:

  • AUX Input
  • Bluetooth Audio
  • Bluetooth Phone
  • USB

Optional Features

  • 4G LTE
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Mobile Wifi
  • Navigation
  • Real Time Traffic
  • Real Time Weather
  • Voice Recognition

Cargo volume

This car comes with cargo space both in the front as well as the rear. It is surprising to see the kind of engineering that has been done, it seems both smart and unique. The front cargo space gives you a capacity of 5.2 ft cube while the rear offers a 9.7 ft cube volume to carry your cargo.

The front space can be seen as soon as you open the bonnet while the rear is just at the back of the engine. The storage has been provided to give maximum utility. Although, if you'd like to take the maximum advantage of the space then we'd recommend a duffle bag.

One smart thing that you can witness on the car are the sliding holes by the side of the rear storage. This space of the car can be used to hide anything but keeping the basic tools inside was the first thing that hit my mind.

2017 Porsche 718 Cayman Exterior

The 718 carries on a beautiful tradition of timeless sports-car styling. -thecarconnection

If you're a Porsche fan and haven't got a chance to see this in real life then don't because it's love at first site, you'll be hooked. The 2017 Cayman 718 is pure love with cute looks, elegant design, formal contours, and most importantly minimalism.

The first look at this car gives you an impression of wide, low heighted, and if you look closer then detailed design both on the front and the back. The front LED light feels like the car is alive also the rear LED are thinly lined giving a posh feel to it.

Although, the most eye-catching exterior feature of the car is the brand on it. Yes, the branding looks jaw dropping as it has been sculpted inside the back panel. Also, the rear looks amazing from exhaust tip to the fin that comes out in a click of a button. Overall, it's a masterpiece in itself and if you're a fan of Porsche design you would be eager to have a date with it.

2017 Porsche 718 Cayman Safety

Safety and Reliability

The car is really fast so thinking that Porsche wouldn't prioritize safety would be the last thing that is gonna happen. The car has loads of safety features. We can agree on the fact that the cars weren't that reliable up till the mid 2000s but the cars beyond that proved themselves well to the owners.

Firstly, the engine of the car is placed backward which is an inherent advantage. Also, it has got two stage airbags which will protect both the head and the thorax of the rider and the co-rider. The two stage airbags will open depending upon the intensity of the collision.

The car a whole lot of other safety features, therefore, have a look at all the features that are provided on the car below:

2017 Porsche 718 Cayman Competition

Porsche 718 Cayman vs Jaguar F-Type Coupe

The Jaguar F-type is blazing fast, has aggressive looks, chunkier headlights and a charisma that doesn't keep it to the shallow ends. The car shines the way it should and it is undoubtedly a great competitor in the segment.

The moments to start the ignition, it makes you feel like you have a lot of power in hand. Although, it is aggressive in turns the car is both stable and agile with a few hinges on the bad tarmac. Therefore, the question arises is it better than the 2017 Cayman 718.

At certain places, yes it is definitely better than the Porsche Cayman 718 at least on the sheets. Although, you need to wait read to up to the final verdict of the car to get your answer.

Porsche 718 Cayman vs BMW M2 Coupe

It's pure driving fun the BMW M2 Coupe. Why do you think people would buy a car with this price otherwise? It is the coupe version of the BMW M3 and much more. The BMW is very quick and engages you on high speeds without making you even notice, it is that easy to handle.

The BMW M3 was bought in the earlier times because people weren't able to afford the Porsche 911. Therefore, yes it is a better car in terms of prices and is pure joy while riding. Although, it's nothing in comparison to the thrill that you get on riding a Cayman 718.

Audi TTS

It is lighter and faster at least from 0-60 mph in the beginning but what the story afterward. Well, Audi TTS is a great car undoubtedly but yeah it has its own loose ends. Firstly, the exterior might look appealing to a lot of people but personally, we'd rather go with the Cayman 718 any day.

The Audi TTS loses to Cayman 718 any day on sheets as well as real life. The car is slower in acceleration, heavier in weight, and it generates lesser power in comparison. The power is less than the Cayman 718 what if we through the Cayman 718 S variant into the pit.

2017 Porsche 718 Cayman Final Verdict

The Cayman 718 is undoubtedly a great car for enthusiasts especially. It churns almost 35 hp more power and 100 newton/meter more torque from its predecessor. Although, it lags in one crucial aspect, the engine sound. Yes, since Porsche dumped the six-cylinder engine for the turbocharged one the car lacks its identity.

But the verdict hasn't ended yet. The car is smooth on the tightest corners and delivers power enough to make you feel that you're sitting inside a rocket. The looks are great and interior are decent. It is a riders car and you won't be disappointed in that front. Although, if you'e a fan of the engine sound this may not be that likable to you but if you're expecting performance we'd say go ahead.
