Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 718 Cayman receives a small price hike over the outgoing 2021 model of around $1,500 for the base trim. The car goes up against the likes of the 2022 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, the 2022 Toyota Supra, and the 2021 BMW M2 Competition. The Cayman does demand a premium over these offerings, but the brand value and the focused performance do justification to this price.

The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman comes with a ton of customization options. Some important packages include the Premium Package for $4050, the Sport Chrono Package for $2090 and the 7-speed PDK gearbox for $3210. Apart from this, you have interior and exterior customization, with optional safety features as well.

We Recommend

The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman S trim is the car to go for. It adds a more powerful trim, with larger wheels. The S trim already gets everything of the base trim, so this is what we recommend. The PDK gearbox, the Premium Package, the extended fuel tank, and the Sport Chrono package are some must-have options.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman Engine and Performance

The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman comes with the same engine seen on the 2021 model. The 2.0L turbocharged Boxer-4 engine makes 300 hp @ 6500 rpm and has a torque output of 280 lb-ft @ 1950-4500 rpm. This engine is coupled to a 6-speed manual gearbox. A 7-speed PDK gearbox is optional. The car uses a rear-wheel-drive system as standard. The mid-engine layout of the 718 Cayman gives it a very controlled and balanced ride. The handling of the 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman, is mesmerizing. Now the 718 Cayman is not a very fast car, but it loves to be revved and the gearbox is just awesome. It's precise, shifts quickly, and has no lag.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe Hits 0-60 mph in 4.5 s

Take the car in the twisties, and the Cayman comes to life. It's very well planted and inspires confidence as well. The short wheelbase and the tight steering have not affected the car’s ride quality, as minor bumps are not even felt. The standard suspension setup is of struts at the front and the rear. Upgrading to the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) does help at improving the ride quality even more. This also lowers the car by around 10 mm and is priced at $1790. The steering is light and turns on the dime as expected. The car forms a bond with the driver, understanding every road and turn.

In terms of performance, the 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman, with the 6-speed manual takes 4.5 seconds to hit the 0-60 mph mark and 12.7 seconds for the quarter-mile. The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman S with the 6-speed manual improves this with a 0-60 mph time of 4.2 seconds. The top speed of the 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman stands at 170 mph.

The Corvette is slightly more expensive than the 718 Cayman. It also has the biggest engine of a 6.2L V8, and makes the most power and torque at 490 hp and 465 lb-ft. The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman is the slowest car in the bunch. The Corvette takes just 2.8 seconds for the 0-60 mph, whereas the Supra takes 3.8 seconds. The M2 Competition is the closest to the Porsche with its 0-60 mph time of 4 seconds. Apart from the Corvette at 11.2 seconds, all the remaining cars take 12 seconds or more to hit the quarter-mile. The Corvette also has the most top speed at 184 mph, followed by the 718 Cayman at 170 mph. The Supra does 160 mph and the M2 tops at 156 mph.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman Fuel Economy

Like most sports cars, the 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman also drinks a lot of fuel, but it's comparatively less. The fuel economy on the 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman is expected to remain the same as last year. The car’s fuel economy stands at 20 mph in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg combined. The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman S returns lower figures at 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The car has a fuel capacity of 14.2 gallons.

The least combined fuel economy is seen on the 2022 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, at 19 mpg. The BMW is the second least, at 20 mpg combined. The Supra offers the most, at 25 mpg combined. The best city mileage and the best highway mileage are seen on the Supra itself, at 22 mpg, and 30 mpg. The Corvette does the second-best highway efficiency at 27 mpg, but has the least city mileage at 15 mpg. The BMW returns the least mileage on the highway at 24 mpg.

The fuel capacity of the Corvette is the most, at 18.5 gallons. This gives the car the most highway range at 500 miles and the most combined range at 351 miles. The Supra and the M2 have the same fuel capacity at 13.7 gallons. The Supra offers the most city range at 301 miles. The 718 Cayman gives a range of 284 miles and 369 miles, city, and highway respectively.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman Interior

The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman’s interiors are similar to what we see on other Porsche cars. The interior is super sporty, with a driver-focused layout that gives a cockpit feel. The controls are easy to understand and are well-placed as well. The ironic point about this interior is that the control buttons are hard, and the dash features some hard plastics that feel low quality and take away the premium-ness in this interior. However, many surfaces get the leather treatment, if you want it. It costs extra. All in all, these interiors pack some plush but can do better as well.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe Dashboard

The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman is a two-seater car. The seats have tremendous comfort and come with a lot of support as well. There’s enough bolstering on the sides and the under-thigh support is excellent. The seats come with a ton of adjustability, making sure any body type and size can fit in comfortably. The taller passengers might have to duck in thanks to the low profile of the car. The doors open wide, so no problem getting in and out. Visibility from the cabin at the front and the side is superb, but there are some blindspots at the rear.

The cabin does not have much storage space: only a few pockets and cup holders. The pockets are shallow, and it's best to keep things in a bag or within the pockets. The cup holders are out of reach for the driver.

The BMW M2 is the only car here that can seat 4 passengers. In terms of interior space, the BMW M2 offers the most headroom, and the Corvette offers the most legroom in the front. The shoulder room in the front is similar in all the three rivals, at 54.4 inches. The second row of the M2 is tight in terms of legroom, but has decent shoulder room and headroom.

The standard cargo capacity is the most in the 718 Cayman at 14.9 cu-ft, whereas the M2 comes in second with a cargo capacity of 13.8 cu-ft. The Corvette has a cargo capacity of 12. Cu-ft. The Supra has the least, at 10.2 cu-ft. The Cayman has two storage spaces, at the rear and the front. The rear is pretty much vertical, and the one at the front is around half the size of the rear space. Some of the interior features on the 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman are:

  • Heated front seats
  • Auto-dimming rear-view mirror
  • Interior air filtration
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Tilt-and-Telescopic steering wheel

  • Smartphone compartment (opt) ($560)

How intuitive is the car’s infotainment unit?

The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman’s infotainment system is similar to last year’s, and we are not a fan of the same. The unit is complex, and takes time to learn thanks to tons of buttons. Both the trims get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe Infotainment System

Standard features include SiriusXM, HD Radio, Porsche communication management, Aux and USB ports, Bluetooth, etc. The optional assistance features and the parking sensors all show their data on this screen, and that is the only thing that is easy to understand on this unit. Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are:

  • 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Bluetooth
  • Two USB-ports
  • SiriusXM, HD radio, Satellite Radio
  • 8-speaker audio system
  • Burmester High-End surround sound system (opt) ($4690)
  • Bose Surround sound system (opt) ($990)
  • Navigation with Porsche Connect (opt) ($2320)

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman Exterior

The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman gets no changes to its exterior design. The 718 borrows a lot of styling cues from its sibling, the 911. The design is extremely sporty and gives an idea about how fast the car can go. It has a fly-line typical of mid-mounted engine cars. The front portrays a really wide nose, which drops down in order to aid visibility. The headlamps have a triangular shape that distinguishes them from the 911’s round headlamps. The horizontal front air intakes make the car look even wider. The fenders are taller than the hood, to highlight the headlamp design. At the side, you have huge wheel arches to accommodate even 20-inch wheels. The lines along the side serve one main purpose: to direct the air to the large side air intakes to cool the mid-mounted engine.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe Side View

The rear of the 718 Cayman is more sporty than the entire car. It has flat, oval tail lamps, and a central trim does aid in the illusion of a wider tail as well. The rear wing extends at higher speeds and is well tucked in at all other times. The central twin tailpipes separate the 718 from the 911. The car also comes with some additional exterior options, such as the Sport Design Package ($3050) and a range of 18-inch, 19-inch, and 20-inch wheels ranging from $600 to $4570.

It's around 4 inches longer than the Cayman which has a length of 172.4 inches. In terms of width, it's the Corvette again with the most width at 76.1 inches. The Supra and the M2 have the same width of 73 inches, whereas the Cayman’s width stands at 70.9 inches. 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman Competition

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe vs 2022 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

The 2022 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray gets no major changes for the year 2022. The Corvette has the same engine layout as the Cayman and is one of the most worthy rivals to this car. The base Corvette is still very powerful compared to the base 718 Cayman Coupe, and this gives it an advantage over the Cayman in terms of performance. The handling of both these cars is excellent as well.

2022 Chevrolet Corvette Front Angle View

The Corvette, however, has a very thirsty engine, and the Cayman excels in this part. Both the cars offer a great interior with a lot of comfort. The cars match in terms of safety as well. The Corvette does not provide the huge number of optional features that the Cayman does. However, the Corvette is much more affordable compared to the Cayman and works great as a daily driver as well.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe vs 2022 Toyota Supra

The 2022 Toyota Supra sees no changes to its 2022 model, apart from the minor changes to the interior and the addition of the A91-CF trim, limited to 600 units only. The Supra is a very direct competitor to the Cayman. The Supra leaves the 718 Cayman behind in most sectors, like performance, fuel economy, interior space, and features.

2022 Toyota Supra

The 2022 Porsche Cayman 718 gets a ton of customization, but it's a personal preference. Some might just take more interest in the performance factor, but some might prefer the brand persona and the level of customization.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe vs 2021 BMW M2 Competition

The 2021 BMW M2 Competition is the top-end car in the 2-series lineup, and is a sweet little compact car. But take a look under the hood, and you’ll know this car means serious business. The car makes more power and torque than the Cayman, and has better performance despite the heavyweight.

2021 BMW M2 Competition

The Cayman is more fuel-efficient. The M2 can seat 5 people, making this more convenient compared to the Cayman. The Cayman’s interiors are much better than the M2’s, and the customization options make it even better. In the end, it's important to remember that the BMW costs less than the Cayman, thus giving a larger budget for some performance upgrades.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman Final Verdict

The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman is Porsche’s iconic entry-level sports car. But with the mid-engine setup, the superb driving dynamics, and the signature Porsche interiors, it's hard to call it an entry-level car. The car is super roomy for a coupe. The level of safety offered is up to expectations, but we wish a few optional pieces of equipment were made standard. Also talking of optional equipment, there’s just too much to be able to focus on one. This entire package comes at a price: there’s a lot of outside noise, the Turbo Boxer-4 does not have the sound oomph and the overall expensive price tag does affect the 718 Cayman’s ground. The rivals are a better bargain, but for someone wanting the brand image and the persona that Porsche offers, the 718 Cayman does it right.
