The 718 series from Porsche is an entry to the absolute sports segment for beginners and starts at a lower price point. The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 was first introduced in 2016 and ever since has been satisfying the thirst of performance enthusiasts without breaking the bank. It is considered to be an entry-level sports car but doesn’t let the term entry-level fool you in any way as it imbibes pure Porsche characteristics in its DNA. Some rivals like Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, Lexus LC 500, and BMW M2 Competition.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 718 Cayman GT4 is a premium sports car with a mid-engine configuration, signature Porsche handling, and styling. It’s also practical for a two-seater car and imbibes a characteristic roofline making way for a pretty good cargo area. We believe that the 2022 model will also offer an engaging driving experience and a premium interior with not much to complain about. The 2022 GT4 will be available in a single trim only and its price is expected to start at $101,700.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Coupe Features

The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 is expected to be available mainly in one trim only and it is speculated that a GT4 RS version with 500 HP can be in the works and it has been spotted testing. We believe that the GT4 trim is sufficient to quench one’s thirst for performance and at a much lesser price than the GT4 RS trim, which will come with exorbitant pricing. However not much is known about the features and specifications of that trim. The 2022 718 Cayman GT4 will be mainly a carry-forward model

We Recommend

As there is only one trim that can be confirmed as of now, the GT4 is the only option to opt for. It comes with many features as standard and if that’s not enough you can opt for optional packages. The GT4 is available in manual and an optional 7-speed PDK automatic transmission. The GT4 RS is speculated for the year 2022 but nothing much can be said about it.

Release Date

It is speculated that the 2022 model will be on sale in late 2021. Also, nothing much can be said about the GT4 RS trim at the moment

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Coupe Engine and Performance

Like the 2021 model, the 2022 Cayman GT4 will be equipped with a 4.0 L six-cylinder boxer engine which produces 414 HP and 309 lb-ft of torque. It gets mated to a six-speed manual transmission and there is an option for a 7-speed PDK automatic transmission too. The manual transmission is slick and is for those who want to have a better engaging driving experience. It does a 0-60 mph sprint in about 4.2 seconds and the one with automatic transmission can do it in under 3.8 seconds. Moreover, the braking performance is also considerably good with 60-0 mph in under 99 feet of stopping distance.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Coupe Hits 0-60 in 4.2s

The Cayman GT4’s well-designed chassis and intuitive steering system can offer some real crazy track days. The secret of good handling lies in the mid-engine configuration which aids to offer a better weight distribution Adding to this the sticky tires, perform well across different surfaces and you just can’t complain about them. The GT4 is a well-balanced sports coupe with accurate steering, predictive handling, and a relaxed ride over different surfaces.

The 2022 GT4 model is expected to come with the same drivetrain as the 2021 model. The performance is good but the BMW M2 competition is faster by 0.2 seconds and it also comes with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard. However in the quarter-mile sprint. The GT4 takes the lead. The Lexus LC 500 produces more power from its larger 5.0 L engine but can’t beat the rivals owing to its underwhelming performance. The star of the game is actually the star. The AMG GT accelerates faster than its rivals and offers the second-best power output.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Coupe Fuel Economy

The 2022 GT4 model is expected to offer similar fuel efficiency as that of the 2021 model. It offers 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on highways. The combined fuel efficiency is claimed to be 19 miles per gallon. The BMW M2 competition offers better fuel efficiency than all its rivals. The 2022 model is expected to be on the same lines and deliver very similar results. The Mercedes AMG GT is the least fuel-efficient car but not by a big margin and with a fuel tank capacity of 19.8 gallons it can cover up to 357 miles on a full tank. The Lexus LC 500 comes with a greater fuel tank capacity of 21.7 gallons and offers a fuel efficiency of 19 mpg in mixed driving conditions. It can cover up to 413 miles on a full tank of gas.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Coupe Interior

The interiors of the 2022 Cayman GT4 will be similar to the outgoing model. It looks good, feels good, and exudes streamlined sporty purism. The cabin is not extraordinary but is functional and ergonomic. The instrument cluster is in direct view of the driver and comes with three round instruments and a central tachometer on which the yellow needle shows engine revolutions per minute, which is a typical characteristic of a 718. The dial face is titanium finish is marked with a ‘GT4’ logo. It gets a GT- specific steering wheel with top center marking and black spokes including inlays.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Coupe Seats

The steering wheel and the gear lever are trimmed in Alcantara material which ensures a good grip while driving. In addition to it, the door grab handles, the lid of center console storage, A-pillar, and roof lining also get Alcantara treatment. The dashboard trim strips and the center console in brushed aluminum highlight the sporty character of the new 718 Cayman GT4. The front seats are sports seats that offer good support and hold you well while cornering. A compact front cargo space adds to the rear cargo space and gets the GT4 an overall better cargo capacity than some of its rivals.

However, you can opt for additional features like built-in navigation and a WiFi Hotspot by paying extra bucks. The Porsche Communication Management will come with the latest generation mobile phone preparation and audio interfaces. It will also come with 11 GB of inbuilt storage and extend support for SD card/ MP3/DVD

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Coupe Exterior

The 2022 GT4 will remain identical to the 2021 model. Except few new colors can be introduced to add freshness to the line-up. The GT4 was designed to offer the least possible aerodynamic drag and look distinctive at the same time. We can say that the Porsche Design Team really succeeded in achieving both the targets flawlessly. The front fascia is unmistakably Porsche with a heavily streamlined honeycomb grille bumper and a smiling front air curtain which increases the downforce on the wheels and helps to cut corners quickly. Moreover, its signature headlights give it the identity of a 718.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Coupe Front Angle View

The side profile is also interesting with a coupe-style roofline and side intakes just behind the doors which help to let the engine breathe and spitfire. The side intakes also help in maintaining additional pressure and keeping the car stable at higher speeds. The highlighting feature of the rear is the huge spoiler that helps in generating downforce and keeping the car glued to the ground and also helps with braking. The LED taillamps are typical Porsche design and they blended well with the overall design language

The 2022 model is expected to come with similar exterior dimensions as the 2021 model and it's a good thing. The lower ground clearance results in a lower center of gravity which aids in better handling. Also, a shorter wheelbase helps with better cornering ability around the twisties. It is also the lightest of the lot which means it's clickable and will accelerate better. The Lexus and BMW come with a longer wheelbase as they offer a seating capacity of four people. The Mercedes AMG GT comes with a more balanced set of dimensions and hence it performs better in straight-line drag races. Some of the standout exterior features of the 718 Cayman GT4 are :

  • Bi-Xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights
  • Wide opening rear hatch with heated window
  • Fixed rear spoiler
  • Front fascia with large cooling air intakes,
  • Side air intakes
  • Lower rear fascia in Black with rear diffuser
  • Electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors

It will also incorporate anti-roll bars and an adaptive suspension system to avoid toppling at higher speeds. It will get full-size airbags for the driver and the passenger side and incorporates side impact protection elements in the doors. Apart from that, you will also get Porsche Stability Management as standard and the optional carbon-ceramic brakes for better braking performance under all driving conditions. Some of the standout safety features of the 718 Cayman GT4 are :

  • Porsche Side Impact Protection
  • Remote Central locking system
  • Engine Immobilizer

  • Park Assist Reversing Camera

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Coupe Competition

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 V/S 2022 Mercedes AMG GT

The specifications will say that the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT is a better car and it might be to some extent. However, it will not offer manual transmission as that of the GT4.

2022 Mercedes AMG GT

The manual transmission is preferred by performance aficionados and the GT misses it. The GT-4 is more of a sports car and the AMG GT is more of a grand tourer. The AMG GT will also be considerably pricier than the 2022 GT4.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 V/S 2022 Lexus LC 500

The Lexus LC 500 is a four-seater coupe and the GT4 will be a 2-seater coupe as per its 2021 model. The Lexus looks different and the performance is good too but it cannot beat the distinctive styling of the GT4.

2022 Lexus LC 500

The LC 500 comes with a bigger fuel tank capacity and offers similar efficiency figures from its bigger engine, which is commendable. In terms of practicality, the GT-4 will offer more cargo capacity owing to its mid-engine configuration.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 V/S 2022 BMW M2 Competition.

The 2022 M2 Competition model is expected to come with a refreshed design and offer better tech features than its rivals. Even with all the updates, the BMW will be cheaper and offer a seating capacity of four. The GT4 is a more expensive option here but will offer better handling and braking owing to its better aerodynamic design.

2022 BMW M2 Competition

The GT4 RS trim which is speculated to be launched soon will offer a class-leading output of nearly 500 HP. The BMW M2 will still be a more practical option owing to its capacity to seat four people and offer similar cargo capacity as that of the Porsche.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Coupe Final Verdict

The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 has always been a beloved car for performance maniacs and 2022 will follow the trend. It will offer a lot of fun on the track and can also be used as a GT on those weekend getaways. The safety quotient might be low as compared to some of its competitors but worry not, as it is adequate for most conditions. Also for a 2-seater sports car, it offers more cargo capacity than some of its rivals in the segment. With the speculated introduction of a new GT4 RS trim in 2022 with more performance and track tech, things are really gonna get interesting. Even the GT4 trim will be a lot of fun and we won’t think a second time to recommend it to someone.
