2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS Coupe Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Rahul Hans's image

Rahul Hans Automotive Journalist Updated on: November 14, 2019

The entry-level baby Porsche is a thoroughbred performance machine which has steadily come closer to the 911s in terms of driving dynamics and precise handling. The horizontally opposed flat-4 turbocharged engine placed down low in the chassis makes the 718 Cayman GTS stable and planted to the track even with extreme G-forces trying to make the tail spin out at every corner.

The 300 hp mid-engined coupe starts at $56,900 and gets you a 2.0L engine. But you can always upgrade to the Cayman S at $69,300 which comes with upgraded suspensions and a 2.5L engine paired to a larger turbocharger making 350 hp. At $80,700 you get the Cayman GTS which incorporates a variable geometry turbocharger to take the power to 365 hp.

With such amazing power to weight ratio, the Cayman GTS is capable of competing with powerful rivals like the Nissan GTR, the godzilla, along with the Mercedes E53 AMG and the Lexus LC 500.

2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS Coupe Features

The 718 Cayman GTS is the most performance focussed version of the 2-door coupe and comes with high end components borrowed from the 911 series; such as the gearbox and the variable turbocharger to max out the output from the powertrain.

We Recommend

The GTS is the best 718 in the lineup and the one you need for your garage. Porsche claims it made the Cayman GTS too good and it undercuts the need for a 911, so you can expect the level of performance the 718 Cayman GTS would deliver.

2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS Coupe Engine and Performance

8.5/10

The 718 Boxster S and 718 Cayman S boost that power to 350 hp and 309 lb-ft with a bigger displacement turbo-4. The GTS is the relative king of the hill with 365 hp and 317 lb-ft from its flat-4. - Car Connection

Engine and Transmission

The baby Porsche with a turbocharged 2.5L engine, which takes the horsepower from 350 hp in the Cayman S by utilizing a variable geometry turbocharger to churn out 365 hp in the Cayman GTS. The 7-speed dual clutch transmission gets you steering mounted shift paddles along with the bump in acceleration times. Although the flat-4 is an efficient and balanced engine, the grating noise it makes doesn't meet the refinement you expect from a Porsche.

In comparison, the Lexus LC 500 gets a 5.0L V8 making 471 hp coupled to a 10-speed transmission, while the Infiniti Q60 RedSport 400 comes with a rather small price tag but still makes 400 hp from its V6 unit. The Jaguar F-Type R Dynamic might be the closest competitor to the Porsche with 380 hp from its supercharged V6.

Acceleration

While the Cayman S takes 4.1 seconds to reach 60, the Cayman GTS takes those numbers to 3.9 seconds with the higher horsepower. The 2.5L turbocharged engine generates massive torque and pushes you back into your seat as it sprints down the tarmac.

The fastest one through the 60 mph sprint is the Nissan GT-R takes 2.9 seconds, blisteringly fast compared to the Porsche. The Lexus LC 500 and the E53 AMG are also fast ones on the drag strip and takes 4.4 seconds to get to 60, closely followed by the Infiniti Q60 which finishes milliseconds after the Porsche.

Ride and Handling

The stunning stability and virtually zero body roll through twisty mountain roads, kudos to the low centre of mass from the flat-4 engine and massive grip from the tires, puts the Cayman far ahead of the competition in terms of driving dynamics. The electromechanical steering lifted from the 911 turbo, has been fine tuned to forge a telepathic connection with the driver..

In the city the ride is relatively relaxed and controlled, the throttle response is predictable yet precise. However, if you're looking forward to test the limits, you'd want to spec your ride with the multi-mode Porsche Active Suspension Management system on the Cayman S and GTS, which offers a low-riding Sport-spec mode, as well as a revised Sport Chrono Package and Porsche Torque Vectoring.

Braking

The brakes are larger than ever before, with 13 inch discs on the front and 11,8 on the rear, they deliver powerful stopping force. Weighing 3000 lbs, the Porsche's work like a charm not only on tracks but also city streets. The brake pedal is extremely precise and direct, much like the steering.

The Lexus LC 500 comes with massive 15.7 inch brakes up front which deliver massive braking force to the hefty coupe. the Nissan GT-R and the Jaguar F-Type also has massive brakes which scrape away speed effectively. The Porsche is the lightest coupe of the lot, thus making the Porsche a stable through the corners.

2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS Coupe Fuel Economy

With a thrifty 2.5L 4-cylinder engine inside, the Porsche give excellent fuel economy, at least considering the competition. The PDK automatic transmission enhances the economy as compared to the manual transmission.

The E53 is one of the best coupes in the segment in terms of fuel economy, managing 21 miles to the gallon in the city and up to a staggering 28 mpg on highways. Closely following the Merc is the Infiniti Q60 with an average fuel economy of 22 ahead of the Porsche. The Nissan GTRs economy is notoriously bad and manages an average economy of 18.

2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS Coupe Interior

8.0/10

The 718's materials and presentation are excellent. Spending more doesn't get more; the 718 feels special, even in base configuration. - Car and Driver

Seating and Comfort

The driver-oriented cockpit makes the ride even more engaging for the driver, with a sport steering wheel with column-mounted shift paddles and controls for the audio and cruise control. The seats, as expected of a sports coupe have excellent bolstering and support to keep you in place through the corners. With enough headroom for the tallest occupants, the low roofline doesn't hinder practicality.

The 4-seater coupes not only have better space for the occupants but also get more interior storage, however, the rear seats aren't as useful as you'd hope to have with most of them not being able to accommodate tall adults. The Lexus LC 500 coupe and the Infiniti Q60 have some of the best passenger capacity in the segment.

Infotainment System

The sport steering connected to a tilt/telescopic column, automatic climate control, 6-speaker audio with CD, SiriusXM and HD Radio, Porsche Communications Management system and front/rear Park Assist. You get Apple CarPlay as standard however, the system lacks Android Auto support. Optionally you can replace the speaker system with a Bose or Burmester surround sound system.

Cargo volume

Complementing the front cargo bay is more storage options at the back. The mid-engined sports coupe keeps plenty of space open for storing cargo. The front storage is pretty decent but the rake angle of the rear eats up the cargo bay quite a bit.

2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS Coupe Exterior

Two years away from a redesign, the 718 (especially 718 GTS) is more menacing and sporty now. The available 20-inch wheels fill out the wheel arches in beautiful ways, but even the standard 18s are a good look. - Edmunds

The 718 Cayman GTS, a 2-door mid-engined coupe is small and sleek with the most perfect proportions ever seen. The 2019 Cayman GTS gets sharper lines, a revised front bumper and bigger side intakes. The Cayman also comes with an auto-extending spoiler at the back, to go with the sport-exhaust system. The huge 18-inch wheels get replaced with 19s on the Cayman GTS and give the coupe a low and wide stance.

The Cayman is extremely lightweight compared to the rivals, with the Corvette coming the closet to its weight class. The Porsche is also the shortest being strictly a 2-seater, but in terms of width it surpasses the rest by quite a margin, enhancing its stability.

2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS Coupe Competition

Porsche 718 Cayman GTS vs Jaguar F-Type R Dynamic

Compared to the Porsche the Jaguar comes with higher power from its supercharged V6, but the Porsche easily trumps the Jag with superior driving dynamics and the low ride which keeps the centre of mass close to the ground. On the interior, the Jaguar still has a few bits and pieces of hard plastics which Porsche neatly avoids with lathering everything in supple leather. Despite being tiny, the Porsche leaves a large amount of space for your cargo compared to the Jaguar.

Porsche 718 Cayman GTS vs Mercedes-AMG E53

The AMG E53 is a spectacular 4 seater coupe from Mercedes, with the AMG treatment it also rivals the Porsche's superior handling and performance. The Interior in the Mercedes is much more luxury features compared to the Porsche which adopts a mmore driver focussed approach to the cabin. In terms if practicality, the Merc pulls ahead in both passenger capacity and cargo volume.

Porsche 718 Cayman GTS vs Lexus LC 500

What Lexus has envisioned is essentially a Porsche killer, designed to specifically target the 718 Cayman GTS. The driving feel almost replicates the Porsche's precise steering and handling. The engine is much more powerful and torque-rich, while the cabin is much more luxurious and spacious. That being said, the Porsche is still leagues ahead of any other contender when is comes to handling. As a bonus, the Porsche has a far more spacious cargo bay.

2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS Coupe Final Verdict

The Porsche 718 Cayman GTS is a very capable sports coupe and gets you 911 level performance at quite a reasonable price. The driver-centric cabin with supple leather and supportive seats makes the interior a perfect cockpit for the kind of ride you'd expect from a Porsche. Despite the tiny stature of the coupe, Porsche offers a massive cargo capacity split between the rear and a front storage space.
