Porsche decided to cherish its rich racing heritage through a production car and then came along the 718 Cayman. With the 718 badging, the regular Cayman model lost a couple of cylinders from its flat-six motor and the turbo flat-four came into existence.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

For the 2022 model year, the Porsche GTS will remain mechanically unchanged and the updates will include a few cosmetic ones. The GTS is powered by a naturally-aspirated flat-six motor and gets a manual transmission as standard. In the segment, the car competes with the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Toyota Supra, and the BMW Z4 coupe.

Features

Since the 2022 718 Cayman GTS will come with no significant changes except for two new exterior colors, we expect most of its features will be carried forward from the outgoing model. The GTS is itself a trim level of the Cayman lineup and is available in a single powertrain and two transmission options. Some of the features include heated and cooled front seats, standard Sports Plus seats from Porsche, dual-zone automatic control, heated steering wheel, and leather upholstery among other features. Also, the GTS gets the Sports Chrono Package as default.

Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS will retain the outgoing 4.0-liter naturally aspirated H-6 motor. Like the outgoing model, the upcoming GTS will also dish out a maximum of 394 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of maximum torque. The motor is mated to a standard 6-speed manual gearbox. The motor produces some tasteful sounds via a sport-tuned exhaust system and Porsche has been generous enough to equip the car with a standard manual transmission for a whole new level of driving experience.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS Coupe Hits 0-60 mph in just 3.8s

Apart from generating a sonorous engine note, the motor is surprisingly refined and the power delivery is instantaneous owing to the absence of any forced induction system. On an average day, the 718 Cayman GTS will finish the 0-60mph run within 3.8 seconds and will complete the quarter-mile stretch within 12 seconds flat.

The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is the most powerful and fastest car among the rivals here along with a quickest 0-60mph time as well. It gets a huge 6.2-liter V8 motor and dishes out close to 500 horsepower. The Toyota Supra is another charmer from the land of Japan and matches evenly with the much costlier 718 Cayman GTS in terms of sheer performance. It is also a couple of seconds quicker than the Cayman to complete the quarter-mile stretch as well. The BMW Z4 M40i is just about at par with the Cayman GTS in terms of performance and power figures at a much lower price tag.

How well does the Porsche 718 Cayman GTS handle?

Making cars and SUVs with superb handling is almost a cakewalk for Porsche owing to its rich racing heritage and the Cayman is another fine example. The car handles in an excellent manner around the corners and has excellent on-road driving manners as well.

The steering is precise, responsive, and weighs up nicely as the speed increases. Comfort levels are also decent for a sports car and the suspension soaks up the road undulations without any hassle.

Braking Performance

The braking performance of the Porsche 718 Cayman GTS has been exemplary and is better than most of the rivals in the segment.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS Coupe Brakes

The car gets 6-piston aluminum monobloc fixed calipers at the front with cross-drilled discs and 4-piston aluminum monobloc fixed calipers at the rear with cross-drilled discs as well. The car comes to a standstill from 60mph within 99 ft.

The Corvette Stingray, despite being crazy powerful, gets a relatively small set of brakes and its stopping distance is not official. We expect it to perform decently but not as well as the Cayman. The Toyota Supra also has decent braking performance for a sports car with a stopping distance of 106 ft. The BMW Z4 M40i has the second-best braking performance among the rivals here, perfect for a sporty Beemer.

Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS is surprisingly fuel-efficient for a high-performance sports car, a result of precise German engineering. The car returns a maximum of 17mpg within the city limits and highway mileage of 24mpg. The combined mileage is rated at 19mpg. Despite having a sizable 14.2 gallons gas tank, the car has sub-300 miles of urban driving range.

The Corvette Stingray is also decently fuel-efficient considering its huge powertrain and blisteringly quick acceleration times. The Toyota Supra and the BMW Z4 truly impress with their fuel efficiency numbers despite being cheaper and almost as powerful as the 718 Cayman GTS.

Interior

6.0/10

The cabin of the 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS will remain the same as the outgoing model. Hence, you’ll find almost every exposed surface covered in leather upholstery and Alcantara since the GTS sits higher up in the trim lineup.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS Coupe Interior Overview

The standard Sports Plus seats are comfortable and offer excellent support while you indulge in some spirited driving sessions. The quality of the switchgear might disappoint you considering its eye-watering price tag but the rest of the cabin is made out of premium materials. The car beats most of its rivals with its generous combined cargo capacity of 14 cu-ft.

The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray offers the second-best trunk space here along with a decently comfortable cabin too. But it lacks the finesse that the Cayman has. The Toyota Supra is quite spacious for the segment and has an average trunk measuring at 10 cu-ft. The BMW Z4the gets one the best interior here with supremely comfortable seats and an elegant cabin design.

Some interior features are:

  • Heated and cooled seats
  • Race-Tex seat centers
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirrors with rain-sensing function
  •  Fully digital instrument cluster
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS gets a standard 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display running Porche’s own PCM interface. The system offers a handsome list of features and covers almost all the basics such as Sirius XM radio, HD Radio, Apple CarPlay, Porsche Car Connect, and the Sound Package Plus sound system among other features.

Some highlighted infotainment features are:

  • Porsche Car Connect
  • 7-inch touchscreen display
  • Bluetooth
  • 8-speaker audio system with 150-watt output
  • Apple CarPlay

Exterior

9.0/10

Even though the 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS looks like the previous generation cars, Porsche redesigned it extensively, making the car lower than before to give a better sporty appeal and better aerodynamics.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS Coupe Front Angle View

The front end looks smooth with rounded corners and sleek air intakes. The LED headlamp units look cool with the DRL running. The read-end looks mildly aggressive with the dual exhaust pipes and the LED taillights.

The Chevrolet Corvette is the most muscular one here, as its powertrain under its hood and has the maximum ground clearance on offer. The Cayman GTS has the least amount of ground clearance and has the most non-aggressive design language. The Supra looks angry from the front and has a lot of sharp design cues. The BMW Z4 looks elegant while its front end is designed towards the aggressive side.

Some exterior features are:

  • 20-inch blacked-out wheels
  • Xenon headlamps
  • Underbody paneling
  • Automatically extending rear wing
  • Grey top tint on windscreen

Safety

8.0/10

Owing to the steep price tag of the 718 Cayman GTS, it never made it to the crash-tests performed by both the IIHS and the NHTSA. Despite that, the car has an excellent build quality with aluminum composite construction and intelligently placed front and rear crumple zones. It also comes with a list of handy features but lacks some advanced safety techs such as automatic emergency braking.

Some standout safety techs include:

  • Anti-theft system with engine immobilizer
  • Porsche Side Impact Protection System
  • Front and rear crumple zones
  • Dual front advanced airbags
  • Seat belt pretensioners and load limiters

Competition

9.0/10

Porsche 718 Cayman GTS vs Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

The Corvette used to scream “Murica” in its previous generations with a low-slung yet muscular design language and a beefy powertrain. But things have changed now in terms of the design only.

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

It houses a massive 6.2-liter V8 and has a blisteringly quick 0-60mph time of 2.8 seconds, putting it in the supercar territory. Its interior looks futuristic and sporty but the Porsche Cayman beats it with its well-engineered and elegant cabin. Performance-wise, the Corvette is superior to the Cayman at a much lower price point.

Porsche 718 Cayman GTS vs Toyota Supra

Toyota revived the legendary Supra but it looks nothing like the one we miss so badly. It has a lot of sharp styling cues but has a small footprint with a compact overall design.

Toyota Supra

It is almost evenly matched with the Cayman in terms of performance but comes nowhere near to the latter in terms of cabin comfort.

Porsche 718 Cayman GTS vs BMW Z4

The BMW Z4 is the only worthy competitor of the Cayman when it comes to a plush and well-designed cabin. The Z4 is also evenly matched with the Porsche 718 Cayman in terms of performance but it costs way lesser than the latter and delivers an impressive fuel economy as well. The Z4, however, falls short in terms of trunk space though.

BMW Z4

Final Verdict

The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS promises endless fun and sheer driving experience with its brilliant H-6 motor and the standard 6-speed transmission. But its steep price tag makes it suitable only to those who seek a Porsche with a healthy dose of performance underneath. Since most of its rivals offer similar or better performance than the Cayman at a much lower price point, you can look elsewhere if performance is all you want.
