Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman S is expected to come in the same configuration as that of the current model and will be available only in a single trim, albeit with some minor updates. The price is expected to be in the ballpark of $73,000. It is expected to retain its peppy drivetrain and offer an addictive driving experience like no other car in its category. It will face competition from the likes of BMW M2 Competition, Toyota GR Supra 3.0, and Audi TT RS.

As there is only one trim available, you don’t have a choice and will have to go with it. However, it is not short of many features and comes with many desirable features as mentioned above in the table. The pricing will start at $73,000 and it is expensive as compared to some of its rivals, but the handling and performance offered by the 718 Cayman S is second to none and is sure to make your drive a memorable experience.

Release Date

Porsche is planning to launch the 2022 718 Cayman S Coupe by the end of fall 2021, and we are eagerly waiting for it. However, we have heard that online bookings have started, and you may try your luck to reserve one for yourself.

Engine and Performance

The 2022 718 Cayman S will be equipped with the same 2.5L boxer engine producing 350 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque. It will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission, and the power is transferred to the rear wheels only. The transmission will be slick, and short gear ratios will offer a fun-to-drive experience. A manual transmission offers a more sporty driving experience than a conventional automatic transmission as you can rev it up to the red-line and get the thrill.

It will be a mid-engine car, resulting in better weight distribution, and being equipped with a boxer engine will result in a lower center of gravity, resulting in better handling around the corners. It is expected to do a 0-60 mph run in about 4.2 seconds, which is slower than the competition, but the ride experience that the Cayman has on offer is second to none.

The suspension is tuned precisely and offers great control on track and on-road as well.

The BMW M2 Competition and 718 Cayman S offer a manual transmission, while the rest offer an automatic transmission. The M2 and Supra come with larger engines, offering more firepower and better acceleration times. The TT RS comes with a 2.5L engine only but offers the most power output and performance as well. It is also priced in the range of the 718 Cayman S.

Fuel Economy

While comparing sports cars, we are not supposed to consider fuel efficiency figures. However, these cars are expected to give decent fuel efficiency figures for the performance they have on offer. So, considering the current model data of 718 Cayman S as reported by users, you can expect about 19 mpg, 24 mpg, and 21 mpg in the city, on the highway, and in mixed driving conditions, respectively. With a fuel tank capacity of 16.9 gallons, it is expected to travel up to 321 miles, 405 miles, and 355 miles in the city, on the highway, and in mixed driving conditions, respectively.

Surprisingly, the Supra is more fuel-efficient despite having a larger engine. However, it comes with a smaller fuel tank capacity and loses out in the range battle. The Cayman is the clear king of range, owing to a larger fuel tank capacity. The BMW M2 Competition is the least efficient of the lot and comes with a smaller fuel tank, losing out miserably in the range battle.

We don’t expect many changes in the 2022 model, and it will carry forward its most prominent interior features. The interior of every Cayman matches well with its performance and offers a sporty feel when you are inside. It will continue to offer easy-to-read gauges, ergonomic controls, and comfortable seating for two passengers including the driver. The sport seats will be offered as standard and come with heating functionality as well. However, the standard interior will be completely in black color theme, and that may be claustrophobic to some.

Also, most of the surfaces will come in hard plastics that may steal away some of the Cayman’s premium appeal. But the good news is that Porsche offers many customizable options and can add leather to almost any interior surface as per your desire, surely with a hefty additional cost though. The Cayman gets two storage compartments, one in front and one in the rear. So, the overall practicality is more than some rivals.

Cargo Capacity(cu-ft)*

* Expected and 2021 data used for reference

The Cayman offers the best-combined cargo capacity of 14.9 cu-ft that's split in between the frunk and trunk. The BMW M2 competition comes second with 13.8 cu-ft of space, followed by Audi TT RS and Toyota Supra GR. The M2 Competition offers better headroom and legroom across both rows when compared with Audi TT RS. Some of the standout interior features are:

  • Sports type and heated front seats
  • Integrated headrests
  • Green tinted heat-insulating glass
  • Dual-zone climate control system
  • Auto-dimming mirrors
  • ParkAssist with reversing camera
  • Black theme interior

How intuitive is the 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman S coupe’s infotainment unit?

The infotainment system of the 2022 718 Cayman will also be powered by the Porsche Communication Management system. A 7.0-inch touchscreen display displays all the media information in a clear and legible format, but we expect better in this segment and would like to see the changes in the 2022 model. It will also get features like SiriusXM satellite radio, HD radio receiver, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, etc.

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman S Coupe infotainment screen

For your musical needs, you will get a CD/DVD drive, 11 GB internal jukebox storage, and a sound system with 8-speakers and 150W of output. You can also opt for a 10-speaker Bose or 12-speaker Burmester premium sound system for better output and experience. For smartphone connectivity, you get wired Apple CarPlay with Siri support but Android Auto is not available which is a bummer. Some of the standout infotainment features are:

  • Porsche Communication Management
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • HD radio
  • Porsche Car Connect
  • CD/DVD drive
  • 11 GB jukebox storage
  • Apple CarPlay (wired)
  • 8-speaker audio system

The 2022 Cayman S will carry forward the undeniable Porsche charm. So not many changes are expected as compared to the outgoing model, except two new exterior color schemes. The front fascia will imbibe Bi-Xenon headlights with Porsche dynamic light system with 4-point DRL LEDs and sloping hood-line that will merge with the bumper in absence of a grille. The overall setup is very useful for better aerodynamic efficiency.

Just like the outgoing model, the side profile will get air intakes just behind the doors and a sloping roof-line that will accentuate its sporty character. The rear profile will carry two sleek LED taillights, and center-mounted dual exhausts beneath the rear bumper will look superb. The Cayman will seat on 19-inch alloy wheels, and their design blends well with the overall design language of the car.

Ground Clearance*

* Expected and 2021 data used for reference

The BMW is the bulkiest of the lot, whereas the Porsche is the lightest. The Audi TT RS comes with a higher ground clearance than the competition, followed by M2 Competition, Supra, and Cayman. Overall dimensions suggest that the Cayman is more compact in comparison to the rivals, and that aids with better handling and performance. Some of the standout exterior features are:

  • Automatic extending rear wing
  • Underbody paneling
  • Grey tint on the windscreen
  • Power and heated exterior side mirrors
  • Bi-xenon headlights
  • LED taillights

Like many other sports cars, the 2022 Cayman is not crash tested by agencies like NHTSA or the IIHS, and we don’t expect it to be tested anytime soon. But looking at Porsche’s history of making reliable and well-built cars that are fast while being safe too, we expect the new 718 Cayman S to be pretty safe. With its active and passive safety features, you are bound to be safe. Porsche claims that the body structure of every Cayman is made from aluminum and steel composite along with galvanized steel body shell components, making it lighter and stiffer as well. Some of the standout safety features are:

  • Side guard door beams
  • Radar-based anti-theft system
  • Porsche side impact protection system
  • Post-collision safety system
  • Front and rear crumple zones
  • Porsche stability management system

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman S V/S 2022 BMW M2 Competition

The Porsche Cayman is quite lighter than the BMW M2, and that makes it more agile around corners. However, the M2 is equipped with a bigger engine and makes more firepower, and that can be seen in its performance too. The M2 is also priced less in comparison to the Cayman that is exquisitely priced. The Cayman is a proper sports car with its lovable handling and with performance that is addictive in nature, and we won’t mind spending extra on the signature Porsche experience

2022 BMW M2 Competition

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman S V/S Toyota GR Supra 3.0

The Cayman and Supra are closely matched with respect to their exterior dimensions, but the Porsche offers better cargo capacity than the Supra and is lighter as well. The Toyota GR Supra offers better performance from its larger engine and is also priced quite less than the 718 Cayman S coupe. The Supra is also more fuel-efficient than the Cayman despite being bulkier than it. It also handles well, but the Cayman, being a mid-engine sports car, allows for better handling.

Toyota GR Supra 3.0

2022 Porsche 718 Cayman S V/S 2022 Audi TT RS

The Cayman and TT RS are closely matched with respect to their price point. The Audi TT RS is more powerful than the 718 Cayman and handles equally well on the track. The TT RS can accommodate up to four passengers, whereas the Cayman settles for two passengers only. The Cayman is lighter than the TT RS, and that makes it compensate for its less power output. Both the brands belong to the same parent company, and we believe that both are equally good offerings in their own respect.

2022 Audi TT RS

Final Verdict

The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman is a worthy sports car in many respects and imbibes the Porsche DNA within itself very well. Its lovable handling and punchy boxer engine mated with a manual transmission is a staple for enthusiasts. It is tuned for on-track as well as on-road performance. It delivers well on safety quotient as well and looks distinctively Porsche on road. Although, we would have liked the interior to be more appealing in its standard avatar. The efficiency figures are also on the lower side, but who cares when you are getting an adrenaline boost like no other.
