Although people perceive it to be a midsize luxury SUV, Porsche believes the Cayenne to be a sports car for 5 people. They have been producing the Cayenne since 2003 based on the same belief and are now introducing the all-new 2020 Porsche Cayenne with many upgrades.

The 2020 Cayenne comes in two trims namely the Cayenne and the Cayenne S. The Cayenne is priced at $65,700 and is powered by a 3.0 liter turbocharged V6 engine. While on the other hand the Cayenne S is priced at $82,900 and flaunts a 2.9 liter twin-turbo V6 engine. Moreover this year the Cayenne comes with a redesigned body on both the front and back. Also, it looks like Porsche has worked a bit on making it lighter in weight.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

The Porsche Cayenne was one of the first "Sports" SUVs in the market and over the years, it has established itself as one of the best. The balance it strikes between being sporty and practical is also very impressive. After being alone in the segment for a very long time, it now faces tough competition from the newcomers into the market such as the Maserati Levante, Audi Q8 and the Jaguar F-Pace S. Can they take on the Cayenne, let's find out.

2020 Porsche Cayenne Features

The 2020 Porsche Cayenne comes in 2 trims as mentioned before i.e., the Cayenne and the Cayenne S. Although the price difference between them is not so high. The Cayenne is priced at $65,700 and the Cayenne S is priced at $82,900.

The base trim i.e., the Cayenne comes with quite a power-packed 3.0 liter turbocharged V6 engine. Moreover it flaunts many features such as the new LED main headlights, taillight strip, partial leather seats, a 12.4-inch touchscreen, etc.

On the other hand the Cayenne S comes with a very powerful 2.9 liter twin-turbo V6 engine. It also flaunts almost al the features of the base Cayenne but in addition to them it also has Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), tinted taillights and a panoramic roof.

We Recommend

Since the price difference between the trims is quite less, if you are ready to spend a little more, you can always go for the Cayenne S. Also though the standard features offered are quite less, the Porsche provides you with many customization options to customize your Cayenne as per your tastes and choice. Not to forget you also have the Optional Sport Chrono package available on both the trims to provide you with an even more power-packed than they usually provide, just at the push of a button.

2020 Porsche Cayenne Engine and Performance

"There's plenty of performance here no matter what your needs. The Cayenne is one of the best-performing SUVs you can buy." - Edmunds

The 2020 Porsche Cayenne is equipped with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine. This engine comes with a twin-scroll turbocharger which has been placed between the cylinder banks and helps in producing a horsepower of 340 hp along with a torque of 331 lb.ft.

This engine comes paired with 8-speed automatic transmission and a standard All-Wheel Drive System. Moreover, it is also equipped with the Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) feature which actively manipulates the aerodynamic behavior of the car, by controlling numerous flaps integrated into the air intakes thus improving the efficiency and performance of the engine.

Torque 331 lb.ft 369 lb.ft 369 lb.ft 332 lb.ft 330 lb.ft 332 lb.ft

Although the Cayenne is equipped with quite an efficient engine, it still looks less powered while looking at the competition. The Jaguar F-Pace leads the class with a horsepower of 380 hp followed by the Audi Q8 and the Maserati Levante. Then comes the Porsche Cayenne at the end of the line on par with the Levante.

The 2020 Porsche Cayenne accelerates to the speed of 60 MPH in 5.9 seconds and finishes a quarter mile in 14.4 seconds. This sluggish acceleration is due to the low power of the engine. However, if you want your Cayenne to perform a bit better you can spend around $1,000 more to get the Sports Chrono package that helps it the car accelerate to 60 MPH in 5.6 seconds. With this package you get a SPORT PLUS mode in which the engine becomes more responsive, the damping gets harder and the steering gets more direct.

The sluggish acceleration of the Cayenne puts it at the end of the line. Even here the F-Pace S leads the class followed by the Q8 and the Levante.

Ride and Handling

Despite the high stance of the vehicle, looks like the Cayenne handles itself fine. Its steering is quite exceptional. Its electrically assisted power steering feels quite powerful. Moreover, its newly integrated chassis controlling analysis multiple driving situations and accordingly adjusts the chassis accordingly to provide optimum performance.

Moreover, it is also equipped with various other features such as adaptive air suspension, rear-axle steering, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), etc to make your drive more easy and comfortable. On the other hand, the Cayenne S comes with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as a standard feature.

The 2020 Porsche Cayenne has quite an optimum braking performance for the aggression it shows. It has a front brake of 13.7 inches and a rear brake of 12.9 inches. Moreover, the bite feels smooth when paired with the adaptive air suspension, thus avoiding a jerk in emergency situations. Also due to its heavy and well-balanced weight, the car doesn’t turn around from its path when the Brakes are applied at high speed.

2020 Porsche Cayenne Exterior

"The 2020 Cayenne breaks no new ground from the outside; inside, it’s been beautifully streamlined." - The Car Connection

The 2020 Porsche Cayenne looks quite new but still looks identical to its predecessors. Its revamped looks include heavily emphasized front wings, the long sloping bonnet with power domes and the three-piece air intakes, which have become even larger and more dominant. Moreover what makes it look much stunning are the main LED headlights and the tail light strips. On the other hand, the redesigning of the Cayenne has cut down a lot of weight to glide more swiftly through the wind.

2020 Porsche Cayenne Competition

2020 Porsche Cayenne vs Maserati Levante

The 2020 Maserati Levante is quite might look a little powerful than the Porsche Cayenne. But even after having a twin turbocharger, a horsepower of 5hp would not be an appreciable power when compared to the turbocharged V6 of the Cayenne. Moreover, it performs on par with the Cayenne. Moreover, in terms of interior quality, the Porsche offers you a cake. So paying up the $10,000 more for a tad more power doesn’t justify what you are going to pay for.

2020 Porsche Cayenne vs Audi Q8

Previously the Audi Q7 was usually considered as a competitor from Audi for the Cayenne. However, it was not an identical competitor in many aspects. Now with the Q8 in the market the whole scenario changes. It’s the first year for the Audi Q8 into the market of mid-size SUVs and crossovers. It looks like a more identical competitor but with more power and better performance than the Cayenne. Although most of its other specs and features are still not available, paying around a $2,000 for the power-packed performance it provides than going for the Sports Chrono package by paying a $1,000 more.

2020 Porsche Cayenne vs BMW X5

The Porsche Cayenne and the BMW X5 have been rivals for more than a decade now. The Cayenne is more powerful but the X5 provides better performance. Both of them are technologically well equipped, have a luxurious interior. Although the X5 has an option to fit in a 3rd row which the Cayenne can’t afford. Still, the X5 looks a bit dated when compared to the all-new look of the Cayenne. However, that can be justified for the price being paid. So looks like the X5 might have a slight upper hand there.

2020 Porsche Cayenne Final Verdict

The Porsche Cayenne has been in the market for quite more than a decade now. This is one of the most credible midsize SUVs of this age. Moreover, with the all-new generation of the Cayenne that comes this year, the stakes might be a bit high. But still considering its rivals, the Cayenne has much more to improve for the price being paid.
