Overall Rating

The 2022 Cayenne sees a few changes to the exterior and interior of the Cayenne rest mostly remains the same as the 2021 model. It comes with three engine options, a potent V6 with turbochargers, an electric motor, and a battery that combines with the V6 which comes in the E-hybrid trim, 2021 also saw the return of the GTS trim which is the most powerful version that comes with the V8.

It competes against cars like the BMW X5, the Audi Q8, and the Maserati Levante. The Audi and Porsche are basically the same cars as both are based on the same MLB platform from Volkswagen. The combination of a powerful engine, and intuitive driving dynamics make the Cayenne the most desirable choice amongst enthusiasts.

The mid-cycle facelift raises the price of the Cayenne by a small margin. Overall, however, the vehicle remains the same, in terms of features anyway. Inside, the Cayenne is still powered by the turbocharged V6 engine producing 335 horsepower.

We Recommend

Although the Cayenne in itself has impressive power and luxury, especially after the refresh this year, we recommend looking into its packages. The Premium package for around $8900, adds impressive luxury features like a Bose surround-sound system, heated and ventilated seats, and power close doors. The Assistance Package is also an impressive addition for around $6200, which adds driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control and a 360° surround view.

2022 Porsche Cayenne Engine and Performance

Various engine options come with the Porsche Cayenne to meet the needs of everyone. Despite being a large-sized SUV it is a marvel as it has the best combination of engine and driving dynamics thanks to the powerful engine, AWD, and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus. The base model of the Cayenne comes powered by the smallest engine of them all which is a 3.0L turbocharged V6 engine that puts out 335-horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. This engine takes the big chariot up to 60 MPH in 5.9 seconds and tops at 152 MPH.

2022 Porsche Cayenne SUV In Acceleration Mode

The more fuel-efficient engine, which comes in the E-Hybrid is faster than the standard engine, which is surprising, the E-Hybrid engine is a combination of an electric motor which has an output of 134 horsepower and the same V6 as the standard model which combine to produce 455 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque and has a top speed of 157 MPH. With the optional Sports Chrono package, 60 MPH comes up in just 4.7 seconds.

The slightly sportier and powerful S variant comes with a 2.9L twin-turbo V6 engine that gives out 434-horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque and runs up to 60 MPH in just 4.9 seconds, and with the Sports Chrono package, it takes 4.6 seconds, with a top speed of 164 MPH. The best and most powerful engine of them all is the 4.0L twin-turbo V8 which has a total power output of 453-horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque which takes up to 60 MPH in just 4.5 seconds.

With the Sports Chrono Package, the time further reduces to 4.2 seconds, which is astonishing for a car the size of Cayenne, and the top speed sits around 167 MPH. All the engines are combined with the same 8-speed automatic transmission with an AWD drivetrain and offer a towing capacity of up to 7,700 pounds. Maserati offers the most power with the same engine, the remaining cars offer almost identical performance on paper.

2022 Porsche Cayenne Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The base engine is the most economical of the lot, which is obvious. EPA estimates that the standard V6 engine returns 19 MPG in the city, 23 on the highway, and 20 MPG in combined cycles. It comes with a 23.7-gallon fuel tank, which allows for a total range of 474 miles. The Cayenne S also returns almost identical figures with the same MPG rating in combined cycles and 18 MPG for city and 22 MPG for highway.

Unsurprisingly the V8 has the lowest MPG ratings, according to EPA, it returns 15 MPG in the city, 19 MPG on the highway, and 17 MPG in combined cycles. The most efficient engine of the lot is the E-Hybrid engine returns 21 MPG in mixed driving conditions and 41 MPGe on electricity alone.

BMW has better fuel efficiency than the rest of the competition which makes up for a better range, which is followed closely by the Cayenne which has the largest fuel tank making it compete with the BMW with ease.

2022 Porsche Cayenne Interior

9.0/10

Inside the Porsche is just like every other Porsche comes with a well-built and premium-feeling cabin. It is made from the best materials available and is beautifully designed. The center console is filled with touchscreen buttons and there are no knobs and buttons present, the previously traditional analog cluster in front of the driver is also replaced by a big screen in the 2022 model.

2022 Porsche Cayenne SUV Interior Overview

The Cayenne also comes with a host of tech and features like heated and ventilated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control keyless ignition, and much more. There is also an option for four-zone climate control. The trunk of the Cayenne offers 27.2 cubic feet of space which is less than most other SUVs in the segment but is still enough to store almost everything needed for a short weekend trip around the countryside for a small family.

2022 Porsche Cayenne Safety

9.0/10

Such an expensive car is bound to come with class-leading safety features and tech, which means it comes loaded with all the latest driver aid features and safety tech. Starting right from the base model, each variant comes with a forward-collision warning and parking sensors at both the front and the rear of the car. The car also comes with a night vision camera and an optional infrared camera. Other safety features that come in the Cayenne are listed below:

  • Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Rear-cross traffic alert
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane-keeping assist

Expensive cars like the Porsche Cayenne are expensive to crash test, which means that they are not tested by either of the government agencies like the NHTSA or the IIHS.

2022 Porsche Cayenne Competition

8.0/10

2022 Porsche Cayenne vs 2022 BMW X5

The toughest competitor to the Cayenne is undoubtedly the X5 which offers spacious two rows of seating, better standard cargo space, is more fuel-efficient than the Cayenne, comes with more standard safety features, and also the optional features top off the list making it way bigger than the Porsche, it has an equally premium interior and comes with a lesser price tag than the Porsche, which easily makes it the winner.

2022 BMW X5

2022 Porsche Cayenne vs 2022 Audi Q8

Technically both these cars are based on the same platform and are corporate cousins but where the Cayenne is a car that is more intriguing to the driver, Q8 caters to the needs of both the driver and the occupants.

2022 Audi Q8

Audi also manages to offer better MPG figures, spacious interior, and a few more safety features, but in the end, choosing between the two becomes a choice of personal preference.

2022 Porsche Cayenne vs 2022 Maserati Levante

If you prefer looks over anything else then yes, there is no better-looking SUV than the Levante, but it comes with a list of drawbacks.

2022 Maserati Levante

Levante offers good performance and driving dynamics, but the MPG figures are worse than the Porsche, further, the cabin might be more spacious but fails to match the build quality of the Porsche. It is also more expensive than the Cayenne.

The 2022 Porsche Cayenne sees a bit of the change being brought to the interior and the exterior of the car, which would make it look even more aggressive and sporty all while carrying the same driving characteristics, respectable fuel economy, excellent build quality, and powerful engines. With such brilliant packaging, we expect the Cayenne will again prove to be the best driving SUV, that will bring a smile to the face of every enthusiast.
