Ever since its launch back in the early 2000s, the Porsche Cayenne has always been the best-selling model for the brand. Following modern trends, Porsche released a coupe model of the Cayenne shortly after launching the all-new third-generation model. While the original Cayenne was always looked down upon due to its polarising design, the new model significantly improves on all fronts, with handsome styling, capable drivetrains, car-like dynamics, and feels like a Porsche despite the SUV body.

For 2022, Porsche is going all out with the new Turbo GT model which houses the most powerful V-8 Porsche has ever made, belting out an impressive 631 hp. The Cayenne is the biggest SUV in Porsche’s lineup, slotting in above the Macan. Along with the new drivetrain, the Cayenne GT also gets an updated infotainment system, unique design elements like a center-exit exhaust, and a lot more.

We recommend

The 2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT Coupe is a standalone trim that is now situated on top of the Cayenne lineup being the most powerful one. It is equipped with a superb set of features and there’s plenty more to opt for from packages and optional features. The new Cayenne GT Coupe is the most expensive blend of performance and luxury Porsche has to offer in a rugged build.

2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo GT SUV Engine and Performance

For the new Turbo GT, Porsche has thoroughly reworked their 4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 powertrain with robust internals like camshaft, timing chain, pistons, connecting rods, and more, allowing it to produce an impressive 631-hp and 626 lb-ft of torque. With almost 100 hp more than the standard Cayenne Turbo, the GT blitzes the competition, reaching 60 MPH in just 3.1 seconds.

However, despite the power bump, the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid is still the most powerful model in the lineup, packing 670 hp. Porsche has also updated the 8-speed automatic transmission for quicker shifts, allowing it to walk past all the other Cayenne models including the S E-Hybrid, even with the 39 hp power deficit. Other notable drivetrain upgrades include a water-cooled transfer case and a center-mounted titanium exhaust, developed specifically for the Turbo GT model.

Thanks to the lighter chassis and upgraded performance, the new Turbo GT is the fastest Cayenne ever, reaching 60 MPH in just 3.1 seconds, which is 0.7 seconds quicker than the regular Cayenne Turbo. Quarter-mile timing is also impressive at 11.6 seconds. While the new 2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT Coupe is a lot more expensive than both the BMW X6 M and Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 63 S, it matches the performance of the Lamborghini Urus, which costs substantially more than all of these machines.

How does the 2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT Coupe Handle?

To handle the extra performance, the Turbo GT gets a myriad of chassis and suspension upgrades. Compared to the regular model, the Turbo GT gets specifically tuned components like adaptive dampers, steering, active anti-roll bars, and more to keep the body lean in check through the corners. The wheels are also bigger at 22-inches and measure almost 1 inch wider than the standard model with increased negative camber.

The GT also gets Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires which were specifically developed for it. Other notable additions include standard carbon-ceramic brakes with 17.3-inch rotors at the front and 16.1-inch at the rear. With all these upgrades, the GT can easily put some purpose-built sports cars to shame out in the track, placing it up there with the likes of the excellent Lamborghini Urus. In fact, the Cayenne GT handles as well as a sports sedan, which is the highest praise for a large SUV.

2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo GT SUV Fuel Economy

Because of the extra performance, we can expect the new Cayenne Turbo GT to be slightly less efficient than the regular turbo model which returns around 15 MPG in the city and 19 MPG on the highways. However, with the large 23.7-gallon fuel tank, it can match and even beat some of its rivals in terms of highway range. Customers who’re looking for more efficiency can opt for the E-Hybrid model which is sold alongside the Turbo GT.

With over 630 hp on tap, the new Cayenne Turbo GT is expected to return similar economy figures as the BMW X6 M and Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S, however, the Lamborghini Urus is still the least efficient SUV in its class. However, with a higher capacity fuel tank, the Porsche easily offers the most combined range just above 400 miles which is super-impressive.

2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo GT SUV Interior

While the interiors may look similar at first glance, the 2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT Coupe gets several subtle upgrades to distinguish it from the rest, most notable of which is the yellow stripe on the steering wheel, like most sports cars, hinting at the performance on offer. Other notable changes include the unique seat pattern with extra padding, gold or grey stitching in the upholstery, and embossed headrests. The rest of the interior is just as luxurious and comfortable as the regular model.

While the coupe body may look cramped from the outside, the Cayenne GT offers similar rear-seat space compared to the regular model, although the cargo capacity is slightly limited. Like the regular Coupe models, the GT also gets a panoramic sunroof and four bucket seats as standard, limiting the capacity to just 4 passengers. Comfort levels are excellent with plenty of support for all passengers. As expected with a Porsche, quality is excellent with high-quality materials used everywhere. Like most modern SUVs, the GT also gets a simple layout with minimal switchgear along with touch-sensitive climate controls.

However, the Mercedes-AMG GLE Class trumps the rest with a cavernous trunk space of 33.3 cubic feet. All of these machines are super-luxurious and the Porsche also is an extremely opulent machine on the inside. Some standout interior features include:

  • Two-zone climate control with separate temperature settings for driver and front passenger
  • 8-way Sport Seats in front with memory package and Alcantara® seat centers with deviated stripe and perforation
  • Integrated headrests (front)
  • Heated seats (front and rear)
  • "turbo GT" logo stitched on headrests

Some standout infotainment features include:

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity
  • Sound Package Plus with 10 speakers and a total output of 150 watts
  • Satellite radio
  • Built-in navigation

2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo GT SUV Exterior

While the initial models of the Cayenne had a polarising design, over the years, Porsche has significantly improved it, and the third-generation Cayenne is one of the best-looking SUVs in its segment. The coupe models go even further with a sloping roofline and hunkered down stance. Like other GT Porsches, the Cayenne GT also gets several distinctive styling elements over the regular model.

Porsche has reworked the front fascia for a more aggressive design with huge side intakes that cool the carbon-ceramic brakes. From the side, the black fender arches house 22-inch alloy wheels finished in gold, giving the GT a unique look. At the rear, the Porsche has also updated the adaptive spoiler with carbon-fiber side plates and a gurney flap to help with aerodynamics. The GT also sits 0.7 inches lower than the regular model.

2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo GT SUV Final Verdict

With the Cayenne Turbo GT, Porsche aims to bridge the gap between performance SUVs like the BMW X6 M and the Lamborghini Urus. Even though the GT costs almost thrice the price of the base Cayenne, it offers plenty of performance and equipment to justify the price bump. With a few options, prices can easily cross the $200,000 mark, bringing it closer to the Lamborghini Urus. Overall, the Cayenne GT has all the makings of becoming the best performance SUV in its segment, and If you're in the market for a luxury SUV with supercar levels of performance, the new 2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT Coupe is definitely worth the wait.
