Detailed Review

Electric power is cleaner and undeniably, it is the future of the automobile industry. But with limited technology and higher costs, there is still a lot of time before the market leaps to “all electric” only. Porsche is a forerunner in the plug-in hybrid technology. In July 2014, the Cayenne E Hybrid was introduced which could muster a modest range of 14 miles (on all-electric mode).

The recipe has remained the same, the Porsche Cayenne E Hybrid wields the supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 sourced from Audi. This engine is supplemented by and an electric motor. This V6 engine is tuned to produce 333 hp and it is supplemented with an additional 95 hp from the electric motor. The Cayenne E-Hybrid loses out on combined horsepower to Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class GLE 550e 4MATIC.

The Porsche is on the heavier side of the scales, and it is followed by a similar pricing. That heavy mass will hinder that 'Porsche' like handling. So, be prepared to make a compromise there. But when it comes to straight-line acceleration, the combined prowess of the V6 engine and plugin hybrid motor pull it off the lights, briskly.

2018 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Features

The Cayenne Hybrid surely demands a premium price. But being a Porsche, there isn't much to complain. The manufacturer has set the quality benchmark, quite high. The Cayenne E hybrid is more than a pretty cabin, it also offers an admirable performance for a crossover SUV.

Engine and Transmission

The answer to stringent emission regulations is Plug-in Electric Hybrid (PHEV) Technology. Traditionally, the Porsche Group is known for their high-performance sports car but they have come a long way with the PHEV technology. At the heart of the E-Hybrid is a basic 3.0-liter Supercharged V6 motor which is supplemented by a big battery and electric motor. The electric motor is powered by a 10.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The V6 motor is tuned to deliver 333 hp @ 5500 rpm. The electric motor is capable of delivering 95 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque.

The Cayenne E- Hybrid is not a nimble thing, weighing in at 5,060 lbs. It competes in the heavyweight segment of PHEV crossover SUVs. All that weight is propelled forward by a combined 416 horsepower. The Cayenne Hybrid loses out on combined horsepower to the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class GLE 550e 4MATIC Hybrid. The BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance feels underpowered due to the lackluster 4 cylinder engine.

Acceleration

The Cayenne Hybrid's combined 416 hp pulls the behemoth SUV from a standstill to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. All the whirring and buzzing from the combined output from the electric and V6 motors propel this heavyweight to glorious 'SUV' speeds. The quarter-mile comes in 13.8 seconds. The peak torque of 435 lb-ft is accessible at 1250 rpm. But it is a different story when the battery is out of juice. The Cayenne quickly shows its sluggish nature.

Owing to its 20 horsepower surplus, the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class GLE 550e 4MATIC Hybrid is quicker by 0.3 seconds to reach 60 mph. Although, the Mercedes-Benz Hybrid is a lot heavier than the Porsche. It still beats the Porsche in straight line acceleration.

Ride and Handling

Porsche have distributed the weight, adequately. The distribution is 51 percent in the nose and 49 percent in the rear. The added weight from the battery pack helps in a better rear weight distribution. The Cayenne Hybrid is no sports car but it comes from a family with a long lineage of sports cars. Unmistakably, the sporting DNA comes embedded deep in the Cayenne. The steering is nicely weighted and you would always be sure of where those front tires are going. The Cayenne displays a rock-solid stability, even at higher speeds. All this hustle and you wouldn't feel a moment of discomfort inside the cabin. Rest assured, the Cayenne doesn't compromise on ride comfort.

Braking

All that bulk comes to an abrupt halt from 70 mph within 163 ft. The Cayenne Hybrid features the largest front disc brake in the segment. The braking feel is quite detached from the regular Cayenne. The Cayenne Hybrid has that regenerative feel, every time you push the brake pedal. Like other hybrids, the energy acquired from braking is used to replenish the battery. This distinctive feeling might take a while to adjust, especially for newer drivers.

2018 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Fuel Economy

4.8/10

The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid delivers a combined mpg of 46 while utilizing the power from the electric motor and the gasoline engine. Similarly, the Cayenne Hybrid delivers a combined mpg of 22 on standalone gasoline power.

MPG (combined) 22 24 21
MPGe (combined) 46 56 43

At most these figures are average when compared to the competition from BMW. But the Porsche does well when compared to Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Hybrid which is heavier and comes with a more powerfully tuned 3.0-liter V6 engine.

The Cayenne Hybrid can be used in the electric mode which Porsche calls "E- Power" setting. In this mode, the giant SUV runs only on electric power and can do a top speed of 78 mph. In this setting, when the engine runs on electric power only, the engine produces zero emission. Using this mode in highly packed city centers can be a really good move for the environment.

2018 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Interior

7.6/10

"While some class rivals have three rows of seats and fit seven or eight people, the Cayenne Hybrid only seats five across two rows. Wherever you sit, you'll be happy. Both rows of seats are comfortable and spacious, and three adults can ride in the back without issue."- Cars.USnews

Seating and Comfort

The Cayenne Hybrid comes with 8 - way adjustable front and passenger seats. The seats are comfortable, even for longer drives. But there is an option to get an adaptive seating which takes comfort to another level by offering 14/18 way adjustable seats.

When compared to the competition, the Cayenne Hybrid offers decent comfort to the occupants. Instead of being overly lavish, the interior setup is more on cozier side, with a good room for child seats.

Infotainment

The Cayenne E-Hybrid comes with a standard 7-inch touchscreen with high-quality glass surface. Porsche's aesthetic cabin appeal is second to none. The Cayenne E-Hybrid's interior is the testament to the same artistry that brings leather stitchings, wooden and metallic panel inserts. All these elements come together to elevate the cabin ambiance. This infotainment system comes with single CD/DVD drive, 2 SD card slots, mobile phone preparation via Bluetooth, AUX/USB/iPod interface, HD Radio, and SiriusXM satellite radio receiver.

Cargo Capacity

The battery pack for the electric motor adds excess weight to the Cayenne E-Hybrid. The battery pack eats into the cargo space. If cargo space is something high on your list, then the Cayenne Hybrid doesn't offer generous cargo space. The Mercedes-Benz GLE Hybrid offers the best cargo space with/without rear seats intact.

"Porsche Cayenne wears the same headlight design as other contemporary Porsches by featuring a quad-element array. Its long hood reaches back into a stretched cabin that's sleeker than its rivals, without resorting to a trendycoupe stance. In back, there are small elements from the automaker's sports cars, mostly limited to the small hatch spoilers." - TheCarConnection

Dimensions and Weight

One of the things that work against Hybrid vehicles is the added weight which comes from the addition of the electric motor and battery pack. Additionally, this battery pack eats into the cargo space. The Cayenne E-Hybrid weighs 5,060 lbs. which by the Hybrid SUV standards is a respectable number.

2018 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Competition

Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid vs. BMW X5

The BMW X5 xDrive40e sports a 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder and a Hybrid Electric Motor which produce a combined 308 horsepower. Owing to a smaller engine, the BMW is not quick off the line as you floor the pedal. It loses out to the Porsche in straight line acceleration, but it offers a better fuel economy of combined MPGe of 56 and 24 when running it on gasoline only. Even the cargo space is better than the Porsche. The BMW presents itself as a more practical offering than the Cayenne E - Hybrid.

Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid vs. Mercedes GLE Class Hybrid

The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Hybrid is the heaviest crossover SUV in this segment. Weighing 5,456 lbs. the Mercedes-Benz Hybrid comes with a 3.0 liter Biturbo V6 with a higher tune. When it comes to Hybrids in this segment, the Mercedes-Benz Hybrid posts the best naught to 60 mph figures and also offers a generous cargo space. The additional curb weight hurts the efficiency of the Mercedes-Benz GLE Hybrid. This Hybrid is a far cry from the frugal numbers posted by the BMW and Porsche.

2018 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Final Verdict

The Porsche Cayenne Hybrid isn't a looker but it has a pretty decent cabin and a good powertrain on offer. The unsung hero of this crossover SUV is the 8-speed transmission that provides accurate shifts. Either you shift the gears, or you leave it to its own logic, this transmission never disappoints. With 416 hp on tap, you would never feel short of power. Even when you are driving it hard, this machine still has a potential to go further.

The Cayenne E-Hybrid is a good option for those who have a limited city commute with the facility to charge the vehicle at both the destinations. Going "all electric" will mean lackluster acceleration and a top speed of 78 mph.

The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid commands a premium price. It has a marvelous cabin but priced at $79,900 it is a little short on standard features which need to be bought in at a greater expense. If you are considering the Cayenne E-Hybrid purely for the luxury with added performance then you should definitely compare it with the 2019 model which produces 455 of combined horsepower.

Pros

Glitch-free transition from electric power to gasoline and vice versa

Great acceleration despite the heavy curb weight

47 mpg-e mileage when running on combined power from the gasoline engine and electric motor

Cons

Poor mileage while running on only gasoline

A monstrous curb weight that makes it shy around the corners

Hideous acid green brake calipers might not be suited to everyone's taste

What's New?

No major changes
