The Porsche Cayenne has been an old name in the game of luxury SUVs, with each model year getting more powerful and more agile than the previous one. The SUV had captured the essence of the segment and also netted a lot of sales for the German manufacturer despite the price premium it commands over the other German rivals. The Porsche Cayenne Hybrid builds on the same legacy and adds a greener option for the people who like to go fast and save the environment.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Porsche Cayenne Plug-In Hybrid is available in two trims - the E Hybrid and the Turbo S E Hybrid - with the prices starting at $81,800. The base engine is a turbocharged 3.0L V6 that is mated to an electric motor that gives it the extra boost and increases the MPGs. At that price, the Cayenne Hybrid goes against the 2022 BMW X5 xDrive 45e, the 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge T8 Inscription, and the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport PHEV

2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid SUV Features

The 2022 Porsche Cayenne Plug-In Hybrid has the most eco-friendly Porsche power plants under the hood and can be had in two flavors - the Cayenne E Hybrid and the Cayenne Turbo S E Hybrid. The E Hybrid is based on the Base trim and carries all its features as standard while adding a couple of upgrades namely, the Porsche Active Suspension Management and the Sport Chrono Package with Sport Plus drive mode. The Turbo SE Hybrid is based on the Turbo and brings in all its features, while also adding Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control for improving its cornering abilities.

The E Hybrid models come with many features as standard because they build on well-equipped models but if one wants to add more features, Porsche provides various packages namely, the Assistance Package, Premium Package, and the Premium Package Plus which raise the MSRP by anywhere between $6,250 and $8,950. These Packages add various features like Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), Power Steering Plus, panoramic roof, auto-dimming mirrors, comfort access, night vision assist, 14-way power seats (14-way) with memory, and 4-zone climate control.

We recommend

Seeing the huge price gap between the two hybrid models, our obvious choice will be the Cayenne E Hybrid that is based on the Base trim. This trim has all the necessary equipment and amenities that one would expect from an SUV of this segment while also carrying a very potent engine that has oodles of performance. To this, we’d recommend adding the Premium Package that makes the SUV all the more comfortable for long drives and weekend trips.

2022 Porsche Cayenne Plug-In Hybrid Release date

The 2022 Porsche Cayenne Plug-In Hybrid is expected to hit the American shores by the Fall of 2021.

2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid SUV Engine and Performance

The 2022 Porsche Cayenne Plug-In Hybrid is powered by a turbocharged 3.0L V6 that is mated to a synchronous AC motor that helps the SUV produce more punch in the lower revs. Combined, this setup makes 455 horsepower and 516 lb-ft torque that sends the power to all the four wheels via 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission. There’s a twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8 on offer as well that adds a significant amount of power to the mix, taking the total output to 670 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque. This output is sent to all four wheels as well via the same Tiptronic S transmission as seen on the V6.

The Cayenne is a very easy SUV to drive in the city with sharp steering and progressive brakes. The view out of the front is impeccable but the same is not true about the rear windshield due to the big blind spots and small opening. The gearbox is a charm in the city and shifts as smooth as butter. The suspension on the Cayenne is very soft and soaks up the undulations pretty well, but still has a firm edge to it for the twisty roads and enthusiastic driving. The turning circle is manageable for the size, making the Cayenne very easy to maneuver through tight spaces.

On the highway, the electronic boost from the electric motor is very satisfying and gives an instant punch to the SUV for quick overtakes and maintaining the highway speeds. The gearbox is very quick to respond and shifts in a jiffy. The steering is well-weighted and the suspension’s firm edge gives a lot of stability to the SUV even at high speeds. The cabin is impressively quiet with the 19-inch wheels being the only ones making a ruckus with the road noise that creeps in the cabin.

All the SUVs have forced-induction for squeezing out the most performance, with the XC90 upping the game with both a supercharger and a turbocharger on board. The Porsche Cayenne is the fastest of all the SUVs in the segment with a more powerful powertrain setup and a massive torque figure that is made available at very low RPMs and clocks the 0-60mph run in 4.4 seconds. The Bimmer also does a very good job in accelerating quickly given the power deficit from the Volvo, which isn’t far behind with its smaller but twin-charged engine that has nearly 3% more power. The Land Rover doesn’t match the outright acceleration numbers of the rivals despite having very similar numbers to the Volvo.

2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid SUV Fuel Economy

One thing that the plug-in hybrids excel at is fuel economy with the Porsche Cayenne being no exception. The 2022 Cayenne Hybrid has an EPA rating of 21 MPG combined, with an MPGe of 46 miles and an estimated battery range of 13 miles. The SUV comes fitted with a massive 19.8-gallon fuel tank that aids with the range and provides peace of mind throughout the journey.

Range (Combined) (Miles)

Of all the hybrids, the Volvo’s twin charging does help in squeezing out the most miles per gallon of fuel with the EPA estimates having a massive lead over the Porsche and the Bimmer. The Volvo can easily do nearly 500 miles of combined range from its 18.5-gallon fuel tank, which is 130 miles more than the Bimmer with a similar capacity. The Range Rover comes just behind the Volvo in terms of the overall range which is massively helped by the biggest fuel tank in the comparison. The Cayenne’s bigger fuel tank does give it an advantage over the Bimmer but the powertrain isn’t as efficient as the Volvo’s.

2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid SUV Interior

The 2022 Porsche Cayenne Plug-In Hybrid comes in a very luxurious segment with all the rivals fighting it out in terms of the craftsmanship inside along with the other interior amenities. The door panels have very clean lines with no complications from the different trims whatsoever. There is only one wood piece that surrounds the aluminum-finished door handle and the buttons for memory seats. The grab handle and the armrest are covered in very soft leather below which is a decent-sized cubby.

2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid SUV Front Row Seats

The dashboard carries on the same soft-touch material and leather treatment as seen on the door panels along with the trim piece extending towards the center of the dash. The AV vents are huge and have been given a smooth design to give a visually soothing effect. The center of the dashboard houses the massive 12.4-inch infotainment screen and a couple of AC vents in the center. The center console has a lot of gloss black and houses the controls for the infotainment system along with the display for the climate controls, heated seats, and drive modes. There is a small cubby in the center along with a couple of cup holders. The center armrest is covered in leather and can hold your mobile phone.

The seats are fabulous right from the base trim itself. The E Hybrid carries a soft leatherette material which has the Porsche logo embossed onto the headrests. The whole seat is a one-piece design with visible leather stitching and very comfortable seating surfaces. The shape of the seats is very comfortable for long drives while also providing ample support for the occupants in case the drive is enthusiastic. In terms of features, power-adjustable seats are standard whereas seat heating and ventilation are optional.

The rear doors open wide and the entry to the rear row is very comfortable with a low floor. The cabin space is amazing even for people 6 feet tall despite the panoramic sunroof equipped. The shoulder room is also very spacious with lots of space for the occupants to stretch out. The front seats have a one-piece back which looks visually appealing but lacks a storage pocket. The rear occupants also have a digital command center for adjusting the climate control along with two rear AC vents, a couple of USB points, a 12V socket, and a small cubby. The rear seats are very comfortable and can recline for added comfort.

The liftgate has an electric assist and can be opened with the press of a button on the key fob. The shape of the cargo area makes it very comfortable to load and unload stuff that is further aided by a folding parcel shelf and a low cargo floor. There are nets on both sides that help in increasing the versatility along with two tethering points. Under the cargo floor is a spare wheel with all the necessary tools to help you out in a puncture.

Third Row (Headroom/Shoulder Room/Legroom; inches)

Cargo Capacity (cubic feet)

Porsche doesn't make the interior dimensions of its car public but from what the cabin space on offer is, we are very happy with the result with a cavernous seating in the front and the rear, along with decently big cargo space. The Volvo is the only one with a three-row configuration and for that reason, the cargo space is minimal. The BMW provides the highest trunk volume of 33.9 cu.-ft, followed by the Range Rover Sport PHEV at 24.8 cu.-ft. That said, the Porsche’s cabin is a very sporty and nice place to be in and some of the highlighting features of this cabin are:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Ambient lighting
  • Power-adjustable steering wheel
  • Heated front and rear seats
  • Leather upholstery
  • Ambient lighting
  • Power liftgate

2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid SUV Exterior

The new Cayenne Plug-In Hybrid looks like a Porsche and has a very distinct front-end. The headlights are big and carry Porsche’s sophisticated headlight technology that is inspired by the racecar heritage. The vents in the bumper are functional and have active shutters which open them up at high speeds. The hood has clean body lines with the Porsche logo in the middle.

2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid SUV Side View

The Cayenne Hybrid has green brake calipers which are visible through the 19-inch alloy wheels the SUV comes equipped with. The fender is a bit flared out and the body lines continue to the side and make their way to the rear. There is gloss black around the windows which suits the overall colors well. The roof slopes down and has a spoiler attached to it. The rear is typical Porsche as well with a light bar running across the rear with the company’s branding in it. The final touches are given by the two exhaust pipes in the rear bumper.

The Bimmer is the heaviest of the lot with it the only one weighing upwards of 5,500 lbs. The XC90’s complex engine and an extra row of seating do not increase the weight significantly, making it the lightest. The Cayenne falls somewhere in between and is more compact in terms of proportions while having the shortest wheelbase of 114 inches and the most distinctive styling. It sports a ground clearance of 8.4 inches similar to the BMW X5 xDrive 45e and the Range Rover Sport PHEV but is almost an inch smaller than the Volvo. Some of the highlighting exterior features include:

  • 19-/21-inch wheels
  • Air suspension
  • Porsche Active Suspension Management
  • Upgraded brakes
  • Adaptive LED headlights
  • LED taillights

2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid SUV Safety

The 2022 Porsche Cayenne Plug-In Hybrid gets all the Porsche-exclusive technology that the German manufacturer has developed from years of experience in motorsports. The SUV comes with all the required safety features expected in this segment, with a forward collision mitigation system and parking sensors being offered as standard. While the standard list might seem a little underwhelming to some, some of the other safety features that can be added on are:

  • Rear steering
  • 360-degree camera system
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Porsche Dynamic Lighting System+ (PDLS+)
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System

2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid SUV Competition

2022 Porsche Cayenne Plug-in hybrid Vs. 2022 BMW X5 xDrive 45e

The BMW gives a very tough competition to the Porsche in terms of craftsmanship and performance. The acceleration isn’t far behind and the interior is just as good as the Cayenne, for $15,000 less!

2022 BMW X5 xDrive 45e

While the Bimmer might be the more affordable option, the Cayenne provides the most engaging driving experience with sharp steering, nimble handling, responsive brakes, and a gem of a powertrain to make things smooth.

2022 Porsche Cayenne Plug-in hybrid Vs. 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge

The Volvo XC90 Recharge is focused more on being an all-out luxury tourer with seating for 6 people and a very lavish interior with the nicest of materials on offer.

2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge

The engine of the XC90 might be small but offers strong performance and the highest MPG numbers. Despite a strong engine, Porsche’s style, interior design, and driving dynamics remain unbeaten by the Volvo.

2022 Porsche Cayenne Plug-in hybrid Vs. 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport PHEV

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport PHEV is more focused on being a luxury off-roader that can also go green.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport PHEV

The boot space is bigger than the Cayenne and the cabin is more spacious and better looking. The Cayenne is a sporty SUV that accelerates quickly, is very agile around corners, and can easily do track days with your family inside.

2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid SUV Final Verdict

The 2022 Porsche Cayenne Plug-In Hybrid is an amazing vehicle with a strong power plant, effortless gearbox, sporty dynamics, decent cabin space, and the latest technology on offer. The power plant is decently fuel-efficient and the cargo area is huge enough. The only zonk is the rearwards visibility and the massive premium it demands over its rivals. If you have a Porsche kind of budget, then the Cayenne Hybrid is a no-brainer but if not, the Bimmer makes better sense.
