The 2022 Porsche Macan is the automaker’s take on the compact luxury SUV segment. The 2022 Macan which will be arriving in early 2022 has a starting MSRP of $54,900, excluding delivery charges. For a price bump of $2,800 from last year the 2022 Macan has got a minor exterior redesign while the most interesting changes happened under the hood. The base engine has become more powerful than last year. While the Macan S and Macan GTS both now get the more powerful engines from GTS and Turbo trims respectively from last year.

Moving inside, the center console has been redesigned and also you get a new gear selector. Apart from the above changes, everything else remains the same on the 2022 Macan. This means it will impress you with its performance, luxury, and comfort. It has all the traits of a Porsche right from the design language to the power delivery. Acceleration is instantaneous and quick but as you go higher in the trim ladder the 0-60 MPH time shortens from sub-six seconds to sub-four seconds.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Porsche Macan with the power and torque bump from its 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine has risen to become the most powerful compact luxury SUV with a turbo-four engine. The base Macan with sub six seconds 0-60 MPH timing truly punches above its weight. While being a Porsche it is, without doubt, the best handling SUV in the segment and when had with the adaptive air suspension and ride height adjustment, the ride quality is improved even further. That said, the compact luxury SUV segment is buzzing with competition and the 2022 Macan goes head-on against the likes of the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class. Let's see how it stacks up against them in this review.

Other than the standard features listed in the table below Porsche offers a bevy of optional features and packages for the Macan. A few of them worth looking at include driver assistance features like parallel and perpendicular park assist, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane change, and lane-keep assist.

Engine and Performance

But no matter which engine you choice, the Macan's chassis is an athletic partner that goads you to hit apex after apex - Car and Driver

The 2022 Porsche Macan offers three engine options. The base Macan is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that is capable of punching out 261 hp of power and 291 lb.-ft. of torque. From last year the base Macan sees a bump of 13 hp in power and 18 lb-ft in torque. With this where the 2021 Macan did 0-60 MPH sprint in 6.3 seconds, it now does the same in 5.8 seconds. While the time taken to cover a quarter-mile has gone down from 15.1 seconds to 14.2 seconds.

The Macan S gets a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that punches out 375 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque which was previously equipped in the 2021 Macan GTS. The 2022 Macan GTS, on the other hand, gets a performance-oriented 2.9 liter V6 that cranks out 434 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque and this is the engine that was seen on the 2021 Porsche Macan Turbo.

All three engines come paired with Porsche’s 7-speed PDK transmission which means dual-clutch transmission in Porsche terms. It is hands down the best transmission in its competition which generates seamless and smooth gear ratios. All the power is channeled to AWD which is standard across all the trims for providing better off-roading capabilities too. Being an SUV, the 2022 Macan is expected to drive like one. But here is where the Macan surprises you with sedan-like agility and forgiving ride quality. Being a Porsche the Macan handles like one but the ride quality, for the most part, remains comfortable. While the lighter steering wheel is easy but at the same time feels connected and precise.

Fuel Economy

The base engine in the 2022 Porsche Macan will return a City/Hwy/Combined mileage of 19 / 23 / 21 MPG. While the higher trims like the Macan S return 17/22 MPG in the city/highway. The Macan GTS returns the same city gas mileage as the Macan S while on the highway it sees a drop of just 1 MPG. When it comes to range, the Porsche Macan’s huge 19.8-gallon fuel tank helps it deliver a respectable range in the segment.

In comparison, the BMW X3 offers the highest mileage in the city and on the highway. That being said, the base model of the 2022 Porsche Macan falls behind the other cars in terms of fuel economy but surprisingly it has a large fuel tank among all to compensate for the lower gas mileage figures.

This year, the Macan adopts Porsche's newest design philosophy, which might be described as "waterfall-of-haptic-buttons" - Edmunds

The 2022 Porsche Macan sees some minor changes to the cabin. For instance, it gets a new steering wheel with audio controls that offer some important controls, a new gear selector that looks plush, a new digital instrument cluster that comes as standard, and a newly updated center touchscreen. As seen in the picture below, the interior of the 2022 Macan not only looks premium but also better than the previous generation. As with every other Porsche, it would also get an analog watch that adorns the interior of the car.

The infotainment system on the 2022 Porsche Macan features a new digital instrument cluster for better readability and better graphics. The center infotainment touch screen also gets a refresh and would be a treat to your eyes. Apart from that, everything is pretty much the same.  As standard, It comes with features like 10-speaker audio system, Wireless Apple CarPlay, Four USB ports, and a Navigation system. While a 14-speaker Bose sound system and a 16-speaker Burmester surround sound system are available as an option.

As for the seats, the front seats of the 2022 Macan are the best place to be in be it in terms of space or comfort. The rear seats are at par in terms of comfort but feel cramped which isn't the case with other rivals in the segment. Behind the rear seats, the 2022 Macan offers a meager 17.6 cubic feet of cargo space, and with the rear seats folded it can be increased to 52.9 cubic feet.

The BMW X3 has the best front-row headroom space on offer measuring 41.1 inches while the shoulder and legroom are almost similar here in all the SUVs. While all three cars offer a more or less similar second-row space, the BMW also offers the least rear legroom. Furthermore, the cargo capacity of the Macan is the smallest followed by the GLC 300 while the BMW X3 offers the highest 28.7 cubic feet of cargo space.

Interior Features:

  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • 14-way power seats with memory package
  • SiriusXM Radio
  • Porsche Car Connect
  • Heated rear seats and steering wheel
  • Three-zone automatic climate control
  • Ambient interior lighting

The Macan is a handsome crossover that's immediately recognizable as a product from the famed manufacturer of the 911 - CarBuzz

The exterior is one of the most exciting things about the 2022 Porsche Macan as it gets a lot of tweaks to the exterior design yet has an uncanny resemblance to its elder sibling the Porsche Cayenne. For 2022, the Macan gets redesigned vents for both front and rear bumpers with an even more efficient diffuser. Sport design mirrors that come as standard looks spectacular and goes well with the exterior design of the car. Moving on to the exterior dimensions.

The 2022 Macan measures 184.9-inches in length and 64-inches tall. However, it appears to be the widest car in its segment measuring 76.2-inches which subsequently helps with better handling of the car by reducing body roll when compared to its counterparts. On the downside, it is not the lightest in its segment and weighs 4099 lbs, which is surprising as generally POorshce are known to keep their weight in check.

In terms of exterior dimensions, the BMW X3 sits right at the top of its segment and has a strong road presence as well as cabin space and cargo space owing to its bigger body size. While on the other end the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 is not only the lightest but also happens to be the dimensionally smaller car. Yet the 113.1-inches of wheelbase it manages to coax out helps it liberate a spacious cabin.

Exterior Features:

  • 19- or 21-inch alloy wheels
  • Lip Spoiler
  • Deep Tinted Glass
  • Rain Detecting Variable Intermittent Wipers
  • All-LED exterior lights
  • Panoramic sunroof

Falling under the luxury SUV segment the 2022 Porsche Macan hasn't been crash-tested by either of the federal agencies for the current year or earlier model years. But that doesn't deter Porsche from equipping the Macan with a bevy of standard safety features. Although one should keep in mind that most of the advanced driver aids are still optional on the Macan as is the case with the majority of the Porsche cars.

Safety Features on offer with the 2022 Porsche Macan are-

  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Porsche Traction Management
  • Trailer Stability Management
  • Adaptive Cruise control
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • ParkAssist with reversing camera

2022 Porsche Macan vs 2022 BMW X3

The BMW X3 is one of the most appealing SUVs in BMW’s lineup and has its personality and character. It offers great performance, looks, and a classy-looking cabin. The X3 is not only bigger but also offers a spacious cabin and cargo space in comparison to the Macan.

The turbocharged inline-4 of the X3 offers a smooth and refined engine performance and at the same time offers a decent fuel economy and you get all these perks at one of the most affordable prices. Thus between the two, the X3 is a more practical choice.

2022 Porsche Macan vs 2022 Audi Q5

The Audi Q5 may not look aggressive or striking as a Porsche or a BMW. But under the subdued demeanor, it packs plenty of performance and great driving dynamics. It is quicker than the Macan and also happens to return better gas mileage compared to it.

The cabin space is decent on the Q5 and so is the cabin quality On the plus side, it is the cheapest car in its segment at the moment. Overall, it is an all-rounded package and would meet the standards of a luxury family car.

2022 Porsche Macan vs 2022 Mercedes Benz GLC-Class

The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class is one of the bland-looking luxury SUVs out there but it offers oodles of luxury at your disposal. Right from the engine performance, to fuel efficiency and the interior dimensions, everything is modest and not the best in class.

It is also more expensive than the Audi and BMW but still offers a more luxurious cabin experience than the two to justify the higher price tag. But between the Macan and GLC-Class, the former is a better pick in all respect.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Porsche Macan is the closest you can get to a sports car in its segment and it is definitely a no-brainer when it comes to performance and handling. It is the most engaging car to drive in the segment. However, the fuel economy being on the downside, the higher price tag, and the smaller cabin and cargo space could be a deterrent for some buyers  But ff you want a premium and practical SUV with a Porsche pedigree then no doubt this is the perfect entry-level Porsche for you.
