The Porsche Panamera is truly a one-of-a-kind car because it is the first one that introduced sports cars like driving dynamics and enthusiasm in the luxury sedan segment. Given how well the automotive market had taken to the car, most of the manufacturers jumped aboard on the idea and introduced their own versions of the same but the charm of the original still remains intact. The 2022 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid sedan is one of the most sophisticated models in the Porsche Panamera line-up and promises a lot of technology.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

Carrying over with very minor changes for the 2022 model year, prices for the Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid start at an MSRP of $113,300. It is also available in a wagon body style as well as in more powerful versions which are reviewed separately. It represents the best of technology from the German brand and competes against the likes of plug-in hybrids from the luxury manufacturers such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class S580e, BMW 7 Series 745e, and Audi A8 L 60 TFSI e.

2022 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid Sedan Features

The Porsche Panamera lineup is quite large. Mainly, it comprises three different trim line-ups. These are the sedan, wagon, and hybrid trims. Each one of these has a few other sub-trims within it and among the hybrids, the 4S is the second trim after the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, and below the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.

Since the 4S E-Hybrid is a standalone trim level it is not split into any massively different trims. However, there comes the distinction of an Executive package that comes at an extra $11,300. The details of this package are discussed below. The base trim itself is pretty well loaded with eight-way power-adjustable front seats, leather upholstery, 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, dual panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, and so on.

Key Features

8-way Power-adjustable heated front seats with leather upholstery

Adds/upgrades to Base trim:

12-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM, Bluetooth, and HomeLink

14-way power-adjustable seats with heating and ventilation and seat memory

Porsche Advanced Cockpit Control

Wood and aluminum inlays in the cabin

20-inch Aluminium Alloy Wheels with Summer Performance Tires

Nappa Leather upholstery on all surfaces

Dual Panoramic sunroof

BOSE Surround Sound System with 14-speakers and 715 W output

LED headlights with 4-point DRLs and 3D LED taillights with integral 4-point brake lights and light strip

Heated Rear Seats with the optional 4-seater arrangement

Dual-zone climate control with separate temperature settings for driver and front passenger

Remote Keyless ignition

Multifunction steering wheel with shift-paddles and soft-touch leather upholstery

LED Headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus

Porsche Connect Plus with Navigation, Carfinder, Remote Vehicle Status, and Vehicle Tracking Status

Dual-zone automatic climate control

7.2 kW on-board charger

We recommend

When deciding which trim to buy, it is very hard to look past the new base trim level, as it has everything one would need. One more thing that we have to keep in mind is that the Porsche Panamera is expensive right from the get-go and without taking many options you will reach price levels that are unheard of in the segment. This base trim itself is very well loaded and comes with features like adaptive suspension, 20-inch wheels, LED headlights, leather upholstery, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, and so on. If you take a look at the options list from Porsche, it has some of the most expensive options that you will find in the automotive world.

2022 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid sedan Release date

Porsche had initially to bring the new Panamera hybrid versions by the fall of 2021 but due to the pandemic restrictions, the release has been pushed further ahead. As part of official releases so far, we expect that this release date might be around early 2022. This would mean that there would be a slight delay in bringing the car to the dealerships after this and customers will expect delivery only by the first quarter of 2022.

2022 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid Sedan Engine and Performance

When it comes to the performance of the Porsche Panamera, especially the hybrid versions, one is mostly in awe. Because it is powered by a 2.9 L turbocharged V6 engine that has been mated to the electric motor. The drivetrain layout is all-wheel-drive and is a very capable one with that, and manages to deliver engaging driving dynamics along with traction in all situations. Its engine produces an output of 552 hp and 553 pound-feet of torque. These are the highest numbers in class.

Its acceleration is extremely quick because of the electric motors being very quick to deploy the power. This results in a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.5 seconds which puts it battling against supercars and not other sedans. The car is good for a top speed of 185 mph which is again very fast for something that is luxurious and practical at the same time. Even with its heavyweight, the handling of the car is amazing and the steering is very responsive and direct. The brakes are also very confidence-inspiring.

One can see that among the competitors, the new Mercedes S-Class is priced significantly higher but is a much more luxurious and higher-quality offering. However, when it comes to performance, it is the Porsche that is a significantly better-performing car in every single aspect. All three of its competitors are around the same territory when it comes to performance but the Porsche is completely in a league of its own. It is not only more powerful and faster accelerating but also more engaging to drive.

2022 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid Sedan Fuel Economy

Generally, when we have talked about sedans that have the same kind of performance as supercars, their biggest disadvantage has always been in terms of fuel efficiency. They end up drinking as much as they could and end up burning a hole in their pocket. However, one advantage of cars from Porsche nowadays is that they offer excellent fuel efficiency as well as performance. The new Panamera is no exception and the hybrid versions have an EPA estimated fuel efficiency rating of 21 MPG in the city, 24 on the highway, and 23 combined. These are excellent figures and are good enough for a range of 506 miles which is class-leading.

We find that the most powerful car in this class is also one of the most fuel-efficient. Even though the fuel efficiency figures for the Audi and the Mercedes are not out yet, the Porsche still has the largest tank and offers an excellent overall range. Its fuel efficiency numbers are also very excellent. The BMW has better numbers on the highway but fails to deliver anything close to the same in the city. It also suffers due to a tiny fuel type of just 12.1 gallons. Hence the Panamera is well-suited for somebody who will do the longest touring with their car.

2022 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid Sedan Interior

Porsche has never let us down with anything about their interiors and the Panamera is no exception. Being their most luxurious offering, Porsche has made it a point to concentrate on giving customers the best experience inside the car. This has been made possible with excellent fit and finishes as well as a very ergonomic design. Ingress and egress are also very easy and the seating position is also convenient. There is a slight lack of space inside the cabin but the driving position is very nice.

The seats are very supportive and visibility is also great from the cabin. However, some controls are a bit hard to reach and bring down the total ergonomics of this cabin. The infotainment systems of this car are quite decent and offer great assistance. The touch capacitive controls in the center console may be a thing that could be of annoyance to some users. Cargo capacity is decent at 14.3 ft.³ but nothing exceptional. This is a bit down from the 18.3 ft.³ offered in the non-hybrid versions.

The cabin of all cars in this category are quite spacious but it is arguable that the competitors have slightly better interiors. The Mercedes Benz with a brand-new model change has been redesigned and promises the best interior experience that one can find in the automotive world right now. It is also adequately spacious and Porsche does not disclose any of the interior dimensions of any of their cars. The BMW offers the most cargo capacity while the Porsche is not far behind. The Audi offers the least in this aspect. Some standard features include:

  • Ventilated seat type - heated and cooled
  • Alcantara headliner
  • Porsche Advanced Cockpit Control
  • Heated and Powered seats
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Leather and Alcantara upholstery
  • Alcantara wrapped steering wheel
  • Dual panoramic sunroof

What’s there to keep you entertained in the 2022 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid sedan?

When it comes to infotainment options, there is plenty on offer. There are most of the modern features that one would hope for including USB C ports, 12 V outlets, wireless charging pad, built-in navigation and so on. The primary screen is large, approximately 12.3 inches in size. The driver information display is also digital and provides an adequate amount of information. The audio system is also quite nice but the options tend to get very expensive. However, many of its competitors offer much better features in terms of infotainment. Some features of the infotainment system include:

  • 12.3" touchscreen infotainment system with PCM
  • 10-speaker audio system
  • Optional Burmester and Bose audio system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility
  • Amazon Alexa integration
  • Navigation
  • Rear many of its competitors offer much better -view camera

2022 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid Sedan Exterior

The Panamera is the Porsche 911 of luxury sedans and looks unique. It very slowly evolves its design over several model years rather than bringing a straight up revolution. We feel that the wagon body style suits this design even more but the sedans are also good-looking. It is also quite large in size but does not carry the penalty in terms of weight. It has excellent road presence and is available in a wide variety of colors like every other Porsche. The standard 20 inch wheels also make sure that the car has a stance like no other.

Ground Clearance

The Porsche is smaller than all of its competitors but we also have to remember that it is a bit more expensive than everything except the Mercedes. It also has the shortest wheelbase which makes it much more agile and nimble than its competitors. We can see that the competitors are excellent cars in terms of luxury but do not have the same advantage in balancing performance. In terms of weight, the Audi is rather on the heavier side and weighs 5335 lbs. Some standout features include:

  • LED headlights with LED DRLs
  • LED taillights
  • Porsche Dynamic Lighting System
  • 20" alloy wheels
  • Optional 21" alloy wheels
  • High-performance summer tires
  • 25 different alloy wheel designs
  • Rain sensing wipers
  • Panoramic sunroof

2022 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid Sedan Safety

When it comes to safety, Porsche has always made sure that it does offer adequate safety. It has been a responsible manufacturer that has provided speed but also the means to bring it down and the protection that customers need during an emergency situation. However, being a car that is produced in very small volumes, it has not been evaluated by the NHTSA or the IIHS yet. It comes with most of the advanced safety features available in the market today as standard features and one can rest assured that it is a safe car. Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Side-impact beams
  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control
  • Backup Camera
  • Traction Control
  • Stability Control
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Airbags
  • Blind-spot monitoring

2022 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid Sedan Competition

2022 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid sedan Vs. 2022 Audi A8 TFSI e

As we have observed, the Audi has not exactly managed to match up to the Porsche in terms of any aspect. In fact, it is the least sold luxury car in the segment and is in dire need of an update. However, it is offered at a price that is quite attractive and would make sense for a buyer who’s looking for a good deal. For that price, we still feel that the Audi is a good pick but as the car does not have much to compete with against the Porsche.

2022 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid sedan vs. 2022 Mercedes-Benz S580e

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the car you have to pick if you want to look at something that is extremely luxurious and sophisticated. However, it does not have the same balance in terms of performance or the dynamics to match its looks. It offers much better convenience features and so on over the Porsche, but the blend that it offers in terms of an athletic luxury sedan is unmatched. The Mercedes Benz is still a winner from a practical point of view and would be an excellent choice.

2022 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid sedan Vs. 2022 BMW 745e?

The BMW 7-Series is an excellent car but it is not as powerful or engaging to drive as the Porsche. It is much lighter but has a very small fuel tank and some other sacrifices in terms of practicality. It also offers very little range when you compare it to the Porsche. In terms of interiors, it has managed to offer a little more. However, we are not impressed by the looks of the BMW and the Porsche makes for an attractive car at the end of the day.

2022 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid Sedan Final Verdict

The 2022 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid sedan is offered at a premium over its competitors but manages to justify the premium with the package it offers. It is the car that started the unique blend of performance and luxury in the full-size sedan segment and manages to be the benchmark to this day. It offers excellent fuel efficiency, cargo capacity, and other practical aspects while also being a supercar beater in terms of raw athleticism. But it takes someone who appreciates engineering to realize how much that is worth. It is one of the best cars we have ever seen.
