Porsche has been renowned across the globe for their high-performance driver’s delight cars and as far as EVs are concerned, getting both these attributes in one car was very difficult. With the launch of the Porsche Taycan over a year ago, enthusiasts have started taking interest in the electric mobility segment as the Taycan not only has rapid acceleration as any other EV, it also drives like a true Porsche. The 4S suffix signifies the all-wheel-drive S variant of the Taycan, similar to other Porsches but in a midsize sedan guise.

Although the car is still as good as new, Porsche has worked on it to further refine the overall experience with the car. The new Taycan 4S now gets an improved infotainment system with Android Auto also making its way. There’s better thermal management this year which quickens the charging process and yet keeps the battery in healthy condition. The 2022 Taycan 4S is priced at an MSRP of $105,150 and it competes against the likes of the Audi E-Tron GT, Lucid Air Touring, and Tesla Model S Long Range.

2022 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan Features

The Taycan 4S sits right above the base trim and features dual motors on each axle and the choice of two battery packs. There is plenty of technology and creature comforts on offer and as is the case with most other Porsche cars, there is an exhaustive list of optional features and packages that can be opted to better spec the car while there are plenty of standard safety and cabin features and driver aids to make the car feel worth the six-figure sum.

The Premium Package as expected adds all the creature comforts like the front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera, cornering lights, speed-dependent headlight range control, adverse weather function, and headlight washer system, front and rear heated seats, front-seat ventilation amongst many and costs $7,170. The Performance Package on the other hand costs $6,430 and includes rear-axle steering, torque vectoring, and active anti-roll bars to enhance the driving dynamics.

The 4S trim in itself is pretty loaded with the features that one might need for most daily driving scenarios but opting for the Premium package adds a lot more value to the car. If absolute performance is what you seek from your EV, opting for the Performance package should definitely spice things up for you.

2022 Porsche Taycan 4S Release Date

The changes made to the car this year are superficial and hence the 2022 Taycan 4S should hit the market by the fall of 2021 with the deliveries beginning after that.

2022 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan Engine and Performance

6.0/10

The Porsche Taycan 4S is powered by two permanent magnet synchronous electric motors positioned on each axle that is mated to a two-speed automatic transmission. Together, depending on the battery capacity, the car produces 522 hp and 472 lb-ft as standard or 562 hp and 479 lb-ft with the bigger battery, which powers all four wheels.

Porsche has known to be conservative with its performance figures and that is true with the Taycan 4S as well as the car turned out to be two-tenth of a second quicker than the 3.8 seconds claimed by the manufacturer for the 0-60 mph sprint. It also takes just 12.1 seconds to cross the finish line across the quarter-mile, while the top speed is limited to 155 mph.

The performance from the Taycan is breathtaking as it propels into the horizon without any sound from the powertrain whatsoever. It also features Porsche's Active Suspension Management which is always working in the background with the super low center of gravity of the car due to its battery placed between the two axles, low down in the body. This helps the Taycan hit corners at great speeds and stand true to the brand’s reputation.

It offers a complete Porsche driving experience with the steering being quick and accurate that makes carrying speed into the corners and rushing out a piece of cake. The adaptive air suspension keeps the ride firm yet comfortable for city driving and with so much power available, it does not feel imposing to drive. It sure feels every bit like a Porsche is one of the best, if not the best driving EV in the world today.

With the corner-carving prowess, the 2022 Porsche Taycan costs a bit on the higher side when compared to its rivals. The Tesla Model S is the most powerful at this price point in the segment and yet is about $15k cheaper than the Porsche. The Audi E-Tron GT is based on the Taycan itself and it is just marginally slower in the straight line while costing a bit less. The Lucid Air is the most affordable sedan in this lineup and yet is also the quickest off the mark.

2022 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan Fuel Economy

9.0/10

The Porsche Taycan 4S does not have the highest MPGe figures of the segment and with the standard battery back, it manages to offer a driving range of just about 199 miles. With the Performance Battery Plus, the 2022 Taycan manages only 227 miles, which is below average for the segment.

That being said, Porsche’s claims for the recharge timings are pretty impressive, but for you to enjoy those, one needs to shell additional money. Porsche charges $1,680 for a 19.2 kW onboard charger and $460 for an onboard 150 kW/400V DC charger but also offers three-year access to 30 minutes of DC charging at over 500 Electrify America Stations across the country.

The DC charging is the quickest of all and can charge the battery to 80 percent in roughly 22 minutes while the basic home charger is astonishingly slow, needing 35 hours to charge. The 9.6 kW charger drops these timings to pretty usable 9 and half hours while the more powerful 11 kW charger brings it further down to around 8 hours.

The Audi E-Tron GT is marginally more efficient than its Porsche counterpart and hence also offers a slightly longer driving range. Lucid hasn’t released its MPGe figures but on paper offers a driving range on par with the Tesla. The Model S enjoys the decade-long head start as it is the most efficient of the lot and has a class-leading driving range. Tesla also has over 900 fast-charging stations across the country.

2022 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan Interior

6.0/10

The cabin of the Porsche Taycan is very modern and digital and hence doesn’t get any switches or knobs apart from the ones on the steering wheel. The two touchscreens on the dashboard control everything inside the car, while even the instrument cluster is now fully digital with even the traditional center stacked tachometer making way for modernity. If all these screens weren’t enough, one can also opt for an additional screen on the dashboard for the front passenger to enjoy their ride better.

The build quality is exactly what we expect of a Porsche, everything is tight and well aligned and feels solidly built. There’s piano black trim offered as standard along with Paldao wood trim, aluminum Rhombus, or brushed aluminum and Carbon fiber interior trim also being offered Porsche offers three color choices for the interior as standard but opting for the leather upholstery will set you back by $4,130 and combining two colors will cost a bit more.

Porsche also offers the Olea Club Leather option for $6,570 which can only be opted with the sportier seats that retail for between $1,510 and $1,930. Both the seats offer great support and needs and although aren't the coziest one on the market, offer decent levels of comfort. The space at the rear is tight and taller passengers will find the sloping roof a hindrance as well. That being said, with the 15.2 cu-ft of the rear trunk with a smaller front trunk space also available, storage should not be much of a concern.

Since the Taycan and the E-Tron GT are mostly badge-engineered versions of each other, the space inside their cabins is pretty similar. Both offer a pretty spacious seating at the front and a cramped rear seat, while the trunks are pretty useful to use. Lucid hasn’t released any data of their Lucid Air yet while Tesla is again the king in this segment as it is the most spacious for both the passengers and their cargo. Some of the interior features in the 2022 Porsche Taycan 4S are:

  • 8-Way Power Bucket Heated Front Seats
  • 60-40 Folding Bucket Fold Forward Seatback Rear Seat
  • Tilt/Telescoping Sport Leather Steering Wheel
  • 16.8-inch Curved Digital Instrument Cluster
  • Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning
  • Partial Leather Seat Trim and Leatherette Door Trim Insert
  • Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (PVTS)
  • HomeLink Garage Door Transmitter

How intuitive is the 2022 Porsche Taycan 4S Electric Sedan’s infotainment unit?

The screen laden cabin of the 2022 Porsche Taycan features three screens as standard which includes the 16.8-inch curved digital instrument cluster, a 10.9-inch infotainment system at the center of the dash on the top, below which is a secondary screen that can be used to control various other functions of the car. One can also opt for another 10.9-inch screen for $1,130 on the passenger side of the dashboard while the rear seat occupants can also ask for a 5.9-inch rear seat screen.

The instrument cluster not only displays the vital stats of the car but can also put forward the navigation and music streaming details just like Audi’s virtual cockpit system. Although using the other two screens is a bit tricky as the haptic feedback for the touch works erratically and one needs to take their eyes off the road more often. Android Auto has finally made its way along with Apple CarPlay and various other standard techs like the SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth, navigation, and HD Radio.

The standard 150-Watt audio system does the job well but audiophiles would be left desiring for more and will prefer opting for either the $1,200 Bose 114-speaker system or the $7,000 high-end 21-speaker Burmester surround sound system. For a car that starts at over $80,000 as its base price, the option packages like the $990 for the four-zone climate control and $1,120 for a wireless mobile charger might seem just outrageous for many, but that’s just how Porsche has been rolling for decades now. Some of the infotainment features in the 2022 Porsche Taycan 4S are:

  • 10.9-inch Porsche Communication Management (PCM)
  • 10-speaker 150W audio system
  • Porsche Connect w/Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • HD Radio and SiriusXM Satellite Radio w/3-month trial
  • A 3D navigation map and Navtraffic Real-Time Traffic Display
  • Bluetooth interface for telephone and music
  • Voice control w/natural speech interaction

2022 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan Exterior

8.0/10

The exterior design of the 2022 Taycan is both fresh as a daisy and yet as iconic as Porsche’s legendary 911 silhouette. The overall design reminds you of all the Porsche designs with the LED headlights that have Porsche’s signature DRLs, the low and wide stance, and the arrow light strip, neatly integrating the Porsche logo at the rear, are quintessential Porsche design cues. There are plenty of exterior options available as well that although makes the car look even sportier, hikes the prices up much higher.

Both the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT are very similar in terms of exterior dimensions, with the Audi being marginally longer and a bit heavier than the Porsche. There are exact dimensions of the Lucid Air announced yet while the Tesla Model S is of similar dimensions as the Germans and yet manages to keep the weight in check in spite of it lugging around a much larger battery pack. Some of the exterior features in the 2022 Porsche Taycan 4S are:

  • Automatic Projector Beam LED Low/High Beam, Daytime Running, Auto-Leveling, Directionally Adaptive Auto High-Beam Headlamps
  • Cornering Lights and LED Brakelights
  • Power Open And Close Trunk and Power Spoiler
  • Rain Detecting Variable Intermittent Wipers w/Heated Jets
  • Power Heated Auto Dimming Side Mirrors
  • Rocker Panel Extensions

2022 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan Safety

9.0/10

There is no doubt that Porsche offers a well, precision built and safe car and even though neither of the safety testing agencies have crash-tested the Porsche Taycan, one can rest assured of their high safety standards. There are quite a few safety and driver assistance features offered as standard along with the options like adaptive cruise control, night vision, a head-up display, lane-change assist, and a surround-view camera, all of which need to be opted for separately which further hikes the prices dramatically. Some of the safety features in the 2022 Porsche Taycan 4S are:

  • Porsche Stability Management (PSM) and Porsche Traction Management (PTM)
  • Front Collision Mitigation
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Warn and Brake Assist
  • ParkAssist Front And Rear Parking Sensors
  • Back-Up Camera

2022 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan Competition

6.0/10

2022 Porsche Taycan 4S Electric Sedan vs Audi E-Tron GT

The step-sibling rivalry is pretty fierce between these two as both share a lot of the hardware and yet offer very different traits. While both the Porsche and Audi are built for the enthusiasts, it is the Porsche that has sportier handling while the Audi is more comfortable in the city. Though both of them are priced very similar to one another, Audi offers a few more features as standard which needs to be opted for separately in the Taycan.

2022 Porsche Taycan 4S Electric Sedan vs Lucid Air Touring

Lucid has been creating quite a buzz around the town for over a year now and we still are yet to see their first production car on the streets. Lucid promises to be huge and ready to take on the heavy-weights of the segment, how it turns out is yet to be seen. The Porsche Taycan on the other hand is unabashedly out there with its limited range but superior driving dynamics and potential fast charging capabilities.

2022 Porsche Taycan 4S Electric Sedan vs Tesla Model S Long Range

Considered as the one to beat in the EV market, the Tesla Model S already has the infrastructure and technological lead over the Porsche with over a decade of experience in the field. Both of them enjoy their large fan bases and with Porsche being able to offer the better quality product overall, Tesla is surely set to see some stiff competition after enjoying the monopoly in the market for a very long time.

2022 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan Final Verdict

The new Porsche Taycan 4S picks up from where it left off last year and further refines the product to offer an experience that is never seen before in the EV world. It is quick, it is agile, it recharges pretty quick as well, and yet is luxurious as well. Though most of the premium features need shelling out more and more money which takes the final tally well into the Model S Plaid price range, if sheer driving pleasure and electric mobility are what you seek, look no further than the 2022 Taycan 4S.
