2022 Porsche Taycan Release Date

Porsche is expected to launch the 2022 Porsche Taycan in the Fall of 2021. 

2022 Porsche Taycan electric Engine and Performance

There is no engine in the 2022 Porsche Taycan as such. As standard, the Base trim comes with a 79.2-kWh battery pack paired to one motor on the rear axles, which creates 402 horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque. This battery pack can be upgraded to a 93.4-kWh unit that bumps up the power to 469 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque. 

The 4S equips a bigger 71-kWh motor and pairs it to another motor on the front axle, making it an AWD. The Turbo variants are equipped with the 93.4-kWh pack but bump up the power figures by quite a bit. Irrespective of the battery pack, the gearbox on the Taycan is a 1-speed direct drive. 

When driving along, the Taycan is super-responsive and once one lets the foot down the burst of torque is immediate. The Base isn’t hard to launch despite being an RWD and the Turbo S variants just one-up the launches and provide blistering times on the sheets. The 40 MPH to 70 MPH time is a mere 5 seconds to back up the quickness but it doesn’t feel astoundingly so. 

Talking of the driving dynamics, the Taycan is every bit a Porsche - it feels planted to the tarmac, the steering is sharp and provides a lot of feedback, and the ambient noises are taken care of well to ensure a serene cabin during long drives. The driver sits low and has a low dash aiding in the view from the windshield. The suspension feels firm but not uncomfortably so. It can be improved by opting for the air suspension but that wouldn’t be necessary.

The Taycan does have a power deficit when compared to the Tesla, and a torque deficit when compared to the Audi but still manages to accelerate at a very quick pace while maintaining decent quarter-mile timings. The 0-60 MPH is pretty fast considering the RWD nature of the car, while the driving dynamics on offer are unbeatable by the other two cars.

The Porsche Taycan is expected to carry over the same battery packs and motor setup from the 2021 model year and that being said, the base 79.2-kWh battery is good for an EPA-rated fuel economy equivalent of 76 MPGe in the city, 84 MPGe on the highway, for a combined of 79 MPGe. This battery pack will be able to give out an expected driving range of only 200 miles, which can be bumped up to 230 miles from the bigger battery.

The Tesla Model S takes the lead here, hands down. Its bigger battery capacity and clever optimizations give it more range and more power to take on the rivals, which seem to be giving up 100 miles earlier. That, along with Tesla’s Supercharger network helps greatly in reducing the range anxiety that people tend to have.

The Porsche Taycan’s interior is a lovely place to be in. The interior is well-built, comfortable, and the German craftsmanship is very evident the minute one sees how clean and minimal the dashboard looks. There are screens all around that give a very modern feel to the interior and the dashboard. The door panels are covered in premium materials and house leather and amazing stitchwork to go with the price segment. The dashboard carries over the leather and stitchwork which is integrated beautifully to make it a visual delight. 

The center console houses two screens - one for the infotainment and the other for controlling the climate settings. The whole console is wrapped in premium leather and also houses a couple of cupholders to take care of the morning Starbucks. The armrest houses a wireless charger inside and is covered in a Felt lining. 

The seats are premium and provide a lot of support to the occupant along with a range of adjustability on offer, making it on par with the segment it competes in. These seats are upholstered head to toe in soft leather that has amazing stitchwork to add to the visual delight of the dashboard. The Base trim comes equipped with power-adjustable seats that have heating, while the higher trims add more customizations and amenities.

The rear seats are similarly equipped in terms of amenities and are bucket-style as well to seat in the occupant’s tight while on a track. The seats provide a lot of support and cannot be optioned as a bench seat to fit in one extra person. In terms of comfort, the higher trims add heating and ventilation, while all the trims get rear AC vents and a small display in the center to control climate settings.

The Porsche’s interior dimensions aren’t available in the public domain as of now but seeing how comfortable people have been, space is enough to fit 6-feet tall people without any issues. How intuitive is the car’s infotainment unit?

The 2022 Porsche Taycan comes equipped with a 10.9-inch instrument panel that acts as the main infotainment screen on the car’s dashboard. This unit has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard while also offering other connectivity options via USB ports and AUX jacks in the cabin. Talking of the user interface, it is visually pleasing and has a very simple and easy-to-understand layout with impressive touch response and smooth graphics. This display can also double up as a navigation screen which continues the smooth user interface of the display. 

The second display in the center console is responsible for all the controls of the Taycan with respect to the climate settings and the various features of the seats, both front and rear. This screen also houses shortcuts for navigation, music, calls, and settings. It also has a mouse pad for people to use the handwriting recognition feature available in the navigation and the infotainment screen. The music duties are handled by a 10-speaker audio system as standard which can later be upgraded to a 14-speaker Bose surround-sound system, or a 21-speaker Burmester premium audio system. The Porsche Taycan is a stunning-looking car and the paint schemes on offer complement the rather futuristic looks on offer. The rear of the Taycan features an adaptive rear spoiler that rises as the car hits a certain speed. Along with that, the light bar that stretches in between the taillights adds another stylish flair to the overall design and the sleek geometry. 

To the side, the Taycan has a very Porsche-like silhouette with a tall windscreen and a sloping roof that also houses an extra row of seating. There are no exaggerated lines and rather, the sides are simple. The front door houses a vent that helps in the aerodynamics of the car and that’s about it. The accent trims around the window add to the poshness of the exterior without interfering with the sporty character of the car. 

In the front, the design is rather minimal with full-LED headlights and a simple frunk lid. There’s no engine and the batteries are mounted below the rear seats, making the front area capable of holding luggage. The vents in the front bumper are real and do their job well. The front lip is black in the Base trim, whereas the other trims get them body-colored.

The Porsche is the lightest of all, and also is the most compact, helping a lot in driving through tight city streets. This compactness also aids the Taycan in handling and decimating the corners better than any other EV in the market. The Tesla Model S is a better package and value for money as compared to the Taycan because of the price-point it retails on and also because of how packed it is. That, combined with the Supercharger network also takes care of the range anxiety of the people. But to give props to the Taycan, it is very much a driver’s car providing a very engaging drive, a well-suited suspension, and a very potent powertrain.

The Taycan is a more dynamic car than the e-tron in every way be it by way of features, performance, comfort, and styling. The Audi e-tron on the other hand has a bigger cabin and can seat one more person as standard, while also hauling more cargo. The Taycan’s highway MPGe is way better than the e-tron but gives more MPGe in the city and combined.

The Taycan is a perfect choice for one who is looking for the most driver-friendly friendly car around the tracks, stupendous acceleration, and a modern design inside-out, while also shaming some of the supercars in a drag race.
