Apart from the weird feeling rotary gear shifter and the fact that most of the features are reserved only for the top trim, there isn’t much to fault in the 2015 RAM 1500 Regular Cab and hence sees no changes as well. With an MSRP of $26,855 for the base trim with the short bed, the RAM 1500 is still one of the more affordable options in the segment against the likes of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ford F-150, and the GMC Sierra 1500.

The 2015 RAM 1500 is offered in 5 different trims with rear-wheel drive as standard and an optional choice for a 4-wheel drive. There is also an option to choose between a 6.4 feet or 8 feet long bed at the back apart from the optional packages. The base trim is very industrial with very few features on offer, and while the higher trims do add a few more features to the mix, most of the premium convenience features are reserved only for the top Sport trim, which gets really expensive as well due to the inclusion of the larger V8 engine.

Since most buyers opt for the Regular Cab for either fleet or only work-centric use, it is best to just opt for the Express trim with 4WD and the long bed as it not only offers more convenience but also keeps the prices in check, which is the most important aspect for many business owners. All in all, the Express trim for us is the best value for money option in the lineup.

Engine and Performance

The 2015 RAM 1500 is powered by a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine as standard, while the top-end Sport trim features a 5.7-liter V8 under the hood. Both the engines are mated to a slick 8-speed automatic transmission which powers the rear wheels as standard while 4WD is available as an option. The base engine produces 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque, while the larger V8 is rated for 395 hp and 410 lb-ft. 

The performance is pretty strong even with the base trim as the 0-60 mph dash takes just over 7 seconds, while the quarter-mile run would need under 16 seconds. The top speed though is pretty impressive at 130 mph. The base engine can only tow under 5,000 lbs as standard, but the V8 when properly equipped can tow up to 10,650 lbs. The payload capacity too is below par with the segment standards at just over 1,500 lbs.

The Ford F-150 costs only marginally more than the RAM 1500, and despite the lower engine output, the acceleration performance is on par with all the trucks. In fact, it has the best towing and payload capacities to offer in this comparison. Both the Chevy and GMC trucks too have a pretty solid payload and tugging prowess to boast of, which is considerably greater than the RAM 1500.

The midsize trucks with regular cabs are usually meant to be workhorses and not to be efficient, and hence frugality is not one of their bigger traits. That being said, the 20 mpg of combined city and highway driving fuel economy is pretty decent in its class for RAM 1500. Even the more powerful V8 is rated for 15/22/17 for city/highway/combined by the EPA, which too is on par with the segment. The large 26-gallon fuel tank delivers a pretty long 500-mile combined range on a single tank of gas.

There is hardly anything to differentiate between the fuel economies of all the American trucks in this segment, with the only difference being the lower city and higher highway rating for the RAM 1500. All four trucks also employ identical gas tank capacities, except for Ford, which employs a smaller tank that affects its driving range to a certain extent. 

Interior

RAM offers one of the most premium cabins in the segment, and that is right through its lineup. Even with the base trim of the Regular Cab, the materials and build quality is pretty good, with the cabin being practical for daily usage. Though there is no wood and premium leather treatment available for the Regular Cab, the design is appealing. The rotary gear shifter though has a learning curve to it, it opens up more space and increases practicality. 

The seats are soft and supportive, and while the base trim gets vinyl upholstery which can be washed off very easily, higher trims feature cloth upholstery. There is a decent amount of space for people of all sizes to fit in rather well, and the three-seat bench is offered as standard with the option to opt for the large center armrest available. Convenience features like keyless entry and ignition, power-adjustable pedals, and a pair of lockable compartments over the rear fenders in the bed all add functionality to the truck.

In comparison, the RAM 1500 has a more compact cabin and a smaller capacity bed. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the GMC Sierra 1500 have the most spacious cabs on offer, while the Ford F-150 has a marginally better bed cargo capacity. All the trucks offer more legroom and headroom than the RAM 1500, which will surely affect its desirability factor for probable buyers with larger body frames. Major interior features include:

How intuitive is the 2015 RAM 1500 Regular Cab’s infotainment unit?

The lower end trims of the 2015 RAM 1500 Regular Cab feature a much smaller 5-inch screen and the larger 8.4-inch display is only available with the Sport trim. The interface is very intuitive nonetheless for both the screens with large icons and virtual buttons, while the physical knobs and buttons make it convenient to use while on the move. Voice commands are pretty functional as well, but navigation needs to be added an optional extra costing even more money. Major infotainment features include:

The RAM 1500 has been in its current fourth-generation since 2009, and with six years of it being into production, the truck has started showing its age. Not that the truck looks old in any way, but the rivals having been updated, the smaller cabin footprint, and the older design reminds you that it isn’t the latest truck in the market. That being said, the tall stance and high ground clearance offer an imposing presence on the road and improves practicality off the tarmac.

The RAM 1500 might feel like a smaller truck considering the compact cabin, but in fact, is one of the larger trucks in the market. The Ford F-150 is marginally larger but offers identical ride height and weighs a lot less than the 2015 RAM 1500. The Silverado 1500 and the Sierra 1500 are a lot more compact in terms of dimensions but do well to open up class-leading cabin space. Major exterior highlights of the pickup are:

Though the RAM 1500 has been in production for a while now, it does fare well in the tests conducted by both the government and private testing agencies for the 2015 model year. The NHTSA has rated it with an overall 4-star rating, while it does decently in the tests conducted by the IIHS as well. That being said, the Regular Cab does miss out on a lot of the modern safety features and driver aids even with the top trim and offers only the mandated and basic safety functions. A highlight of which is listed below:

The RAM 1500 is one of the popular trucks that has been increasing its market share based on its premium and attractive cabin. The base engine might not be the greatest in terms of being a workhorse, the fact that there is a V8 engine on offer with the Regular Cab makes it stand out in the crowd. Therefore, no matter what you expect from your next truck, if a supple ride, strong engine, and premium cabin are what you desire, the 2015 RAM 1500 Regular Cab might just serve you well.

Capable and luxurious pickup truck

Pros - Quality cabin materials, comfortable ride, smooth shifting transmission along with strong towing and hauling capabilities.

Capable and efficient work truck

Pros - Efficient engine with ample interior space, comfortable ride, fuel efficient and good quality cabin materials.

Cons - Difficult to use rotary shift dial.

Comfortable and spacious pickup. My RAM 1500 functions excellently on the road and on the ranch. The V6 engines are combined with an eight-speed automatic gearbox that shifts quickly and delivers power when needed. Luxurious pickup with strong performance
