The RAM 1500 heavy-duty pickup truck is one of the most familiar faces in the pickup truck industry. The first generation RAM 1500 pickup truck was introduced in 1981 and was on sale till 1993 followed by four more generations. The fifth generation of the RAM 1500 was launched in 2019 and thus the 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab is one of the carryforward models. Even though the upcoming RAM 1500 Crew Cab isn't going to get major changes, it remains a capable workhorse as before.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The powerful V6 fitted underneath the hood can easily carry five passengers and over 2000 lbs of payload. The TRX trim receives a V8, that can do more than just heavy lifting. The 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab is a well-rounded vehicle for people looking to buy a solid and rugged truck that is going to serve as their workhorse for years to come. The 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab is going to face competition from Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, and GMC Sierra. Let’s see if the carryover model of the fifth generation of the 1500’s legacy can give the competition a run for their money or not.

2022 RAM 1500 Features

The RAM 1500 heavy-duty pickup truck will be available in six trims Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Rebel, Longhorn, and Limited. We don’t expect any major changes here except for a few feature reshuffling and addition to the trims. The base Tradesman trim is expected to start at $33,000 and would go up to $60,000 for the top-end Limited trim.

Apart from the optional package Big Horn and Limited trim have exclusive packages available in those trims only.

We Recommend

We recommend going for the mid-range Laramie trim that gets most of the standard features and adds a few more features like premium leather upholstery, heated steering wheel, and hill descent control. Apart from this, you can also add packages and options to make your truck suited to your needs.

As mentioned earlier, the 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab is a carryover model, because of which the price tag doesn't differ a lot from the previous year's model. The manufacturer offers the base variant for $33,000 and the higher trim levels can go up to $60,000 for the 1500 Crew Cab.

Release date?

RAM hasn't declared a confirmed date of arrival of the new 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab, but looking at the launch patterns, the manufacturer is expected to bring this car out in the early fall of 2021. However, looking at the current pandemic situation, the manufacturer may consider pushing the launch back a bit.

2022 RAM 1500 Engine and Performance

The 2022 RAM 1500 will see no change in the powertrain. The base variant of the 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab comes with a decent 3.6L naturally aspirated V6 engine that puts out 305 hp at 269 lb-ft of torque. The engine is powerful by all means and that does show in the decent acceleration ratings of the vehicle. The other engine options feature a 5.2L naturally aspirated V8 engine, which takes the engine output close to 395 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, which is more than what you can ask for to pick cargo up the road.

Apart from the great engine variants available, the 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab comes attached with a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission, which works wonders with the engine variants available. Even though this pickup truck isn't meant for quick acceleration, the 0-60mph acceleration rating of 7.5 seconds isn't too bad for a truck of this stature. GMC Sierra 1500 is the fastest doing 0-630 mph in 6.8 seconds followed by Chevy Silverado doing 0-60 mph in 7 seconds.

Speaking of the ride quality, the suspension is on the stiffer side, which is what gives you that feel of a composed drive even with a ton of cargo at your back. While the steering feedback is very precise but hauling such a big truck is a nightmare in city traffic especially due to big blind spots. Overall the 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab is a decent performer in the segment.

When compared to the competition, the 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab outshines the rivals in terms of performance figures. The Ford F-150 puts out 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque followed by Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 putting out a similar 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque.

2022 RAM 1500 Fuel Economy

One of the most horrendous things about owning a RAM is poor fuel economy. The six-cylinder and eight-cylinder engines aren't the most efficient in terms of fuel economy. With the heavy-duty powertrain, the fuel economy of the 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab suffers a lot. Speaking of numbers, the 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab offers an average MPG of 20 in the suburbs, 25 on the highway, and 22 combined. If you talk about range, the 26-gallon fuel tank and the combined MPG of 22 push the average range to more than 570 miles which is a lot if you’re planning long trips with the RAM 1500 Crew Cab.

As for the rivals, the Ford F-150 with a fuel economy figure of 20/25/22 mpg in city/highway/combined respectively is almost similar to what RAM 1500 offers. While the other two Chevy Silverado 1500 and the GMC Sierra 1500 offer the least fuel economy of 15/19/17 mpg and 16/21/17 mpg respectively. The Chevy Silverado 1500 has the biggest fuel tank of 28.3-gallon which does help it in giving a good range from a tankful of gas.

2022 RAM 1500 Interior

After the 2019 update of the RAM 1500, the vehicle doesn't require a lot of changes to fit the needs of the driver. The large and roomy cabin fits everyone comfortably and the plethora of features that it comes with are appreciable. Step inside the cabin and you would be surprised to see a luxurious interior with above-average quality materials used throughout the cabin. The materials used are premium and if you go up the trim ladder, you will find the abundant use of leather throughout the cabin.

The dash is covered in a soft-touch material and there are buttons everywhere. The design of the interior is also quite modern and the color schemes available flow perfectly with them. the seats are comfortable to sit on and come with enough adjustment settings, to find the perfect driving position. The ergonomics are paid attention to and the layout is fairly simple. The interiors of the Chevrolet Silverado are the largest in the segment, but the 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab isn't too far behind either.

The comfort and the functionality RAM offers are too hard to find in the base variant of the other brands in the segment. That said, the Ford F-150 is the most cramped pickup truck in terms of space while the Chevy and the GMC trucks are equally spacious as the RAM. As for the cargo capacity, the Chevy and the GMC have the highest 89.1 cubic feet of cargo space followed by the Ford F-150 with 62.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The RAM 1500 has the least 50.3 cubic feet of cargo space.

Coming to the infotainment, the base variant receives a 5-inch touchscreen which is responsive and crisp, but can be quite small for most people. However, if you upgrade to the higher trims you can get an optional 8.4-inch touchscreen display, which supports Android Auto and Apple Carplay. All of this makes the interior of the 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab a great place to be in. Highlights of the 2022 RAM 1500’s infotainment system include:

  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • Premium Harman & Kardon sound system available
  • 7-inch Driver Information Digital Cluster Display
  • UConnect 4 interface

2022 RAM 1500 Exterior

There isn't a lot to notice in the 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab. The body style is still a spitting image of the exteriors of the predecessors and the overall boxy design doesn't feel too appealing. This is why the 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab will not stand out in the crowd. However, speaking of build quality, the 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab is solidly built and ruggedly held. The truck is made to take on the most intense tasks and stay durable for a longer time.

Overall, if you’re in search of a modern-looking truck with cutting-edge style, the 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab isn't for you. While features like slimmer LED headlights, a new narrow grille, 18-inch steel wheels, etc. will be carried over from the 2021 RAM 1500.

However, maneuverability becomes a challenge with the larger dimensions. That said, the Ford F-150 has the highest ground clearance of 8.6-inches while the RAM 1500 gets the longest wheelbase of 114.5-inches. Followed by Ford F-150 with a 141.1-inch wheelbase and Chevy and GMC having a similar 139.6-inches of wheelbase. Highlights of the exterior features include:
