The RAM 1500 has set the bar very high in terms of ride comfort, cabin quality, and potent engine performance, and stout hauling and towing prowess and hence have been one of the most highly rated trucks in its latest generation. RAM also launched the Hellcat-powered 1500 TRX just last year that has changed the game altogether. The acceleration and off-road performance from this truck are legendary and although it feels dominating and imposing to others on the road, it isn’t so from behind the wheel. Add to that the premium quality cabin that it inherits from the regular 1500 and we have a truck that ticks all the boxes that can ever be ticked.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

Since it was launched just the previous year, the 2022 RAM 1500 TRX does not get any major changes this year apart from the addition of a few new optional features that are introduced this year to make the overall package even more appealing. Although there are direct rivals to the TRX until the blue oval takes things into their own hands, the Ford F-150 Raptor and Toyota Tundra TRD Pro are the only two trucks that venture remotely into this high-performance truck arena. Priced at an MSRP of $73,465, the RAM 1500 TRX is the most expensive half-ton truck that one can buy today but might be worth every penny for some.

2022 RAM 1500 TRX Crew Cab Features

As standard, the 2022 1500 TRX gets quite a few creature comforts but is limited in terms of technology. There aren’t any driver aids on offer and even the infotainment features have to be opt separately. For example, the ParkSense parking assist costs an additional $445, the Advanced Safety Group package is for $995, while the Technology Group package adds $1,095 to the bill.

The TRX Level 1 and Level 2 Equipment Group packages will set you back by $3,420 and $7,920 respectively but add a host of features like remote start, a 115-volt power outlet, front and rear parking sensors, power-adjustable pedals, passive hands-free entry, and many more. The multi-function tailgate and spray-in bed liner are also charged additional which hikes the prices exponentially for this truck.

We Recommend

Although there are no trims to choose from, there is a long and exhaustive list of options that one can choose from. We recommend getting the safety package along with the TRX Level 2 Equipment Group package which although might considerably increase the final costs but will add plenty of convenience features and value to your truck.

2022 RAM 1500 TRX Crew Cab Release Date

There have been official statements from RAM officials yet regarding the release date of the 2022 1500 TRX but since the regular RAM 1500 is expected to hit the market in the third quarter of 2021, expect the TRX to be followed soon after that.

2022 RAM 1500 TRX Crew Cab Engine and Performance

Hiding under the muscular and scooped under the hood and wide flared out fenders, there is a Hellcat sourced 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V8 engine that produces a thumping 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. The power is sent to all four wheels as standard through an eight-speed automatic transmission that effortlessly changes clogs and is always in the right gear to propel you through.

The performance is no doubt impressive, to say the least. To begin with, RAM claims a 0-60 mph sprint in 4.5 seconds and quarter-mile run 12.9 seconds but independent testings have suggested much quicker timings of a blisteringly quick 3.7 seconds and 12.3 seconds respectively in the same regard. Being a truck, the top speeds are limited to just 118 mph, while the high-performance nature limits the payload and towing capacity at around 1,400 lbs and 8,000 lbs, both of which are much lower than the regular RAM 1500.

Along with the exciting V8 exhaust notes and steadfast acceleration times, the TRX also excels in the off-roading department as well. Along with the reinforced steel frame and 13-inch travel from its suspension, there are massive 35-inch-inch all-terrain tires on offer that can wade through up to 32-inch of water as per the claims from RAM. Large 15-inch front brakes, Bilstein remote-reservoir dampers, and an electronic-locking rear differential all aid in tackling mud, gravel, and rocks effectively.

There is no doubt over the fact that the RAM 1500 TRX is too over the top and radical both in terms of its powertrain and pricing figures and neither of its competitors comes even close to it. The Ford F-150 Raptor is its closest rival that is over $15k cheaper, has much lower engine output, and is much slower off the mark. The Tundra TRD Pro on the other hand is a few thousand dollars cheaper than the Ford and is the slowest of the lot but offers superior hauling tugging prowess.

2022 RAM 1500 TRX Crew Cab Fuel Economy

The massive growling supercharged Hemi V8 under the hood of a half-ton pickup truck that is tuned for utmost performance and power can never really be rated highly for its fuel efficiency. And that is exactly what is the case with the 2022 TRX, as the EPA has rated it for a very low 10 mpg in the city and 14 mpg on the highways. Thanks to a massive 33-gallon fuel tank, the driving range is pretty decent at over 350 miles in most scenarios.

Although the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro has a much lower engine output and rather sedate performance when compared to the TRX, it isn’t substantially more frugal than the RAM truck. It employs the largest gas tank that one could expect which comes to aid its driving range. The F-150 Raptor on the other hand is much more efficient and gets the standard 36-gallon fuel tank capacity which results in class-leading fuel efficiency figures.

2022 RAM 1500 TRX Crew Cab Interior

RAM had upped their game with their new age cabins since their overhaul back in 2019 and the 2022 RAM 1500 TRX reaps all the benefits from that update. The premium material quality, impeccable sound insulation and the sophisticated build quality is what has earned it the huge reputation in the industry. Opting for the optional TR1 and TR2 packages make the cabin look and feel significantly more premium with leather covered surfaces and suede and carbon-fiber accents.

There is no lack of space with the crew cab being standard for the TRX and there is no doubt the rear seat of the RAM 1500 is the best one could ask for in a pickup truck. There is ample legroom on offer and while the front seats aren’t as spacious as some of its rivals, there are optional heating and cooling functions on offer along with a head-up display. TRX also features paddle shifters behind the steering wheel while there is also a floor shifter located on the center console.

Cargo Capacity (cu-ft)

In terms of cargo space at the back, all the trucks offer somewhat similar room with there being hardly any difference in this regard. The Ford F-150 is the most spacious one at the front and does not compromise much at the rear as well. The Toyota Tundra is the most compact one in this comparison but it ain’t cramped in any which way. The Ford truck also offers best headroom for both the front and rear seat occupants.

  • 8-Way Power Driver Seat with 4-Way Power Driver Lumbar Adjust
  • 60-40 Folding Split-Bench Fold-Up Cushion Rear Seat

How intuitive is the 2022 RAM 1500 TRX Crew Cab’s infotainment unit?

The RAM 1500 TRX also features the same vertically mounted old-Tesla style 12-inch infotainment system with the UConnect 5 interface. The interface can open multiple applications and tasks at the same time, increasing its productivity. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility is standard and so is navigation and mobile hotspot. The standard Alpine audio system is great as well but one can also opt for the mighty 900-watt 19-speaker Harman-Kardon audio system for an additional premium of $1,195.

  • 12.0-inch touchscreen UConnect 5 infotainment system
  • 10-speaker 506W Alpine audio system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio with 6 months prepaid service
  • Built-in navigation
  • Connected Travel & Traffic Services Real-Time Traffic Display
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi Mobile Hotspot Internet Access

2022 RAM 1500 TRX Crew Cab Exterior

RAM had teased the TRX for a long while before actually launching it last year and once it did, it stood strong on all the expectations of the masses. Besides the meaty engine, the TRX also gets a radical exterior design with the inflated bodywork, a bed-mounted spare-tire carrier, body-colored beadlock-capable wheels and massive 35-inch tires that are mounted on huge 18-inch wheels. It also comes with a host of underbody plating to protect the vitals and shows its true nature of use.

Both the RAM and Ford trucks are pretty much similar in length with the RAM 1500 being slightly wider, but it is also considerably heavier due to the massive Hemi engine under its hood. The Toyota Tundra on the other hand is considerably more compact than the other two and yet weighs very similar to the Ford. The F-150 Raptor has the lowest ground clearance in this segment at 9.8-inch while the RAM TRX might someday be able to go over a compact hatchback effortlessly.

2022 RAM 1500 TRX Crew Cab Safety

The high price tag and very low sales volume mean that the RAM 1500 TRX will probably never go under the hammer for its safety testing but its sibling, the regular RAM 1500 has been scored highly by both the government-run NHTSA and the private IIHS organizations. Although the TRX misses out on many of the driver aids as standard, there should be no concern for its safety. Also, all of the features are available as options. A highlight of the standard safety features list has been listed below.

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) And Roll Stability Control (RSC)
  • Forward Collision Warning-Plus
  • Dual Stage Driver And Passenger Front & Seat-Mounted Side Airbags
  • Curtain 1st And 2nd Row Airbags
  • Airbag Occupancy Sensor
  • Tire Specific Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • ParkView Back-Up Camera

2022 RAM 1500 TRX Crew Cab Competition

2022 RAM 1500 TRX Crew Cab vs Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew

Once the leader of the high-performance truck segment, the Ford F-150 Raptor has been successfully dethroned by this massively capable and blisteringly quick RAM 1500 TRX. Although it is considerably pricier than the Ford, the TRX is far quicker off the mark and yet is more comfortable and spacious than most in the segment. But if the 702 hp and monster truck-like stance are too radical for you, the Raptor might be the perfect middle-ground for many.

2022 RAM 1500 TRX Crew Cab vs Toyota Tundra TRD Pro CrewMax

There is no chance that the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro could ever stand a chance against the likes of the TRX and Raptors. Although it is very quick and very potent in hauling and lugging goods and also has tremendous off-road credentials, the TRX just obliterates the competition like nothing else. The price might be too high for some of the TRX, but it is worth every penny over the TRD Pro.

2022 RAM 1500 TRX Crew Cab Final Verdict

The introduction of the RAM 1500 TRX has changed the perception one would have of a stock pickup truck. It is mind-numbingly quick in straight lines, excels in the mud, sand rocks, and yet can work perfectly fine as a regular pickup truck for hauling and towing loads. Until Ford comes up with a spruced-up version of their Raptor range, the 2022 RAM 1500 TRX will enjoy complete monopoly in the market.
