The heavy-duty pick-up truck segment has always been on a rage owing to its ‘do-it-all’ category vehicles. The RAM 2500 is a formidable name in the heavy-duty pick-up truck segment. The 2021 RAM 2500 remains unchanged as compared to the previous year’s model. The RAM 2500 is one step above the smaller RAM 1500 and offers better-towing capability, better performance, and better payload capacity from its bigger V-8 base engine.

We believe that the Big Horn trim makes more sense as it gets some aesthetic changes like exterior chrome trim and better interior features like cloth upholstery, illuminated beverage holders, illuminated vanity mirrors, cargo box light, etc. make it a better deal. Also, you get access to many optional features like LED reflector headlights, glove box lamp, 18-inch polished aluminum wheels, tinted acoustic windshield glass, heated front seats, 8-way power-adjustable seats and the list goes on.

2021 RAM 2500 Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The RAM 2500 Regular Cab is equipped with a legendary 6.4L V-8 HEMI engine producing about 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard. It comes in RWD configuration as standard and can be had in AWD configuration too by paying about $2900 extra. Both the trims are equipped with the same drivetrain.

2021 RAM 2500 Regular Cab side view

The RAM 2500 is also available with an optional 6.7L V-8 Cummins diesel engine for super heavy-duty tasks that require higher towing capability and higher torque figures. The standard gas engine can tow a mighty 15,040 pounds while the torque monster diesel engine can tow about 37,100 pounds.

Looking at the performance figures, all the trucks offer similar power output figures and very close acceleration times. The RAM 2500 offers the maximum firepower and does a 0-60 mph sprint in about 7.2 seconds and a quarter-mile drag is completed in 15.9 seconds. The acceleration times are quite commendable for a truck of this size. The Ford F-250 is equipped with the smallest engine of the lot and yet offers very good performance as that of the rivals. The GM twins are based on the same platform and perform the same in almost every parameter.

How well does the 2021 RAM 2500 Regular Cab handle?

The RAM 2500 is a heavy-duty pick-up truck and is not made for corner-carving abilities. However, in comparison to its younger sibling RAM 1500, it does lack in the handling department. The steering feels artificial and does not have a feel to it. But it manages a shorter turning radius which is very necessary for a truck of this size.

2021 RAM 2500 Regular Cab ride and handling

The ride comfort is good and the availability of an air suspension in the rear makes the deal even sweeter. The air suspension can help it take heavy loads with ease. It can lower the truck to connect a trailer and then self-level the truck when it starts moving. The RAM 2500 has a towing capacity of 15040 pounds and it's the best in its class.

2021 RAM 2500 Regular Cab Braking Performance

All trucks require a very effective braking system owing to their gigantic size and higher momentum. The RAM 2500 Regular Cab is equipped with 14.2-inch rotors in the front and 14.1-inch rotors in the rear. The braking performance is commendable, considering a curb weight of 5988 pounds and the brake feel is progressive with adequate bite force. The brakes work simultaneously with the ABS system to bring the RAM 2500 to a complete halt from 60 mph under 122 feet of stopping distance.

The other trucks in the competition are heavier than the RAM 2500 Regular Cab. The Ford F-250 is equipped with larger rotors at both ends and comes to a complete halt from 60 mph within 140 feet. The Ford F-250 is not very heavy as the GM twins yet it fails to offer good braking performance. The GM twins are the heaviest and equipped with different-sized rotors but offer very similar braking performance.

2021 RAM 2500 Fuel Economy

7.1/10

All the trucks are fuel-guzzling monsters and they can’t be expected to offer decent fuel efficiency. They are equipped with V-8 engines and offer higher output figures, owing to which they deliver lower fuel economy. The RAM 2500 Regular Cab offers about 12 mpg in the city, 18 mpg on the highway, and 15 mpg in combined driving conditions. With a fuel tank capacity of 32 gallons, it can travel up to 384 miles in the city, 576 miles on the highway, and 480 miles in mixed conditions.

The F-250 offers slightly better fuel efficiency than the competition and is equipped with a 34-gallon fuel tank. It offers a class-leading range of 527 miles, on a full tank of gas in mixed conditions. The GM twins are not much behind and despite a lower fuel efficiency of just 14 mpg in combined driving conditions, they offer about 504 miles of range on a full tank of gas.

2021 RAM 2500 Interior

7.0/10

The interiors of the RAM 2500 are well laid out and ergonomically designed. The dashboard is modern and feels good to touch too. The vertical a/c vents with a multimedia touch screen in the center look very car-like. However, if you need a premium touch and better upholstery, you need to opt for the Big Horn trim only. It gets you seats with premium cloth upholstery and they are comfortable as well. They offer good support and are bolstered well too.

2021 RAM 2500 Regular Cab front seats

Both the trims can seat up to three passengers with the headroom and legroom being decent as per regular cab standards. You can opt for the Heated Seats and Wheel Group package for features like heated seats and heated steering wheel wrapped in leather as well. The Tradesman trim is focussed mainly on the commercial segment and misses out on some available creature comforts.

9.0/10

The 2021 RAM 2500 model is distinctively RAM from any angle you look at it. The front fascia imbibes a huge, bold grille along with RAM lettering and a quad halogen headlight setup looks badass. The RAM 2500 gets a higher ground clearance than its rivals and it adds to better off-road capability. It also sits on a shorter wheelbase as compared to the rivals, leading to lesser legroom than the rivals. However, the turning radius is less for a truck of its size. The GM twins sit on a slightly longer wheelbase and are bulkier as well, leading to their lower fuel efficiency figures. The F-250 gets a lower ground clearance of just 10.2-inches which is the least in the segment. Some of the standout exterior features of the RAM 2500 are:

  • Chrome headlamp bezel
  • Quad halogen headlamps
  • Power locking liftgate
  • Automatic headlights
  • Power Black Trailer-Tow Mirrors
  • Black grille with chrome surround

2021 RAM 2500 Final Verdict

8.8/10

The RAM 2500 is an extremely capable and well-built truck from the house of FCA. It offers class-leading towing capability and performance as compared to its competition. The list of standard safety features is also good enough, to provide you with peace of mind. In addition to it, you get many optional packages to muscle it up as you desire and make it more like a lifestyle product rather than a truck. The fuel efficiency is good as per truck standards and the price at which it is offered makes it a bargain.
