8.0/10

The 2022 RAM 2500 Mega Cab is expected to be available in four trims, namely the Bighorn, Laramie, Limited Longhorn, and Limited. We Recommend

We would recommend the Limited Longhorn trim as it provides most of the features of the top trim. It is also high on creature comforts like heated and ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control system, etc and for a better musical experience, there are 9-Alpine speakers with subwoofer as well. Some exterior features like power-folding mirrors, automatic headlamps, LED bed lighting, front LED fog lamps, rain-sensitive windshield wipers, etc make it a desirable trim.

2022 RAM 2500 Mega Cab Diesel Release Date

While RAM has not clearly specified a timeline for the launch of the 2022 RAM 2500 Mega Cab model, it is expected to launch by the end of 2021 and we believe that it will be worth the wait.

2022 RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab Engine and Performance

6.0/10

Like the 2021 model, the 2022 RAM 2500 Mega Cab diesel will be equipped with a 6.7L Cummins inline-6 engine, producing 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque. The current model is equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Some rivals offer better 8-speed or 10-speed automatic transmission. If the rumors are to be believed then the 2022 RAM 2500 model will be equipped with a 10-speed Allison automatic transmission and will ditch the older 6-speed transmission. The Allison transmissions are always a better choice for heavy-duty hauling. They are known for their unmatched reliability and seamless shifting abilities. All the Mega Cab models come with an AWD configuration.

For regular driving and basic hauling, gas engines are preferable and for heavy-duty tasks which require higher torque and pulling power, diesel engines are a better choice. The 6.7L Cummins engine is not a performance champion but offers ginormous torque for your hauling needs. It can tow up to 19,680 pounds and the payload capacity is about 3,160 pounds. The RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab The diesel engine being heavier than its gas counterparts, the diesel variant of the RAM 2500 Mega Cab surely suffers from reduced maneuverability around the town. The higher curb weight also means that it's not a cornering machine and must be handled with care around the corners.

* Expected and 2021 data used for reference

The GM twins are the most powerful trucks in the comparison, just behind the Ford F-250 Super Duty XL and their performance does testify to this fact. The acceleration offered by both of them is quite similar and beat their competitors by almost a second. The Ford F-250 is equipped with a monstrous engine in terms of torque it generates. It generates about 1050 lb-ft of torque at just about 1800 rpm which is insane. Although these trucks are made for heavy-duty tasks and hence much performance should not be expected from them. The top speed for all the trucks is below 100 mph considering its high aerodynamic drag and curb weight.

2022 RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab Fuel Economy

7.0/10

All the trucks are equipped with enormous diesel engines and they all produce enormous torque. Obviously, they are fuel guzzlers as well. As reported by some users, the 2021 RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab delivers about 12 mpg in the city, 16 mpg on the highways, and 14 mpg in combined driving conditions. With a fuel tank capacity of 31 mpg, it can travel up to 372 miles in the city, 496 miles on the highway, and 434 miles in mixed driving conditions. Thus it can be assumed that the 2022 RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab will offer similar fuel efficiency.

* As reported by users and 2021 data

The Ford F-250 is the most fuel-efficient truck in the comparison. It is also equipped with a large 34-gallon fuel tank, giving it a range of 533 miles in combined conditions. The GM twins are the least fuel-efficient but offer the second-best range owing to a bigger 36-gallon fuel tank. Both of them can travel about 468 miles in mixed driving conditions. The RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab loses out in the range battle owing to a smaller sized fuel tank of 31-gallons and lower efficiency as well.

2022 RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab Interior

6.0/10

The 2022 RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab is expected to receive some interior upgrades as well. Already the interiors of the current model are modern and come with many features that were previously unheard of in the truck segment. The 2022 model is also expected to get a well-laid-out dashboard, with all the controls designed in an ergonomic fashion. Most of the interior will feel very car-like and provide good comfort for the passengers. A larger infotainment touch screen is expected on the center stack as well. Also, being a Mega Cab it will be spacious inside for the passengers.

The front seats will be comfortable and come in a 40/20/40 split seat configuration, meaning you can fit three passengers in the front row. The rear seat will come with a 60/40 split and foldable configuration. It will also be equipped with many convenient features like a dual-zone climate control system, power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, rear heated seats, automatic rearview dimming mirror, etc in the upper trims while the lower base trim will be more focussed towards commercial use.

All the trucks can accommodate up to six passengers with front 40/20/40 seat configuration and rear bench seat. We are comparing similar cargo bed sizes for a fair comparison. The GM twins compete well with the competition with their larger 69.50 cu-ft of cargo capacity. The RAM 2500 Mega Cab will offer about 72.2 cu-ft of cargo capacity from its 6’4” of bed size. The Ford F-250 SuperDuty will offer the least cargo capacity of 65.4 cu-ft. All the trucks provide a good amount of legroom while the RAM 2500 Mega Cab offers better interior cargo space as well. Some of the standout interior features are:

  • Auto Dimming rearview mirror (Limited Longhorn and Limited)
  • Heated steering wheel (Limited Longhorn and Limited)
  • Heated and ventilated front seats (Limited)
  • Heated rear seats (Limited)
  • Dual-zone climate control system (Laramie, Limited Longhorn and Limited)

9.0/10

The 2022 RAM 2500 model is expected to receive a facelift and the already good-looking RAM 2500 Mega Cab will look even better. 2022 RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab Competition

7.0/10

2022 RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab vs 2022 Ford F-250 Superduty diesel CrewCab

The 2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty diesel truck will be more powerful than the RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab. Even in the current avatar, it offers better performance and torque than the 2021 model. It is also slightly more fuel-efficient in combined driving conditions than the RAM 2500 Mega Cab. With the expected updates, the 2022 model will surely have an upper hand, at least in terms of styling and interior design.

2022 RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab vs 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel CrewCab

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD diesel CrewCab comes very close to the RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab in terms of interior features offered. However, with the latest updates, the RAM 2500 might just have an upper hand over the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. The Silverado 2500 is slightly less fuel-efficient than the RAM but offers better performance and higher torque as well. It also provides a better range than the RAM 2500 owing to a better fuel tank capacity. The Silverado 2500HD also offers better ground clearance than the RAM 2500HD Mega Cab

2022 RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab vs 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD diesel CrewCab

The GMC Sierra 2500HD and Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD are based on the same platform and offer very similar features as well. However, their exterior and interior design varies slightly. So, as per the specification, there won’t be any different when it comes to performance and efficiency. So all the points mentioned about the Silverado 2500HD will hold true for the GMC Sierra 2500HD as well. But with the updates to the 2022 model, we believe that the RAM 2500 might just have a lead.

2022 RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab Final Verdict

The RAM 2500 Mega Cab Diesel has been known for its better interior space than the competing double cabs or crew cabs. It also comes with an AWD configuration as standard. It also offers the reliable Cummins diesel engine, known for its mile-munching ability and lesser maintenance. With the expected update, the RAM 2500 diesel Mega Cab might just be the best option in its category. It also offers a long list of safety features, although some of them are optional and will cost you extra. We are waiting for the 2022 model and advise you to do the same before taking a buying decision in this category.
