Heavy-duty diesel trucks are the final word for capability and reliability. Unlike regular full-size trucks, they find comparatively fewer takers and cater to a niche category of buyers that look forward to the robust real-world usability in them. The RAM 3500 Crew Cab Dieselhas been one of the trucks in this category that can suffice all these prerequisites without compromising on comfort. For 2022, RAM will bring the 3500 range of trucks souped-up the truck with standard U-Connect 5 systems starting from the Bighorn trim, an updated driver assistance tech package, and also a slight tweak on the styling front.

The 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel will be available across all four standard trims with the base prices starting from $57,180. All trucks come in the rear-wheel-drive format as standard with the AWD option offered at around $3,000 extra from the base. Also, the diesel engine does carry a hefty price tag from the gasoline counterparts and does push the pricing to buy $9,400 in its low output format and by over 12,000 in the high output variant.

One of the standout features expected for The 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel is the updated infotainment system with the U-Connect 5 interface which promises to be faster than the old system with a cleaner and intuitive interface. This feature is now expected to come standard from the base Bighorn trim, which will be a big upgrade in terms of equipment. Talking about equipment, there is no shortage of it. Which trim should you buy?

Based on the features on offer, the Laramie trim would make the most sense for the price. Not only does it bring in a whole lot more equipment as standard but it also is offered at a justifiable price bump from its preceding trim. Also, note that the high output engine trim and the AWD configuration would add almost 6 grand and we would highly suggest against it if the terrain and conditions of the truck’s usage don’t necessitate it.

2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel Release date

There has been no official statement on the release but going by the previous year's trends, it should happen sometime at the beginning of the final quarter of this year. Order reception would follow close and deliveries should commence within a month of order.

2022 RAM 3500 diesel Crew Cab Engine and Performance

The 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel would be mechanically identical to the model it is replacing. This means you get a 6.7L inline-6 Cummins diesel engine pushing out close to 370 hp and a serious 850 lb-ft of torque. If you are willing to spend exactly $3,150 more, you get the same engine but this time with 420 horses and a whopping 1075 lb-ft of torques, which is undoubtedly the highest in the segment. A 6-speed transmission is a solo option with the diesel engines and it does stick out like a sore thumb on an otherwise potent powertrain.

When it comes to real-world performance, the 7,200-pound curb weight does tie it down a bit and the crude transmission does not help either. Even though it has all the thrust on tap from the engine, the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel hits 60 only in 8.3 seconds in its low output guise while the high output version does sub 8 second runs if you give it some good surface. The quarter-mile times come up in 16.4 seconds and could hit over 100 miles per hour quite effortlessly if you keep pushing it.

The 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel, being the one with limited power and torque to play around with, comes in as the slowest of the bunch. The low curb weight should have given it an advantage but the shoddy and dated 6-speed transmission isn’t working in its favor here. Meanwhile, the F-350 takes advantage of the low weight and high output, managing to post the quick run in 7.5 seconds. The Silverado 3500 HD and the Sierra 3500 HD, sharing identical power trains, manage to put down the decent run not too far from the Ford, despite not being the heaviest ones here.

How well does the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel handle?

The 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel is not the easiest to drive trucks out there given the sheer weight and dimensions. The light steering is the only positive attribute we could think about in it and even that won’t save you in traffic. The ride feels stable and sorted on the highways but you better keep the speeds below 60 as the flat front end does take on a lot of wind. It might be a champion off the roads, but on them, where most of you will end up using this, it does feel a bit handful.

Maneuvering this 239-inch long truck through traffic is far from convenient and the high hood line does inversely affect the forward visibility. The surround-view camera is a must-have addition on this truck or else you would have a tough time parking or back up in this behemoth. The old six-speeder does feel a bit janky on low speeds, so crawling in bumper-to-bumper traffic does require some carefully calibrated footwork.

2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel Braking Performance

The2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel will come with a decent set of stoppers similar to the outgoing model with disc brakes all around. The front rotors measure in at 14.2-inches while the rear ones come in at 14.1-inches. The low curb weight does give it an advantage and on emergency braking from 60 mph, it manages to stop in about 141 feet, which is pretty impressive for its class. The brakes themselves are not the bitiest, but they cut speed impressively. The truck does come equipped with traction control and stability systems in case something goes out of your hand, especially in wet conditions.

The low curb weight has helped the2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel to put out the best braking performance here. At 141 feet, it stops 4 feet shorter than the second-best here, the F-350 which offers the biggest hardware. The GMC and the Chevy sport identical hardware and weigh almost the same. The smallest brake size and the heavy chassis are working against them in the braking department, losing out to completion by coming to a complete halt in just 147 feet.

2022 RAM 3500 diesel Crew Cab Fuel Economy

9.0/10

Big bore engines don’t come out as efficient and the 6.7 liters of it on the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel is no different. Rated at around 17mpg combined, there is pretty much nothing to write home about when it comes to the efficiency figures of the truck. The maximum rated efficiency figure of the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel is 17 mpg and that too when driven sanely at a constant pace on highways. The 28-gallon diesel tank does help in making anything better and you are looking at a real-world range of just about 420 miles in mixed driving cycles. On a full tank of gas, the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel will take you just 476 miles a stretch before needing a refill.

The2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel turns out to be not as efficient as the competition, especially on highways, despite being in a much-relaxed state of tune. The tiny gas tank also limits its range falling just under 480 miles on the highways. In the same conditions, the General motor twins can achieve close to 650 miles while the Ford pushes even further with an outstanding highway range of 680 miles. The surprising fact is that, despite being the one with the biggest engine and output, the Ford F-350 manages to come out as the most efficient of the three.

2022 RAM 3500 diesel Crew Cab Interior

6.0/10

If there is one place the2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel excels, then it would be the interior. If you spec it right, the cabin experience would be something that could rival luxury family SUVs of a similar price range. The fit and finish levels on the inside are second to none and the quality of materials used is up there with the best. The 12-inch vertically aligned infotainment is the main focus here and it works beautifully as well. There is also a lot of polish/brushed metal and natural wood inserts, which does contribute to raising the sensation of quality inside.

The seats are huge on both rows and get a maximum occupant capacity of 6. There are around 67 inches of shoulder room and 40 inches of legroom on both rows, plenty to accommodate anyone of any size. The front seats come powered and get heating function with the upholstery done in genuine leather. Heated steering, multi-zone climate control, premium audio system, wireless charging all come in standard as you go up the trim-line with features scattered variably across trims. Mind you, the screen size mentioned is of higher trim and there is considerable downsizing as you go down the trim line.

Even though the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel comes with the best interior of the bunch, it is far from being spacious in the segment. If you look at the overall space, the GM twins still take away the competition, offering the best overall cabin space and cargo bed area. The Ford comes close second with an almost identical cabin room and a 65 cu-ft loading bed. The 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel meanwhile, loses in the practicality as well, sporting the smallest cargo bed which measures in at just 58 cu-ft. Some interior features* expected on the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel are;

  • 12-inch infotainment system
  • 7-inch TFT driver information center
  • 10-way power-adjustable front seats with heating function
  • Heated, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel
  • Genuine Leather Upholstery
  • Polished metal and natural wood inserts

  • Heated rear seats

What’s there to keep you entertained?

A 12-inch infotainment system with an updated UConnect 3 feature is the talking point for the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel. The updated system should incorporate a smoother interface with much more intuitive animations and functions. The system will offer native support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay while SiriusXM offered a trial subscription. Higher trim will also come with navigation, voice command support, 4G Wifi hotspot capability, and a 9-speaker Premium Audio system. Some infotainment features expected on the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel are;

  • 12-inch(8.4” standard) infotainment system
  • Android Auto/Apple CarPlay functionality
  • SiriusXM trial subscription
  • 9-Speaker Premium Audio system
  • Integrated voice command with Bluetooth
  • 4G Wi-Fi capability

2022 RAM 3500 diesel Crew Cab Exterior

6.0/10

The huge size and proportions do give the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel undeniable road presence but we are not so sure on how the design has come out to be. The big nose with the RAM logo does make it easily recognizable but the surrounding chrome bits do feel a bit overdone. The 18” wheel does look a bit undersized for the monstrous proportions and the jacked-up stance does not help make it look any better. We are not thrashing the overall design here, but based on what they did with the cabin, we expect much higher.

Just like the cabin, there is no shortage of features and equipment on the exterior as well. For starters the 18-inch wheels we just talked about are standard. Additional amenities like LED Bi-function projector headlamps, LED tail lamps, LED fog lights, automatic wiper, power heated mirrors with courtesy lights, chrome bumpers, tinted Acoustic glass, LED dome lamps, power deployable running board are all part of the package as you up the trim line. RAM also offers a variety of exterior customization options and you could easily personalize the truck if the standard bling is not for you.

The Ford F-350 is the largest truck here when it comes to lateral dimension and this has helped it find the perfect middle ground when it comes to practicality and comfort. The Silverado 3500HD and the Sierra 3500HD come close in this regard with only the extra heft working against them. The 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel, is the smallest of the bunch, limiting it in the amount of cabin and cargo space it has to offer. The lower curb weight is an advantage but then again, the power and efficiencies are lower than the competition too. Some infotainment features expected on the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel are;

  • 18-inch wheels
  • LED Bi-function headlamps lamps (o)
  • LED tail lamps (o)
  • Automatic headlamps
  • Heated power-folding mirrors with courtesy lights

  • Spray-in bed liner by Mopar
  • Damped tailgate
  • Remote tailgate release

2022 RAM 3500 diesel Crew Cab Safety

8.0/10

The 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel has not undergone any kind of crash testing as of now, but the RAM lineup has shown to be pretty capable in this regard in the past year. Its lesser sibling, the RAM 1500, which it shares the platform with did score a 4-star rating from the NHTSA and was named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS, both in 2021. RAM also has left no corners cut when it comes to the safety of the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel and has fitted it with most of the passive and advanced driver assistance tech available. Some advanced safety features expected on the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel are;

  • Blind Spot detection
  • Cross path detection
  • Electronic roll Mitigation
  • ParkSense front and rear park assist
  • Parkview backup camera
  • 360 Surround camera (o)
  • Hill-start assist
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Trailer brake controller
  • Trailer sway damping

2022 RAM 3500 diesel Crew Cab Competition

6.0/10

2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel vs 2022 GMC Sierra 3500 HD Crew cab Diesel

The GMC Sierra 3500 HD starts at a higher price tag than the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel but for that money you would be getting better power, better economy, a whole lot more cabin space, and cargo bed area. Even though the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel has a 500 odd pounds weight advantage, it does not translate to any real-world performance advantage other than braking performance. So based purely on what you get for your money, the GMC comes out to be the better choice.

2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel vs 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD

The Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD is the affordable buy here. It offers better power, better range and better cargo area as well. The 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel, on the other hand, gets a better cabin, comfortable ride, and better off-road capabilities thanks to the lower curb weight and the higher ground clearance. The Chevy might be an advantage when it comes to figures but we have to give it to the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel for being the better overall package here.

2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel vs 2021 Ford F-350 Super Crew Diesel

The Ford F-350 offers better value for money offering a powerful engine, spacious cabin, and rather sizable cargo bed. The F-350 also turns out to be the more economical one despite making considerably more power. The weight advantage of the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel, does help it stop better though. The better-appointed cabin of the 2022 RAM 3500 Crew Cab just can’t justify its deficit of other specifications even after commanding a higher base price than the Ford, which is a straight no.

2022 RAM 3500 diesel Crew Cab Final Verdict

If ride comfort is one of the primary necessities, the new RAM 3500 Crew Cab Diesel easily falls in as the best option. But when getting a heavy-duty truck, chances are that the main requirement will be different and when it comes to pure capability, the RAM does fall back a little. Also the undersized regular cargo bay, small fuel tank, and low fuel economy. All this and a comparatively high starting price, surely begs the question of whether to get one in the first place.
