Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Sadly, it doesn’t have a dedicated version for off-roading. On the exterior styling front, it still has the classic RAM looks with modern elements to amplify the design of the truck. The only difference between the Mega Cab and Crew cab is, the Mega Cab comes with a tad more spacious cabin for better comfort and ergonomics. Moreover, it has a long-lasting rivalry in its class. Some of the commendable competitors are the Ford F-350 Super Duty Super Cab, Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Extended Cab, and GMC Sierra 3500 HD Double Cab.

Features

The 2021 RAM 3500 Mega Cab is offered with 5 different trim levels namely Lone star, Big Horn, Laramie, Longhorn, and Limited. Each trim level is distinguished from one another by the features it offers. The base engine on offer is a 6.4-liter V8 engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The base trim is priced at $48,425 and goes all the way up to $68,895 for the top-of-the-line Limited trim. We Recommend:

The Trim that makes the most sense here is the mid-trim Laramie which is priced at $56,595 which seems not very expensive when compared to the base version. The Laramie is the trim where everything gets premium and more convenient. As standard, it offers features like LED headlights and taillights, Leather seats, Dual-zone automatic climate control, heated steering wheel, 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Nine-speaker premium sound system, leather seats, and so on. Hence we recommend the Laramie trim which seems to be the most value for money trim here.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The 2021 RAM 3500 Mega Cab is available in three engine options. As standard, it is equipped with a 6.4 L V8 engine that generates 410 hp @ 5600 rpm and 429 ft-lbs of torque @ 4000 rpm which is paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This duo sends power to either rear wheels or all four wheels. The other two engines are optional and powered by diesel.

The second engine on offer is a 6.7 liter Cummins turbocharged diesel inline-6 engine which puts out 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque and gets mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The third engine is the same 6.7 Liter Cummins turbocharged diesel engine with a higher power output of 420 hp and an immense 1075 lb-ft of torque. With the 6.4 L V8 gasoline engine, it can do 0-60 in just 7.9 seconds which is quite impressive for a full-size pickup truck. Also, it completes a quarter-mile run in 16.1 seconds. On the downside, we don’t have the official top speed figure.

Here the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Double Cab beats its competition in the 0-60 mph run with a time of 7.2 seconds and the quarter-mile race is dominated by the Ford F-350 Super Duty which takes 15.5 seconds to complete a quarter-mile. The RAM 3500 with the base engine, on the other hand, is the slowest because of its heavy size which affects its performance as well.

How well does the 2021 RAM 3500 Mega Cab handle?

We cannot expect much from a full-size pickup truck when it comes to handling. The massive size and heftiness of the 2021 RAM 3500 Mega Cab is a downgrade that affects its handling while driving around the corners. In the front, it gets a Three-link suspension with a track bar, coil springs, stabilizer bar, and a solid axle. When it comes to the rear suspension, it is equipped with a Two-stage longitudinal leaf suspension with optional supplemental airbags and a solid axle.

Although it is not great at handling, this suspension offers a comfortable ride quality. To make up for the poor handling, RAM throws in some modern features to keep the car in control at any speed. To start with, Electronic Stability Control is included as standard and so is a Roll Stability Control. Both these safety features work actively to ensure that the truck undergoes minimal body roll and to prevent it from toppling at high-speed corners.

2021 RAM 3500 Mega Cab Braking Performance:

Talking about the brakes, the RAM 3500 Mega Cab gets a huge 14.17 inches rotor in the front and 14.09 inches rotor in the rear. With a curb weight of a whopping 7063 lbs, it is more likely to offer mediocre braking performance comparatively. However, the rotors used are highly durable which are tested thoroughly, and are quite reliable too. Like every other truck in its class, the RAM also doesn’t have official braking performance figures.

Comparing the competition, the Ford F-350 Super Duty comes with the largest brakes which measure 14.29 inches on either side. On the flip side, the GMC Sierra 3500 HD comes with the smallest brakes which measure 13.9 inches and 14.7 inches, and also weighs 7259 lbs which happen to be the heaviest vehicle in its class. Hence, the GMC will definitely lose out to its competition in terms of braking. The Ford will more likely win the braking test.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

As there are three engines on offer, the RAM will offer three different fuel efficiency figures. However, these heavy-duty pickup trucks are not usually rated by the EPA. Hence, we don’t have the official fuel figures for the RAM 3500 Mega Cab. The only intel we have is its fuel tank capacity which measures 31 gallons. Sadly, it is the least voluminous tank which might further affect its driving range.

Among the competition, all these trucks have not been rated by EPA as they fall under heavy-duty pickup trucks. With the stats we have, both Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD and GMC Sierra 3500 HD are much akin when it comes to fuel capacity. Both these trucks sport a 36-gallon fuel tank which turns out to be the largest in the competition. The Ford, on the other hand, offers a decent-sized fuel tank of 34 gallons.

Interior
8.0/10

The Ram 3500 has gone totally innovative with the interior. The cabin offers oodles of luxury and comfort. It doesn’t look like the interior of a pick-up truck at all. Pick-up trucks of the previous generation were pretty much bland. However, the new cabin greets you with a first-class interior and has become more modern. The fit and finish levels are truly impressive. The Mega Cab also gets a relatively spacious cabin than the Crew Cab.

The base version offers cloth seat trim but when you move up the trim levels, it comes with leather bolstered seats and leather trims all over the cabin. However, the Longhorn trim offers special trims with a special Longhorn logo on the seats and the dashboard. The center screen looks large and crisp. Moving on to the interior dimensions, it has a roomy cabin with headroom of 40.9 inches and 40.3 inches in the front and rear respectively. On the whole, it is such a spacious and highly ergonomic interior.

In comparison, The Ford F-350 Super Duty kills the competition when it comes to the shoulder room space. All these trucks get an interior with modern elements. However, both Ford and RAM come with more attention to detail. All the cars offer considerably good interior dimensions and proportions. Some of the standout and optional interior features include:

  • Real wood interior trim
  • Wireless smartphone charger
  • Front bucket seats
  • Heated rear seats
  • Power-adjustable, heated front seats
  • Leather seats
  • Ventilated front seats

How intuitive is the 2021 RAM 3500 Mega Cab’s infotainment system?

Every modern truck gets a smart infotainment system and the RAM is no exception. The base trim gets a tiny 5-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The mid-Laramie trim gets an 8.4-inch adaptive touch screen. As for the Limited trim, it gets an even bigger 12-inch touch screen display with spot-on graphics. The infotainment system is very user-friendly and buttons are very easy to find. From the Laramie trim, you have access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Wireless smartphone charger is another commendable feature worth considering. Some other standouts and available infotainment features include:

  • Satellite radio
  • Nine-speaker premium sound system
  • Navigation system
  • Connected services including 4G LTE Wi-Fi
  • 17-speaker premium Harman Kardon sound system
  • HD Radio
  • Voice Activation
Exterior
7.0/10

After a facelift in 2019, it gets the same exterior styling which looks fresh. It looks more like a mini monster truck than a pickup truck. At your first glance, you would find it so big and brawny with a mean look at the front fascia. The body looks wide and beefy with a robust structure. The front headlights are inspired by the signature RAM headlights integrated with LED headlamps and Daytime running lights as well.

On the side, it flaunts smooth and clean lines. However, things get spruced up when it comes to the rear end. It gets a wide rear body with simple yet beautiful LED taillights and what blows your mind is that it has dual rear wheels as an option in the rear which means, it is technically a mini truck. Altogether, it looks like a RAM 1500 on steroids. Coming to the exterior dimensions, be in no doubt, it is one among the widest and bulkiest trucks in its class. It hangs 7.3 inches above the ground and sports a wheelbase of 160.5 inches.

Comparing all the trucks in the competition, the wheelbase of the 2021 Ford F-350 Super Duty Super Cab is the largest amongst all whereas the ground clearance is the highest in the Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Double Cab which measures 11.2 inches. This is very important for off-roading as it can tackle any kind of rugged terrain. Lets some of the exterior features of the RAM 3500 in the list given below:

  • Chrome exterior trim
  • 18-inch aluminum wheels
  • Power-folding chrome tow mirrors
  • Upscale design details
  • 20-inch wheels
  • Dual rear wheels
  • Night Edition package with blacked-out exterior trim
Safety
8.0/10

As far as safety goes, it has not been rated by both renowned organizations. However, both RAM 1500 and RAM 2500 get appreciable ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS. Hence, we expect the RAM 3500 to come with a more rigid chassis and body. That’s pretty much it. Speaking of the features, the RAM has some best-in-class active and passive features onboard. Some of the standard and optional safety features are as follows:

  • Backup camera
  • Tire fill alert system
  • Trailer brake controller
  • Parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Surround-view camera system

2021 RAM 3500 Mega Cab Vs 2021 Ford F-350 Super Duty Super Cab

The RAM 3500 Mega Cab is better than the Ford in every aspect except for the fuel tank capacity and curbs weight. Apart from that, the RAM excels in every area. It offers better performance, a better interior, and an exterior as well. Also, the Dodge offers a way better fit and finish levels than the Ford. In a nutshell, the RAM is an ace pickup truck with much more practicality and potential than the Ford.

2021 RAM 3500 Mega Cab Vs 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Double Cab:

The Chevrolet Silverado definitely gives a tough fight to the RAM 3500 in terms of performance. However, the RAM 3500 serves as a better work truck, especially with the Diesel engine. Furthermore, the RAM 3500 offers a better-looking and upscale interior with bucket loads of legroom in the rear. Exterior-wise, the Chevrolet is not as appealing as the RAM 3500. Overall, both these pickup trucks are so close in terms of every aspect and it is a matter of taste when it comes to choosing between both these trucks.

2021 RAM 3500 Mega Cab Vs 2021 GMC Sierra 3500 HD Double Cab:

Like you know, the GMC Sierra shares the underpinnings of the Chevrolet Silverado but is slightly more expensive. In terms of performance, the GMC Sierra is a tad quicker than the Silverado. Also, the GMC offers a bigger fuel tank. Although the RAM 3500 misses out on power output, it is expected to offer better fuel figures than the GMC. Moreover, the quality of the Chevrolet’s interior is nowhere close to the RAM 3500. The RAM is also more affordable and seems to be a better choice here.

Final Verdict

Being one of the much-revered pick-up trucks in this class. The RAM has done a fantastic job over years and still continues to do so. The new RAM 3500 is unarguably a potent truck in the competition and makes a statement for itself with its practicality and off-roading capabilities. Although the weight of this truck may be a letdown. But given the fact it has a strong engine and opulent interior, the RAM 3500 Mega Cab is hard to skip in this segment.
