Full-size cargo vans have been the primary source of freight for both small-scale and large-scale businesses for some time now. The RAM Promaster 2500 is a name that is synonymous with this category and has been one of the most favored picks since its launch back in 2014. For 2021, the RAM Promaster 2500 will be a carryover from the previous model year incorporating a few additional safety features such as a standard crosswind assist system while features like Blind-spot, cross path detection, and full-speed forward-collision warning systems come via options list.

Overall Rating

The new RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo Van will only be available in a single trim with three body styles to choose from. The standard-wheelbase low roof variant kicks off the line at $35,285 while the long wheelbase and high-roof long-wheelbase models come at a slight premium. A 3.6L V6 is the sole engine option and this comes paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The main competition for the 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo van will be the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 Cargo Van, the Nissan NV2500 Cargo Van, and the Ford Transit T-250 Cargo Van.

2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Features

The 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo van will be available in a single trim with three body configurations on the table. The lineup starts from the standard 136-inch short wheelbase variant, which comes with a sticker price starting at $35,285. The high roof of this variant will cost around $36,410 while the 159-inch long-wheelbase variant will cost around $38,085. No matter which variant you go for, a 3.6L gasoline V6 coupled to a 6-speed automatic will be the only drivetrain made available. Also, every model will come in as a rear-wheel-drive-only configuration.

For a cargo van, the 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo van does offer a decent list of equipment. A 5-inch color infotainment system with a 4-speaker audio system is part of the standard package including steering mounted controls. Both front seats get a manual adjustment and the standard air conditioning unit also comes with manual controls. RAM has given a priority to safety with this update and as to that a crosswind assist system now comes in as a standard addition. Features like blind-spot monitoring, cross-path detection, and full-speed collision warning system are also available as additional packages.

Which trim should you buy?

The base 13.6-inch wheelbase variant should be more than enough for people looking for a compact cargo van to use inside the city. It offers almost 304 cu-ft of cargo space and comes with tech similar to the costlier variants. Also, the payload and towing capacity decrease as the body size increases. If you are satisfied with the amount of space on offer with the entry-level model, we don’t see a reason to move to the higher trim.

2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo van comes sporting a 3.6L V6 engine pushing out nearly 280 horses and 260lb-ft of torque. This along with its relatively quick 6-speed automatic transmission, the 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo van is rated for a 0-60 timing of around 8.1 seconds, which is pretty quick for a nearly 4650-pound cargo van. It also does a standing quarter in just 16.5 seconds, if someone decides to do so.

The standard van is rated for a maximum payload of around 4,260 pounds and a maximum tailoring limit of around 5,100 pounds. RAM says that this truck does manage to trailer around 6,800 pounds when properly equipped with options. As for a bigger body style, the payload and trailing limit also decrease, factoring in the additional weight of the bodywork.

When it comes to standard specs, there is no beating the ford transit T-250. Its spritely engine and quick 10-speed auto help it gain an advantage when it comes to outright speed but do fall when it comes to payload, factoring in its higher curb weight. The turbocharged engine on the Sprinter helps haul around the highest payload given the class-best torque output which kicks from far lower RPMs than the competition. The Nissan meanwhile falls to the back of the pack in this regard owing to the limitations of the crude 5-speed automatic system despite boasting the biggest engine here.

How well does the 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo Van handle?

The 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo vanis a decent machine to ponder around the stress unless to factor out the rear visibility issues. You almost feel like being behind the wheel of an average family car thanks to the accommodating bucket seats and light steering wheel. The overall chassis is well balanced and the ride is flat unless you have loaded to the point where the COG of the van shifts. The standard backup camera is a nice addition and without it negotiating this van in a tight space would have been a nightmare especially when you don’t have power exterior mirrors.

The heavy-duty suspension, though a bit harsh, does control body roll to quite an extent when the van is partially loaded. Also, the highway cruisablity is pretty decent and we didn’t find the need for the newly added crosswind assist systems to kick in, at least in the low room standard box variant. An all-wheel drive should have been a choice as the wheels tend to lose traction through the not-so-good stuff when trying to haul in a considerable payload.

2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo Van Braking performance

The2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo van does come with disc brakes at all four corners. The front gets a pair of 11.8-inch rotors while the rear gets a size down to 11-inches. The brakes are not the biggest we have come across but they do their job. This van weighs a minimum of 4644 pounds and if we could assume, would stop around 140 feet on full emergency brakes from 60 mph. You do get the basic set of traction and assist systems as a standard and the overall hardware falls in decent at best.

The Nissan NV2500, being the heftiest of the bunch, gets the biggest hardware here. That said, it weighs almost 1000 pounds more than the competition and will take the most distance to stop. The Ford transit gets decently sized rotors but its relatively higher curb weight does affect the braking performance. There is no information about the Sprinters brake sizes, but from what we know from its previous iteration, it should perform well given the lower curb weight.

2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Fuel Economy

8.0/10

The 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo van does offer decent economy for its size and the 3.6L V6 is rated for around 15 mpg of combined gas mileage. Even though we don’t have any official EPA-rated figures for the city and highways, the best figure you could expect from this van based on customer feedback is around 18mpg. The 24-gallon tank is decently big and with a rated economy of 15 mpg combined, one could expect a reasonable 360 miles on a single tank of gas on normal usage. The payload does drastically affect the economic figures and the lower the weight, the higher the figures.

The Mercedes Benz Sprinter does have its small 2.0L engine as an advantage here when it comes to economy figures, returning a class-leading figure of 22 mpg combined. The rest of the pack as on sporting bigger engines does fall back in this regard with the Ford coming in second with a combined efficiency figure of 16 mpg while the RAM gets pushed to third place with its 15mpg figure. The Nissan NV2500, with its big 4.0L engine and near 6,000-pound curb weight, returns the worst, managing close to 12 mpg in mixed driving conditions.

2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Interior

7.0/10

The insides of the2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo van come with a rather spacious cabin. With a pair of 4-way manually adjusting seats offering around 75-inches of shoulder room, the chances of feeling cramped in this van are almost nil. The seats are set quite high and the forward visibility is excellent. Everything is laid out ergonomic and all the controls feel robust and easy to operate.

The equipment list is also rather interesting. You get a 5-inch U Connect 3 infotainment system with 4-speaker audio system. This system incorporates voice commands, Bluetooth hands-free, and even the backup camera, which comes in really handy. Steering mounted audio controls are also a part of the standard package. The single-zone manual air-conditioning unit offered does perform really well and helps keep the cabin cool on the warmest of days. The 304 cu-ft cargo bay is pretty large for a short wheelbase variant and it’s almost up to any kind of job.

All four vans have a standard seating capacity for 2, while the Dodge offers a 3 seater double bucket set configuration as well. It also offers the widest cabin here while offering decent amounts of head and leg rooms. The Mercedes Sprinter cargo van offers the biggest cargo bay measuring a whopping 319 cu-ft in its standard configuration. Even though the Ford offers a slightly bigger cabin than the Sprinter, its 246.7 cu-ft cargo hold is smaller. The Nissan meanwhile, does have the least volume despite having the longest wheelbase and weight considerably high. Some standout interior features of the 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo van are;

  • 5-inch infotainment system
  • Single-zone manual air conditioning
  • 4-way manual front seats
  • Multifunction steering wheel
  • Day/night inside rearview mirror
  • Instrument panel 12-volt power outlet

2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Exterior

6.0/10

The 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 is not one of the most pretty-looking large cargo vans out there. The front-end design choice is rather both and is very distinctive looking from the rest of the product lineup from the brand. The high-set black bumpers and the curve headlamps are just not working for us. Most of the exterior features come in as options and this coupled with the unavailability of body-colored bumpers makes it look too underwhelming from the outside.

As standard, you get 16-inch steel wheels but there is an option to go for star design aluminum wheels of the same size. The exterior mirrors are manually operated and power/heated ones will cost you about $254. Thankfully a keyless entry system is a part of the standard kit. There are a few other exterior customization options available and each addition will add to the base price of the van.

 The Nissan NV2500 is the longest and heaviest van in this comparison. This does not give it any perceivable advantage over its completion but surely does affect its performance inversely. The Sprinter, the second-biggest vehicle here, is one of the lightest and has the biggest cargo area as well. The Transit and the Ram Promaster do come even in size but the slight advantage in wheelbase and height gives the RAM the higher cargo capacity. Some standout exterior features of the 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo van are;

  • 16-inch steel wheels
  • Halogen headlamps
  • Front and rear clearance lamps
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Tinted windshield glass
  • Heated power-adjustable mirrors (o)
  • 260-degree opening hinged rear doors

2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Safety

6.0/10

The2021 RAM Promaster 2500 has not undergone any sort of crash testing by the NHTSA or the IIHS as it is included in the commercial large vehicles category. That said, RAM has given priority to safety with this update and the 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 now gets crosswind to assist as standard. Features like rear park assist, blind-spot warning, cross path alert, and full speed collision warning are all available as options. Some standout safety features of the 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 are;

  • Traction control systems
  • Crosswind assist
  • Trailer sway damping
  • ParkSense park assist system (o)
  • Blindspot and cross path detection (o)
  • Full-speed collision alert (o)
  • Rollover mitigation system

2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo Van vs 2021 Mercedes Benz Sprinter Cargo Van2500

The price of the 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 cargo van starts at almost $5,000 cheaper than the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter cargo van. Even then it gets a considerably more powerful engine enabling it to be the quicker van of the two. The RAM also offers a slightly roomier cabin as well. That said, the Mercedes, sporting a turbocharged engine, manages a better payload than the RAM thanks to the higher torque output and also offers a significantly bigger cargo bay in comparison. The Ram also does look a bit too basic in front of the Mercedes. Picking one totally boils down to the kind of money you are willing to spend and the requirements, leaving the final decision as a matter of personal choice.

2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo Van vs 2021 Nissan NV2500 Cargo Van

Even though the Nissan NV2500 has a bigger engine and a bigger frame, it is less powerful and accommodating than the 2021 RAM Promaster 2500. The near 6,000-pound curb weight surely does affect its performance and limits its payload/tailoring capacity when compared to the RAM Promaster 2500. The Nissan is also a gas guzzler and its crude 5-speed auto is such a dismal unit. All this and commanding a premium of around $3,000 over the 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 cargo van, the NV2500 gets a definite no from us.

2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo Van vs 2021 Ford Transit T-250 Cargo Van

Both vans come at similar base prices and sport V6 gasoline engines are rated at similar outputs. Even though the Ford weighs in a bit more and is a bit low on power, the quick 10-speed auto makes it quicker and slightly more economical than the 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 cargo van. Ford also offers a more powerful engine as an option, something which the RAM doesn’t. That said, the 2021 RAM Promaster 2500 offers better cargo space and also has higher rated payload/trailering capacities. Both vans offer their own set of pros and cons, so selecting one solely depends on what your requirements are.

2021 RAM Promaster 2500 Final Verdict

The new RAM Promaster 2500 Cargo Van comes out as decently priced and one of the most capacious vans in its segment. The engine offers best-in-class power output with decent efficiency figures. This power advantage has given it a respectable 4260-pound payload capacity and a class-leading trailing limit of 6800 pounds. The lightweight chassis makes it a breeze to handle and also helps in reducing braking distance. The cabin is one of the roomiest in its category and gets a nice list of standard equipment as well. Except for the average economy figures, there is pretty much nothing to complain about the 2021 RAM Promaster 2500, making it a favorable van in this segment.
